  • Based on a similar lack, or minimal amount, of data I’d dispute this. Lots of people are moving to/back to Glasgow now that WFH is much more readily available. I’m trying to buy somewhere atm and every estate agent has commented on the number of people moving into the area from elsewhere. by potatoes_aint_shit (Mon 6th Sep 2021 1:11pm)
  • Suspect so! I’d missed your international comment & think that’s pretty fair - all the people i know who have been moving back (myself included) have been from other cities in the U.K. rather than more rural/suburban parts of Scotland. That said, doubt many are moving to the Trongate! by potatoes_aint_shit (Mon 6th Sep 2021 1:23pm)
  • Welcome to Glasgow, you’re clearly new here. It is a demonstration likely causing hundreds of thousands to police & tidy up after which does nothing but promote hate between neighbours. by potatoes_aint_shit (Sat 18th Sep 2021 11:34am)
  • I’ve found this has got increasingly bad on Buchanan street recently, particularly with folk delivering for Just Eat / Deliveroo etc pelting down the street. I get that they’re under time pressure, but surely hitting someone holds them up even more?! by potatoes_aint_shit (Thu 14th Oct 2021 2:17pm)
  • I’ve been getting post during the week but I was due to get an item last Saturday & when I checked the tracking on the Royal Mail website it advised that there had been a request not to deliver on that day. I presume it’s related to COP but doesn’t really make sense, since the conference isn’t on at the weekends as far as I’m aware… by potatoes_aint_shit (Fri 5th Nov 2021 3:23pm)
  • If you can drive to Aberdeen, then I’d suggest leaving the car there & getting the Friday night ferry to Shetland. Cabins in off-season are reasonable if you’re happy just to share with randoms & you wake up in Shetland on Saturday morning! Hire a car for a couple of days (was £90 when I did it last time in 2018, which is cheaper than taking it on the boat). Jump back on the ferry on Sunday evening & wake up in Aberdeen come Monday morning. Alternatively, can drive Glasgow-Thurso to get the ferry to Orkney and it’s less than an hour but I think Shetland feels more like an adventure! by potatoes_aint_shit (Sun 7th Nov 2021 5:06pm)

  • If you drink milk, you should be aware that veal is a by-product. Eating it is a lot less wasteful tbh. by potatoes_aint_shit (Thu 18th Nov 2021 4:35pm)
  • Lived in Aberdeen for 7 years & moved back (home) to Glasgow over the summer. I think part of the reason it gets a bad rep is you have to make an effort with Aberdeen, whereas Glasgow is much easier to live in. Down here the people are (generally) a bit friendlier, there is more to do & it’s not as bloody cold. I first moved up when oil was booming & it had a sort of ‘look at me, money money’ persona which has died down as oil prices dipped & (a lot of young engineering) people moved away. That hit Aberdeen hard, but I’d actually say it was overall a good thing because the art scene has really flourished over the last few years with things like the Nuart murals, the Spectra festival of light & other programmes. It’s never going to compete with Glasgow city centre - partially due to size (it’s about a third of the population) and also distance from a lot of people (who travel in from Aberdeenshire) but it has a lot of nice restaurants now. Where it holds its own is the proximity to coast & countryside - I really miss that now I’m back in ‘town’. TLDR: Aberdeen is what you make of it, you just need to dig a bit deeper. by potatoes_aint_shit (Tue 7th Dec 2021 1:49pm)
  • You’re the wrong side of the country for the ocean in Aberdeen 😉 it’s the North Sea. I do agree it’s lovely though - if you’ve got a car you’ll be able to do plenty of coast adventures; Rattray Head, Hackley Bay, even Stonehaven is nice. by potatoes_aint_shit (Tue 7th Dec 2021 3:11pm)
  • Give the troll some credit, at least they managed to spell ‘ugly’ correctly this time. They tried posting before & didn’t quite manage 😂 by potatoes_aint_shit (Tue 14th Dec 2021 7:53pm)
  • I prefer gousto - find the recipes a bit more interesting & they have options for 10 min meals which are handier after a day of work. My discount code is: cook.gousto.co.uk/raf/?promo_code=LYNSE42046895 if you want to give it a punt, you get 65 % off your first box & 30 % off all other boxes in your first month. I obviously also get a kickback too for referring (just in the interests of transparency!). To make it ‘cheaper’ I’ve found that ordering a box for 4 rather than 2 gives you more food per head for lower cost so I tend to order it that way, and portions are generally decent. Edit: customer service is also really good - any missing or damaged items get fairly generously comp’d for future orders. by potatoes_aint_shit (Sun 2nd Jan 2022 8:02pm)
  • I’ve used it sporadically for about a year - probably once a month once the starter offers died off! I’m pretty sure the ‘menu’ for the week is launched on a Tuesday, so that might help with the sold out part? by potatoes_aint_shit (Sun 2nd Jan 2022 8:16pm)
  • Can only sympathise - hope you’re all ok & not too rattled. I had a very similar experience & when I shouted the cyclist down, he came over & squared up to me (a 5’3 heavily pregnant woman…) so I’ve just given up because it’s not worth putting yourself in an unsafe position despite being in the right! by potatoes_aint_shit (Sun 16th Jan 2022 10:09am)
  • If you’re thinking about West End & all have cars then I’d seriously check out the parking permit situation for any property - I live in Hillhead & we’re only allowed one permit per property (according to my husband, ymmv!) & finding a residents space can be really challenging at the best of times. If you had multiple cars for hospital commutes it could be a nuisance. by potatoes_aint_shit (Fri 21st Jan 2022 8:10am)
  • Realise it’s not city centre, but… Brawsome Bagels had cinnamon buns on their Instagram today that looked amazing! by potatoes_aint_shit (Fri 4th Feb 2022 4:14pm)
  • Strong Like a Mutha on Portland Street is really good - you don’t have to be a mum to go, but it’s small group PT and open gym. They do pre/post-natal specialist classes & it’s a very welcoming space. by potatoes_aint_shit (Thu 3rd Mar 2022 4:01pm)
  • Please don’t feel like you need to justify yourself - you asked a specific question & I’m not sure why people feel the need to undermine it. I hope you find a good workout space that works for you. by potatoes_aint_shit (Thu 3rd Mar 2022 8:41pm)
  • https://www.landlordregistrationscotland.gov.uk - can check by property postcode or landlord registration number. by potatoes_aint_shit (Sun 20th Mar 2022 9:26am)
  • My thoughts exactly! Mods, could we consider a pinned post on the sub giving people advice on how to gauge an area e.g. links to Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation, how to search for previous questions, the general use of google… etc. I’m sure I’m not alone in being frustrated at the number of posts like this, although I acknowledge that subs like these are good resources for people moving to areas they are unfamiliar with. by potatoes_aint_shit (Tue 22nd Mar 2022 11:00am)
  • Having just been through this at the weekend, the only ‘recycling’ centre in Glasgow that is accepting garden waste is Shieldhall & you may well be told to put it in with general waste. Really frustrating that the centres websites aren’t updated, particularly when the council is constantly wanging on about ‘can you recycle more…?’. by potatoes_aint_shit (Mon 28th Mar 2022 3:08pm)
  • Dawsholm sent me to Sheildhall on Saturday, so just passing on what I was told! Since the fire there last year they are recycling very little, but ymmv depending on which attendant you speak to. by potatoes_aint_shit (Mon 28th Mar 2022 4:08pm)
  • Yeah, it’s very frustrating! Good on you for emailing & trying your best though - feels like a bit of a losing battle sometimes. I’ve just tried to stop buying tetrapak because it’s a pain to recycle but entirely depends what you need to buy groceries wise, so won’t be possible for all. by potatoes_aint_shit (Mon 28th Mar 2022 8:24pm)
  • Used Bradleys removals in November & couldn’t fault them - they made very quick work of loading up the van & we’re happy to wait until we had the keys, despite a bit of a delay. Compared the price with a few other movers and they were much more reasonable for the amount of stuff needing moved/distance too. by potatoes_aint_shit (Tue 5th Apr 2022 11:09am)
  • Totally agree - love bramble but it’s really tight with a baby bump let alone a pram! by potatoes_aint_shit (Sat 9th Apr 2022 12:55pm)
  • Agree with this - the green councillor is the only one for my ward who responded when contacted about 6 weeks of no bin collections. Standard glasgow complaint, but the SNP & labour councillors totally pied it. by potatoes_aint_shit (Mon 2nd May 2022 8:18pm)
  • That’s poor advice - yeah, for some people that will be absolutely fine but for a lot of people starting to run is where they discover their biomechanics aren’t ideal for it, they under/over protonate or just need more support. Additionally, ‘turn up’ - to where? The park? The street? No one is judging a newbie runner for having decent kit. That kind of comment just puts people off the idea & is really unhelpful. by potatoes_aint_shit (Mon 7th Nov 2022 1:42pm)

  • Doppio Malta (George Square) has loads of space for a pram & is half empty during the week if you’re self conscious about crying. Baby changing is down the stairs though which is a nuisance. The Ivy has a specific baby changing room & there were quite a few prams in when I was in with mine, I’ll admit I was surprised as I always thought it was ‘posh’ but the staff couldn’t have been nicer with my little one. It was a bit of a squash to get in but once seated we were grand. Wagamamas tend to punt you up the back, but that gives you plenty of room to manoeuvre a pram, especially when your little one isn’t in a high chair. John Lewis is always a good shout for a quick stop, plus baby changing close to the first floor cafe. Bonus for all the old seats who will coo over the baby. Stack and Still have a lift, and there is plenty of room for the pram. Beware though, if the lift is broken (as it was when I went) you’re heaving the lift up a fair few steps. Burns off the pancakes I guess?! by potatoes_aint_shit (Sat 14th Jan 2023 8:37pm)
  • A quick google search found this - https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/article/18308/Landlord-Registration Imagine they’d be interested in lack of registration and presumably not HMO. by potatoes_aint_shit (Fri 3rd Feb 2023 7:37am)
  • I agree they could make a large sum by properly enforcing parking restrictions. I really struggle to get parked near my flat in the west end, despite living on a permit only street, because so many people park there & head to byres road/botanics etc. If the wardens patrolled more regularly they’d make a fortune (and from a selfish perspective I’d have a much easier time getting my kid from car to door!). by potatoes_aint_shit (Thu 16th Feb 2023 6:55pm)

  • Tempting, but it’s a play park & I’m not sure many parents would welcome the idea of me saying I’m videoing an area their kids are playing in… I certainly wouldn’t. by potatoes_aint_shit (Thu 23rd Feb 2023 11:03am)
  • If they’re well off & have everything I’d suggest something like Cook! vouchers (admittedly not local, but very useful when you have a newborn), or a voucher towards a cleaner etc. Having a newborn is tough & anything that can make it easier ie food, domestic help is much more useful (in my opinion) than ‘stuff’. by potatoes_aint_shit (Sat 25th Feb 2023 11:13am)
  • Exactly! Pay for parking, the folk who live there all have to. by potatoes_aint_shit (Wed 8th Mar 2023 7:25pm)
  • I totally get you - £170 in Hillhead & no visitor permits allowed. That’s why i have no sympathy for folk greeting about getting ticketed! by potatoes_aint_shit (Thu 9th Mar 2023 8:56am)
  • And a right bloody waste of plastic - so many discarded on my street already. by potatoes_aint_shit (Sat 11th Mar 2023 3:43pm)
  • Copying my suggestion from another post - And a right bloody waste of plastic - so many discarded on my street already. Edit - since this is getting some upvotes consider being a boring grass like me & reporting it as litter on the Glasgow App/website. Only takes a minute if you’re already registered for bins and the like. This sub loves a ‘Glasgow is (full of) rubbish’ post, so maybe we can collectively do something about this? by potatoes_aint_shit (Sat 11th Mar 2023 6:22pm)
  • Mandatory calorie labelling isn’t legally in force in Scotland (yet), but lots of the big chains like Wagamamas (mentioned above), McDonalds etc. will display a value. This is an average for a ‘typical’ portion, so won’t be bang on what you’re eating but will usually be close enough if you’re tracking on MyFitnessPal etc. Good for you for trying to make some changes, diet is the hardest part I find! by potatoes_aint_shit (Sun 12th Mar 2023 6:38pm)
  • That’s amazing - I find the exercise bit way easier, just shows that the combination is the tough bit I suppose! by potatoes_aint_shit (Sun 12th Mar 2023 8:03pm)
  • Before someone else jumps in & is less polite, this is fairly frequently asked question in this sub so you’ll find a lot of similar questions and responses if you search. Equally, Glasgow is currently experiencing something of a housing crisis & a flat within the parameters you’re asking for will not be cheap. Obviously whether or not it costs a fortune is relative to your household income & comparisons with where you’re already located. Lastly, I love Glasgow & love living here but I do question why you’re choosing to move here if you don’t really know anything about the city or have connections to it. Perhaps make a visit before you commit any further? by potatoes_aint_shit (Thu 30th Mar 2023 12:57pm)

  • I’ve been out for a few hours today & I’ve found 9 lighters (and counting) in the overgrown bit underneath everyone’s windows. I’d be frightened to try anything with a motor on this, so you’re braver than me! by potatoes_aint_shit (Mon 5th Jun 2023 5:07pm)
  • This is a really helpful response - thanks! When you say about new plants & the solstice, what do you mean? Garden centres won’t have many? I’ve only really thought of solstice being hippies dancing at Stonehenge but I’m assuming that’s not the context here! Pots are a shout - I’m planning on being here long term but I do like the idea of being able to move them. by potatoes_aint_shit (Mon 5th Jun 2023 5:05pm)
  • What an effort! Massive well done - this gives me hope! by potatoes_aint_shit (Mon 5th Jun 2023 5:31pm)
  • Yup, walking along great western road with a pram - chap walking along beside me with one off lead getting really close to my wee one. I kept stopping to let him move further down the road, got sworn at (despite saying nothing) because his dog ‘won’t touch me’. Very reassuring… Can’t win against idiots I’m afraid. by potatoes_aint_shit (Thu 6th Jul 2023 3:57pm)
  • Check the documents you got when you bought - my solicitor pointed out that the Land Certs are mostly out of date but include a burden section, and they specifically flagged the following: “ Dogs and other animals may only be kept provided they are not an annoyance to other proprietors”. You might have the same in yours, so be aware. by potatoes_aint_shit (Fri 7th Jul 2023 10:24pm)
  • Developers want to get rid of the facade claiming it’s too damaged to make it economical… They plan to build modern flats. https://hillhead-cresswell.scot/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/18012_Community_Event-1.1-.pdf There will be another opportunity to object in September.
