  • You got it! The smoke sculpture caught my eye when I was walking around. It was previously called the Old Cotton Mill and it's actually one of the oldest buildings of its type in Glasgow. The top part with the zigzag roof and the huge windows was only added in the 70s - I think it looks amazing! • Pros of Springburn: - 5 minutes away from queen st on the express train (every half hour) - cheap rent - nice park with Saturday park runs and a community village - good community spirit - Lidl and Tesco Extra are a 15 minute walk away - the library and the gym/swimming pool are nice Cons: - it's a deprived area - there is not much to do besides what I've mentioned - some streets are not super safe I lived there when I was a student and it was fine. It's not the best area, not the worst. I felt relatively safe there as a young woman. Happy to answer any questions you might have. by skns_ (Wed 30th Sep 2020 7:34am)
  • Not amazing, to be honest. There is nothing there besides the shopping centre and the huge A road. Unless you are really strapped for cash I would wait for something a bit better. • Yes and there's also quite a big flat space right next to West st subway that would be ideal. Saw a couple of people skating there the other day. It's not far from Pollokshields at all on the South west City way. You could also go down to the Clyde tbh. by skns_ (Sat 24th Apr 2021 10:55pm)

  • Try speaking to Shelter, they are very helpful. Your landlord must protect your deposit in one of the schemes within 30 days of the start of the tenancy otherwise they are liable for compensation to you. You might be able to get your landlord to follow the law if you write to them explaining this. If that fails, applying to the tribunal is free and fairly straightforward. You just fill in a form explaining the facts and email it to the tribunal. Then you get assigned a caseworker who collects the landlord's version of the story. Eventually there is a hearing (on the phone) and the judge makes their decision. https://scotland.shelter.org.uk/housing_advice/paying_for_a_home/deposits/tenancy_deposit_schemes What do you mean when you say you've incurred expenses due to repairs? by skns_ (Thu 1st Jul 2021 8:21am)

  • Is there really enough space on a cycle path to hug any side? Usually you can't hug left because of debris against the kerb, or because you should leave space for avoiding being car-doored. If you hug the right side you will get close-passed by cars. For cycling etiquette I really recommend the app Essential Cycling Skills. It teaches about where to position yourself, how to react in different situations, etc. by skns_ (Tue 6th Jul 2021 8:47am)
  • It's cheap and safe enough, there isn't much happening there. The big Tesco and Lidl are useful. There is a segregated cycle path all the way to the West end which is very handy. by skns_ (Tue 6th Jul 2021 8:57am)
  • Most of it is! From Petershill you want to head down Keppochhill Rd, turn left on Pinkston Rd to rejoin the canal. Go along the canal then go down the hill at Speirs Wharf. At the bottom of the hill keep right and go over the pedestrian bridge. Keep going and you will arrive at St George's cross on pedestrian walkways. At St George's cross there is another footbridge. Go over it and you will be on West Princes St which is very quiet. From there you can cross Kelvingrove park to get to uni. Sorry for the wordy explanation. I only found this route by following the green signs (the ones indicating distance times for walking and cycling). Google maps doesn't seem to know about it. It's also very easy to get to the city centre. You can cycle down past the big Tesco, then at St Roch's high school, cross over to the right side and go under the road. Follow the pedestrian way and when you emerge, take a right. You will cross a bridge with the Royal infirmary on your left. At the top of the bridge, take a right, then left, and rejoin the High st. by skns_ (Tue 6th Jul 2021 2:31pm)

  • I got mine done at Border Blade Sharpening. You send them through the post and they sharpen them and send them back to you. It was £2.50 per knife and no hassle. Made a really big difference, much better than regularly sharpening knives with a cheap sharpener! by skns_ (Thu 16th Sep 2021 7:41am)
  • Have a walk through Pollokshields and you'll see the upvc ban is not enforced. Double glazing is definitely worth it for quality of life - it's not just about savings! by skns_ (Sun 10th Oct 2021 10:42pm)
  • GCC are severely underfunded so I can't see how they could monitor it. Buyers are hardly in a position to demand anything at this time. I also imagine most people would rather move in a place with double glazing already, and it doesn't matter much if it's sash and case. In short, I wouldn't stress about it! by skns_ (Sun 10th Oct 2021 10:56pm)

  • Some advice for your next flat viewings. This won't help you right now, but might help later! Look for somewhere with * central heating * windows on opposite sides of the building so you can get a cross breeze * a bathroom (and a kitchen) with a window If you get all 3, and run a dehumidifier, you should be okay. by skns_ (Fri 12th Nov 2021 7:25am)
  • Would love to know if the central mosque is giving away boosters after 12 weeks instead of 24. Have they changed their guidance since yesterday? by skns_ (Thu 2nd Dec 2021 8:10am)
  • At the central mosque centre they said they were saving Pfizer shots for the young ones and only gave Moderna to over 18s for their boosters. So they must have some stock. Try going first thing in the morning Saturday or Sunday. There was barely any queue when I was there. by skns_ (Fri 10th Dec 2021 6:22am)

  • We rented a one bedroom flat from a landlord in 2020 with 3 storage heaters. It was incredibly inefficient and expensive. We paid £250 a month in the winter. We topped up the meter which was another inconvenience. It was never warm. We didn't use the immersion heater as we couldn't afford it and just did the dishes with cold water. by skns_ (Fri 15th Apr 2022 8:11am)

  • Is it the one on Carleston st, by any chance? We used to stay there 5 years ago. Though the rent was £425... We enjoyed our stay there. Overall Springburn is a deprived area however it does have a nice park, nice library and gym/pool, good medical practice and dentist nearby. Tesco and Lidl are close too and you're a 15 minute cycle away from town. Buses and trains are convenient. Felt safe enough at night. by skns_ (Sun 12th Mar 2023 7:26am)

  • It's good value for money if you commute on two different modes of transport. It's valid on all buses including McGills. To buy one, you need to go to a train station with a passport photo and say where you're going to and from. The ticket person will check in their big book which zones you need to have on your card. There is no bus polis as far as I know, though I suppose the driver could refuse you getting on/make you buy another ticket if you had the wrong zones on your card. Once you've got your card, you need to ask at a subway station to have it activated. Then you can use it just like any subway card (put it down on the gate). To use it on the train you slip the card into the gate. To use it on the bus you need to show it to the bus driver. Simples, isn't it?? Just a different way to use the card for every mode of transport! by skns_ (Wed 26th Apr 2023 5:14pm)
  • I feel like logically you'd need the city centre zone to go there! Maybe pop into a train station and ask? Also, you might want to consider cycling, if it's just southside to the west end. That'll be the best bang for your buck by skns_ (Wed 26th Apr 2023 5:35pm)

  • Well done for taking the initiative! We've been working on our communal back garden for a couple of years now. Here's what I learned: - get other people involved. If you don't already know your neighbours, chap their door, introduce yourself, and explain what you want to do. Try and get a Whatsapp group going. Similarly if your next door neighbours use their gardens, talk to them! You will find like-minded people who will want to help, and that will also help with the rubbish. - make use of Glasgow Tool Library. You can borrow a strimmer, a mower, loppers, etc from there. - do a sun map of your garden (write down where the sun is at different times of the day). This should tell you where you want to plant things and where you can put your bins/compost heap/table. - once you've cleared the weeds, cover any bare soil areas with carpet or cardboard otherwise the weeds will come back. Try to focus on one section at a time when you plant things. - get a table and chairs (Facebook marketplace and Gumtree are good for this). This will make a massive difference - you might find other people now use the garden too. by skns_ (Tue 6th Jun 2023 6:43am)
