  • https://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-94191209.html Would somewhere like this flat in Shawlands be the kind of place you are looking for? That bit is a 10 min walk from Pollok Park and Queens Park and a 12 min commute to town on the train. Plus great independent shops, pubs and cafes in the area for when things get back to normal by thatjaneone (Sat 4th Jul 2020 9:39pm)
  • As someone else said it would be worth checking out Dennistoun area if you are going to Glasgow Caledonian but if I were you I'd also look around Queens Park and Shawlands area as there are is a good bike lane from there along Victoria Rd into the city centre by thatjaneone (Tue 14th Jul 2020 7:56pm)
  • The expansion of the subway is something my late dad tried to push all his working life. He was an engineer there and spent a good deal of time looking at possibilities partly as there are a fair number of unused railway tunnels under the city. I remember at one point in the 80s there was discussion about the Battlefield Rest being a possible station. If anyone wants more information can I recommend this book https://www.amazon.co.uk/Circles-Under-Clyde-History-Underground/dp/1854141902 It is a bit short on plot but has all the technical info on the history of the subway that anyone could want by thatjaneone (Thu 16th Jul 2020 10:41am)
  • Lots of West End answers so putting in a couple of Southside options I love the Camphill Ave flats that look out over Glasgow or the houses in Morag Place in Strathbungo. by thatjaneone (Fri 17th Jul 2020 4:09pm)
  • You could try the Scottish Design Centre. They have an outlet in the Buchanan Galleries, a city centre shopping mall, and sell locally make products from small independent designers. https://www.scottishdesignexchange.com by thatjaneone (Mon 20th Jul 2020 10:16am)

  • I live in Shawlands, don't have a car and find it pretty easy to get about the city by public transport. I sometimes get the impression that the people who moan about buses the most are the ones who never get on them. Yes you have to be a bit more organised but it's not generally that hard to live without a car in the city. I get that not every area is as well served for public transport but we have a pretty decent and affordable local rail service which covers most of the city, plus the subway and buses. Perhaps more integrated ticketing or even free public transport would get people out of their cars. When I do need to drive somewhere I use one of the CoWheels car club cars which are really convenient. Would totally recommend checking them out if anyone is considering an alternative to car ownership by thatjaneone (Fri 28th Aug 2020 7:24pm)
  • I know that Shawlands is very well connected and that's one of the things I love about it and I am aware that not every part of Glasgow is like that, but many are fantastic for public transport. I would love to see more people who do live in the well connected areas ditching their cars, it would make life in the city better for everyone. I think people have been lead to believe that you can't live without a car when you can really quite easily. I have 4 teenagers who are very self sufficient when it come to travelling around the city and the joy is that I'm not a glorified taxi service for them which is a huge bonus. Totally not having a go at people who need their cars but many people don't but believe the public transport is crap myth. by thatjaneone (Sat 29th Aug 2020 10:12am)
  • I'd be up for a bit of Gorilla gardening on the South side. I'm in the Shawlands/Pollokshaws area and there are lots of bits of land that would benefit from some attention by thatjaneone (Sun 4th Oct 2020 6:44pm)
  • Couldn't agree more, I understand that HMRC are investigating so hopefully they will be held to account for their actiond. Such a shame as Blue Dog was a great place to drinking the staff were great but the owner was clearly a crook. by thatjaneone (Tue 23rd Feb 2021 7:55pm)
  • "As far as we could see our tax accounts (RTI) looked normal and we were getting furlough as expected. The owners kept us in the dark until November when they told us they weren't getting payments from HMRC and our furlough would stop. They blamed it on a "technical glitch" Any complaints to HMRC about issues with tax from us were brushed off with a "talk to your employer" and we couldn't get any further with it. The payroll is outsourced and we could never get other information about what went wrong. Nothing the owners said matched with what has come out in the news recently." - quote from one of the employees by thatjaneone (Wed 24th Feb 2021 10:00pm)

  • The football club need to take some responsibility for the behaviour of its fans. Yesterday's events caused businesses to loose money when they were instructed to close early, hospital staff to treat numerous injuries from fans fighting each other not to mention the cost of the clean up. • I tend to be on rush hour trains and those passengers seem to comply. I'm not surprised to hear that later at night its not like that by thatjaneone (Mon 7th Feb 2022 12:51pm)
  • The problem is made worse by the stupid number of massive SUVs that are trundling about the streets. These are suburban streets, they are not designed for bulky off road vehicles that are obviously more damaging to roads than more appropriate city cars. I'm not defending GCC but it could spend 10 x as much on road repairs and they still wouldn't be in great nick as they were never designed for the volume of type of traffic using them. There won't is any slack in the budget unless they whack up council taxes and noone wants that so extra money won't be available to sort this anytime soon. by thatjaneone (Tue 22nd Feb 2022 4:46pm)

  • Would be great if someone looking into fostering services across Scotland and in Glasgow in particular. Most of the children are cared for by 'in house' Local Authority carers but most of the money goes to private agencies, leading to huge discrepancies between the support children receive Some figures available here https://autonomy.work/portfolio/fosteringstandards/ by thatjaneone (Thu 7th Jul 2022 1:30pm)
  • Just phone and ask the receptionist for an appointment to talk to the doctor. You will probably be offered a telephone appointment in the first instance but if you really don't feel comfortable with that then just tell the receptionist that you would prefer to talk to GP in person. Don't be surprised if you are asked what you want to discuss but just keep it very general and mention anxiety or mental health concerns, it's just to make sure they're making sure you're seen in an appropriate timescale. Just phoning for an appointment can seem daunting if you are struggling with anxiety but I'm sure talking to someone will help. Good luck to you, you are doing the right thing by reaching out for help. by thatjaneone (Thu 21st Jul 2022 10:36pm)

  • I know this sounds like total bullshit but I remember the day that was filmed. My dad worked in the depot at Govan and took me and my brother in to meet Peter Purvis and he gave us both Blue Peter badges. The whole lifting trains out by crane like some giant toy trains set was wild. It would have been more fun if they'd stuck with that system by thatjaneone (Fri 3rd Feb 2023 6:25pm)
  • And people wonder why there are pot holes everywhere by thatjaneone (Wed 8th Feb 2023 4:24pm)
  • As a long time resident of Shawlands can I just say I'm not surprised. They're just lucky the teachers were on strike otherwise they could have attracted unwanted attention from the local weans on their way home by thatjaneone (Wed 1st Mar 2023 10:42am)
  • The roads weren't designed for the volume of traffic they now take, and cars have got much much heavier with so many driving massive SUVs The council is broke, that's the bottom line and extra money spent on road deprives children's services or day centres so we can't just demand that extra money is invested in the road network when 47% of Glaswegians don't have access to a car bit arecstill expected to pay for the road network. Perhaps individual car ownership is no longer sustainable? by thatjaneone (Sun 19th Mar 2023 8:27pm)
  • Electric vehicles are definitely not the answer. We don't have the infrastructure and people don't want to queue and then spend 45 minutes charging their cars. Where I live in the city (Shawlands) there is great public transport but that's obviously not the way it is everywhere so that needs to improve. As soon as public transport is quicker and cheaper than taking your own car the roads will improve enormously. by thatjaneone (Sun 19th Mar 2023 9:43pm)
  • Yep, that's exactly what we need. Reliable affordable public transport that doesn't discriminate against people living in post war estates by thatjaneone (Sun 19th Mar 2023 9:44pm)
  • The children mining cobalt for our in the DRC and risking their lives on a daily basis would probably not agree with you. It is another example of rich nations exploiting poorer ones. I'm not saying that we don't need an alternative to petrol cars, I'm just saying that electric batteries aren't the answer. Hydrogen driven vehicles would be a good alternative but it's Shell and BP that are currently making money out of rapid charging points so its in their interests to keep going despite the scarce resources needed to make the batteries. by thatjaneone (Sun 19th Mar 2023 10:22pm)
  • The DRC produces 70%of the world's cobalt with Russia next in terms of production. But if you want to believe that electric car manufacturers aren't using these reserves then that up to you by thatjaneone (Sun 19th Mar 2023 10:47pm)
  • The roads were built when the houses were built so the areas with blonde sandstone tenements were built over 120 years ago when private cars weren't an issue. Pollok, Darnley, Easterhouse etc was built in the 1950s/60s when owning a car was a luxury and even if they did have one it was a Morris Minor or something of that size.. Yes they can resurface roads but the base layers are what they are so no-one can be that surprised that they don't cope with everyone who feels its their right to drive 5 mins down the road by thatjaneone (Mon 20th Mar 2023 8:58am)
  • Or you could ask, why have we not found a better way of moving people around the city than thousands of individual metal boxes on wheels. The answer is good public transport not improving the roads for the 53% of the residents who happen to use a car by thatjaneone (Mon 20th Mar 2023 9:00am)
  • I don't own a car and use public transport daily and it is generally fine. It amuses me that all the people who never use it are the ones who constantly tell me how bad it is. My main grip is the price of the buses but generally an all day ticket is cheaper than the cost of parking in many areas by thatjaneone (Mon 20th Mar 2023 9:18am)
  • The statistics say they don't have access to a vehicle but I expect some of them use taxis and others will rely on public transport and bikes I would imagine by thatjaneone (Mon 20th Mar 2023 1:56pm)
  • As I said elsewhere in this thread we need good public transport all over the city including for those living on the periphery of Glasgow where there wasn't much thought put into the infrastructure when the areas were built up. I'm not denying that some people need to use cars but I live in an area with excellent public transport and I have people who live near me till me the service is useless when they rarely use it themselves. The bottom line is that the road system isn't coping and we need a rethink by thatjaneone (Mon 20th Mar 2023 2:03pm)
  • Given that thr council is so broke it hasn't increased the allowance for fostered children over 10 yo since 2013, I can't see that those prices are over the top. Yes it would be nice if they hadn't increased the concession rate but its hardly exorbitant for the amount of space you get. Most of the people I know who have allotments can afford that amount and given the health benefits its much cheaper than the gym. by thatjaneone (Sun 2nd Apr 2023 5:22pm)
  • When my partner was 19 he got a job as the Solripe complaints worker. Basically when someone spilt lime aid or raspberry aid or whatever on the sofa and it left a vivid stain he would turn up with 6 free bottles as compensation. He'd only just moved to Scotland from southern Africa and he says it was the most bizarre period of his life by thatjaneone (Tue 4th Apr 2023 12:53pm)
  • My suggestion would be Toro on Pollokshaws Rd. In my opinion it's the best coffee in the city and it handy for the Burrell Collection in Pollok Park if you want to check that out and see some Highland Cows too by thatjaneone (Tue 4th Apr 2023 3:08pm)

  • Worth checking out Pollok Park and the Burrell Collection. The museum has recently been refurbished and the park is home to the city's herd of Highland Cows by thatjaneone (Sat 8th Apr 2023 11:42am)
  • Totally agree, having a go at workers who are brave enough to speak out to improve working conditions for themselves and their colleagues is ridiculous. We only have annual leave, sick pay working conditions that don't kill us because people spoke up and fought for us all. Union bashing is the quickest way to lose these rights again by thatjaneone (Sat 22nd Apr 2023 3:58pm)
  • I totally agree when unions get too big and officials get too close to management they not only lose their strength but also the respect of the members. I'm a former rep and a member of a small grassroots union similar to IWW who were fighting for the Saramanga workers and I have nothing but respect for those guys. IMO smaller unions are often the best option for their members by thatjaneone (Sat 22nd Apr 2023 5:17pm)
  • Hopefully you've applied for your National Entitlement Card so you can get about the city for free by bus. I'd start by getting on a bus in the city centre and staying on for the entire route and see where it goes. Keep an eye out for anything interesting you see en route and jump off and explore. My other suggestions would be to spend some walking around the necropolis and taking in the views and some of the amazing old tombstones and spending a day exploring Pollok Park and the Burrell Collection. • It's this kind of positivity that keeps Glasgow going by thatjaneone (Fri 26th May 2023 6:59pm)
  • I don't think there's anything wrong with brick and mortar shops either, but realistically, we are never going to need all these big retail units the way we did 20 odd years. Instead the area could be a vibrant community with flats, small local shops, public spaces and great public transport right on the doorstep. by thatjaneone (Fri 26th May 2023 9:18pm)
  • There is a real lack of small flats in the rental market right now and this could give people the chance to move out of their mums back bedroom and live independently. I stayed in a flat in Ingram St in my early twenties and I loved it, most successful cities that I've visited have people living in the centre. by thatjaneone (Fri 26th May 2023 9:14pm)

  • https://burrellcollection.com/ The Burrell Colleection is a purpose built gallery to house the vast collection from a wealthy Glasgow family from the 1900s. It is free to get in and is a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours It is set in Pollok Park, which is a lovely big country park on the southside of the city where Glasgow's herd of Highland cows live. There is also an impressive Georgian country house in the park, which is also open to the public, although it charges a small entrance fee. As a bonus, you can pick up a coffee from Toro near the entrance.
