  • Probably worth knowing the reason why we have faith based schools in Scotland is due to sectarianism. The Catholic children(usually the poor Irish immigrants) were not being educated due to their religion because back then, the non-dom schools were really Church of Scotland schools. We've reached a point now where the majority of the population is now secular or at least not so religious about being religious, so over time we may see the gradual decline of faith based schools. I went to a Catholic school and as much as I despise the Catholic church I was never taught in school to hate other religions especially protestants and I loathe the implication that these schools are the root of sectarianism in Scotland when it really wasn't all that long ago you could legally refuse to hire someone because they were Catholic. This idea that we're religiously segregated in Scotland is nonsense and even back in the 60s, my parents mixed all the time with the protestant children in the neighbourhood. Sectarianism in Scotland has historically been anti-Catholic/anti-irish but we have moved on significantly since then and the majority of the country do not care, its mainly just 20 year old moronic boys talking a lot of guff about Irish history based on what football team in Glasgow they support. It is funny though to hear the Orange order complain about how discriminated they are because we don't all roll out the red carpet for their pointless marches. by Lambisco (Sun 3rd Jul 2022 10:52am)

  • I asked the seller of my house what they wanted but they were a bit awkward about it, I think they didn't want to appear greedy and asking for too much as it was their parents house they were selling. I went a little over the HR value and got it. When I was selling my flat I had no intention of accepting less than the HR value and told everyone who asked when they came to view. The estate agent still wanted to start the offers over a bit below the HR value which was feckin pointless as some people but offers in at the offers over value and it was just a waste of their time. The thing about either a verbal or written offer, only a written offer will be officially accepted but they can still pull out at any time before the missives are signed. Happened to a family member of mine, they got an offer accepted but then later someone came and offered more so they had to up their offer again. There's also some developers who secretly pay estate agents to give them the first go at a property and not have to compete. Often the sellers have no idea this is happening as well and they could get more money. by Lambisco (Thu 7th Jul 2022 11:16am)
  • Does the Ben Nevis have a mid week trad night? by Lambisco (Thu 7th Jul 2022 11:20am)
  • Oh yeah it definitely looks shit in comparison but they never had any hassle living there. Although back when I was looking to rent I was wandering around haghill and was pointing at a for rent sign in a flat window and this woman walked past and said don't even bother it's absolutely mental up there. So maybe my pals got lucky and lived in the only good block. There's flats in haghill for selling over £110k now, gentrification wave is moving further east. Estate agents are now referring to parkhead as dennistoun east. by Lambisco (Thu 7th Jul 2022 12:14pm)
  • There's plenty of over priced city centre flats that have been on the market for years. The demand is driven by people wanting to live in the cool neighbourhoods or as close to them as possible. There's also an 11 bed house in dennistoun that has been for sale for near 3 years now by Lambisco (Thu 7th Jul 2022 4:52pm)
  • It would be great to see coverage of positive things happening in small.communities in Glasgow, such as communal gardens to provide fresh food to the local community and other social initiatives. Sometimes the people who run these things are obviously more concerned with running these things than getting the word out. It could help people in other areas to set up similar schemes that would help their local area. Less of the 'this website said Glasgow is the best/worst place to live' crap or have you seen this Shawlands flat for sale. by Lambisco (Thu 7th Jul 2022 6:05pm)
  • Ah Tollcross, Dennistoun east now. Remember when Dennistoun was classed as merchant city east? The gallowgate and govan will be the next in the gentrification wave. Flats getting built that sit between Duke st and gallowgate, pokey wee things going for at least 200k. Also I hear they're building a walk bridge between Govan and Partick so that'll have an impact. by Lambisco (Fri 8th Jul 2022 2:24pm)
  • I'm not convinced it is, the population of Glasgow is increasing. Probably some London exodus, coming up here or back home and having enough cash to pay over the odds or people realising that it's actually quite a nice place to live and no you won't immediately get stabbed as soon as you arrive. The city has always been very unequal, life expectancy can vary as much as 10 years between areas that are only a short walk away. Although the most deprived areas in Scotland are in Inverclyde now. by Lambisco (Fri 8th Jul 2022 2:20pm)
  • Who says they're all English? Plenty of Scots moved down to London and some are coming back with a shit load of cash from selling their Camden box. by Lambisco (Fri 8th Jul 2022 2:37pm)
  • Probably because for decades Glasgow has had a dangerous reputation which, for those who grew up here, wasn't really justified as the violence was heavily concentrated in specific areas. Anyway for a while it's been pretty cheap to live here, it's roughly the 4th/5th biggest city in the UK so there's loads to do and ridiculously close to some epic countryside, there are many good reasons why people would want to live in Glasgow. by Lambisco (Fri 8th Jul 2022 2:35pm)

  • Can confirm this too, I know when the bins have been emptied as there's more litter around the street by Lambisco (Mon 18th Jul 2022 1:13pm)
  • It's not about poverty it's about entitlement, the amount of people I've seen drop litter next to their kids and say leave it it's someone else's job to do that. Enough people generally believe that the council tax is enough to pay for someone to literally walk behind them and pick up their shit. I think it would help a bit to educate people more on where council tax money goes and how much it would cost to have street cleaners on near enough every street. Also just got to start fining people who do drop litter. Council really are bad at communication and they could probably do with educating people more about this. by Lambisco (Mon 18th Jul 2022 1:19pm)

  • Not sure if this is accurate but I had heard the plan was to demolish them and build new flats so the majority of people were moved out but some landlords refused to sell or perhaps they weren't being offered enough by the council. So those landlords kept renting out the flats and as there's so few people there the buildings fell in to further disrepair. by Lambisco (Wed 27th Jul 2022 11:28pm)

  • The original tram network went out as far as coatbridge. A lot of the tracks still exist under the tarmac. I remember my grandad saying how no one wanted to get rid of the trams but the corpy just went ahead and did it anyway, which is usually how stuff happens in Glasgow. Fuck everyone else we 5 people think we should just get rid of an extensive tram network cos it's old by Lambisco (Fri 12th Aug 2022 9:54am)
  • Really? I live about the same distance from George Square but have fibre optic and over 400mbps speeds. by Lambisco (Fri 12th Aug 2022 9:50am)
  • There were more plans to build even more roads through the east end. This plan was shelved years ago but for some reason it resurfaced recently, there was a plan to build a motorway from bishop Briggs to rutherglen that would go down the east side of Alexandra park, absolutely chopping up the east end just so the people on the edge could get across the city even quicker. It was supposed to stop near the forge to attract shoppers from a bit further out. Also there's actually 4 motorways that go through Glasgow. M8, M74, M80 and M77 which cuts off people from Pollok getting access to the country park and of course there was no chance of cutting off Dumbreck residents from the park. This was created to make it easier for people in East ren and Ayrshire to get to the centre. It's almost as if decisions are always made in the interest of the better off. by Lambisco (Fri 12th Aug 2022 10:00am)
  • Why's it under threat? I go down frequently to the barras and they've been putting money into the place recently, repainting the place and attracting new stall holders. • Go to the lighthouse museum and go up the macintosh tower, great views of the city centre. There's a separate viewing platform that can be accessed via a lift if the stairs aren't an option. Spend a day in the southside visiting Queens and Pollok park if you can, think too many people stick to the west end. by Lambisco (Tue 16th Aug 2022 4:01pm)

  • I used to live in the centre but I would recommend moving a little bit out to finnieston(right next to Anderston) or a wee bit further to Partick (west end etc) as they have a more neighborhood feel and there are some good parks nearby. You'll probably struggle to find a house so I would expect to live in a flat, most people do. Since you're working in the centre you could really live anywhere in Glasgow as public transport in the city tends to be directed all to the centre from all parts of the city. Southside such as shawlands, queens park are nice neighbourhoods, lots of good parks down there too. You'll also get more for your money outside of the west end by Lambisco (Fri 8th Dec 2023 8:59pm)
  • Glasgow airport charges £20 to get lost property back by Lambisco (Fri 8th Dec 2023 9:10pm)
  • There really isn't much in the way of community in the centre and some of the neighbourhoods like shawlands, dennistoun etc have a more village feel as they have pretty much everything you need nearby. Trains from the southside all go to Glasgow central and that would be a reasonable enough distance to Anderston. I personally feel it's better not to live too close to work. The southside is getting more expensive but you probably could get what you need for 1600. by Lambisco (Sat 9th Dec 2023 9:37am)
  • There aren't any houses in the city centre. Also £120k for a flat in finnieston?? You might get a studio flat for that amount by Lambisco (Sat 9th Dec 2023 1:09pm)
