  • OU graduate here, I studied part time with them and they were great. I got my BSc in 2018. So flexible and understanding for me needing to work at the same time. Lots of my classmates had kids and full time jobs on top of studying. Many employers look more favourably on it because an OU degree means you need self motivation, organisation etc in a different way to a conventional degree. There is support, but all your learning is self-paced. I'm pretty sure you need to be signed up to an official degree route to make credits from courses count though (which starts a timer that gives you 12 or so years to complete a degree IIRC). But even short courses can look great on applications, it's all in how you spin them. It shows interest in subjects and motivation and that you don't need your hand held to complete a course. If it's something you're interested in, happy to answer questions! by SeabirdSarah (Sat 22nd Jan 2022 1:49pm)
  • I signed up to Cuckoo when I first moved here in July, and they've been fantastic. I live in a household with two people and about 3 or 4 devices on the go at a time and we get consistent speeds, never really notice it being slow, and the customer service is great. Once or twice I've had it reconnect during a zoom, but over 6 months you really can't complain. I did a lot of reading on my options before choosing and it seemed like the smaller companies were much more reliable. Think I have a referral money off code somewhere if you wanted to go with them! by SeabirdSarah (Thu 3rd Feb 2022 5:20pm)
  • The 78 has them - at least Scrabble, possibly others! by SeabirdSarah (Thu 14th Apr 2022 10:54pm)
  • I was there 10 years ago, and was in halls, and that felt like the norm for first years. I loved it and made friends I'm still pals with today, but hearing the nightly parties around the street got old after a few months. We met a few folk in private halls, who iirc didn't rate it for sociability but they seemed to make friends easily if they were prepared to get themselves out to events and clubs etc even if they had to go solo initially. My brother went private in first year in another city, and he always seemed to get unlucky with his flatmates. I dunno if it was because the kind of person to choose private halls tended to be less social/more difficult, or if he just had bad luck, or if he was too shy. Those are the only experiences I can draw from, so hope that's somewhat helpful! And good luck, I had a lot of fun at uni there! by SeabirdSarah (Mon 18th Apr 2022 10:19am)
  • No problem! I was in Murano, which back then (maybe still now?) had a reputation as the 'party halls'. There were flats of 5 rooms, and flats of 10-12, and I was really glad I chose a flat of 5. So much better being friends with the party flat rather than the party flat being your home. The Queen Margaret halls were my first choice as a compromise between Murano and private, but too expensive at the time. Also, this is a personal thing, but just from my experience, I would much rather move in somewhere with shared loos/showers than having ensuite. It sounds great having your own, but in reality it's a shitey corner of an already tiny room where everything just gets wet from the shower. Also it means everyone locks themselves in their bedrooms a lot more as no reason to leave. by SeabirdSarah (Mon 18th Apr 2022 6:41pm)
  • I've got a free app on my phone called 'seek', it uses AI to identify pretty much anything in nature - birds, mammals, fungi, but obviously the easiest is plants because they don't move. It's surprisingly fun to pop out and go see if I can find a new plant. It's like a very nerdy version of finding Pokémon! The bits around Glasgow 'left for nature' are best, there's a few on Glasgow green and round cuningar loop. My partner and I got so into it that we now go on walks and one person scans it with their phone, the other person tries to identify the plant manually. by SeabirdSarah (Fri 22nd Apr 2022 10:17pm)
  • I'll have to look into that, thanks! I love Seek but there are a lot of plants is just tells me are 'dicots' and gets no further. by SeabirdSarah (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 1:34pm)
  • What's a car door monster? by SeabirdSarah (Fri 29th Apr 2022 9:09pm)
  • There's a retail market in Bridgeton with a fruit and veg van that parks up in the centre, Tuesdays and Fridays, really cheap. It might be a bit of of your way especially as the train station is closed just now, but when it opens up again it's quick to get here from Patrick etc! The company's called Firm Banana if I remember right, and they might do other veg vans in the city, not sure. by SeabirdSarah (Fri 29th Apr 2022 10:54pm)
  • I moved there a year ago and I like it, it's not noisy except when there's football/orange order/the odd boy racer at night, it's walking distance to town, close to Glasgow green/the river. Only wee shops, but the polish shop has amazing fresh bread, and there's a veg van on Tuesdays and Fridays. The train into town takes 5 minutes and costs under 2 quid return, if I want a bougie day out its 15 minutes to dennistoun, and the forge is about 20 minutes walk. The afro-caribbean restaurant is fab but that's about it for restaurants. There's several pubs but I don't go in them so don't know what they're like! When I moved, I got a lot of comments from friends about how rough the east end is etc. But it's all overblown, it's a generally quiet, chilled and friendly part of the city. There's a bit of a small town feel to it and folk will smile as they pass or strike up conversations in shops (that's maybe just Glasgow in general though; I'm from Edinburgh). I just avoid it during any Celtic/rangers games! by SeabirdSarah (Wed 22nd Jun 2022 12:23am)
  • I've got nothing to add about the city that others haven't already said, but if you've got questions about starting a cadetship in Glasgow, let me know. I'm a female cadet who started theirs a year ago (currently on a sea phase). :) by SeabirdSarah (Sun 26th Jun 2022 8:38am)
  • I'm in the east end, and went with cuckoo as they were so simple (every single customer pays £30/month) and user friendly. They let me name my WiFi and password before it even arrived! There's 3 people in my house and it goes absolutely fine, and I just use the router they gave me. I looked it up ahead of time, it got good reviews, and since installing a year ago I've never needed to reset it. Really impressed! by SeabirdSarah (Wed 29th Jun 2022 5:15am)
  • Great. I didn't think I'd had any looked at but I haven't been to a gig since before covid, so thought it could have changed! Thanks :) by SeabirdSarah (Tue 12th Jul 2022 1:04pm)
  • I'm on the same street! I've really enjoyed moving to Bridgeton but the revving of the engines is easily my least favourite thing about it. I tried making a complaint to the council via an online form and you get a message saying they will contact you within 7 days, but they don't. I've started recognising some of them out and about, one of the bikes does a big loop by James Street, Bellgrove, up to High Street, and back. Unfortunately the roads are relatively straight and pretty perfect for getting up speed, so I think the only hope is wait for speed bumps. by SeabirdSarah (Sat 16th Jul 2022 3:15pm)
  • Sarah at Tribe Tattoo through in Edinburgh is great at delicate tattoos and loves nature-themed tattoos. She's great to work with too, I got a delicate dotwork tat with her :) by SeabirdSarah (Sun 17th Jul 2022 11:08pm)
  • Bantaba in Bridgeton serves it, along with a couple of great African lagers! As others have said, it's very strong and bitter. by SeabirdSarah (Tue 6th Sep 2022 2:21am)
  • It's a bit of a journey in Edinburgh, but Cameratiks is exactly what you're looking for. Fantastic customer service too! by SeabirdSarah (Sat 1st Oct 2022 2:11am)
  • The Glasgow Life Gorbals gym has one, it's just across the river from the centre by SeabirdSarah (Wed 2nd Nov 2022 6:05pm)
  • Bantaba in Bridgeton serves it, along with a few other African beers! by SeabirdSarah (Tue 8th Nov 2022 12:21am)
  • First floor, near the Argyle Street (subway station) entrance :) by SeabirdSarah (Thu 10th Nov 2022 11:02pm)
  • Yessss!! I've always been intrigued by this (I just laugh when I see the signs because it's a 'secret bunker' on very obvious brown signs on the M90). Looks like there's heaps of cool stuff there :D you're a star! by SeabirdSarah (Thu 10th Nov 2022 11:37pm)
  • He went to Bovington last year and loved it! He got into tanks watching all their YouTube videos. If I ever manage to convince him to go to London for fun then the IWM sounds brilliant :) by SeabirdSarah (Fri 11th Nov 2022 8:20am)
  • No that's great! I honestly couldn't find anywhere outwith of Bovington so these are good places to keep in mind for weekend trips by SeabirdSarah (Fri 11th Nov 2022 10:16am)
  • Tape strips of tissue paper to the outside of an umbrella. Jellyfish by SeabirdSarah (Mon 26th Dec 2022 1:07am)
  • The bus is running (they're doing a Saturday service tomorrow). They don't allow bikes unfortunately :( it's not an absolute must to bring the bike, as I think you can hire them on the island(?) so is an option! by SeabirdSarah (Mon 2nd Jan 2023 10:15pm)
  • Oof, thanks so much for the route! It's certainly an option as it's meant to be alright weather (not raining) tomorrow morning. I've got to do the route back the day after, so I might die cycling 60 miles in 2 days... by SeabirdSarah (Mon 2nd Jan 2023 10:20pm)
  • The issue isn't so much cycling there (fun, adventure, off to Bute) but cycling back the next day (fuck me I'm exhausted, only 4 hours of pedalling to go). That's 66 miles in 2 days, fully laden on a 13kg bike, which is too much for me unfortunately. Maybe in summer! by SeabirdSarah (Tue 3rd Jan 2023 7:54am)
  • Agreed, I love the fact that it's a circle and the simplicity of it but having moved from the west to the east end I've noticed the loss of the subway! by SeabirdSarah (Sun 8th Jan 2023 3:06pm)
  • They're cute but it's kinda a shame they've made it up here too, they're a non-native species and unfortunately out-compete native wildlife for food. They've randomly appeared in Scotland only in the last few years with few in the north of england so I suspect they might have been purposefully released :( by SeabirdSarah (Tue 7th Feb 2023 10:58am)
  • Only if you're a captain or a pilot unfortunately (I'm a seafarer and got very optimistic there!) by SeabirdSarah (Sat 11th Feb 2023 3:47pm)
  • That's great to hear! I have wondered before what would happen if I were called while at sea 😅 did they have to send a letter first? by SeabirdSarah (Sat 11th Feb 2023 3:53pm)
  • That's probably more of a combination between mixamitosis flare-ups and the loss of habitat for them 🤷 by SeabirdSarah (Thu 16th Mar 2023 3:30pm)
  • I hear that if two parakeets work together, they can lift a grown rabbit and carry it off to eat it by SeabirdSarah (Fri 17th Mar 2023 1:02am)
  • The Bothy Project would be perfect! https://www.bothyproject.com/ I know people who have stayed there and absolutely loved it. It's specifically designed to be a creative retreat :) Alternatively, you could explore doing something like wwoofing or workaway, if you found the right one. There might be one where you can stay in your own cabin in exchange for a few hours work a day. I did this a while back as a study retreat for a few weeks and had my own bothy so I could just unplug the router and get the woodburner on. It was awesome. by SeabirdSarah (Fri 24th Mar 2023 12:57am)
  • Sometimes on the display screen at the platform there's a wee picture of the train carriages with the letters assigned to them. Aside from that, the only ScotRail train I've been on with labelled carriages is the west highland line one and the carriage name on one of the upper windows just next to the door. It's not tally obvious as you have to look up a bit. by SeabirdSarah (Sat 13th May 2023 12:30am)
  • Personally, I've almost stopped using it as the days have got longer and warmer. I'm no longer inside my house while it's pishing down outside wanting a warm meal to be delivered. That combined with the crazy delivery and service fees, plus the wait times on the last couple orders, mean that if I do want a takeaway, I've been going old fashioned and phoning up the local takeaway, and walking over 10 minutes later to pick up. by SeabirdSarah (Sun 14th May 2023 11:02pm)
  • There is a machine, just at the top of the stairs beyond the ticket booth. Definitely a good idea to avoid getting stuck at the queue at the other end, although you end up kicking yourself if they've flung all the barriers open in Argyle Street due to escalators broken/no staff/post rush hour and you've got a ticket! by SeabirdSarah (Fri 9th Jun 2023 1:54am)
  • Last time I saw him, he booted the ball up and across the square and it hit a woman squarely on the head. He shouted "heids" just before, but that just stopped her in her tracks, where she prompty got hit. I don't have a very high opinion of the guy 😅 by SeabirdSarah (Fri 16th Jun 2023 1:48am)
