  • I used to live in Seattle, moved to Glasgow. Got a job as a phone monkey. My very first day on the phones I was almost in tears because I was afraid people were going to get mad at me to have them repeat themselves over and over and over again. The reality is: people here see **my**accent as a novelty and absolutely nobody has been mad at me for having them repeat themselves (even a couple times). After about a year I understood more accents than my native Glaswegian wife! Take it from me: you’ll be fine :) Workplaces here don’t seem to have any problems hiring a non-Scottish person. by Xenophule (Sun 5th Apr 2020 9:38am)

  • Apparently DPD is using Hermes as a backup. Sorry to hear about your Hermes woes. I sure have had mine. Hate them so much. by Xenophule (Thu 15th Oct 2020 9:10pm)
  • That’s truly awful. I’m really sorry about your package being treated like that. Hopefully you got a better one with a better delivery. by Xenophule (Thu 15th Oct 2020 9:23pm)
  • I would pay extra to not use Hermes. Or a subscription—but a reverse subscription where I’m buying the ability to *not* get something from Hermes. by Xenophule (Thu 15th Oct 2020 9:48pm)
  • Holy shit that’s awful! Hermes totally needs to take the hit on that one! Or the company should at least re-send you your order with anyone but Hermes. by Xenophule (Fri 16th Oct 2020 9:44am)
  • No kidding! But you just *know* it’ll show up on time the one day you decide to leave the house instead. by Xenophule (Fri 16th Oct 2020 9:43am)
  • Wow! Forging a signature like that should be illegal somehow. Though since it’s a private company I suppose the most you can do is put in a formal complaint and take it as far as you can. by Xenophule (Fri 16th Oct 2020 9:42am)
  • That’s a really weird one. Sounds like the worst kind of gerrymandering. by Xenophule (Fri 16th Oct 2020 9:41am)
  • Ha! This would make more sense if they actually deliver it lol by Xenophule (Fri 16th Oct 2020 9:47am)
  • Oh my! A success story! I’m really happy you’ve had pleasant experiences :) I hope it continues to be pleasant wherever in Glasgow you move to! by Xenophule (Fri 16th Oct 2020 9:47am)
  • It’s probably because Hermes is the lowest bidder of delivery services. Sometimes big-wigs only see numbers and not satisfaction. Did you let the company know you stopped doing business with them because of Hermes? Complaints like that can sometimes get the attention of higher-ups. by Xenophule (Fri 16th Oct 2020 9:46am)
  • Haha I’ll have to find my local driver and become his friend now. by Xenophule (Fri 16th Oct 2020 11:47am)

  • Usually these pink/purple colors are opposite the sunset—the shadow of Earth, known as The Belt of Venus So whether you knew it or not, your comment is brilliant by Xenophule (Sun 3rd Jan 2021 3:48pm)
  • You’re very welcome! by Xenophule (Sun 3rd Jan 2021 7:26pm)
  • Haha we have the same reaction—sometimes the Belt is prettier than the actual sunset! Here in Knightswood we can see the Campsie Fells (hills with snow on them) which is opposite the sun this time of year. They get hella pink sometimes and the sunset is boring, and sometimes they’re both great! Last night we were at the West Necropolis and took pictures of both (it was pretty glorious in both directions) I haven’t processed the photos yet, but let me know if you’d like me to tell you when I do :) by Xenophule (Sun 3rd Jan 2021 7:30pm)
  • Hey! [I finally processed all my photos from that day :)](http://fullerfotos.co.uk/index.php?/category/560) by Xenophule (Sat 16th Jan 2021 8:50pm)
  • Ha! I love this by Xenophule (Fri 12th Feb 2021 10:50pm)
  • Nice! I love the composition! Did you change the sky color? I’m not usually a fan of drastic color changes, but I like it here. by Xenophule (Wed 3rd Mar 2021 6:11am)

  • Oh god we saw this scam artist today! I wanted to take video, make a sign, just yell at people putting money in his basket, etc., but seeing it here has made my day. To be fair, he’s following the logical path The Tin Bin Man found: people will put money in your basket as long as you’re next to sound (whether you’re pretending to play the music or not). Even if he could play the song: why bother putting in the effort if you’re getting paid the same to pretend? by Xenophule (Sun 5th Jun 2022 7:21pm)
  • Hahaha I’ll let my wife know ;) by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 4:02pm)
  • Oh man I haaaaate these people who don’t wait for others to get off. Part of me feels really good when they run into my shoulder as they rush to get past me. Just wait another five seconds, guys. There’s no need to be so rude! by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 4:02pm)
  • I’ll give you people being generally rude is some city-living expectations I had a nice conversation with someone in the cinema who was checking their phone and having loud conversations during the movie; when I asked if they could be more considerate as they were being very distracting I was greeted with: “No, I paid twelve quid for this movie, I can do what I want.” People seem a lot more entitled in the last few years, though this was part of me questioning if it’s just me. On your other point: good lord I’d love a farm in the middle of nowhere! The very moment a reasonably-priced one comes on the market we will be all over that. by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 4:12pm)
  • Whilst I share your general sentiment any time I’m in public now, having that frame of mind puts you in danger of becoming Scrooge and that’s no good for society haha But I totally feel you here by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 4:27pm)
  • Why is this a thing that happens so often now‽ Have people gotten so used to doing it at home that they don’t even notice when they’re in public anymore? by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 4:34pm)
  • Not even *Mr* Scrooge Fuckin *CAPTAIN* Scrooge! If you’re going to do it, do it in *style* by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 4:34pm)
  • I’ve noticed this on the trains; I slightly touched on it in the main post: We were on the Quiet Coach on the way down and back from London a year ago and on each trip there was at least one parent turning on an iPad with some cartoon playing at max volume (why no headphones‽). Those kids will grow up thinking this behaviour is just fine and turn into the people I’ve highlighted. by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 4:45pm)
  • Gonnae be honest here: I think you’re totally right. The behaviour highlighted in my post has gotten way worse since lockdown. Has isolation worn away people’s situational awareness to the point that they don’t act any different in public than private as they do not remember social norms in public? Is it also people who were 10-12 years old when lockdown started (so they weren’t able to be on their own), then suddenly encouraged to be in public for the first time before they could learn these social skills? Just spitballing here. by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 4:54pm)
  • Not being a parent myself (and not wanting to become one), I’ve not really noticed that. It does make sense that the parent suddenly has a boosted sense of entitlement and their spawn can do no wrong (and how *dare you* suggest otherwise). Thanks for that view :) by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 4:57pm)
  • I’ve done this! Multiple times! The latest one I talked to was some girl who looked to be about 16 years old and she walked in to the cinema, saw the group of older teenagers shouting, playing music, and rapping over dinosaurs tearing the screen apart, and just walked away. I don’t blame her: **I myself** didn’t want to confront them. It’s a lose-lose situation. Or the another time I talked to someone, he said he would give them a warning. He walked in the door, looked around for two minutes whilst the people behind me had full-volume conversations, then fucked off without doing anything. I honestly wish: 1. I could count on the staff to resolve the situation 2. I didn’t have to miss part of my movie just to get someone to speak to them I do really appreciate the word of advice though :) Thank you for reaching out and trying to help my situation with your experience by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 5:03pm)
  • I’m always afraid of confronting them about this lest I get a “Who the fuck are you?” or “I’ll do what I fuckin want” And the train staff won’t do anything about it. Alcohol is banned, but they’ll check the ticket of someone tanning off a bottle and move on, no way they’ll do anything about this. by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 5:07pm)
  • ***cue intro to Idiocracy** by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 5:10pm)
  • Yeah that’s a good point. Tik Tok, Instagram, etc. are really rewarding people for documenting their activities more than the activity itself is rewarding them for experiencing it. The feedback loop of getting likes to get that release of dopamine is really strong. Thank you for that view, that makes the behaviour make more sense. by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 5:14pm)
  • If you’re in a council building, keep a log of every incident and report it to the council. Honestly, it’s going to feel like nothing is getting done but the council is obliged to take every complaint on and investigate it. If it happens enough they’ll be able to take further steps to help. It’s a glacial pace, but it’s the only way to get things done. And hey! Maybe *you* can be called a “COCK” via sharpie in your close too! by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 5:21pm)
  • We have the Cineworld black card and it’s really the only reason we go into town anymore. We are constantly weighing up whether it’s worth giving it up because of the rude people in the cinema all the time. The black card status isn’t even worth anything anymore: you get free 3D movies, but they only do 3D movies in 4DX now; we don’t care about the snack discount…and that’s really it. There’s a strong possibility we’ll just cancel it once our Covid credit is done. by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 5:29pm)
  • Haha yeah that’s a good idea :) The incidents I’ve been involved in was people taking selfies just sitting there—the screen being a front-flash (which is worse in my opinion) by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 5:32pm)
  • You are now my best friend. This is exactly why I moved to Glasgow <3 by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 5:40pm)
  • I think you can still bring it up with your local council. Our council area has a noise team; they’ve been completely useless since lockdown, but their job is to investigate noise complaints in the council area regardless of who owns the buildings. May be worth looking into it—or logging a noise complaint with the police. The police sometimes tell you to go to the council first, but hopefully those are some options for you :) by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 5:40pm)
  • Oh man that sounds horrendous! I truly feel for you. Maybe we can get a GoFundMe going for your drone project—something with a cool name like *Drones Against Dobbers* by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 5:45pm)
  • Last week there was someone in front of us (in row B, so towards the front) checking her phone at full brightness and lifting her jacket to block…the back of the phone—the part that’s not lighting up anything! You’re my hero for confronting these people—I’m always too afraid to. I shouldn’t be; I’m a grown adult. I always imagine it going really horribly wrong and I’m walking out with some kind of wound. by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 5:52pm)
  • How *dare you* try to sleep at 2am when they have music to play! You selfish bastard you. I have been given the “just wear earplugs” line as well and it’s infuriating! Your whole post is parts of my life that I didn’t fit into the main post! I truly feel your pain and I hope a quick resolution for you. by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 5:58pm)
  • Yeah, that’s a lot of good points there. I didn’t know about people being deprived of mental health services due to lockdown. I can see how this added to the pool of people whose social skills have decreased. Thanks for taking the time to list all of these—understanding the *why* of attitudes and behaviours helps me be less stressed about them (mostly the reason I made the post), so thank you for the perspective :) by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 6:05pm)
  • Oh yay! I’m happy you’re able to escape! Godspeed! by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 6:13pm)
  • Haha absolutely! Whenever a staff member comes in suddenly everyone is an angel! (Unless the staff member isn’t going to do anything, then they continue) My wife wants to know the next time you and your scary husband goes and sees a film so we can enjoy it as well ;) by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 6:10pm)
  • It was Jurassic World! by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 7:12pm)
  • > I’m convinced that absolutely nobody else in the country ever had a similar moment. > My wife is from here and tells me stories often of her own father doing very similar things. We had a neighbor that would keep us up until 3:30am every single night for just over a year, so when I say I truly feel for you and your lack of sleep due to uncaring assholes. They fucking suck. by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 7:36pm)
  • There’s a certain amount of catharsis when things go this way haha Glad your neighbor problem got taken care of (one way or another) by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 7:51pm)
  • What cinema do you go to? I may convert from Cineworld to wherever you are! by Xenophule (Tue 19th Jul 2022 7:55pm)

  • That’ll be the Cineworld on Renfrew Street :) by Xenophule (Thu 21st Jul 2022 7:10pm)
  • [Here’s some pics from when I visited in January](http://fullerfotos.co.uk/index.php?/category/659) When you get past the gates, follow the path around back of the building. If you’re skinnier than me, you might be able to squeeze into the gate they have around the staircase to the second floor. When you get around back, go to the corner by the other building—you can fit through there to get into the main building. You can also turn right here and take the stairs to the other building. Once you go in through the back hole, turn left to explore the ground floor, turn right to see the underground bit and find a staircase to the first floor. And before you go there, [watch this video](https://youtu.be/5K8d2n1j-ak) showing the seminary being functional—it makes the ruins that much more fun! by Xenophule (Wed 5th Oct 2022 9:21pm)
  • I look forward to it! by Xenophule (Sun 5th Feb 2023 5:17pm)
