  • Agree. Good pizzas but they've got an order with a dietary requirement on it wrong twice for me.. won't be going back a third time. by acky1 (Wed 18th Nov 2020 11:26pm)
  • Is an Xbox one not considered a new console? It's only been a couple of weeks. by acky1 (Wed 25th Nov 2020 7:56am)
  • Just seems strange to knock back last gen consoles to me. I guess they have enough donations where they can be a bit picky. by acky1 (Wed 25th Nov 2020 10:23am)
  • Ah, makes sense by acky1 (Wed 25th Nov 2020 12:54pm)
  • When did work begin on this? I seem to remember it a couple of years back. Over a year definitely. Kind of baffling how that can take so long. It's good it's been done though - it's a busy route so it should get a lot of use. Hopefully peope get used to it and there's less stepping out and hopefully there'll be no accidents. I'm a little worried about the McD's/KFC road cos it's a little hard to see what's coming from all directions when your in a car stopped at the cycle path - might make sense to move the pedestrian crossing there and have traffic lights. by acky1 (Sat 19th Dec 2020 4:17pm)
  • Tbf we literally make these calculations every day about so many things we do. As a society we're okay with thousands of deaths and serious injuries if we can have the convenience of driving a car. These calculations are being done by government regarding covid also, but it's not an easy task and we're still trying to work out how many deaths people are okay with. The thing is everyone's risk of infection and transmission is different. If you work from home and get your shopping delivered the risk of you having it is incredibly low. The likelihood of then transmitting to someone else if you socially distance and wear a mask for a day with family are also low. To continue the driving analogy.. some people are driving high powered sports cars whilst drunk and others are on a push bike. I think the government is doing the right thing with the tougher restrictions over Christmas, you could even argue the special treatment given to Christmas over other holidays isn't right and there shouldn't be any lowering on restrictions. by acky1 (Sun 20th Dec 2020 12:29pm)
  • Tbf they didn't know that about you when they commented. And what they commented still holds anyway. You've clearly made positive changes and are doing far better than most but that doesn't mean for this one specific topic you might not have made the most sensible decision. From an environmental perspective it doesn't make sense to switch from soy milk to dairy milk because you can't recycle the packaging. Packaging is negligible compared to the emissions, water usage and land usage of dairy versus soy milk. by acky1 (Sun 27th Dec 2020 11:49am)
  • As the other poster said, most of the soy is grown for animal feed. About three quarters globally. And the place where soy has become most damaging i.e. South America is where the animal feed is coming from. More sustainable soy can be found in Europe for example which goes into a lot of soy products. by acky1 (Sun 27th Dec 2020 4:25pm)
  • The Krankies should be able to impart some wisdom on the situation too. by acky1 (Sat 17th Apr 2021 11:38pm)
  • It's a good point. There is a legal process to gaining the right to remain and it's there so that only people who meet certain requirements can enter. You can't begrudge these guys for trying to better their lives in a more prosperous country but India is not a war torn country and if they're not in danger and they've overstayed their visa they should be deported. Do we even know the specifics of the case? Are they Muslim meaning the timing could be negatively construed due to eid? Would they be in danger if deported? I don't like the home office and their bureaucratic and obscure processes and forms but having requirements to stay in the country seems reasonable. For me this rests on the specifics of their individual cases. by acky1 (Thu 13th May 2021 9:11pm)
  • You're definitely right for legal immigration but I'd be surprised by illegal (your links are very US focused). In the UK you won't be able to pay income tax, you might be paying council tax and you'll be paying VAT on purchases but for the robust welfare system we have here you need net contributors. These guys could very well be net contributors if they aren't using any services but if they use the NHS or have kids in the school system they are almost certainly not putting in as much as they are using. I'm proud that we have the NHS, and that in Scotland we have a more progressive income tax system than the rest of the UK meaning if you earn more you pay more. Proud that our universities aren't crazy expensive too. All this requires some sort of immigration policy to bring in the immigration we need. I don't see a problem with enforcing the rules if these guys have broken them. I agree they haven't really done anything immoral but the rules are in place to protect the country and they need to be applied as fairly as possible across the board. by acky1 (Thu 13th May 2021 11:06pm)
  • Ah, I can see where you're coming from. I guess the argument for detention is to prevent them disappearing. Dunno if that is reasonable but probably would be the reason given. Definitely think protesting the conditions of detainment is a fair cause. Are you sure they were asylum seekers? Can't seem to find that information. I think if they're asking for asylum and are in real danger of returning home then they definitely shouldn't be deported. From what I can tell they're Indian so it may be fine for them to return home. I don't begrudge them flouting the rules and trying to get a better life, that's just human nature. And as I say they very well could be net contributors at this moment in time, but if it's not legitimate asylum the rules should be enforced imo at the very least for fairness to those who do attempt to go the legal route and pay all those fees for the privilege. by acky1 (Thu 13th May 2021 11:23pm)
  • Cool, makes sense. I think this case, and basically all cases like it rest on the specifics. If they're in danger then of course we shouldn't be deporting them and I'd be absolutely chuffed for them to continue living here and attempt to be prosperous. by acky1 (Thu 13th May 2021 11:31pm)
  • I would recommend Suissi. It's a bit out of the way but is probably the best food I've had in Glasgow. Family owned restaurant making Asian dishes cooked by a lovely Asian mum (Malaysian maybe?) with fresh ingredients and no MSG. Left after having a huge meal and full stomach but with absolutely no greasy after taste or bloating that you might expect from that kind of food. Brilliant experience all round. by acky1 (Fri 12th Nov 2021 6:56pm)
  • The cycling in cities like Copenhagen would be amazing to replicate. I think it's getting better though, plenty of protected cycle paths from the south side have popped up in the last few years at least. Just need more. by acky1 (Mon 27th Feb 2023 7:24pm)
  • Mono is nice and there's lots of seats out the front. If you're going in the evening you'll get decent sun coverage, it's usually not rammed full plus you're not next to a busy road so it's pretty chill. by acky1 (Fri 2nd Jun 2023 9:44pm)
  • It's a 10 minute walk too, probably as fast as the tube, and you're south of the city so easy to pop onto the 77. Edit: ah more like 20 minutes from Buchanan Bus Station, I misread it as Central. by acky1 (Thu 10th Aug 2023 9:36pm)
  • The massive boxing gloves must tip it to the ubereats lads. by acky1 (Thu 7th Sep 2023 11:42am)
  • Why is this so heavily downvoted? Everyone worried about hitting a cyclist should be extra careful around them giving them more space than the minimum required. If you see a cyclist on the road, I'd recommend immediately taking your foot off the accelerator to assess the situation then act accordingly. Usually that just means sitting in until it's safe to pass and giving lots of space, ideally the whole lane, when passing. If you do that you've little reason to worry. 20mph speed limit would help give people more time to react to others on the road and hopefully reduce the number of injuries and deaths that OP and others in here are worried about. The downside is journeys become a minute or two slower, but that seems like a worthwhile tradeoff. by acky1 (Thu 26th Oct 2023 11:11am)
  • I mean this specific cyclist sounds a bit unhinged but yeah like you say, all the more reason to slow right down when you come across him. I think you're right about the speed limit change, average journey times are more or less the same because cars don't go from 0-30 in an instant and red lights are plentiful. Apparently the average speed in Glasgow is about 7mph, so a 20mph speed limit change won't extend journey times too much once everything is taken into consideration. It's a shame people are so resistant to the change. I think status quo bias is so strong that it's difficult for people to fairly weigh up the benefits vs the drawback. Maybe there could be a compromise of timed enforcement so from 10pm to 6am or something the limit is increased to 30. by acky1 (Thu 26th Oct 2023 11:50am)
  • Or just get a push bike. The guys doing this will be renting them and paying a big premium to do so. A months rent for one would get you a second hand push bike I bet. And think of the calf gains! by acky1 (Tue 31st Oct 2023 2:08pm)
  • More money in confiscating a motor too. Missing a trick there. by acky1 (Tue 31st Oct 2023 2:10pm)
  • Could be a bunch of rowdy kids every other night during term time tbf if they allowed them in. Would anyone really be so upset at 10 young'uns coming in for 20 minutes that they'd never go to the pub again? Snowflakes. by acky1 (Tue 31st Oct 2023 3:59pm)
  • I've had a very different experience in the southside. I prefer it - easier access, picked up regularly, generally decent usage from others, plus you get the back court back to potentially do something else with without having smelly bins kicking about. Previously, the pick up was ridiculous. 3 blue bins for 8 flats collected every 2-3 weeks or something like that? Green bins not much better. Total nonsense and they were always overflowing. The new system seems to be collecting far more often. It must save the council time and money by doing it this way which ultimately means better service - it must have been a right faff for the binmen going down all the lanes for each and every bin. by acky1 (Wed 1st Nov 2023 10:51am)
  • Yeah, I'm worried it'll all fall apart once the trial ends, and they're just temporarily on their best behaviour so they don't look bad. Hopefully not. by acky1 (Wed 1st Nov 2023 11:12am)
  • Law enforcement is absolutely toothless in this country. Can't believe you can get away with a warning for that. by acky1 (Thu 9th Nov 2023 9:49am)
  • Yeah that was gonna be my shout if you're anywhere near the west end and like Asian food. One of the best meals I've ever eaten. by acky1 (Wed 15th Nov 2023 10:13am)
  • Nicely done getting on the guest list! Phoned them and looks like they're sold out. Could chance it cos you usually get a few no shows at these types of gigs but it's a bit of a trek on the off chance. Ah well, maybe next time. by acky1 (Wed 15th Nov 2023 7:47pm)
  • Scotland's population would decrease without immigration - about 50,000 a year if nobody decides to come. It's a net benefit to encourage citizens with foreign spouses to raise a family here rather than to jump ship because the rules are too strict for their circumstances. by acky1 (Wed 6th Dec 2023 12:23pm)
