  • Terrific picture - so much nicer than present image by betterman74 (Thu 17th Dec 2020 7:47pm)
  • I'm sure you're spot on. Post Victoria Glasgow was a dirty place but the b and w image is very attractive. by betterman74 (Thu 17th Dec 2020 8:33pm)

  • TOUCHÉ by betterman74 (Sun 20th Dec 2020 10:07pm)
  • I've wall mounted 2 in past few months. An absolute doddle and I'm not a joiner. I used hollow wall anchors for plasterboard. So strong, could hang my kids off them. What type of wall are you fixing it to? by betterman74 (Sun 27th Dec 2020 11:23am)
  • Sadly not their risk. Bad behaviour can affect everyone. Mixing causes transmission causes infection causes choking of the NHS. Selfish people have not helped. I too have been angered by neighbours. Wife thinks we should ignore. I have been on the verge of calling cops. I work in the NHS BTW and life is not fun at work. by betterman74 (Sun 27th Dec 2020 5:52pm)
  • Will need a decent drill. The last wall mount kit I bought was from amazon. Less than £15. It came with screws and massive raw plugs. Kit I bought before was from Curry's. It was much more expensive, came with same screws etc. It seems therefore they send you quite a lot of kit so it will fit any TV. The wall mounting units don't weigh a lot and neither do modern tvs. I say go for it. Oh a laser straight edge can be useful however the one I got from Curry's had a paper cut out of the wall mount complete with a spirit level. by betterman74 (Sun 27th Dec 2020 7:25pm)
  • https://youtu.be/HGBRIKCzIg4 One of many videos that will help. I suppose good thing about drilling into concrete is no wires and pipes.... by betterman74 (Sun 27th Dec 2020 7:34pm)
  • And old Yorkhill hospital too. Great way to sneak in and out avoiding main entrance. Happy days. by betterman74 (Wed 6th Jan 2021 1:41pm)
  • Afraid not. Looked very similar to GU pics. Could also access Queen mother's hospital too if memory serves me right. by betterman74 (Wed 6th Jan 2021 2:00pm)
  • Ran the length of Yorkhill. Entrance was side of hozzie nearest Kelvin Hall. As said I'm sure there was a run off to QMH. Full of pipes etc. Nice and warm on cold days. by betterman74 (Wed 6th Jan 2021 4:14pm)
  • Beautiful Kelvin way by betterman74 (Thu 7th Jan 2021 5:42pm)
  • I'm now closer to 50 than 40. I don't remember that facade. Anyone know when it changed? by betterman74 (Fri 8th Jan 2021 4:01pm)
  • Thanks. I know of the clock and it featured in a Billy connelly sketch (if you've seen it?). by betterman74 (Fri 8th Jan 2021 4:43pm)
  • I remember Virgin well. Bottom of Union Street? Great t-shirts and posters. by betterman74 (Fri 8th Jan 2021 4:49pm)
  • I had 2 brothers who were both into punk. One had proper multicoloured mohawk, chains, safety pins etc. As a wee boy, I was in awe. My mother had a different view...... by betterman74 (Fri 8th Jan 2021 4:51pm)
  • I suppose the shock trends never really change at heart. The colours and clothes may look a bit different but that rebel culture returns for every generation. I suppose punk hair dye and hair cut could washout and grow back. Not so much with sleeve tattoo! by betterman74 (Fri 8th Jan 2021 5:16pm)
  • I was there when my mother spotted my brothers tattoo for the first time. He was early 20s and away from home. The look on her face! When I had my ear pierced, I had my hand on left ear lobe for days before it was spotted. by betterman74 (Fri 8th Jan 2021 5:53pm)
  • Nice one my friend. I would have been 16 in 1990 but still I don't remember it. by betterman74 (Fri 8th Jan 2021 9:45pm)
  • I don't remember that either! Damn. by betterman74 (Sat 9th Jan 2021 4:54am)
  • Absolutely. Brilliant view from there. by betterman74 (Tue 12th Jan 2021 8:12am)
  • Punto! Going back a few years there mate. by betterman74 (Fri 15th Jan 2021 11:10am)
  • Very possibly but when someone says Punto, I am transported back to the 90's. by betterman74 (Fri 15th Jan 2021 12:10pm)
  • I suspect after Easter. Possible phased rtn of blended learning post Feb break until Easter. Can't have schools back and everything opening up. I suspect pashed rtn of business post easter and like before, gyms will be far down the line. We need at least another 3/12 lockdown to control r number as before. For now it's home exercise! by betterman74 (Fri 22nd Jan 2021 3:08pm)
  • I'm Scottish and on behalf of all the eejits you will have to suffer, I am sorry. by betterman74 (Mon 25th Jan 2021 8:04am)
  • Great photographs. It's a lovely spot. by betterman74 (Sun 31st Jan 2021 12:54pm)
  • Yes it looks terrific. Fantastic colours. I also enjoy the walled garden. God I'm getting old! by betterman74 (Sun 31st Jan 2021 3:11pm)
  • Indeed it was. I really should have put some directions. It was directly across from the Odeon on Renfield Street. Down some stairs then turn right into the place. Low ceilings, lots of candles and booths. Great music too. Happy days. by betterman74 (Thu 18th Feb 2021 6:21pm)
  • Yes it was, directly opposite the Odeon on Renfield St. Was centre Court a downstairs bar, opposite side and diagonally across from abc? by betterman74 (Thu 18th Feb 2021 8:06pm)
  • Ooft. That's a memorable night right there. Last time I passed the old place it looked like a kitchen or a storage area. Sad. by betterman74 (Thu 18th Feb 2021 8:10pm)
  • OK so directly across from the old Odeon on Renfield Street. Cross the road and head up towards Amber Regent restaurant. It's just past the corner and was down some stairs. If you miss it and carry on, you will reach above restaurant. by betterman74 (Thu 18th Feb 2021 8:56pm)
  • Became a nothing. I think it's a kitchen or a storage unit. I don't think it's been the bar I knew for many years. I would love to recreate it given the 25th anniversary of our first date is looming and that's where we went. by betterman74 (Thu 18th Feb 2021 9:43pm)
  • Snap. 25 years. by betterman74 (Thu 18th Feb 2021 9:54pm)
  • Oh dear mate. Sorry to hear that. by betterman74 (Thu 18th Feb 2021 9:57pm)
  • Not at all. I was pleased to hear someone else had great memories of the place. by betterman74 (Thu 18th Feb 2021 10:14pm)
  • Good music too. If I remember correctly, you went in and the bar was in front of you coming out from the left? There were booths and seats left of the bar and right and around the other side? Low ceilings and exposed beams. Not good for those of u over 6ft. by betterman74 (Thu 18th Feb 2021 10:20pm)
  • No way! Details..... by betterman74 (Fri 19th Feb 2021 3:46am)
  • I don't remember that one at all but tha ks for the info. There was a flavoured vodka bar, same side as the garage probably halfway between garage and abc. Remember it? by betterman74 (Fri 19th Feb 2021 7:33am)
  • Great info and confirms my thoughts that it was a kitchen. What a fucking waste. by betterman74 (Fri 19th Feb 2021 7:35am)
  • Yeah. Changed city from the 90s. Lots of good clubs too have gone. I wouldn't recognise it now plus late 40s now so too old for that nonsense. Still, happy days. by betterman74 (Fri 19th Feb 2021 2:54pm)
  • Ha lots of things seem a good idea when pished. by betterman74 (Fri 19th Feb 2021 2:53pm)
  • Yes! Brunswick cellars - that was it. The vodka place was called The Gate. Remember it? by betterman74 (Fri 19th Feb 2021 2:52pm)
  • Happy to help. Friday nights eh.. What year? If 96 to 97 then must have been in at same time! by betterman74 (Fri 19th Feb 2021 2:49pm)
  • It was probably only open for a year or so. They were quite popular for a while. There was one in Yorkhill then later Ashton Lane. Not really my thing. Cheers mate. by betterman74 (Fri 19th Feb 2021 2:59pm)
  • Ha. Decent philosophy there. Another one I like is better to do and say sorry afterwards than ask permission and told no. by betterman74 (Fri 19th Feb 2021 3:08pm)
  • Bar Budda!!! Another name from the past. Nostalgia tastic this chat is. by betterman74 (Fri 19th Feb 2021 3:16pm)
  • I started GU in 1994. We MUST have crossed paths at B and L. Happy days. by betterman74 (Fri 19th Feb 2021 5:15pm)
  • Yeah. Brunswick Cellars....... Was OK but I was def in the B and L corner there mate but agree, similar type of vibe. by betterman74 (Sat 20th Feb 2021 8:15pm)
  • What a character he is. by betterman74 (Sat 13th Mar 2021 6:59am)
  • GP has zero influence on time line. Trust me. I'm a GP. Patients may phone referral management or secretary of consultant to chase their referral and often told to `get your GP to write a letter'. This is a way of getting you off the phone. Only time a letter IS relevant is if changes/worsening of symptoms. by betterman74 (Sat 10th Apr 2021 5:39am)
  • Correct. Sussesive govts have repeatedly under funded and under valued the NHS. by betterman74 (Sat 10th Apr 2021 5:42am)

  • Kember and Jones on Byres road. Coffee perfection for 17 years. by betterman74 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 8:29pm)
  • Let's see if you think the same when your relative/friend/loved one can't get a hospital bed in Glasgow. Royal infirmary is on its knees right now (I'm not elaborating) and a 3 day festival with the normal 'casualties' from a festival isn't going to help that . Add to that the spread of covid and current winter viruses that will have a knock on effect in next few weeks but hey ho, who really cares after a year of 'shite' by betterman74 (Fri 10th Sep 2021 9:24pm)
  • The event should never have been allowed to happen given the state of beds, a and e and pressure on Scottish ambulance service. Scottish govt have ignored this whilst publically putting out a message about how they value the NHS. It' s not about an endless lockdown. Fact is society was opened before enough vaccinated. That's the issue. by betterman74 (Fri 10th Sep 2021 9:29pm)
  • Yeah that makes sense.....You have a choice to go or not. A quick glance will show you the hospitalisation numbers. You make the choice. If you decide to go, take the consequences. by betterman74 (Fri 10th Sep 2021 9:31pm)
  • By going along to any large gathering, indoor event, mixing etc then you are potentially spreading and thus adding to the problem. Govt have washed their hands of it. by betterman74 (Fri 10th Sep 2021 9:38pm)
  • I suspect a question of compensation cancelling a festival vrs cancelling a fireworks festival saving money. by betterman74 (Fri 10th Sep 2021 9:37pm)
  • Based on being a front line Dr and seeing the effect of covid. Age has nowt to do with it. by betterman74 (Fri 10th Sep 2021 9:40pm)
  • Yes I guess we will. Meanwhile a and e will fill up for next 3 days with folk who shouldn't be there (if event was cancelled). Govt haven't done it as I suspect would cost them a lot of money and bad press so instead let it go ahead and let the Glasgow hospital services and paramedics suck it up. As someone has said, this event going ahead but fireworks cancelled. I guarantee money (and avoidance 9f bad press) is driving that and nothing else. by betterman74 (Fri 10th Sep 2021 9:54pm)
  • Correct by betterman74 (Fri 10th Sep 2021 10:10pm)
  • Just.....wow. A lot of incorrect 'facts' and assumptions. by betterman74 (Sat 11th Sep 2021 11:58am)
  • The reality isn't fun. False reassurance because we're 'open' we're somehow all safe. Take a look at BBC Scotland today and the stories from Scottish ambulance service and positive rate in the community. That will knock on to more pressure on the NHS that cannot cope but will be expected to do just that. Had we kept restrictions in place for just a bit longer, had higher vaccine rates in the community then opening would have been far safer. by betterman74 (Sat 11th Sep 2021 12:04pm)
  • They certainly don't. by betterman74 (Sat 11th Sep 2021 12:27pm)
  • Just you wait matey by betterman74 (Sun 12th Sep 2021 7:15pm)
  • DL love new members, don't really care once on their books. I have joined and left twice. Last time we were a family of 4. 2 wishing to leave. They don't remind you on annual letters about 3 month period of notice. 2 put in period of notice with about 2 months to go and they charged a months fee once left. I was livid. I made such a fuss about it that although they didn't admit their deceit, they did start warning people when annual letters came in re fees that there was a 3 month period of notice. That and other things soured our experience. They are very short sighted and inflexible. It is a great place for kids as some brilliant classes and for adults too. Outdoor pool is fun in the summer. They used to have some activity days and quiz nights (pre-Covid)but those dried up also. They had a succession of different managers so I don't think a happy place. Join when they are doing a 3 month deal and see if you like it. Always deals to be had. by betterman74 (Wed 13th Oct 2021 3:04pm)
  • It is ****ing madness, and that's not counting COVID 19. We have the technology to conduct a conference via the web. Yes this is different to how it has always been done but if we are to survive as a species, we will have to change a lot of what we do from how we did it. The hypocrisy of having delegates etc from all over the world, using thousands of tonnes of carbon to get here and back so they can discuss saving the planet! And just because you're a world leader, doesn't give you a pass in my book. It would be wonderful if this shit storm actually resulted in major changes for the planet, but it won't. No Russia or China in attendance in believe. I drive the M8 everyday for work so not looking forward to that. Personally I think it is posturing and ego and will sadly be unlikely to help in the long run. Still a nice wee jolly for some. by betterman74 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 4:34pm)
  • Skype doesn't get you a plush hotel and an over inflated feeling of self importance. Wankers by betterman74 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 5:08pm)
  • I work in frontline NHS. Glasgow hospitals are straining under the current pressure and what happens, a fecking conference with thousands and thousands of people, some of whom will become unwell. Govt fully aware of these issues, duly noted and ignored. Don't get ill. by betterman74 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 5:28pm)
  • I'll not hold my breath re long term gains. I truly hope it helps. by betterman74 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 6:04pm)
  • That's quite a worrying statistic re Heathrow. Puts in context I suppose however still feel could be avoided using modern tech. If we want to embrace change, best start now. Plus I'm not sold on the idea nations will miss out if not IRL. There are ways and means.... by betterman74 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 6:20pm)
  • Zoom fatigue. Have you been to many conferences IRL. Place usually full of half asleep folk or those trying to leave early and still get their attendance certificates. by betterman74 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 6:37pm)
  • So you're saying that if we run out of fuel that allows nations to meet, there's no possible chance they will be able to contact, discuss and solve problems??? Oh yeah and COP 26 has just landed on Scotland without any prior warning. If this conference is about making a difference going forward then surely the big thing to do is have it using as much technology as possible and as little travelling as possible. With regards developing nations. This isn't a new thing and has been ignored/stepped over for years and years. I have no solution to that one and neither will COP 26. by betterman74 (Sun 24th Oct 2021 6:36pm)
  • Thanks mate by betterman74 (Mon 25th Oct 2021 6:57am)
  • On the whole, agreed. Make this conference the start of change. Lead by example. Minimal delegates, exploit IT. The carbon footprint from cop26 may be a drop in the ocean compared to daily Heathrow but have to start somewhere, and soon. by betterman74 (Mon 25th Oct 2021 9:38am)
  • Totally agree. It's posturing at best. Will achieve very little. Empty promises whilst the biggest polluters stay away. by betterman74 (Mon 25th Oct 2021 10:39am)

  • I'm Scottish. I wasn't upset by it. Ok we're the baddies in it but I suppose someone has to be. The main guy's accept was pretty bad in places but a decent effort and surpasses Mel Gibson's efforts. It's a bit of fun. I take the point about the black watch. No Scot wants to see one of the most famous regiments appear not to have the balls whereas a rich English lad has the courage to do what they can't or won't. I don't want to get caught up in a discussion on trench warfare (I could bleat on for days). Countless stories of heroism on both sides. Have a read about Siegfried Sassoon (aka Mad Jack). Oxbridge poet and English gentleman who was awarded the MC for bravery. Back to the film. It's a bit of fun. My 16 year old son and I went to the cinema and both loved it. We had a rare night out together and a good time so I'm a fan of this film. by betterman74 (Sun 13th Feb 2022 6:26am)

  • Was a member for a long time before finally being sickened by them (lots of reasons). They go head over heels for new members, don't seem to care about keeping current members. Buyer's market. Push hard for discounts. They used to do NHS discount for example. The clubs are usually well kept but customer service is awful. by betterman74 (Mon 8th May 2023 7:27pm)
  • I'm guessing you're looking at the South side one? It's nice. I was a member at Renfrew club. We were initially allowed access to the South side club and pool but that was steadily revoked. Tbh I'd use those gyms with no contracts etc. by betterman74 (Mon 8th May 2023 8:05pm)
  • When I was in S5, I had a mate in S6 who had a job at the soon to be opening Time Capsule. He was allowed to bring down family and friends to try the place before its grand opening. • Afraid not. It is a directive from the health board unless the practice wants to go against this.....which they won't. by betterman74 (Thu 28th Sep 2023 3:34pm)
  • Not to hand I'm afraid. I work in primary care and can confirm this is not a practice based decision. It's a HB directive. Too many 'clinics' popping up offer fast track diagnoses and treatment that are questionable. Giving someone a dx like ADHD and medicating is a huge step. Sadly this is now taking even longer via the NHS but once in the system, you're in the system. Good luck. by betterman74 (Thu 28th Sep 2023 4:06pm)
  • I am from Glasgow and was in NYC earlier this year. I drive an EV. Hardly saw a single EV in NYC. Pretty rare site compared to Glasgow. In terms of dirty streets and overflowing bins, Glasgow has its fair share and I would say no better than NYC. I think on the whole we are a lot greener over here, hence my EV comment. Far more visible recycling in Glasgow imo. by betterman74 (Fri 6th Oct 2023 4:40pm)

  • I agree. The bill reflects training/expertise/running costs etc. Not an excuse for profiteering or price fixing (alluded to earlier ). Recently paid a heating engineer £100 to fix a problem I created. His expertise solved it in minutes and turned out it was a loose wire. A lot of money if you look at it to tighten a screw. Bargain if you look at it that his expertise diagnosed and fixed a problem and didn't cost me thousands. by betterman74 (Wed 25th Oct 2023 8:53am)
  • 100 quid to replace! And it's an old unit so not easy to source. If not able to fix then probably best getting a new system. by betterman74 (Mon 30th Oct 2023 7:53am)

  • Thanks mate. The receiver unit has a button so I can get the heating on. Do you think if I have to get an identical replacement thermostat, it will 'talk' to the receiver ok? It's a Danfoss tp5000si. by betterman74 (Mon 30th Oct 2023 8:45am)
  • You are a star. I thought it would need pairing but couldn't find instructions. Outstanding. Have a good day and thanks. by betterman74 (Mon 30th Oct 2023 8:53am)

  • Thanks buddy. Got it fixed for a tenner and it's working fine. I'd like to put a new modern system in with an app. I wonder if it's easy enough to swap over the receiver or do I need an engineer to do it properly?? by betterman74 (Mon 30th Oct 2023 1:13pm)
  • To all the fantastic people who replied....thank you. Now repaired and working again. Take a bow you lot. Cheers by betterman74 (Mon 30th Oct 2023 1:11pm)
  • Hi Jason. Just to say thanks for the offer. What a kind thing to do. A little local TV repair shop did it for me this am and all working. I hope some good karma comes your way. BW by betterman74 (Mon 30th Oct 2023 1:10pm)
  • Cheers. I put in a new thermostat for hot water (separate thermostats for the radiators and water tank). I had the receiver off the wall the same time as the new thermostat so familiar with the wiring. Only concern is I might muck up that thermostat when putting in a new receiver. by betterman74 (Mon 30th Oct 2023 4:13pm)
  • Cheers. Got it sorted for a tenner. Would like to upgrade one day soon. by betterman74 (Mon 30th Oct 2023 7:08pm)
