  • £100 million per ferry is just ridiculous. Quite why the dual-fuel LNG option was chosen is beyond me. If they wanted to go down the hybrid fuel route then there is much cheaper proven technology in hybrid battery tech by capnbullseye (Thu 19th Dec 2019 12:10am)
  • Both Remontowa and Flensburger were apparently consulted and both refused to get involved. Mostly due to the fact that the vessels have effectively been left to right outside and will need a complete electrical and mechanical overhaul. Best thing to do would be scrap them and start again by capnbullseye (Thu 19th Dec 2019 9:32pm)
  • To bunker LNG these ferries would require either a LNG bunker lorry, local liquefaction plant or a LNG bunker barge, none of which are readily available now in Scotland. Large scale hybrid battery use is becoming more common in the marine industry, particularly with short service ferries. Battery power is not intended to replace MGO but to complement it and reduce load on the generators. Most Hybrid battery systems these days are paired with a DC grid which also dramatically reduces power consumption and emissions. Scotland wasn't ready for LNG ferries 3 years ago when these were scheduled to be delivered and it still isn't ready now by capnbullseye (Thu 19th Dec 2019 9:57pm)

  • No questionaire was handed out. Temperature monitoring is the first step. If you have a high temp then they take you to one side and carry out further tests. All it takes is one or two staff with IR temp.guns. in Singapore where I have just come from every library, government office, mall, large office building was carrying this out. It doesn't take much and is the frontline in stopping potentially infected people from entering the country. • Don't really know where to start with your massively un-informed statement, but I'll start here... 1. New IMO regulations on SOx and NOx emissions means ALL vessels in European waters must run on MGO (or diesel as it's otherwise known) 2. Baws. You're just making shit up here. Nearest thing that I think you might mean are carbon scrubbers which older vessels that can't run dual-fuel as above have installed to 'clean' out their emissions. Like a catalytic converter on a car. 3. The three vessels, Azamara Quest, Journey & Pursuit have a total crew complement of approx. 1000. Most of whom would be onboard to look after passengers. With out passengers they probably have a safe-manning minimum of 40-60. 4. There are approximately 250,000 seafarers trapped on vessels around the world at the minute unable to get home to loved ones due to the ongoing pandemic. Most will have been trapped on their vessels since March, some for many motnhs before that. The unlucky ones are stuck on their ships with minimal contact with the outside world and intermittent food supplies. Pretty much everything you said is laughable and reading it again makes me think you must be about 12-15? In which case I'm sorry for swearing by capnbullseye (Wed 24th Jun 2020 7:08pm)
  • Also easier to get crew home from the UK by capnbullseye (Wed 24th Jun 2020 9:03pm)
  • I'm in the merchant navy too, also thankfully not stuck on board but I am unable to return home, as thousands of other are, due to quarantine rules. And I'm with you on mega cruise ships, however it really grips my shit when folk just blurt out what they think they know, rather than the actual facts. Thanks for explaining the catalytic thing, I was just trying to give a basic comparison in layman's terms. Cruise ships, like tankers and containerships are now built on the principles of economy of scale and while this may be disagreeable to many, they are one of the few remaining employers of British cadets and junior officers so in that respect I'm alright with them. by capnbullseye (Thu 25th Jun 2020 8:00am)

  • No it won't. There's no correlation between outdoor gatherings and spikes in infections. And if we are truly being data driven about opening things up then there's no reason to use these gatherings as an excuse to extend lockdown. by capnbullseye (Sun 7th Mar 2021 7:41pm)

  • I wish it was the same for the rental market! my 2-bed flat has been on the market for 6 weeks now with no interest. (at the same price the last tenant was paying for the previous 3 years) I'm hoping when restrictions ease things will pick up... by capnbullseye (Sun 28th Mar 2021 9:10pm)
  • is that the amount you've found? When we bought in November I found most places were asking for about 5% over the home report and going for the same again. We only paid about 10% over asking price. Maybe we got lucky. by capnbullseye (Sun 28th Mar 2021 9:15pm)
  • my tenement is 130 years old with none of those issues. my flat was completely refurbished (wiring, plumbing, floor joists, walls plastered etc) by the previous owner. As already mentioned I love the bay window, high ceilings and (most) of my neighbours. if you wouldn't live in a tenement or a new build you're kind of limiting your options in Glasgow by capnbullseye (Sun 28th Mar 2021 10:03pm)

  • Looking at it from the other side, I have rented out my flat in St.George's cross for the last 10 years and it was only when I went through an agency that I got decent tenants. Personally I haven't had any issues with Purple Bricks by capnbullseye (Tue 18th May 2021 10:13am)
  • Spam Valley! I went to school out that way and still have friends who live there. That is generally considered one of the more genteel neighbourhoods around Glasgow (technically East Dunbarton)Sorry to hear about your experiences but you must have just got unlucky with your immediate neighbourhood and neighbours. I've lived in Springburn, Maryhill and Cessnock and only Springburn was rough as...my current neighbours are a real mix of weegies, eastern europeans and indian/bangladeshi and I have never had a more friendly bunch. • Careful! I got a 30day ban from an over-zealous mod for asking this same question about 6 weeks ago! by capnbullseye (Fri 4th Jun 2021 10:46am)
  • As already stated it is basically the norm in tenements/flats and you're better to have them as they cover buildings insurance and (basic) maintenance. So in relation to your question about roof damage then the buildings insurance provided by the factor should cover it. Some factors are better than others, Hacking and Paterson have a particularly bad reputation as doing hee-haw and just taking your money. by capnbullseye (Fri 4th Jun 2021 6:23pm)
