  • I changed my career at 30 from retail manager to barber. In between I took 6 months off working in bars and restaurants, going from being the boss for 12 years to being a part timer was honestly one of the best things I ever did...fuck the salary it only brought me misery (although I often wonder what exactly I used to spend £2k a month on). My advice is just fucking go for it, you have £8k in savings which is loads. Good luck by deadkestrel (Mon 6th Jan 2020 10:27am)

This is very frustrating. by deadkestrel (Wed 25th Mar 2020 4:58pm)
  • Thanks for this, this is my first year being self employed and I was waiting until next month to submit my returns as as far as I can tell they are still doing last year (2018-2019) when I was employed by somebody. • Has anybody got any advice on how to get in contact with the council to tell them we can't pay the council tax due to me and my wife being unable to work? The website for change in circumstances is down and they have also taken down the phone line...? Is it worth just cancelling the direct debit? Been in the queue for universal credit also for 2 days now to validate my identity....this is absolute chaos. I'm self employed and there is funding being announced today but I genuinely feel it's going to be impossible to get. by deadkestrel (Thu 26th Mar 2020 10:18am)

  • So my worst fears came true yesterday regarding the self employed deal. I became self employed last July so therefore haven't submitted a tax return as this current tax year I was PAYE. In touch with an accountant and maybe they can shed more light if I can claim. Bit annoying that I've paid tax all my life and made the decision to be self employed which has well and truly fucked me. We shall see, still trying to get through to universal credit after 4 days on the phone. Just can't wait to go out to the pub again and socialise by deadkestrel (Fri 27th Mar 2020 8:51am)
  • Yeah I've been putting pretty much all my money away as I didn't know what to expect with the tax bill come April and didn't want to be caught out so I'm fine for cash for time being which is good. The amount of people walking about glasgow with fresh skin fades is sickening. by deadkestrel (Mon 11th May 2020 12:54pm)

  • I cycle a lot and sometimes it's honestly safer to be on the pavement. If I do have to switch to pavement I move slow and basically don't be a cunt. The roads are littered with potholes which would do some fucking damage if you fell off. by deadkestrel (Tue 12th May 2020 8:07pm)
  • I don't think you get what I'm saying. If I'm on the pavement I'm going walking pace and not asking anybody to move and will switch to road once I get past potholes or dangerous lanes. I totally get there are people who go fast on the pavements who expect everybody to move out of the way and I agree with you is shite behaviour. Some of the roads in Glasgow are impossible to cycle on without having to be in the middle of the road and therefore blocking traffic. I'm not scared of cycling I'm scared of cars who don't give a shit knocking me over. by deadkestrel (Tue 12th May 2020 11:00pm)

Everywhere I've been during lockdown has been busy and for the most part I'd say 99% of people are following social distancing measures. There are always going to be people who aren't following the rules. https://twitter.com/mcafee77/status/1262083029918457857?s=20 This is basically you right now. by deadkestrel (Wed 20th May 2020 5:47pm)

  • Me and the wife went down to the Clyde along hydro for a nice walk in the sun and we had to get off the path as it was honestly a free for all of cyclists, runners and people. I don't mind people being out as they are just doing what we were but honestly some people have no grasp on what's going on and manners. I don't mind cyclists and joggers as I am one of them but its the ones who honestly don't read the path in front of them and just try and squeeze in an inch space to get past. Idiots man, all you need to do is wait a minute for the path to be clear then move on. • Paesano actually bought their own bin and places it at the bottom of the gates on Gibson street. They recognised their boxes were a problem and attempted to fix it unlike GCC who seemingly do fuck all every year. I live just next to the park and I pay a lot of council tax for this shite. Really hate Glasgow sometimes. by deadkestrel (Mon 22nd Jun 2020 4:11pm)
  • I genuinely don't understand why younger people can't just sit down and relax when they drink on the park, why so they have to run about shouting at the top of their lungs and why are 14-17 year old girls now basically wearing underwear when they are out, why do they all have their arse cheeks out. Fucking bizarre behaviour. by deadkestrel (Fri 26th Jun 2020 11:11am)
  • From what I've read they've housed the majority of the homeless and junkie population in the hotels around town. I don't like to say it or even think it but with that comes an increase in crime I guess? • I'm a barber in the west end. This restyle fee sounds weird as it'll only be 3 months growth? All it'll need is a high guard on a clipper to get the bulk off and get it back to a desirable length which will take all of 5 minutes. My place is only charging £1 for a mask as we feel it's kinda ridiculous to place the extra costs on the customers during this. We are all skint and we've all had a difficult time so why should you pay more? We charge £20 already for a cut so we aren't losing out on that much, looking at my books it's the completely opposite as we are full until a week Monday. If you feel the prices are too much or they are taking the piss you should message them and tell them you aren't happy to pay, most people should accommodate. I've seen some absolutely ridiculous charges for PPE (I saw a hairdressers asking for £25 extra on the cut which is obscene) by deadkestrel (Tue 14th Jul 2020 11:32am)

  • Dismissing new and different things happens a lot on here too when a new restaurant/bar/event is discussed. I'm English with a Glaswegian mother and also my wife is Glaswegian and lived here for 6 years. I've definitely noticed this thing in Glasgow where some people really take pride in being working class and anybody who strives to break out of the class is almost defecting from being a true glaswegian and their roots. I find it really bizarre as surely everybody just wants to make the best of their life any way they can. by deadkestrel (Fri 31st Jul 2020 5:58am)

  • You do realise it was set up to keep restaurants in business? They won't be easily able to bend the rules to do takeaways as this would lead to millions around the UK just declaring fake meals and claiming back millions of pounds from the government. If there is a restaurant actually trying to do this then fuck them so much. by deadkestrel (Fri 7th Aug 2020 6:00am)
  • https://www.facebook.com/1542742226037534/posts/2563952590583154/?d=n Ramen dayo doing 20% off their takeaway right now. I imagine a few other places will follow suit soon when the mass redundancies start. by deadkestrel (Fri 7th Aug 2020 8:12am)
  • I think there will be mass redundancies in every industry when the furlough ends so there won't be as many people eating out. Whilst I hope I am wrong I just can't shake the fear I have that the new 6 months are going to be heavy shite for everybody. I already have around 5 friends who been made redundant throughout the UK. by deadkestrel (Fri 7th Aug 2020 8:25am)
  • Gonna need a breakdown of the bill cause this doesn't seem too bad for 9 people's food? That's £6.67 per head? It is annoying that this is blocked though, I mean it would make far too much sense to have it open wouldn't it? Would be so good to have bars and restaurants along the Clyde but alas Glasgow CC strike again. • I'm a self employed barber and am just in shock that I have to close yet again after bending over backwards doing everything I can for COVID procedures. Any cunt that won't wear a mask in a supermarket for 15 mins needs to try wearing on in a hot shop for a 10 hour shift. Ack, it is what it is...hopefully we get a self employed grant again as that saved my bacon last time as I refuse to do home haircuts. by deadkestrel (Tue 17th Nov 2020 4:50pm)

  • Is anybody aware if the Scottish government are going to release another newly self employed grant? I am only a year being into self employed and dont qualify for the self employed grant the UK gov has released yesterday. I got a grant in the first lockdown which really helped with the bills and mortgage. Not being able to earn again it would be nice if we got some kind of support again. by deadkestrel (Tue 1st Dec 2020 10:50am)

  • No, it's always been 6pm sorry. My business had to close in tier 4 and we made sure straight after the announcement to find out when it ended. • I'm in west end just next to KG park and it seems some bins have finally been emptied whilst loads of others have not. The bottle bin lat the east end entrance was overflowing and rather than emptying the entire bin they just took the bottles that were on the floor around the bin. KG park bins are all overflowing with coffee cups (thats another story) If you walk by all the back streets around the west end all the bins also overflowing. I've never seen anything like this before. by deadkestrel (Sun 24th Jan 2021 10:31pm)

  • It's not just the build quality it's living in a soulless estate with nothing around you except a Tesco megastore. I'm sure for loads of people it's ideal but it's my idea of hell. I spent the last part of my childhood in one in England and it was awful. by deadkestrel (Thu 28th Jan 2021 6:26pm)
  • Yeah perhaps I was being a little vague, I meant the huge out of town estates, that's generally what I think of when somebody says new build. by deadkestrel (Fri 29th Jan 2021 2:02pm)
  • I lived in one which was just about 200 houses and nothing else, I was too young to drive so I had to walk at least 30 mins to the nearest train station. I was a little harsh with my original post. by deadkestrel (Fri 29th Jan 2021 2:04pm)
  • I'm just near KG park and our bins are terrible, what's it like for those of you who live further out in houses rather than tenements/new build flats. Are you bins getting collected regularly? Surely we can't go on with the city looking this shit, what are they gonna do in November when we have the climate change meeting? by deadkestrel (Sun 31st Jan 2021 10:35am)
  • Now that Topman has been sold thats another huge empty building in Glasgow city centre. If anybody on here worked there im sorry and I hope you are OK. The city is going to be a ghost town isn't it once this is all over. by deadkestrel (Mon 1st Feb 2021 12:30pm)
  • For sure, I worked in clothing retail for 12 years and left 3 years ago cause it was just getting ridiculous trying to keep up with the targets they were giving us with half the staff. • I can't stress this enough but only get it from a shelter or charity such as Cat's Protection. I would heavy heavy heavy recommend you dont go to some gimp on Gumtree charging you £250 in cash for a kitten with absolutely no jabs or information about where it's come from. We got two kittens in Feb last year from cats protection, the process was easy, you apply for the kittens then an agent comes to your house to see if its suitable for the kitten to be around. Once they say its cool you get the kittens then its months of being woken up at 4am, enjoy! by deadkestrel (Sat 6th Feb 2021 5:50pm)

I went out myself at 9am this morning and the big hill again was littered with broken plastic, I picked up around 9 bits and put them in the bin. How fucking hard is it to do that? It really frustrates me when you get w group of 4 people walking towards you in a line and they make absolutely zero effort to make a gap for you to walk past forcing you into the road. I've lived here for 6 years now and the city centre is easily the worst out of the 5 other uk cities I've lived. Great architecture right enough but literally fuck all else there. It's depressing when you see photos on lost Glasgow of the city in the 50s/60s as it look as absolutely amazing by deadkestrel (Tue 16th Feb 2021 9:18am)
  • I honestly don't get what the fuck GCC are even doing these days, sure the big bosses are enjoying their 5 figure salaries when they can't even do simple things like empty a bin or fix a pothole in a street. • DELETED Not a bad wage there for effectively doing nothing over the last 11 months. It just find it staggering that you can't even ring up to sort your council tax as there aren't people in the office. I have a mate who's dad works for the council and he said even if you have the slightest cough you get two weeks off 'isolation' full pay and literally everybody is doing it across the council. They aren't stupid are they these folk by deadkestrel (Wed 24th Feb 2021 7:57am)

  • This route is ok during the week but completely avoid at the weekend. If you head further west from Patrick you're being good and is generally quiet, Victoria park is decent. Complete first world problem but running through the west end sometimes during the pandemic is carnage, there's people everywhere and nobody wants to move out of the way for each other. by deadkestrel (Sun 28th Feb 2021 7:25pm)

  • Has anybody had the Mother India cook at home stuff recently? It was mine and the wife's go to curry as we liked the fact you can pick it up and cook at your own leisure. We had one last night and the packaging has changed to this vacuum sealed ready meal stuff and Im sorry to say it was absolutely awful. Had zero flavour and almost as if its not cooking in house anymore? Had better tasting Lidl ready meals. Gutted, nothing worse than a shite takeaway. by deadkestrel (Fri 5th Mar 2021 9:02am)
  • They are usually amazing, but like I said the packaging has all changed and it just looks like its been cooked in a factory and put into a packet now. Used to work just near it so would drop in past week and pick up some curries to cook at home was really good. I dont think we'll be trying again for a while after last nights. It's a shame because the sit down restaurant is unreal. Back to the curry pot on Dumbarton road next time for us. by deadkestrel (Fri 5th Mar 2021 11:20am)
  • Well it's usually the a selection of the same curries they have in the restaurant put in Tupperware which you simply heat up at home. It's actually insane how little there is to do along the waterfront compared to most cities that have a river through it. Bristol is a great example of how to do it well. Loads of people in Glasgow don't have gardens so parks are the places they go when they want to relax, saw they are installing new cctv cameras too on the big hill. I'm not having a few young folk ruin the park for everybody else. by deadkestrel (Thu 1st Apr 2021 6:42pm)

Yeah some of them are violent but so are adults on a Saturday night round Merchant City. Just wish they would behave a bit better when out and basically not cause all the shit they are currently causing, then I think the larger population would respect them a bit more. I would absolutely hate being 13 years old right now to be honest. by deadkestrel (Sun 25th Apr 2021 8:36am)

  • I mean it isn't a 'shitey comparison' whatever happens today at George square it's going to be a shitstorm of reactions compared to this weeks events with the two guys. On paper it's still two large gatherings of people without masks on. I fully 100% support the incident in pollokshields so I don't think that allows me to criticise other large gatherings regardless of what they are for. by deadkestrel (Sat 15th May 2021 7:25am)

  • I'm a runner and live in west end and it can be a nightmare sometimes with people everywhere, one thing I'll never do is run past somebody with hardly any space between us. There is nothing worse then you're walking and a runner/cyclist comes behind you at full speed without letting you know. I tend to put my keys in my pocket so people can hear me, if that doesn't work I'll scuff my shoes against the floor so people are aware im behind them. If they don't hear me I just wait until I have space to pass by. The kelvin walkway used to be my fav spot but it's carnage down there these days. by deadkestrel (Tue 25th May 2021 9:47am)

My wife and I are so very upset that he is missing as he comes from a very loving home with a sister cat who is also missing him. Please if you have seen him can you please let me know. by deadkestrel (Mon 31st May 2021 10:49am)

  • Ah perfect just took a walk down as I live on the next street along no sign of him I'm afraid by deadkestrel (Mon 31st May 2021 1:33pm)
  • Im holding onto the thought now of somebody taking him to vets and getting his microchip scanned. He still hasn't showed up and I'm honestly devastated. His sister cat is going crazy calling for him which is making it so much worse by deadkestrel (Tue 1st Jun 2021 8:30am)
  • Cheers man I just took a drive over and couldn't see him. If you see him again could you possibly take a picture by deadkestrel (Tue 1st Jun 2021 8:29am)
  • It's what keeps going through my mind that somebody saw him and took him home. He's an insanely beautiful cat and is so friendly. We only just started letting them go outside for the last 2 months and he always came back. Kicking myself now for letting them go outside, our other cat went missing too on Saturday but we found her a couple of streets along. by deadkestrel (Tue 1st Jun 2021 9:12am)
  • Guys we found him!!! He was in an office on the street behind us and was locked in there since Friday due to the bank holiday. Fucking hell I am so relieved. Thanks for all your help by deadkestrel (Tue 1st Jun 2021 9:40am)
  • The sister cat is actually acting a bit strange and is growling at him and hiding under the bed. Not sure if it's because he's been away for more than a couple of days. Sure they'll be back to spooning soon enough by deadkestrel (Tue 1st Jun 2021 11:45am)
  • poor little fucker was trapped in there best part of 5 days, he's a little skinnier and shaken but other than that he seems fine. by deadkestrel (Tue 1st Jun 2021 12:40pm)
  • I'm a self employed barber in west end. Some clients tip some dont, I really dont expect it but its always nice to get something extra. It definitely helped me after only working 3 out of the last 12 months. I often pay it forward when I get a taxi or a meal in a restaurant. After my chair rental, equipment costs and taxes you come out with very little after a £20 haircut despite what you may think we earn. If you don't tip your stylist its really not a problem, dont think too hard on it. by deadkestrel (Tue 1st Jun 2021 4:20pm)
  • No problems at all happy to help. Just you do you really. There are no rules as far as I can see by deadkestrel (Tue 1st Jun 2021 6:59pm)
  • Just wanna say thanks for all the comments on my missing cat post the other day there. We found him trapped in an office behind our flat over the bank holiday weekend thank god we put a flyer through their door. Now we have the task of getting his sister to like him again as she's not liking his scent....they should be fine in a couple of days by deadkestrel (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 8:04am)

  • Whilst it is nice to receive good service you really can't expect some 21 year old earning fuck all 'to go out of their way' to give you amazing service. I would expect them to do the basics of their job and anything else is a bonus. If youve ever worked in the industry you'd know how hard it is to deal with customers all day especially in a cheaper restaurant where you're going to get absolute idiots in all day every day. by deadkestrel (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 8:14am)

Bit difficult to get going as you need to keep it under constant flame for about 30/40 mins but well worth it. Once its lit it stays for hot for hours and is even great to keep you warm in the evening once it gets a bit colder. https://www.thebasic.london/products/white-charcoal-binchotan-10kg?variant=31908844208190&currency=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic by deadkestrel (Tue 3rd Aug 2021 11:07am)

  • I used to work in high street tailoring, I may be wrong but it looks like Forbes is just made to measure which means they use an outside company to make the suits. All they do is fill in the measurements they take from you and send it off via a template form. They always seem to measure the suits far too small for their clients too. It wouldn't be my go to if I'm being honest but there's not exactly a huge amount of choice in Glasgow at the moment. I would definitely recommend this guy if you want a good suit made. https://instagram.com/hunter_kingsley_tailoring?utm_medium=copy_link by deadkestrel (Sun 23rd Jan 2022 7:12am)

  • Would like to see more green space like on the plot of land where Victoria's was. That would be a great little park area, probably knock down the old bhs building too and make that into a park/food truck area. Would also give a lot of students the opportunity to own their own little shop along the street wether it be a clothing boutique, cafe or art space. Give them super low rates and rents for 5 years to get the streets buzzing and make it a real destination. by deadkestrel (Fri 28th Jan 2022 7:34am)

  • DELETED No offence or disrespect but you are paying for somebodies time, skills and equipment use when getting a haircut or any other service like it. I'm a barber and there is no such thing as a 'simple trim' like most people think. The cut needs to have a shape and be even and blended in, this alone takes time to do properly. It's not just a simple case of cutting a tiny bit off. You mentioned your hair is curly which again requires time to get correct. Then you have the styling from wet which for a standard ladies cut takes a good amount of time to do well. We don't charge for amount taken off. Also the rents we pay for our shops atm are absolutely insane by greedy landlords unfortunately this needs to be factored into the cost of the service. by deadkestrel (Wed 2nd Feb 2022 5:56pm)

That way you build antibodies along with your vaccines which I assumed you have taken. I had it December 2020 and it floored me and would wish it on my worst enemy but everybody who’s had it since omicron has said they didn’t even notice it. I have to wear a mask all day in work and I’m in two minds wether or not I’ll be ditching it, not sure I can take another summer of wearing it 10 hours a day to be honest but I obviously get the reasons behind them being in place. • Flew back to Glasgow last night and arrived at 11pm. Got outside to get taxi home to find zero taxis and a queue of about 75 people all waiting for one. I looked at Uber and they were quoting me £35 to get back to finnieston which is literally a 15 minute drive. Utter carnage. by deadkestrel (Mon 4th Jul 2022 11:27am)
  • Felt sorry for the people visiting the city in that queue. The steward at the taxi stop just basically said they’re aren’t any taxis you’ll be better ringing a local paisley firm. by deadkestrel (Mon 4th Jul 2022 2:16pm)
  • Had to call my wife who was in bed at the time to come pick me up. I tired Uber but it wouldn’t pick any up for me. by deadkestrel (Mon 4th Jul 2022 8:37pm)
  • I’ve flown twice and it’s fine, it just takes a bit longer to check your bag in if you are doing that. Each time I’ve travelled light so sailed through security. The pubs inside were very busy when I flew last Thursday. Getting back home on Sunday night though was a complete nightmare. There were zero taxis in the rank and about 70 people waiting for them. Uber quoting me £35 for 15 minutes drive. by deadkestrel (Wed 6th Jul 2022 10:17am)
  • You say that but I went the first year for Radiohead and that crowd was fucking horrible, loads of people trying to start fights and push by you even though I was at the front of the barrier. I get big crowds are often stressful and people need to move about but this was so aggro. Never again. by deadkestrel (Wed 6th Jul 2022 10:26am)

  • Im a driver and a cyclist and drivers are way worse and get away with so much shit. The amount of times you look in your rear view mirror and the person behind you is on their phone whilst driving is insane. Cars speeding through the last second of an amber light just to make the junction only to be stuck in the tail end of the traffic of the next set of lights is also insane, see Charing Cross for the best example of this. by deadkestrel (Wed 13th Jul 2022 10:13am)

  • I am really not a fan of this new trend of card machines asking for a tip at bars now when ordering at the bar. Was at the locale last night and got one drink and the machine asked me if I wanted to tip…wtf. Have seen it in a few other bars in Glasgow recently too. Im not anti tipping at all and tip regularly when eating out etc but one pouring me one drink is ridiculous by deadkestrel (Sun 31st Jul 2022 8:10am)
  • I don’t have an issue with tipping if I’ve been at a bar and I’m drinking on a tab. Being asked to tip after every drink is nonsense. by deadkestrel (Sun 31st Jul 2022 11:02am)

  • You shouldn’t have made a throwaway account, you should be proud to be making that money you have obviously worked for it and have a good job. by deadkestrel (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 8:07pm)
  • I went from retail to barbering. I’m now self employed and fully booked most days, money is great and stress is low. Highly recommend taking it up, although it’s definitely not easy and the first few years are tough trying to build a clientele. I started off the first few years working employed at a barber shop earning a wage then was able to break away once I got my clients in. Reading your original post reminded me so much of myself when I was stuck on the same wage and constantly skint whilst all my mates were on holidays and buying stuff all the time. by deadkestrel (Thu 4th Aug 2022 7:06am)
  • It’s pretty mad it seems they have made no effort in sound dampening, most established outside venues are surrounded by trees to help with the noise travelling. This place is in a bit open wasteland isn’t it? by deadkestrel (Sun 7th Aug 2022 9:16am)

All the server did was hand me a sandwich out of the glass display cabinet directly in front of her, when I went to pay with card it asked me do i want to add a tip, I pressed no and she looked absolutely furious at me. All you have done is literally hand me a bottle of drink and a sandwich gtf by deadkestrel (Thu 26th Jan 2023 8:56am)
  • Really hate a lot of places now use the dojo card machines and basically force you to either leave a tip or press no when paying with card. • People really need to get this using a car for literally every journey mentality out of their heads, the city will be fine without cars there are other ways of getting in and out of the city. Anybody with a pair of eyes can see how fucked the M8 is during rush hour, surprised the Kingston bridge hasn't collapsed under the weight of the cars. I know the public transport is also not great atm but we really need to change our mentality, myself included in that. The amount of times ive been sat in traffic and pretty much every car just has one person using it is insane. by deadkestrel (Tue 4th Apr 2023 7:49pm)
  • I would say 10pm is fair game, that are probably doing the works after the finish their job? by deadkestrel (Tue 4th Apr 2023 7:51pm)
  • Yes I get that, and when the entire population of Glasgow thinks that way this is where the problem lies. Everywhere you attempt to drive in and around Glasgow you are either met with traffic, road works (roads damaged due to insane number of cars using them). We also have the issue now of parking and the streets not having enough space for all the cars which is why we are seeing cunts park on pavements and across crossings etc. Public transport must be improved ten fold to make any sort of change happen, its only going to get worse. I remember growing up in the 90s and most streets would have a few cars parked, where do kids even play curby these days? by deadkestrel (Tue 4th Apr 2023 8:18pm)
  • Dont you have a blue badge which basically lets you use the car in and around the city centre and avoids any rules set in place for non blue badge holders? I dont have a problem with that at all? by deadkestrel (Tue 4th Apr 2023 8:23pm)
  • Sorry but you mentioned you are disabled so this will entitle you to a blue badge so you can use a car to aid you in and around the city? by deadkestrel (Tue 4th Apr 2023 9:13pm)
  • I also don’t think the city centre is in decline at all, have you been recently? It’s mobbed, even more so at the weekends. There is a myth of the city centre dying because a few big chain stores closed down after covid. by deadkestrel (Tue 4th Apr 2023 9:12pm)
  • No I don’t because I am not disabled, you said you were so I asked the question? Not sure why you’re being defensive on this. by deadkestrel (Tue 4th Apr 2023 9:52pm)
  • Of course, not saying it is but it is a constant rhetoric on here that the city centre is some sort of zombie apocalypse wasteland which really couldn't be further from the truth. It is also worth saying if you think the city centre is in decline go in and shop and make it better! Lots of small businesses in city centre doing things that need support. by deadkestrel (Wed 5th Apr 2023 10:03am)
