  • A while ago some manky prick blocked us in wi his motor on Bardowie St behind Saracen Cross so he could nip across for a wee al fresco pint at the Saracen Bar. Wouldnae move for us until he'd finished it. Always see characters like that cutting about there, grim as fuck. by fenrisulfr94 (Thu 25th Jul 2019 11:52am)
  • Bit late to this sorry. I'm at Strathclyde doing my PhD, and I done my masters here as well in the engineering department, albeit in EEE. I done some of the civil eng classes during the masters and I really enjoyed them - they had a big practical focus and the staff were dead nice. I'd recommend Strathclyde because I know the engineering faculty is solid and has hunners of industrial links which they encourage you to make use of - a lot of the software houses and engineering companies in Glasgow are heavily populated with Strathclyde graduates, though I can't attest to the quality of Glasgow's department. The most important thing is you're doing the course which actually appeals to you most in terms of content, that's ultimately what matters. No point doing a course you like the sound of less because the uni is fancier - the name won't matter that much once you've got experience. by fenrisulfr94 (Wed 31st Jul 2019 3:02pm)
  • It's French for "I will maintain", likely linked to the Dutch House of Orange, which is famously Protestant. Makes sense when the highest grave in the Necropolis belongs to John Knox. by fenrisulfr94 (Wed 7th Aug 2019 12:56pm)
  • I'm waiting to be assessed for (very probable) autism. This is something I fucking hate about the city centre - I've literally been chased and cornered against walls by wallopers trying to get me to take my headphones off so they can harass me for something. It's at the point now I have planned routes through the city centre to minimise time spent on the worst streets for it and I'm actually beyond sick of it. It's only gotten worse over the years, and it's driven me to do a lot of shopping online. by fenrisulfr94 (Thu 5th Sep 2019 7:54pm)
  • AWRYT BIG CHAP GOT TWO MINUTES?! by fenrisulfr94 (Thu 5th Sep 2019 8:54pm)
  • Aye, haranguing me really isn't going to persuade me to do anything other than try and get away as quickly as possible. I literally just want to walk through the town without getting subjected to a pure assault course. At the very least ban public solicitations of any kind during certain hours, or restrict access to the busiest streets, or something. Dunno what the answer is but the way it is right now isnae it. by fenrisulfr94 (Thu 5th Sep 2019 10:11pm)
  • I think this is a good idea. Just an outright ban on the harassment and set up a stall instead - I'll come over if I'm interested. It would probably do them good as I rarely see anyone stop for them otherwise. by fenrisulfr94 (Fri 6th Sep 2019 10:03am)
  • I went to Picnic on Ingram Street the other week and it was really nice by fenrisulfr94 (Thu 12th Sep 2019 10:14am)
  • I was in Morrison's in Partick earlier and some folk were standing having a blether and blocking entry to aisles. There's only so much room and entry was being managed by security but some folk obviously just don't give a fuck. There were plenty of auld yins in there as well just trying to get past. by fenrisulfr94 (Sat 28th Mar 2020 6:53pm)

  • Taylor Wimpey were on the news in fairly recent memory - last year I think - for using really shite (like 80% sand) mortar which literally couldnae support the buildings long-term. Showed you one owner running their finger along the mortar and it came out like wet beach sand. Outright no safe for habitation. Afterwards they reportedly tried to give payouts to the owners but tried to be sleekit and make them sign NDAs to stop it getting out - refusing the NDA meant the settlement was rescinded. Worth keeping in mind. by fenrisulfr94 (Wed 10th Jun 2020 2:18pm)
  • I definitely feel like working from home makes my work fit around my life, instead of the other way about. No longer do I feel the slog. It can be distracting sometimes, sure, but overall I feel like my life is a lot less hectic and I have time to pursue things at my own pace I otherwise wouldn't. Definitely been a positive thing for me overall. A normal day for me before this would be: get into the office for 9.30-10am, leave 5ish, come back knackered, make dinner, then back out again to one of the groups/activities I go to during the week, get back and go to bed. I'd then spend the measly 2 days off waking up at 12pm to catch up on the sleep I've missed and getting ready to start all over again. Now, I'm already working by 10, I'm not rushing about, I'm having meetings over Skype/Zoom where necessary and keeping in touch on stuff like Slack/Discord/emails. I don't feel as knackered after a day of working and it's nice to be able to go for a walk at a nearby park and watch TV/play some games/read a book on my lunch break. I'd happily WFH forever, and I'd get a dug like I've wanted to for years but never could because I'm out all day. I keep in touch with my friends & family regularly and if anything feel as though I chat more with them and make more time for the things and people that matter to me. I'm lucky enough to be in a position where I don't need to be on premises to do work. If folk want to go back, let them, but don't force me to. I'll happily come in for meetings, catch-ups, and stuff that requires immediate input like that, but apart from that I'd like to keep living this life at my own pace, thanks. by fenrisulfr94 (Wed 15th Jul 2020 1:25pm)
  • I've been getting the Pure Roasters stuff you mentioned - it's probably the nicest coffee subscription I've tried. I used to be signed up to one in Livingston but they went out of business a while back, and I can't attest to any of the other local roasters. Thumbs up from me for Pure Roasters though, the Mad Goff coffee is pure nice. by fenrisulfr94 (Tue 21st Jul 2020 3:53pm)

  • Football's the worst thing about Glasgow. Growing up it was all the other guys in school would talk about and you were a pure outcast if you weren't interested. Even playing football in PE you were just expected to know all the rules and be at least halfway decent at it, the fucking dog's abuse I got for no being mad for it was shocking. I had family members trying to get me learning the songs and everything when I was a wee boy and the pure hatred I've heard from some of them is sickening. For years making pals the first question you'd get asked is "what team do you support?" and having to just say Partick Thistle because saying you don't watch the fitba just isn't a concept. All that aside the city doesn't even feel safe when Rangers or Celtic are playing and they've proven time and time again they cannae be trusted to act like adults. This isnae new either, it's just the latest embarrassment and the blatant disregard for the pandemic rubs salt right into the wound. I've no seen my family - they're high risk - or friends or coworkers for months; my mental health is shite; so this just feels like a big fuck you to everyone else who's been going through the same and worse. There needs to be serious action against this now. What makes football fans so fucking special? Absolute power ae cunts. by fenrisulfr94 (Tue 9th Mar 2021 3:09am)
  • Where I stay my close has had the old big steel bins for yonks. The lane gets used for flytipping on the regular so sometimes going round with the rubbish is a pure gauntlet. They eventually gave us a single blue bin for the entire close. Obviously overflowing straight away. I'm thinking it's worth making a big fuss over this now since the elections are coming up, but also towards COP26 when it comes to Glasgow. The place is an absolute tip - no really a good look for a city that's hosting a global climate change summit this year. by fenrisulfr94 (Wed 31st Mar 2021 2:47pm)
  • Thanks! I've so far had good experiences with them - last winter we had a day-long power cut and they were quick off the mark to come round with firewood and space heaters. So I think if I asked them about underfloor stuff they would at least consider it. Where was it you had a look for the info? I'm seeing Home Energy Scotland at the moment and aye they're giving me a helpline to ring as well. by fenrisulfr94 (Fri 10th Dec 2021 11:26am)
  • Ta, I've sent them an email - they wanted a sheet of info from the website and a PDF it generates by fenrisulfr94 (Fri 10th Dec 2021 12:45pm)

  • I got my master's in the engineering department at Strathclyde, and the career prospects are pretty good. Depending on your field, places like SSE, SPEN, Ofgem, RES, DNV, to name a few all have offices in Glasgow and tend to hire all year round. My internship in undergrad was dogshit and never really came up again afterwards - just a course requirement. Happy for you to drop me a message if you want to talk about it - the careers advice had some pretty lukewarm advice for me too, except that Scotland's economy is mostly small-to-medium enterprises, which I thought was cool. by fenrisulfr94 (Mon 25th Jul 2022 4:05pm)
