  • Great, thanks very much. What are the prices of say a pint in a pub or club? A meal out in a restaurant? All that good stuff, if you have it to hand. I take it I wouldn't be able to save even 200 quid a month on those wages? by mashedpotato92 (Wed 24th Mar 2021 8:23pm)
  • Very convenient :) That seems quite expensive, I always forget about council tax, we don't have that to pay here! It makes me upset when I see how badly paid my profession is in the UK generally - as my last job I had here I earned €37,000 and came out with around 2,6 a month after tax. Grrrr. I guess I just want a change. Thanks for the response! by mashedpotato92 (Wed 24th Mar 2021 8:33pm)
  • Thank you! Yeah it is fairly crap let's be honest... Yeah, I've heard a lot about it and lots of jobs that would interest me (albeit diabolically paid) and have some friends living there as students at the minute but I just wanted to ask workers and people who are renting elsewhere and eating out, etc their take on it too! thanks :) by mashedpotato92 (Wed 24th Mar 2021 8:37pm)
  • I'm not looking for luxury, just an area where I won't get stabbed walking around with an Irish accent at 9pm hahah by mashedpotato92 (Wed 24th Mar 2021 8:44pm)
  • Oh, really? That's decent. Where would I find these jobs advertised - on the councils website directly? And the addiction team worker, the same? Yeah, private companies take the piss with wages, it's ridiculous. I wouldn't do agency work - it's too unreliable. Thank you for all that info - appreciate it :) by mashedpotato92 (Wed 24th Mar 2021 8:40pm)
  • Ah, you're an angel - thanks so much for that. I wasn't sure where exactly to be looking. No, I'm not a social worker ( I was about to say unfortunately, but fuck no, I'd rather eat my eyeball than be a social worker). I have been working on a masters in social research though, but that's been deferred until next year! My current qual is a bachelors (4yrs) in social care practice from a university. I'll deffo keep an eye out on that website, you star!! I just would hate to move to a new city alone and then be really stuck for money! by mashedpotato92 (Wed 24th Mar 2021 8:51pm)

  • Thank you, but another thing I asked was getting from place to place within those two regions for reaching the clients I'd be working for, which I didn't see. OK southside or Paisley - gotcha. Thanks. by mashedpotato92 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 6:04pm)
  • Thank you! And what about getting around those areas and in between, I assume the same links? I'm so sorry but I don't fully understand what another redditoe meant by 'use the side bar'. Tysm by mashedpotato92 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 6:13pm)
  • Better than Dublin where I can't even live decently on a 2.5k a month salary. 1k for a room bolloks to that by mashedpotato92 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 6:10pm)
  • The reason I say glasgow is because I have a couple of friends living there and I do quite enjoy the city life. I wouldn't really mind an hour commute there and back and have most of my driving lessons done at the point so could hopefully get a car within a year. Otherwise, it would be a no brainer! Is it easy to get to glasgow city from there yeah? I'm seeing around 20min on Scotrail which would be ideal. Thanks for the info by mashedpotato92 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 7:21pm)

  • Also - is there a specific website here just or public sector/civil service type jobs? I'm earning 25.5k now but my manager hates me and my job is tough on the brain - I need out! by mashedpotato92 (Tue 15th Mar 2022 7:57pm)

  • I never have any issue in standing beside them and very firmly asking them to move their bag off the seat. Do that. Their bag didn't pay to get on the train, I did. by mashedpotato92 (Tue 29th Mar 2022 5:08pm)
  • If its close, its £1.70, if it's a but further, its £2.50 on first bus. McGills charge you £4.70 and you can get an all day ticket (which is also a return) for £4.70 too, first bus or mcgills. Get the app its £4.60 or £4 for student fare. I may be wrong/missing stuff. Moved here 6 months ago by mashedpotato92 (Fri 1st Apr 2022 7:18pm)
  • Go outside of the airport a little and order one, glasgo cabs is usually fairly decent or call a local one, there are loads. Don't get an airport one, I paid £35 for a taxi that would normally cost me £20-22 because I just wanted to get home. by mashedpotato92 (Wed 6th Apr 2022 7:04pm)
  • You don't need to be on megabucks. I was earning 25k when I got my own 1 bed flat 2 miles out from the city at £495/month. They just do an affordability check, so don't mention that you're a student, just say yes to full time employment and combine you & your partners incomes. More than enough for rent on a flat I'm assuming. by mashedpotato92 (Mon 11th Apr 2022 7:07pm)
  • Yep, more than once. I just tell them I don't have cash and that people generally get paid at the end of the month anyway. Jesus, you'd swear that getting a taxi was meant to be convenient or something. Always have time to run to the cash machine before I get a taxi me... by mashedpotato92 (Thu 14th Apr 2022 5:20pm)

  • I didnt buy them, got it off my letting agent as a few vouchers. just bring my card/key to the paypoint, they scan the voucher then put it on it. No questions asked. It also just goes onto the meter too and minus any emergency credit you may have used. I've never had any issues. Maybe I'm not understanding what you mean though? My bad if so! by mashedpotato92 (Wed 8th Jun 2022 8:41pm)
  • Oh yeah for sure, I've used them myself, funded by the DWP and deffo real! I wouldn't dream of doing that to someone if I thought it may be fake 😕 Ugh, that sounds like a nightmare. Meters are a ballache. Fuck meters. Of course. And thanks for our concern :) this is a class subreddit man, I love Glasgow by mashedpotato92 (Wed 8th Jun 2022 9:48pm)

Offered him £200 to do it. I eventually pulled out because....actually, I don't know why I did. She's a cunt and I still want to pull her hair out. by mashedpotato92 (Sun 31st Jul 2022 10:31am)

  • I make £11.50 (at night) an hour dealing with people overdosing, self harming and absolutely drunk out of their faces. Alone. I wish I could strike by mashedpotato92 (Mon 29th Aug 2022 10:43pm)
  • Because if I don't come into work I don't get paid. There's not enough people in this line of work willing to strike as the staffing issues are massive and job security is often non existent. We're always made to feel bad for even taking sick days and the rest of the small staff teams have to bear the brunt of that, do double shifts, etc. Cray cray shit by mashedpotato92 (Tue 30th Aug 2022 7:10am)
  • Yeah, my bad. I think my point was basically I'm too replaceable and not many people in this field willing to. Our pay issues aren't as much of a scandal by mashedpotato92 (Tue 30th Aug 2022 7:20am)
  • Hey! I moved to Glasgow a year ago and honestly making pals as an adult is hard! I used bumble BFF mode and met a couple of gals who I still hang out with sometimes on that. I used a Facebook page called glasgow gal pals, which can be hit or miss but many types of girls on it with lots of different interests. Met another on that a couple of weeks back. I'm still finding new pals here too, always on the hunt! Feel free to give me a message if you like too! I'm 30, work in the health/social care sector and adopt a general "yeah ok" attitude to most suggestions, so always up for trying new things! by mashedpotato92 (Wed 7th Sep 2022 10:18pm)

  • I have similar issues with trying to dry clothes. I also have a cat who pulls everything off the clothes horse so no luck there, don't even bother anymore. Bought one of the vertical ones but I can't put it together because I am an actual idiot. I usually just use my radiators cause the heat needs to be turned on these days anyway, but yeah costs a bomb. Heated clothes airer is a good shout, but expensive to run. Does anyone you know have a drier that you could use? Sometimes I sneakily bring a few bits into work to dry in the drier but I don't tell anyone or let them see me 🤣 by mashedpotato92 (Sun 13th Nov 2022 6:34pm)
  • No advice really, I'm also from Ireland and you'll find it much cheaper to drink out & rent. Same flat I rent here is £495 a month which would cost around €1500 in Dublin. by mashedpotato92 (Mon 21st Nov 2022 9:13am)

  • *glesga by mashedpotato92 (Thu 24th Nov 2022 9:05am)
  • Yes!! From Dublin, moved to Glasgow September 2021. Rent much cheaper. Easily rent your own flat which is basically impossible in Dublin unless you've a well above average wage! I pay £495/month for a 1 bed tenement flat and I'm fortunately allowed a cat! Thats about 2.5 miles out east end of city. Rent in southside central/west end/city centre can be a good bit more. If you've a partner/friend you'll get a cracking flat between yous! Think commuter towns too as cheaper rent (on a good train line). Council tax is something we have in the UK though so factor that in too. For refuse, water, all that pish. Goes in bands. Most flats are between a-c, mine is band a and my council tax is around £96/month atm, change yearly but not much. Foods the same as home - inflated to fuck Bit cheaper to eat out. Significantly cheaper to buy drinks in a supermarket/pub. Taxis also a bit cheaper. Wages are lower, but goes without saying why. Public transport is around the same for buses, but can save a good bit using the first bus app Trains can be a bit pricey but can also save with prepaid tickets. People are class and a load of Irish here too!! I don't regret moving and I recommend it. by mashedpotato92 (Wed 7th Dec 2022 7:45pm)
  • Safety wise, honestly I feel safer here than Dublin City centre. Buses not overly reliable at times but trains a bit more so. Healthcare -- so national insurance for that is taken out as a tax too. But, all meds and hospital stays are free from doctor/hospital in Scotland, waiting times people complain about but I Still think better than HSE. Obviously you can get private health insurance too but it's not really needed unless it's urgent. For example, I broke my wrist and within six days I had my date for surgery. Huge brown bag of painkillers and anything else I needed given to me for recovery. Check-ups quick. Waiting lists can be long though for some things like follow on smear tests? Etc. few hours wait in a & e atm but I mean once I waited for 22hour in the Mater in a & e so I don't complain about the NHS. Can be a week.or 2 wit to get a GP appt tho unless it's an emergency, and there is a dedicated mental health NHS line you can call. Sorry for the block of text BTW! by mashedpotato92 (Wed 7th Dec 2022 8:57pm)

  • The 77 first bus goes from town, starts from buchanan Station. Takes around an hour. So, whatever the single fare for that is - maybe around £2.70? by mashedpotato92 (Fri 20th Jan 2023 3:39pm)
  • Ah, never thought of this. I decided to call up and ask current prices so I could give OP a definite figure, since they change so much. Its £5.75 for an adult single from airport-buchanan or vice versa. Get the first bus app and the single for the airport 500 is £8.50 on it as opposed to £9 and you also are given a ticket to use for another first bus that day too if you needed to get home, etc afterwards. Honestly, I'd just pay the extra £2.75 with the extra ticket for another bus that day aaaand save 40 minutes for yourself too. The hacks from Glesga Airport are such a fucking rip off, I live east end of city and he charged me £38. Sometimes you're just so bolloxed tired though that you're like "fuck it, taxi". Taxis in not too bad depending on day/time, even with the £5 fee added on. Usually costs me around £25 with the fee. Hope you all enjoyed me Ted talk 👄 by mashedpotato92 (Fri 20th Jan 2023 5:44pm)

  • Pros: big front windows, lovely for the summer. Usually cheaper rents. Lovely high ceilings which I love. Cons: I'm ground floor on main road so it's noisy during the day, single glazed windows so very cold in winter and heat just disappears once you turn it off, buzzers always broken, front door is a piece of shit, common garden/bin shed that can get vile (saw a rat in mine once), oh and can't forget the mice! Looks like a long list of cons lol but honestly I love my little flat! And I'm allowed pets too :) by mashedpotato92 (Sat 28th Jan 2023 12:19pm)
  • What a shower of areholes. You cannot claim to be a pro-life good person and target people at their most vulnerable. This mostly will not change people's minds, just make them more anxious about the whole experience and bad about going through with it. I'm 100% pro-choice and it's cool to be pro-life, I've no issue with it, but this honestly feels like Ireland back when the referendum was coming up (I lived in Ireland then). Ughhh. by mashedpotato92 (Wed 1st Feb 2023 3:17pm)
  • I was once on the dole, getting 100 quid a week and my (millionaire) granny who I was living with used to take 30 off me. • Ignore if you can't afford this option: but have you looked at renting your own place, even a studio/little 1 bed tenement somewhere? I say this as glasgow is still fairly affordable for flats like that, particularly in the east end/southside (not the posh part of it). Might not be the best area, but I rent a flat in the east end for £495 and it does me great. That was my rent a year ago and might be a little more now, but if you can afford it and the extras that go with it, try that too. When I moved to Glasgow first, I had a really cheap flatshare - flat was lovely, but the girl I lived with was a nightmare, so renting alone negates that too. by mashedpotato92 (Wed 15th Mar 2023 2:45pm)

  • Why don't you for next time you're tempted prebook the taxi for the night before? They still add on the £5 for the fee for drop-off, but still only costs me £25 from East end. by mashedpotato92 (Wed 29th Mar 2023 10:21am)
  • Prebook the taxi the night before on glasgo or something similar so you don't need to use a black cab by mashedpotato92 (Wed 29th Mar 2023 12:09pm)
  • Yeah absolutely but it usually turns up in my experience, especially at that time :) really? Yeah, the taxi sitch in Glasgow is fairly dire at the best of times, I seem to have more luck with airport fares at 4.30am though. I understand though when you're not confident of it showing that you'd be reluctant by mashedpotato92 (Wed 29th Mar 2023 2:46pm)

  • Thank you so much for this - so helpful and thank you for taking the time to read and respond. I'm not looking for anything mad, maybe just a few lifts a week at £30, which is the going rate. Thanks again :) by mashedpotato92 (Mon 10th Apr 2023 1:43pm)
  • No, not at all. It provided me with info that I honestly hadn't even heard of before. Yeah, I've tried that and I don't mean mean toot my own horn but I think I do them quite well and take my time, but nobody seems to contact me - gah! I shall try n even louder and wonder word of mouth. Thank you lovely Internet stranger :) by mashedpotato92 (Mon 10th Apr 2023 1:58pm)
  • There's a train journey you can do (and i still want to!) from Glasgow to Fort William/Mallaig. Its supposed to be one of the most scenic routes, like, anywhere. Its the West Highland line. Think it costs around £45 return off peak, but it does take a while. Around 5 hours each way, with a little time to explore before the return journey. If you go to Mallaig, you pass the Glenfinnan Viaduct used in the Harry Potter movies or the Hogwarts express! by mashedpotato92 (Fri 14th Apr 2023 7:52pm)
  • I've no idea what you're talking about but just came to say that you're not insane. Have a lovely day Internet stranger! Ps. In Ireland we call it a piggy back ;) by mashedpotato92 (Mon 17th Apr 2023 2:58pm)

  • Yeah, I love Glasgow. Moved here a year and a half ago and it still hasn't lost its appeal to me. It might be filthy but there's something about it, lol. by mashedpotato92 (Mon 24th Apr 2023 5:08pm)

  • Civil service executive officer, 26k. Sad when I see how much others earn. Changed career this year so I guess its a fair salary, but if only the public sector paid a bit better eh! Was working in addiction/homeless services before this (which I studied for in uni) which was even lower paid and took a big toll mentally! by mashedpotato92 (Sun 14th May 2023 11:05am)
  • I do one of those roles - correct! The good things are a fabulous pension in the region of 26-30% and a permanent contract till whenever the f I like once I pass probation. Also good progression opportunities. Wage rises are terrible though, 4.5% plus I think about £1500 after a year in the job. I don't have kids, so I can't complain too much and count my stars that I can afford to rent my own flat etc, but still, I feel anything less than 30k for a fairly important job is a disgrace. by mashedpotato92 (Sun 14th May 2023 1:51pm)
