  • I live on Mitchell Street and it’s HELL. Been here over 2 years and it was perfect at first, but since the start of lockdown we have drug addicts break into our building to sleep in the bin room or the stairway. There’s so much mess in our bin room that we have rats there. I’ve seen people smoking and injecting in broad daylight in my stairway (stairway has windows which are visible from my bedroom). The drug addicts have threatened residents, cleaners on multiple occasions that they’d stab them with needles. Our common areas smell of smoke, urine etc most of the time, and I find needles and bags of rubbish in the stairway all the time. We love our flat - it has amazing views, it’s great value for money considering the location and it’s so convenient. Unfortunately the police can’t do much about the drug addicts breaking in (police have caught them 4-5 times and they’re always just moved on). The factors couldn’t care less, so we’re moving out next month. (Could say so much more about this it’s been a nightmare! And don’t even get me started on the amount of air bnb’s that get used as party flats!!!) by megxi (Wed 27th Jan 2021 2:10am)
  • It’s such a shame because the flats are so lovely. We’re gutted to be moving because our flat has been such a lovely wee sanctuary for us but we (along with many other residents) are scared to even take our bins out/nip to the shops alone. by megxi (Wed 27th Jan 2021 12:21pm)
  • I’ve dealt with Contempo Property and Fineholm. Both been great to rent through and any issues dealt with quickly! by megxi (Tue 2nd Feb 2021 8:47pm)
  • We signed our lease with them over 2 years ago and it was a mixed bag, but we went for it anyway. We’ve always had issues dealt with promptly, and they were quick to sort our reference as we’re moving in a few weeks. Let’s see if I still agree when it comes time to get my deposit back! by megxi (Tue 2nd Feb 2021 11:16pm)
  • Going for my check up and hygenist visit next week - dentist called me early Feb to arrange it. by megxi (Thu 4th Mar 2021 1:12pm)
  • Aware that most people have had a negative experience so I guess we must be the outlier, but I just moved out a Fineholm flat having rented there 2+ years and they were really great to us. It was a city centre flat, and it was really quality furnishings that had obviously been taken good care of (I guess landlord is more to credit there but still). Any repairs were dealt with promptly, and we had a nightmare factor that Fineholm supported us with chasing for issues in communal areas. After living there over 2 years there was a bit of wear and tear that I expected to have to fight over to get our deposit back but no issues at all - only being charged with the cost of repainting a bit of the kitchen where my cooking has left it’s mark! The rest they have noted for the landlord to fix before the next tenants but we’re not being held responsible for the cost. Compared to the letting agent we’ve just moved to (flat was coated in dust, dirty plates and cups in kitchen, moth infestation, rusted heaters, rubbish left in cupboards etc and little to no willingness to help with any of this) I’d go back to Fineholm if I could. I think all letting agents are just as bad as each other tbh so if you find a flat that ticks all your boxes just go with it! by megxi (Fri 5th Mar 2021 4:28pm)
  • To add re rental increases - we were there over 2 years and rent only went up once by £25. We were given plenty notice etc. by megxi (Fri 5th Mar 2021 4:30pm)
  • https://www.manwithvanglasgow.com Have been using Brian and his sons for all my moves since 2013 and they’re brilliant. I was sure we’d need 2 trips for our last move but they had it all done in one trip, all unloaded into new flat in under 90 minutes. Highly recommend! by megxi (Fri 2nd Apr 2021 11:32am)
  • Whilst this is a nice idea, there are a lot of us who live in the city centre. On occasion my family will drive into town to bring me prescriptions from the GP, or more recently take me to get the vaccine. The idea of not being able to get a lift home from my family when visiting isn’t really feasible. Already a nightmare navigating the one way systems! by megxi (Fri 2nd Apr 2021 7:03pm)
  • Also in Glasgow City Centre - Band F Council Tax and don’t even have glass recycling bins in our building. My building has over 40 flats and only 5 small cardboard / plastic recycling bins for us to share! by megxi (Fri 9th Apr 2021 3:24pm)
  • Second that zone lettings are useless - our flat was an absolute dump when we moved in this Feb despite them claiming it had been professionally cleaned. Stained and moth eaten carpets, dirty kitchenware left in cupboards, rusted heaters. Been left to deal with the clean up ourselves and only just had pest control out to deal with the moths. by megxi (Thu 15th Apr 2021 10:06am)

  • So my granny and her best mate ran a menage for as long as I can remember, and probably long before I was born! They were both from council estates in the east end originally, so I have no idea how it started but was likely a savings scheme to help out those in the community who didn’t have access to any loans, or who had a mistrust of putting savings in the bank. I remember loads of people being involved - family, friends and neighbours. When my grans council estate was demolished and they all moved away, the menage kept them in touch as they’d all make the effort to drop off their £5 to my grans every week. My gran would meet her pal in a diner in shettleston every Saturday to pass on their sides share of the money to pass on to whoever’s turn it was that week. Turns would be planned out in advance so no fighting over whose turn it was that week. Christmas turns we’re always popular ofcourse! Some people had multiple turns - my dad always had 3. One in April for his car tax, one he’d give to me and one to my sister, like a bi-annual pocket money! I loved getting involved as a kid and my gran would let me help plan the turns. Taught me about money management from a young age which I’m grateful for now! It was a well respected commitment - missing your “bill” would affect someone in the community so everyone made the effort to make sure they paid on time. As my gran got older, her best mate passed away, as did many of her family, friends and neighbours involved. Now it’s just her and the immediate family involved, so not much money in it. I think they do it now out of tradition more than anything else! Explaining to my other half from London he thinks we’re all daft, but I think there were so many benefits. The money management support, using it to teach your kids how to save up for things they want, and the community spirit that it kept alive. by megxi (Mon 26th Apr 2021 3:32pm)
  • Love this! My granny and her pal never took a free turn for it, but lots of folk would send chocolates, flowers or a bottle of whiskey up as a thank you for running it! by megxi (Mon 26th Apr 2021 3:35pm)
  • I’m not a drinker, but missed going for dinner and being around people. Went to bierhalle on Monday for pizza and an alcohol free beer, my other half had his first draft pint since last year and both of us very much enjoyed! Luckily the rain stopped for an hour just as we sat down - even if it had rained though would have been worth it just for a bit of normality back! by megxi (Wed 28th Apr 2021 11:40am)
  • I rented from Contempo Property when I lived in Bridgeton. Stefan was brilliant to deal with, quick to fix anything and really friendly so would recommend! by megxi (Mon 17th May 2021 1:43pm)
  • Try Cranside Kitchen - big heated outdoor area, they have different Glasgow restaurants operating out their kitchen including Greek, Italian and Scottish food. Usually very busy so you’d need to book. I love it because you can all order off different menus so keeps everyone happy! Edit: re vegetarian, took my veggie MIL there last summer and was lots of options for her especially on the Greek menu so she was happy by megxi (Wed 19th May 2021 11:07am)
  • I don’t think they’re actually doing surge vaccinations - they’re just moving about who gets the appointments. Currently due my second dose - appointment scheduled for mid June in my 12th week since 1st dose, problem is I’m in London that week. Go online to reschedule and there’s not one single appointment for a second dose anywhere on the Glasgow health board for me to reschedule to - checked right into July. My other half due his 1st dose early June, he logs on and there was hundreds of appointments, even plenty for the next day. Phoned up the helpline and was told they can’t do anything - appointments are separate for first and second doses. Doesn’t make sense... it’s the same jab either way! I’m allowed to attend the drop in services that’ve just been announced, but don’t see why I can’t just book a slot so I know what’s what... by megxi (Sat 29th May 2021 11:40am)
  • I’d recommend asking your current letting agent if they have any preferred suppliers - that way they know you’ve gone to the effort and you use someone who knows the letting agents usual standards. We did this when moving out a Fineholm property, and they told us to book PAC (Professional Affordable Cleaning). Ian did a brilliant job, steam cleaned all our carpets etc too so would recommend them. by megxi (Mon 31st May 2021 4:07pm)
  • This woman is dangerous. She has a large following of mostly young women, some who could be in quite a vulnerable headspace. This business has been promoted by a few large Glasgow influencers in the past few months - I considered trying it out as people rave about the treatments (see Cupping Therapy). I love a bit of hippy dippy shit and astrology but never at the expense of science! Wondering if this business is in breach of health and safety regulations by actively spreading misinformation to their customers... by megxi (Mon 31st May 2021 4:04pm)
  • I get where you’re coming from - astrology is an easy target to make fun of! Thing is people are allowed to just... enjoy things.... and it’s not that deep :) by megxi (Mon 31st May 2021 9:38pm)
  • Pretty much sums it up! by megxi (Mon 31st May 2021 9:37pm)
  • 100% - there’s no science to it. Sometimes I do see patterns in it and go huh that’s nice but I don’t plan my life around it. To explain the “Mercury retrograde” example that the white rabbit loon referred to - 3 times a year it looks like mercury starts orbiting backwards from the perspective of the earth. It isn’t - just looks like it from here. As astrologers believe Mercury is the planet of communication, it’s believed that when Mercury is in retrograde communication breaks down, plans go wrong etc. This woman tried to blame her policy landing like it has on Mercury being in retrograde which is 100% laughable. by megxi (Mon 31st May 2021 10:00pm)
  • Man with Van Glasgow - run by a guy called Brian and his sons. Booked them every time I’ve moved since 2013 and they’re brilliant. We were sure we’d need 2 trips with the amount of stuff we had but they packed up our old place and unloaded into new place in 90 mins, just one trip needed. Great guys! https://www.manwithvanglasgow.com by megxi (Tue 8th Jun 2021 10:43am)
  • I lived in a city centre block of flats that had a nightmare with this. All you can do is phone 101 (non emergency police) and they’ll move them on if they have time. We did this constantly - maybe 1 in 3 times they’d be able to actually come out and about 5 times they caught them but just moved them on, no arrests made. Eventually we just got sick of it and moved, with plenty other residents trying to sell up too. by megxi (Sun 13th Jun 2021 4:54pm)
  • Second the 16-25 railcard - £30 for a year but from my experience it pays for itself in one return trip to London as you’ll save more than £30 with it! by megxi (Thu 24th Jun 2021 3:55pm)
  • Congratulations! Tuesday will be 3 years sober for me by megxi (Sat 17th Jul 2021 12:51pm)
  • Not got much advice for employment in the meantime, but to confirm that if you’re studying programming your job prospects will be much better once you’ve graduated. I work in tech and many tech companies recruitment processes are designed in a way to not discriminate against introverted folk. Given how many technical/developer type people are introverted and not people persons, they’d turn most their talent away if they only hired extroverted social type people. Keep up the coding in your spare time, hang in there and best of luck with the job search! by megxi (Fri 23rd Jul 2021 3:03pm)
  • I just made mine up with various bits and bobs - got a mini shower gel from lush and a nail polish from boots in my wedding colours, wee bottle of bubbly and some chocolates from hotel chocolat on Buchanan street (they do 3 packs for £10). Got my cringey “will you be my bridesmaid” cards on Etsy though so not sure where you’d get these in town - maybe try paperchase? by megxi (Sun 25th Jul 2021 1:43pm)
  • Currently living in city centre (near central). Previously in a 1 bed which was Band F, now in a 2 bed which is Band G. Costs are ridiculous and we don’t even have proper recycling facilities so it’s deffo a thorn in my side… but one I put up with for the ideal location! by megxi (Thu 29th Jul 2021 10:49am)
  • Worth having a look at Arta depending on the number of guests. We’re having a wee rehearsal dinner there night before our wedding in their indoor courtyard, hire was only £100 and then about £22.50pp for buffet. by megxi (Wed 11th Aug 2021 10:55am)
  • Sold James McAvoy a Boots meal deal once. Can confirm good guy by megxi (Wed 8th Sep 2021 3:30pm)
  • I’m getting married in Arta - they have a good selection of rooms to choose from. Just had our menu tasting recently and food was smashing too. Would recommend! by megxi (Mon 13th Sep 2021 3:45pm)
  • I’m G1 and use the Gorbals Health Centre - there’s multiple GP practices operating there so you should be able to find one. by megxi (Tue 14th Sep 2021 10:22am)
  • Only place in Glasgow I’ve ever seen alcohol free beer on draft was The Woods on Waterloo Street, and it was Heineken 0.0. Much more common to see it on draft in London so hopefully the trend makes its way up here soon! by megxi (Thu 30th Sep 2021 5:13pm)
  • Awesome - will check them out, thank you! by megxi (Tue 5th Oct 2021 5:57pm)
  • Can confirm they have coloured card in various sizes. Was after some for wedding planning/seating charts and Cass Art had lots! by megxi (Wed 6th Oct 2021 3:46pm)
  • Chaophraya is smashing, nice for a special occasion. New place called Panang just opened up on st Vincent street as well, same people as topolabamba I believe. Worth a try, we enjoyed it! by megxi (Wed 6th Oct 2021 3:45pm)
  • I take a test every Saturday morning before I visit my 87 year old granny. Just to be safe! by megxi (Fri 8th Oct 2021 4:54pm)
  • When I travel for work I go to restaurants by myself often - so peaceful! Restaurants like Yo Sushi are great for eating alone. As others have said elsewhere, we all think what are people thinking about me, but they rarely ever are. Instead they’re sitting worrying about what people think about them! We’re all just worrying about what others think of us which is mad when you think about it. by megxi (Mon 11th Oct 2021 12:10pm)
  • Same here - I got a letter from them saying if I didn’t confirm I still needed the appointment they’d take me off the list. Seems like checking if our issues have gone away on their own is the only action being taken to tackle the backlog! by megxi (Fri 15th Oct 2021 11:24am)
  • I’m always on the hunt for alcohol free on draft - haven’t seen a Guinness 0.0 anywhere yet! Only places I know of in Glasgow you’ll get draft alcohol free is brewdog, or The Woods on Waterloo Street used to have Heineken 0.0 Update us if you find any! by megxi (Mon 18th Oct 2021 3:53pm)
  • We had to book a meeting room to work from for a day during lockdown last December as our electricity was going to be off all day - we booked in with Collabor8te based just near George Square and it was £48 for the 2 of us. Ideal! https://collabor8te.co.uk/ by megxi (Mon 18th Oct 2021 3:59pm)
  • Good luck! I love my data job. Power BI is my tool of choice. by megxi (Fri 29th Oct 2021 2:52pm)
  • Yes the desktop version is free! I’d recommend the Enterprise DNA YouTube channel - that’s where I picked up my skills. Both Tableau and Power BI very much in demand so can’t go wrong with either. by megxi (Fri 29th Oct 2021 9:14pm)
  • Well this is just great for residents that actually live in the city centre isn’t it… Been waiting 3 weeks for someone to come out and look at broken boiler and their excuse was “can’t drive into town because of COP”. How are people supposed to get lifts home, get shopping delivered, move into their flats…? by megxi (Thu 11th Nov 2021 1:19pm)
  • The article highlights that there are concerns over how much GCC have thought through how businesses will continue to get deliveries etc. I’m not sure I trust GCC to not make a massive cock up of it tbh. The contractor that comes to fix my boiler is in a private car, my sister dropping me off at home on a Saturday night so I don’t have to walk through town alone is in a private car. It’s not fair to residents who live here, and despite many residents raising concerns in the consultation I imagine we’ll be completely ignored in favour of good PR that comes with this gimmick policy by megxi (Thu 11th Nov 2021 1:33pm)
  • To quote from the article: “A core area restricted to public transport will be created within the next five years, stretching from George Square to pollution hot spot Hope Street across Argyle Street and up to Cathedral Street.” “"This core of Glasgow city centre will be given over entirely to public transport and to people moving actively," said Ms Aitken.” by megxi (Thu 11th Nov 2021 1:44pm)
  • Doesn’t matter how often it happens - what matters is that there’s a large number of residents living in the city centre, who are forgotten about and not listened to. Easy enough for you to dismiss these concerns but I’m sure you’d feel the same if this was being applied to your street. We pay extortionate council tax for what I feel are greatly reduced services to the rest of Glasgow residents by megxi (Thu 11th Nov 2021 1:50pm)
  • Have you ever tried moving into a flat via taxi ?! I’m not saying it’s not a nice concept I’m just saying it’s not feasible with the number of residents we have here. Full disclosure I don’t actually have a car - hence one of the reasons I live in the city centre! If they want all the Buchanan street and Mitchell street flats to turn into Airbnb’s and drive away actual residents then that’s what they’ll get because it’s already difficult enough to live centrally. My concerns as a resident are being downvoted as they highlight the inconvenience that residents present to people who would rather ignore the impracticalities of such a policy. by megxi (Thu 11th Nov 2021 1:58pm)
  • Yes I do - on Buchanan street. There’s a lot of advantages to living here and we love our flat, but we’re already limited as to which supermarkets we can order groceries from (because we don’t have a car, and because some supermarkets can’t figure out how to deliver to us). Many replies to me are repeating that commercial vehicles would be allowed - but worth noting that the article specifically calls out “public transport and active travel only”. Hence why I’m piping up that Susan Aitken may not have thought this through yet fully and is just announcing for some COP26 PR before actually considering residents and businesses needs. by megxi (Thu 11th Nov 2021 2:10pm)
  • Fair enough - where another resident disagrees with me I can completely understand. I do get where you’re coming from. Its more frustrating when people who don’t live in city centre dismiss my concerns knowing they don’t have to put up with them / would rather ignore us. by megxi (Thu 11th Nov 2021 2:33pm)
  • “Moving via taxi” is in response to be told that there are other ways to move goods around such as taxis by the previous poster. I’m highlighting that that would be ridiculous, and that people tend to use private cars from friends or family to use, or pay for a company to move them. I’ll repeat, this article refers to the zone being “public transport and active travel only”. It only mentions allowances for disabled people, not for commercial vehicles. So my grievance here is that I hope GCC are going to accommodate for the commercial vehicles that supermarkets, tradesman and moving vans etc use - seeing as the cited article doesn’t mention them and stakeholders are quoted as being concerned about the omission! by megxi (Thu 11th Nov 2021 4:06pm)
  • Seems like people would rather the nice flats in city centre are all Airbnb’s instead of pesky residents who have to get about their lives! by megxi (Thu 11th Nov 2021 4:49pm)
  • Flying tiger on sauchiehall street can have some really nice wee bits! I got lovely baubles in there a few years ago still using now. Also massive TJ Hughes just opened in at enoch with affordable garlands. Tesco are good value for lights. by megxi (Wed 24th Nov 2021 8:19pm)
  • Used to work for their parent company McCurrach, now Avidity - I was there 2 and a half years on the data side of things. I can vouch that office side of things everyone was lovely! Met a few Wave managers too who were sound. Never heard anyone thinking they’re an MLM before! There’s no financial incentive/ structure like that, they’re just a normal sales/marketing company. by megxi (Tue 30th Nov 2021 9:36pm)
  • Partner and I both have Edinburgh based jobs, so we found a flat 10 minute walk from queen street. Bit of a ridiculous solution - I’d be happy living near one of the stations in the east end like shettleston, garrowhill and take the long train but other half likes it more central. I try and work from home in the mornings and go through to the office at lunchtimes for the afternoon, then come home after 6 to avoid peak fares where I can as well! by megxi (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 11:40am)
  • Refuweegee can take new / unused toiletries for their welcome packs! by megxi (Sat 4th Dec 2021 10:28pm)
  • In the 90 day countdown for my wedding I’ve been planning since 2019… horrible having a constant state of uncertainty hanging over us when we should be enjoying this time. Trying to stay positive because it’s all so unknown, nothing else to do but hope for the best! by megxi (Fri 10th Dec 2021 1:02pm)
  • Getting married in Feb, and going with getting ready in hotel near the venue to save money on wedding cars from my parents. So as much as it would’ve been nice to see all the neighbours it’s just an extra logistical thing to plan and budget for which I couldn’t be arsed with! by megxi (Thu 16th Dec 2021 10:04am)

  • Send them a glitter bomb. Pour a bag of glitter into a Christmas card, post it to their address and voila. Not exactly an eco friendly solution but a satisfying one! by megxi (Thu 16th Dec 2021 7:08pm)
  • I did most of my ancestry research through marriage records on scotlands people. I found marriage records better to work with than birth, death or census because it verifies the maiden names and both parents names so easier to verify the record is for your actual relatives and not randoms with the same names. by megxi (Thu 16th Dec 2021 7:11pm)
  • Problem solved! by megxi (Thu 16th Dec 2021 8:05pm)
  • Same! I made a mistake with my paternal great-grandparents because of a mispronounced surname, and traced this family back to the 1700s, found out so much about their life and got really attached to finally find out I wasn’t related to them :( felt like a break up removing them from my tree and replacing them! by megxi (Thu 16th Dec 2021 8:33pm)
  • As well as AA, I’d recommend checking out soberbuzzscotland on Instagram. Lovely wee community of young sober scots, and they organise social meet ups and zoom calls which I’ve found really helpful by megxi (Wed 22nd Dec 2021 2:38pm)
  • From my experience of moving mid month, you only have to pay pro rata for the portion of the month you were liable rather than the whole month. I do believe they’ll base it off when your old tenancy ended and new tenancy started though rather than the date you moved in/out - we moved out about a week before our old tenancy ended to give us time to go back and clean up etc, so there was about a week where we were liable for both. I’ve always used live chat on their website to get these things sorted so hopefully that helps. by megxi (Wed 12th Jan 2022 2:41pm)
  • I live in one of the flats he plays nearby often and our reality was absolutely shattered the other night when we realised he isn’t even playing - it’s a recording!!! He has a speaker and we walked past him tuning up his instrument not playing it, while the familiar tones of despacito blared out through his speaker. It’s all a lie! Life hasn’t been the same since… by megxi (Thu 13th Jan 2022 12:40pm)
  • I’d recommend asking your letting agent if they have a preferred supplier - that way the cleaner will know what standards your letting agent usually have. I did this and was recommended PAC (Professional Affordable Cleaning). Ian was absolutely brilliant - charged £85 for a deep clean of our 1 bed flat, and £20 per carpet shampoo (we only had the one carpet). Would recommend him! As much as you can make an attempt at cleaning yourself and then go through the whole arguing with the letting agents, we just didn’t want the hassle of going back to the old place to clean when we could be getting settled into our new place so felt the money was well worth it! by megxi (Tue 18th Jan 2022 10:09am)
  • Flying out to Geneva from Edinburgh in Feb for a ski trip - we’re just gonna take the train from Queen Street and hope for the best that there’s room for skis! Will take an off peak train. by megxi (Sun 23rd Jan 2022 10:42am)
  • Zermatt for us too - going on our honeymoon! by megxi (Sun 23rd Jan 2022 11:14am)
  • Hmm this is a good point - hadn’t thought about the tram connection! With bus we can get an open return as well actually so may be more cost effective too by megxi (Sun 23rd Jan 2022 11:14am)
  • Also with Octopus and tariff running out next month - they emailed us to advise sticking on variable for now as works out cheapest, but also offered us a loyalty tariff for being existing customers that was cheaper than the market rate. by megxi (Mon 24th Jan 2022 11:20pm)
  • Agree with this - seems you got lucky with a good GP. A few years ago I went to my GP mid withdrawals, hallucinations and all the bells and whistles. Got told I shouldn’t go cold turkey, go home and drink some wine in measured amounts (if I was capable of that wouldn’t be in the situation would I!) and I’d get an appointment for alcohol services in next few weeks. Alcohol services at least gave me a units measuring cup to be fair to them so that was something tangible! by megxi (Thu 27th Jan 2022 1:35pm)
  • You’re absolutely spot on about the funding these large charities get and how sickening it is that nothing seemingly tangible is done with that money. I get so pissed when I walk down Buchanan street and see charity fundraisers on £10/hour, reporting into massive management structures where someone’s on 6 figures somewhere - telling me my £5/month direct debit is curing cancer/tackling homelessness/solving world hunger/insert cause here when all it’s doing is covering that persons wage for half an hour… Smaller community led charities like do so much more to help communities so that’s where the money should be going. For what it’s worth - might not be the best advice for everyone but I’ve always found the best solace in community groups on social media. Soberbuzz Scotland, Sobergirl Society and various online drug and alcohol coaches did so much more for my sobriety than any charity or local service did. by megxi (Thu 27th Jan 2022 1:40pm)
  • Would recommend checking out the Blushing Brides Scotland Facebook page. Suppliers with availability will post there, and you’ll see posts from others planning weddings asking for recommendations with lots of comments. I found my ceremony music through the page and she’s brilliant. by megxi (Wed 2nd Feb 2022 6:09pm)
  • Second this - Grace is amazing! by megxi (Sun 6th Feb 2022 7:56pm)
  • Would recommend looking into separate ceilidh band and DJ - my venue offered an in-house DJ for £200, so I’ve just booked a ceilidh for the first hour and a half of the night before the DJ does the disco. I’ve gone with Coila Ceilidh Band and got a really reasonable price from them. by megxi (Mon 7th Feb 2022 12:05pm)
  • City Centre residents - anyone else being absolutely terrorised by groups of teenagers breaking into your building? We’ve got a group of about 10 who every night for the last month or so smash up our common areas, smoke, set fire to shit and play very loud hide and seek (seems to defeat the purpose but hey ho). They leave piles of mess behind them - takeaways, booze, and recently mannequins that they used as a crash test dummy! It’s been an absolute nightmare and police only able to give them warnings (despite criminal damage) and “move them on”. by megxi (Tue 15th Feb 2022 9:49am)
  • What’s the odds of half my wedding guests all travelling up from London Friday/Saturday making it up as planned for our wedding on Sunday… literally playing life on hard mode at the minute! by megxi (Thu 17th Feb 2022 11:26am)
  • Married my best friend yesterday. 2 years of planning and stress and we had the perfect day. The rain even stopped for the 5 minutes I needed to run from my hotel to the venue in my wedding dress! Half our wedding guests were from London, and they haven’t stopped talking about how brilliant Glaswegians are. Smashed it guys! by megxi (Mon 21st Feb 2022 1:17pm)
  • Second this - the watch lab in Buchanan Galleries is where I always go by megxi (Mon 7th Mar 2022 10:35am)
  • I’m a recovered (recovering? Never sure which tense to use lol) alcoholic. Coming up for 4 years aff it. I chose not to go down the AA route, not because of the god stuff as like others have said your higher power can be anything you want to be. But for me, I just didn’t like the idea that I’m “powerless over alcohol” as AA step one says - I wanted to take my power back, be in control and hold myself accountable. I went through private therapy, drug and alcohol counselling and joined a local sober socialising groups. That worked better for me. Check out Sober Buzz Scotland on Instagram. Wouldn’t slate AA at all though - I know many people that it’s been a life saver for. Just thought I’d share my experience as an alternative. All the best of luck to you - you can do this! by megxi (Mon 7th Mar 2022 2:34pm)
  • We did pure roasters for a year - believe they’re just outside Glasgow. They were £9 a month but coffee was really nice by megxi (Wed 16th Mar 2022 4:30pm)
  • Last building I lived in in city centre, near central station, had one addict break into our building regularly and smoke/inject in our stairway. I had a lot of sympathy for him at first but he was very aggressive and threatening towards residents and the cleaners. Police never did anything more than move him on - if they had the time to see us. Current building is being terrorised by a gang of teenagers. They’ve smashed up our communal areas, broken our fire alarms, broken windows, threatened residents. They smoke/drink/have sex in the stairway. Police are a lot more on top of this one as it’s causing damage, but again their resources are strained and so the issue has dragged on for a few months now with little improvement. by megxi (Fri 18th Mar 2022 10:43am)
  • The old building was on Mitchell Street. Won’t disclose current building for privacy sakes but there are Glasgow Live articles about it (of course lol) by megxi (Fri 18th Mar 2022 11:17am)
  • When you’ve lived in the city centre long enough it unfortunately does become to feel like the norm. It comes with the territory. Our factors have been great at increasing security, the residents have all come together to keep an eye out but if a gang of 20 teenagers want into wreck your house, or an addict wants in to get their fix, they’re gonna get in and there’s nothing anyone can really do. The law protects minors, and copfs aren’t interested in taking on cases re addicts. Only solution is to move - which we’re doing soon. by megxi (Fri 18th Mar 2022 11:16am)
  • May be worth trying Skin + Me. You do it all online and send them photos, and a dermatologist assesses your case and sends you a custom prescription. I did it for 6 months after a bad acne flare up and they prescribed a tretinoin mix that pretty much cured my problem. You have to give it a couple of months to get work but got there in the end! Very affordable solution. by megxi (Tue 22nd Mar 2022 11:12am)
  • We just reserved a new build this weekend, as we couldn’t be arsed with anymore bidding disappointments. Might not have the same character as what we were after but we’ll make it our own. by megxi (Thu 24th Mar 2022 5:07pm)
  • Can hear him from my living room right now as windows are open… thank fuck we’re moving in a few weeks by megxi (Sun 3rd Apr 2022 2:41pm)
  • It’s not just 220 Wallace Street anymore. You should see the absolute state of flats in Buchanan Street. Not due to fault of tenants or owners - teenagers hanging about town have been breaking in, smashing the place up, getting pissed, having sex and using communal areas as toilets. Police “can’t do anything” as they’re under 16. Factors won’t make repairs as it’ll just get trashed again. Only solution is to move out - thank god we’re just renting. by megxi (Sat 9th Apr 2022 12:11pm)
  • If they can catch them (building has 2 exits so the police coming turns into a Tom & Jerry like scenario), they just give them all a lift home. Rinse and repeat each weekend. Kids nor their parents could care less and seem to enjoy the 999 taxi service by megxi (Sat 9th Apr 2022 3:01pm)
  • 2 bed in city centre. Rent £995pcm, council tax is Band G so £299pcm (we pay our council tax over 12 months not 10). by megxi (Wed 13th Apr 2022 3:34pm)
  • From January this year, there’s been a complete shift in the kids hanging about city centre. I was living in a flat on Buchanan Street that was targeted by gangs of kids that smashed the place up, threatening us. Police can’t do a thing as they’re under 16. All they can do is give them lifts home… few articles online about it. Here’s one: https://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/news/glasgow-news/glasgow-police-acutely-aware-teenage-23784529 by megxi (Thu 5th May 2022 8:55am)
  • I also attempted to have a word - got called a speccy bastard and they ran round my close looking for me all night. I was like Clark Kent the rest of the 2 months I lived there, never leaving my flat with glasses on for fear of being recognised! by megxi (Thu 5th May 2022 10:26am)
  • Another from earlier in the year specifically about my old building. Was behind a pay wall for a while, not sure if that’s still the case: https://www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/news/19971060.residents-plush-glasgow-city-centre-flats-terrorised-groups-anti-social-youths/ (Edited to remove amp link) by megxi (Thu 5th May 2022 10:25am)
  • Many residents felt this was the root cause of the problem. SNP councillor said it can’t be because “uptake on the free bus travel has been really low”, however police advised the kids in our building are coming from as far as Falkirk and Aberdeen, so that would suggest otherwise by megxi (Thu 5th May 2022 10:31am)
