  • I realise you said you wouldn’t want to use NHS resources, but you could consider self referring to Lifelink. They would carry out an assessment with you and could help decide which type of professional you wish to see and whether it would be NHS or private. https://lifelink.org.uk If you feel up to it, you could also ask your GP (or health visitor if you have a pre-school child) for other services in your area. P.S. As someone who works in the NHS, please don’t feel that you shouldn’t use ‘NHS resources’. You are entitled to the service and are as deserving of support as anyone else (although private options will likely have shorter waiting times). by ryovyse (Tue 22nd Jan 2019 11:20pm)
  • No one has mentioned Ranjit's kitchen in the South of the city yet. It's BYOB although probably too small for 11 people in one group. It's not what we woud consider a UK 'curry house' as it's Punjabi food... it's very authentic though if anyone want's to experience what Indian food is like from that region. by ryovyse (Mon 28th Jan 2019 2:15pm)

  • The majority of asylum seekers who have their application rejected are successful on appeal. The process can be quite complicated, and any little mistake can lead to the application being rejected. A rejection doesn't neccessarily mean that they do not have legitimate cause for seeking asylum. Also, whatever your beliefs on asylum seekers, changing someone's locks when they nip out of the house and leaving them destitute is a shitty thing to do. by ryovyse (Tue 17th Sep 2019 8:28pm)

  • You make a good point. The evidence shows that expanding and improving roads leads to more cars/people driving and doesn’t ease congestion. The opposite may be true, lowering road capacity leading to a reduction in cars/people driving. by ryovyse (Thu 14th May 2020 12:04pm)
  • I like this. I realise they're not Scottish names, and I don't think it's a attempt to re-name the streets. I think the idea is to highlight how deeply routed slavery is in our society, with the foundation of the city built using profits of the slave trade/belief that black people are worth less than white people. by ryovyse (Sat 6th Jun 2020 2:26pm)
  • Never said it was the full story. The wealth from tobacco/sugar/cotton/human trafficking laid many foundations in the 18th century, from building and streets to subsidising Watt’s education leading to the improvements of the steam engine and the industrial revolution. Much of the achievements from coal/steel industry in the 19th century were built on the foundations of what slave profits achieved in the century before. by ryovyse (Sat 6th Jun 2020 3:21pm)
  • Saw this today and thought there was an intersting difference between Edinburgh and Glasgow's approach to the food waste piling up. From the article: Edinburgh council : 'Councils which kept the service include Edinburgh City, which noted food waste would become a "public health hazard" if left to build up.' Glasgow: 'We are aware that despite the instruction for people to use general waste bins for food waste, there are food waste bins in back courts that now require to emptied.' by ryovyse (Sat 20th Jun 2020 7:39pm)

  • People steal magnets from heavy main doors in tenements/housing blocks for this. Been told the magnets sell for £600. by ryovyse (Mon 6th Jul 2020 11:31am)
  • That someone is/are the community police officers and housing association at a local community hub. The magnets are taken from the heavy red doors you see in some social housing. Maybe it’s £600 to replace them and they’re cheaper on the street. by ryovyse (Mon 6th Jul 2020 1:45pm)
  • Folk do take them and some of the magnets on the link you’ve shared are £240. Maybe they’re just taking them for scrap, who knows. I’ll take your word for the price of magnets for fishing though, I didn’t even realise it was a thing. by ryovyse (Mon 6th Jul 2020 2:07pm)

  • Since we’re sharing jobby stories; I know someone who moved into a nice new student flat, and in the first week, someone came in and left a jobby in their oven, proceeded to close the it and turn it on. • Tell her to phone her Health Visitor; if she’s in Glasgow they’ll make a referral to citizens advice and she’ll receive a phone call to chat about these things. • A big issue is that another spike in COVID will fill up all the ICU beds, so if you fall off a ladder and bang your head, have a heart attack, need emergency surgery... the staff and equipment aren’t available so you’ll just die unless they take folk off the ventilators so they can die and you take their place. We had 173 ICU beds in Scotland and that can be quadrupled to 700 (https://www.gov.scot/news/intensive-care-units-show-resilience-during-covid-19/). There just isn’t capacity to care for thousands of sick people no matter what resources you throw at the problem. Yes, it’s shite, we’re all miserable, screening and access to healthcare is impacted so people will present with more advanced stages of disease and more likely to die from them, there’s a mental health crisis, and people in the lower socioeconomic areas are suffering disproportionately as usual. Folk will lose their jobs and businesses. But the alternative is COVID spreads through the population leading to huge number of deaths and health conditions. The Spanish (1918) flu took two years to burn itself out. This isn’t unprecedented. TLDR; it’s shite but we don’t have any other option. by ryovyse (Sat 26th Sep 2020 12:25pm)
  • This guy is correct. We need to receive consent from parents and some cell lines were from aborted foetal tissue. The Catholic Church did speak out about this. It’s unfortunate he’s being downvoted. He could be a social worker, health visitor, or GP giving correct information here and folk are downvoting him. by ryovyse (Tue 29th Sep 2020 3:53pm)

  • I realise you’re frustrated and want to vent, but if you have a complaint about a letting agency you need to take it to the ombudsman. I complained about Rettie; my complaint was upheld and I received £300 in compensation. Hopefully highlights the issues to whoever is running the agency. by ryovyse (Tue 20th Oct 2020 7:16pm)
  • I don’t see how writing to the ombudsman will impact your deposit.. The safe deposit scheme is separate from the agency so that they can’t make spurious claims. by ryovyse (Tue 20th Oct 2020 7:36pm)
  • They ignored my requests for repairs. I had emails, texts, and photos saved for a 12 month period. They had 6 months to reply to the ombudsman and pay me compensation...they ignored the ombudsman for 6 months and paid me the money with no comment the day the 6 months was up. by ryovyse (Tue 20th Oct 2020 11:22pm)

  • It’s a closed, humid space with no ventilation. The virus won’t spend enough time in the heat when it’s breathed out of one person and in by the next. It’s a perfect place for the virus to spread. by ryovyse (Mon 9th Nov 2020 8:14pm)
  • Hey, I’m not sure why you can’t get through to your GP. You should be able to access and appointment over the phone. Maybe try emailing them or googling different phone numbers. If you’re worried about it at this very moment phone NHS 24 on 111. They might tell you to speak with your GP tomorrow, but at the very least they should give you the correct contact details. Good luck. by ryovyse (Thu 12th Nov 2020 6:03pm)

  • The guy in the video was taking about child prostitution, alleging that there were children being forced into prostitution in two of the flats he was standing outside (at 00:30am). He specifically mentioned children. If he, or anyone else has evidence of this they could report it to the police/social work/health etc. It’s not the same thing as human trafficking adults. Edit: always a bit fearful about posting too much info incase people work out who I am, but I can say I spend a lot of time in Govanhill and the guy is talking shite. by ryovyse (Fri 18th Dec 2020 7:37pm)
  • It’s not happening. There is no evidence of children being trafficked or sexual exploited in Govanhill. It’s a made up rumour that despite police investigation, there is still no evidence. There is a police group that looks at this - no evidence. There is a social work team that works with Roma - no evidence. A health team that works with Roma - no evidence. Some random fanny on the internet all of a sudden has evidence that he hasn’t and isn’t going to share? I know at least one of the families in the story you shared; these were adults trafficked, one reason being so non-EU adults could get visas. There is trafficking in Govanhill (as evidenced by your link), but no evidence of child sexual exploitation. There is trafficking in other areas in the UK as well, it’s a poverty problem, not a Govanhill or ‘foreign person’ one. Sex workers and labourers are often victims of trafficking and modern slavery. by ryovyse (Fri 18th Dec 2020 7:43pm)
  • You’re a moron. If I say there’s a boogeyman in Govanhill running around eating the pigeons and shitting gold nuggets, it doesn’t make it true. You need evidence, and so far, despite all the rhetoric online, there is none. The burden of proof is on the person making the allegations to provide evidence. That’s why you won’t believe my gold shitting pigeon eating story until you’ve seen it. by ryovyse (Fri 18th Dec 2020 7:48pm)

  • During the day I’d say contact your Health Visitor and they’d help you access a food bank, money advice to make a crisis grant application etc. If you have enough to last until tomorrow then call them now and leave a message. At this time your only option is to phone out of hours social work and be candid. If you are in the situation you say you are, you have no other option I’m afraid. https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/article/17272/Get-a-Social-Work-Service by ryovyse (Mon 18th Jan 2021 4:54pm)

  • No, they’re giving the housing association money to buy flats from slum landlords. by ryovyse (Wed 3rd Mar 2021 3:10pm)
  • An issue is that social housing won’t allow overcrowding. So several people sharing the rent in a slum landlords flat are going to be in trouble (won’t be able to afford rent) if all the flats move to social housing (eg. 6 adults in a private one bedroom flat for £500 won’t be allowed by the housing association). So some individuals will see the rent they have to pay go up as they can’t share with as many adults, even if the overall rent is the same between flats. by ryovyse (Wed 3rd Mar 2021 3:57pm)

  • Thanks for donating your pram. It would have made a big difference. Mums are often stuck in flats and won’t go outside often when they don’t have prams which worsens their isolation. • This guy is doing great work but you can see the emotional toll it’s taking on him. I really hope we’re going to look back on this in future and wonder why on earth safe consumption rooms weren’t a thing in Scotland in the early 21st century. I wrote a big rant about how the evidence is clear and we don’t value the people who are impacted negatively through drug use, but I deleted it. I realise most people on this sub agree with me. I guess I’ll just keep sending him money every once in a while and hope the Westminster government changes. by ryovyse (Thu 29th Apr 2021 6:06pm)

  • I’ve seen signs like the one you are mentioning; the issue is the food left out is also eaten by rats and mice so you end up with growing infestations of rodents as well as pigeons. I think it’s fair to ask people to withhold feeding these animals so not to attract them towards a park/home. by ryovyse (Thu 27th May 2021 9:45am)
  • If you had pigeons in your loft that cost several grand to clear/clean, you’d probably feel differently about it. When this happens the pigeons die everywhere, you find them at your flat door in tenements, there is pigeon excrement everywhere which can lead to diseases including salmonella and psittacosis and the rotting carcasses stink and lead to flies and maggots. They are gross and dangerous. by ryovyse (Thu 27th May 2021 10:39am)

  • Yep. Take lots of photographs and stuff before you move to show it’s clean. Include places they’ll look for dirt such as microwave, fixtures and fittings, skirting, door hinges, sink plug hole etc. etc. This way you should be at least able to negotiate the price down from a couple hundred pounds to a bit for touch ups or whatever of stuff is damaged. The tenancy deposit scheme is great. So many of us were ripped off by landlords.
