  • Not the best for booking, but for planning, rome2rio is amazing. Also, look at Ryanair flights from Prestwick. Much prefer it to the other airport (much quieter and you can take a train to it) and Ryanair will me you get cheap flights. by stzef (Mon 1st Jul 2019 1:26pm)

  • Aye but it's shite for the people who actually live here. And unlike Edinburgh, there's an abundance of train stations! by stzef (Fri 10th Dec 2021 9:38pm)
  • I mostly agree. You need an integrated mixed transport system and Glasgow buses are way too expensive and unreliable. Buses and cycle paths for short journeys Trams / trains/ subway for medium Trains for long by stzef (Sat 11th Dec 2021 12:17am)
  • Perhaps you know people with cars. The fact is that most people living in Glasgow dont own one but it affects us all. Not only does it look ugly, it destroyed some of the most beautiful parts of the city, separated the west end and the city centre, increased car dependancy, and contributes to a vast amount of pollution. Glasgow would be better without it. by stzef (Sat 11th Dec 2021 8:45am)
  • I live in Anderston so I know a little bit. Right by the bridge there was a fire at a factory so that accounts for some of it (cheapside street I think). The rest would have just can industrial buildings that fell out of use when industry collapsed and there wasn't enough money at the time to preserve it. I know it wasn't all industrial buildings as there were tennemants round there in old photos I've seen. The photos show an area in a pretty bad state so I would assume that would have just been torn down in "slum clearances". Most people would have been moved to tower blocks and new towns. Those are now being torn down so in the long run it would have probably been cheaper to just renovate the tennemants. Edit: this is what it used to look like http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/image.php?i=13566&r=2&t=4&x=1 by stzef (Sat 11th Dec 2021 8:52am)

  • Yeah I think that would be a good option. Streets like Byres Road which are surrounded by housing have survived quite well. For those who live in suburbs, the city centre is an inconvenience -- so it makes sense to convert more of the city centre into housing (there's definately the demand for it) which I suppose will help make it a more lively place. by stzef (Sun 12th Dec 2021 12:42pm)
  • Yeah - big fire, but the whole area was raised to the ground under misguided 'slum' clearances as well as the motorway being built right next to it. by stzef (Sun 12th Dec 2021 12:52pm)
  • To add insult to injury, the TKMaxx, Primark, and sports direct are all on the site of Pettigrew & Stephens which used to be a beautiful store. Image here: [https://images.app.goo.gl/swCc42KbEAL8kFU8A](https://images.app.goo.gl/swCc42KbEAL8kFU8A) by stzef (Sun 12th Dec 2021 1:17pm)
  • Because they went for short term solutions to save money which ended up costing more in the long run. The tenements were razed to the ground (destroying whole communities), high rises were put up in place, these became slums but without the community that existed before, they were then demolished, and now they're starting to rebuild housing at around the same density. Many of the demolished buildings were architecturally beautiful and were only made decrepit through sustained neglect by the government and council. If they'd been renovated and saved, I'm sure they'd be considered premium housing stock now. Even where the worst slums were (Gorbals for example) there was a lot of beauty that would be a thriving community today. • I think the perspective is different depending on where you live. I think converting more of the city centre into parking would do a lot of damage. For those that live in suburbs and lead a car dependent life, outer city malls will always be a better solution. A mixture of better public transport and moving more people into the city centre so urban density can be regained can probably create an audience for city centre shops? For perspective, I live near the mitchell library and I would never go to an out of city mall when I can just walk to shops. by stzef (Sun 12th Dec 2021 2:30pm)
  • And vote for who instead? Labour decimated and stripped this city and the tories want to build roads through the parks. Ive not lived here for that long but I've deffo seen a positive difference from when it was labour led to snp led. by stzef (Sun 12th Dec 2021 2:38pm)

  • Isn't that an outdated way of looking at things? Making space for cars means a less desirable city to visit. Most people in Glasgow dont have access to cars, and those that do and live in suburbs would rather go to our of town malls? by stzef (Sun 12th Dec 2021 4:52pm)

  • Crazy how wide the road is and how narrow the pavements are. by stzef (Mon 28th Mar 2022 2:16pm)
  • Yeah I have to cycle down this road a fair amount and it feels really dangerous. Big student population there too so fair to assume a decent uptake. As for byres road - I think it's getting redone this year. Thankfully. by stzef (Mon 28th Mar 2022 10:07pm)
  • looks like I'm the only person who thinks it's a great place to live... Trains are electric so no pollution from them. Fewer cars than other student hotspots like byres road. You're going to get addicts and stuff especially if you're near the 4 corners and there may be a fair amount of noise - but there's also a fair amount of police around there too if that's something that bothers you. Maybe not a place to retire to, but if you're young I'm sure you'll have a great time. Great for nights out too. by stzef (Mon 11th Jul 2022 9:28pm)
  • Can guarantee that a cycle courier will get you your food faster than a car 99% of the time. Orders that are long distance are automatically assigned to cars. Short distances orders usually go to bikes. For short distances, bikes can take advantage of shortcuts that are unavailable for cars and also beat traffic. Your food will be cold for 3 reasons. 1. The person didn't properly close their thermal bag or uses a shit thermal bag. Most of the time these are car drivers as if a cyclist doesn't close their bag, the food will fall out. 2. They're multi apping. They'll be running uber eats, deliveroo, just eat at the same time. They'll take another order on a different app before they've delivered their original order. It makes them more money, but it takes more time. 3. This is probably the most likely option. The restraunt left your food out. Places like McDonald's and GDK will have a tonne of orders and there won't be enough riders. Loads of food sits on a shelf - sometimes for up to half an hour. by stzef (Thu 14th Jul 2022 12:09am)
  • 100%. Cycle lanes aren't enough - full cycle networks are needed. I've seen the councils cycle network plan and it looks very promising. by stzef (Thu 14th Jul 2022 12:13am)

  • They're the largest independent bus operator in the UK. I'm sure they can just put the price of a single and return up somewhere! by stzef (Sun 17th Jul 2022 8:55pm)
  • I used to do a few deliveries on the weekend and a lot of the time, even a 1 quid tip here and then was the difference between making minimum wage or not. If you ride in peak hours you can make above minimum but those peaks don't last for long. If it's your full time job, you're probably making less than minimum wage most days. Sometimes it's just luck because it's not salaried - you're paid per order. Have gone a couple hours before without an order, which obviously you don't get anything for. I never expected a tip, but those people who did tip, I really did appreciate. by stzef (Wed 20th Jul 2022 9:08am)

  • The crazy thing is that Glasgow has really low rough sleeping numbers. Go to London, Paris, Berlin and there are whole tent cities set up and people walking around every street corner with obvious mental health issues. https://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/news/glasgow-news/less-five-sleeping-rough-glasgows-19970596.amp by stzef (Sun 7th Aug 2022 9:42am)
  • Lmao it's fine. Glasgow used to be really dodgy, now it's a bit less dodgy but still a bit. Anyone who says different is just looking through rose tinted glasses. I read a book from the 80s/90s(?) that was talking about the decline of sauchiehall street. People thinking the city is shit is pretty much a hobby. Most metrics that aren't anecdotal show that Glasgow is doing better than before. Schools, crime, business, infrastructure, poverty, etc etc. by stzef (Sun 7th Aug 2022 9:40am)

  • You could report a bin being full on the council app. Sometimes they fill up quicker than scheduled - it's impossible to completely keep track. Also, it's up to individuals not to litter if a bin is full. They're everywhere, find another one. If you can't find one, take it home. Some countries don't have public bins at all and don't have litter issues. by stzef (Mon 18th Sep 2023 4:49pm)
