  • TL;DR - have a homeless friend with no family to go to, he can't get hold of a flat because of coronavirus. He's in my flat for now but I'm in breach of my tenancy agreement and don't want to cause trouble, does anyone know of an organisation that can help him? . Not sure if this is the best place to post but I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a friend [M/23] who was made homeless a few weeks back because his brother he was living with has lung issues and didn't want to risk living with anyone during the pandemic. The problem with this is he can't go anywhere. He spent a week sleeping in his car until I took him in but if my landlord finds out I'm keeping an extra tenant in here he would (rightfully) kick me out as I'd be in breach of the tenancy agreement then we're both in hot water. He has the money to rent a flat but because of COVID-19 he can't meet a landlord or do viewings. He has no parents, just the brother who sent him off, so he can't even live with family. Given the pandemic situation, does anyone know of any charities or organisations who can help him? He's familiar with Glasgow in general and Dumbartonshire. by toastiesandtea (Sat 18th Apr 2020 9:12am)
  • Thank you for your response! by toastiesandtea (Sat 18th Apr 2020 12:33pm)
  • Thank you kindly for this comment! Yes, he is employed full time usually and will continue to have his job after the pandemic, he's just not at work right now as it's not essential. I'll mention Mansion St to him, thank you for this tip by toastiesandtea (Sat 18th Apr 2020 12:36pm)
  • Righto - I'll pass that info on to him, many thanks! by toastiesandtea (Sat 18th Apr 2020 3:21pm)
  • My landlord lives literally across the hall from me, you see. We're in the same block of flats by toastiesandtea (Sat 18th Apr 2020 5:46pm)
  • I wholeheartedly believe you when you say I can't be evicted, I know the government has put protections in place and all but (as daft as it sounds) I get on with them great as both a neighbour and landlord and I have been in this flat for four years. I would just hate to wreck the relationship/trust we have. I will definitely consider just asking and explain the situation if I can't get far with Shelter Scotland. Thank you! by toastiesandtea (Sat 18th Apr 2020 6:39pm)
  • Speaking from my experience as a student, I got on fine in the Gorbals, anything west end is good (e.g. Partick) and so is Cowcaddens. I haven't had much experience elsewhere but I imagine other commenters can fill in the gaps there. However, Springburn and Dennistoun are cheap for a reason and I'd avoid it if possible. I'm paying £385 p/month for a fully furnished flat but I've also had a break in and several other attempts this summer alone. My car has been keyed and I've lost two wheelie bins to bored teens setting them on fire. by toastiesandtea (Sun 5th Jul 2020 1:38am)
  • Mine got keyed in Springburn, the little shits must have sensed it was under a week old at the time. Hope you haven't had more incidents! by toastiesandtea (Sun 5th Jul 2020 11:46am)
  • If by 'one of those nurses' you mean someone who's doing their job then yeah. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to be tired and overworked all whilst feeling constantly unsafe because of idiots who won't do the decent thing. If you have gone to the effort of getting a mask at least wear it right, there's no point in a chin hammock. by toastiesandtea (Tue 14th Jul 2020 1:02am)
  • I've DMed you with a description of my missing one! by toastiesandtea (Tue 14th Jul 2020 3:51am)
  • A few students at my college told me about this! They said to me (not from Glasgow) that it was when you got an encased pie (e.g. Bells scotch pie) and slightly squished it into a roll. Some even add a blob of gravy on. One of the three argued bread would count too, but the others strongly disagreed and called him a nonce for that. by toastiesandtea (Mon 10th Aug 2020 1:45pm)
  • I must say I haven't heard of that term either but it makes sense, it's what it says on the box by toastiesandtea (Mon 10th Aug 2020 6:04pm)
  • DELETED I can't imagine the two together, seems very heavy and carby haha. I'm not from Glasgow though, that might have a lot to do with it by toastiesandtea (Mon 10th Aug 2020 9:40pm)

They also have an [Instagram](https://instagram.com/ecoladandlass?igshid=fv7utb79ripi) which they update regularly on what stock they have. by toastiesandtea (Sun 16th Aug 2020 9:49pm)
  • That's genuinely brilliant, I was able to tell what was what before seeing your pinned comment which is pretty impressive for Lego! by toastiesandtea (Mon 17th Aug 2020 1:54pm)
  • To think there's people in this country that are adamant that immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers are getting "too much" and are "taking our jobs". What generous benefits! /s This poor woman and her child were left unsupported. Absolutely disgusting and shameful, I hope the government will learn from this. by toastiesandtea (Tue 25th Aug 2020 9:29pm)
  • Oh I fully agree - I do think that the people need to use their voting powers wisely as well as their freedom to protest and protect. The public undoubtedly can do something. What I meant by that statement is that the government should be held accountable and never let anyone slip through the net in such a way ever again. There's a poor baby boy out there without a mother now and it's unacceptable. by toastiesandtea (Tue 25th Aug 2020 10:37pm)
  • Of course, but I do also think race and nationality has unfortunately played its part here. This would have never happened if she was Glasgow born and raised which makes this situation even more devastating. by toastiesandtea (Tue 25th Aug 2020 10:45pm)
  • I didn't downvote you, and you appear as having '1' as a score to me so I'm not sure where that's coming from. I was merely expressing that class and race divides were sad and likely played a part in her neglect. by toastiesandtea (Tue 25th Aug 2020 10:55pm)
  • I couldn't agree more. How inexcusable, this poor boy is without a mother over cruelties that should have been left behind in the dark ages. No one should starve to death in any country, much less a first world one. How horrible that she likely came here for a better life. by toastiesandtea (Tue 25th Aug 2020 11:11pm)
  • Precisely. It's horrible enough that people starve in any country! What excuse does the UK have for it to be happening on our doorstep? We can afford all sorts of ridiculous things when we want to but we can't feed mouths? It's disgusting. X by toastiesandtea (Tue 25th Aug 2020 11:54pm)
  • Signed! Thank you for sharing - could you possibly send me a link via DM that I can share of this petition? For some reason I can't copy and paste from the comment! by toastiesandtea (Wed 26th Aug 2020 12:01am)
  • Even if the death wasn't through starvation, the point still stands that her death brought to light the cruelties she endured whilst being in the UK and that included a lack of food - she reportedly used food banks and help from charitable organisations. Whilst we cannot jump to conclusions the picture looks grim nonetheless and we cannot let what she was subjected to slide even if it was, say, of natural causes. She was still neglected and left to fend for herself with a baby. by toastiesandtea (Wed 26th Aug 2020 12:00am)
  • But in this case that's directly due to her mother's negligence, not the government's. A mother leaving her child to go to the pub is child abuse, a mother dying next to her child isn't. by toastiesandtea (Wed 26th Aug 2020 11:10am)
  • I agree that they're both governmental failures but regarding race I was referring to immigration and asylum seekers. That girl was failed and I'm equally angry about that, how she was let down to such an extent is beyond me, but I would regard it as a separate government issue. Regarding immigration, people who arrive from New Zealand, Denmark and Canada are greeted *very* differently to those from Uganda, Syria and Pakistan which suggests a race issue. For things like child protection I do agree with you that it's not as straightforward as race, it's also incredibly classist and all about saving money. Services would have considered it 'cheaper' and easier to not intervene and save that girl - equally disgusting. Neither issue has an excuse, both need resolved and show a gaping problem in our welfare and society. by toastiesandtea (Wed 26th Aug 2020 3:05pm)
  • Oh I agree that facts matter - I hope it doesn't come across like I think it's irrelevant, but the cause of death doesn't take away from the situation she and her baby were abandoned in. As far as I'm concerned even if it was health related and unavoidable her tragedy brought forward some important things people have looked over. Even if Mercy was *alive* she would still be in poverty, she would still be relying on food banks, she would still have had her right to work taken away and would still be living in a dire situation. That's the part people are taking issue with. by toastiesandtea (Wed 26th Aug 2020 3:10pm)
  • Hi, I addressed a similar comment further down this chain. I worry that my comment was worded in a way that makes it sound as if I think Scots aren't also prone to being left behind. My reference towards race specifically relates to immigration. What I was saying was that immigrants that are from the likes of Canada or Sweden would never be in this situation. This disconnect occurs usually towards those coming from the likes of Syria, Zambia, etc It's not that I don't think Scots/white people get left behind, I think there is *also* a giant social class divide (I've experienced it myself, the SQA grades situation is proof it wasn't in my head). However these situations are apples and oranges - both government related but separate issues altogether. by toastiesandtea (Wed 26th Aug 2020 5:11pm)
  • This is brilliant work! You're really talented, thank you for sharing :) by toastiesandtea (Mon 14th Sep 2020 10:58pm)
  • Agreed, I've only ever lived in East and North and I've yet to stay in a tenement that *doesn't* stink of piss and decay. It all builds character though! by toastiesandtea (Mon 5th Oct 2020 5:33pm)
  • I figured they were talking about family, friends and significant others. I can't lie, having a parent into drugs definitely didn't give me the jump start I could have done with. by toastiesandtea (Fri 9th Oct 2020 5:26pm)
  • Wow, what time in the morning was this taken at? Looks lovely, nice shot :) by toastiesandtea (Tue 27th Oct 2020 1:43pm)
  • Great, thank you! I'll have to try being out and about at this time for my morning walks by toastiesandtea (Tue 27th Oct 2020 2:12pm)
  • Are you really that miserable? Unless you have solid evidence for such horrible defamation I'd suggest you keep your mouth shut, especially as the poor woman is unable to defend herself. Furthermore, this is an update post on her son - one day in the near future he'll be able to Google his mother's name, the last thing the boy needs are comments like these popping up. Come on, have some respect man. by toastiesandtea (Fri 30th Oct 2020 7:47pm)
  • I've shared her post to my Instagram story in hopes someone knows her address in order to call the police. Here's hoping shame will hit her but I seriously doubt it given the blatant posting in the first place. by toastiesandtea (Fri 30th Oct 2020 9:11pm)
  • Do you not need an address or contact info for the person you're reporting? If not then I'll happily do it, but I did assume you would by toastiesandtea (Fri 30th Oct 2020 10:02pm)
  • That article actually says there was no history of alcohol abuse, so I'm not sure what you mean. Also, there's a time and a place to say these things and an update post of her son isn't it. by toastiesandtea (Fri 30th Oct 2020 11:30pm)
  • I swear I'm not trying to be funny, but I'm not sure what you're trying to prove. The toxicology report stated there was no sign of alcohol abuse, I'm going to take that over someone with "inside" knowledge talking to the Daily Mail, who then get quoted by the Scotsman. I'm not trying to be pedantic, I just know to take these things with a pinch of salt. But putting *all* that aside, that shouldn't matter. I couldn't care less whether she was or wasn't an alcoholic. The point still stands that this isn't the place, and that it's disrespectful for her son and partners sake. by toastiesandtea (Fri 30th Oct 2020 11:47pm)
  • >A lot of you seem to really believe in all this COVID stuff Are you for fucking real? I literally just lost a neighbour to it the other day - a 29 year old asthmatic. She left behind a husband and three kids all because a random local tosser hosted a 50th birthday party when they shouldn't have. And honestly? I hope her death *does* weigh on their conscious because now there are three kids who are going to grow up mother-less all because they wanted some music and cake *just like the arseholes in this video*. by toastiesandtea (Sat 31st Oct 2020 10:59am)
  • And? The tramp deserves it by toastiesandtea (Sat 31st Oct 2020 11:11am)
  • The toxicology report said there was *no* evidence of alcohol abuse by toastiesandtea (Sat 31st Oct 2020 3:31pm)
  • Well no, considering Scotland doesn't even have the highest level in the UK - it's Wales that has the [highest level of poverty](https://www.jrf.org.uk/data/poverty-levels-and-trends-england-wales-scotland-and-northern-ireland#:~:text=Across%20the%20four%20parts%20of,the%20rest%20of%20the%20UK.), much less in West Europe. by toastiesandtea (Sun 8th Nov 2020 9:59pm)
  • I moved down to Glasgow from Skye and I'm loving it! I hope to spend the rest of my life hear to be quite honest. But whenever I tell locals where I came from all I hear are Glasgweigans telling me they wished they lived in Skye! It's very funny, we always want what we can't have by toastiesandtea (Mon 9th Nov 2020 2:20pm)
  • For some reason it won't load on my phone properly (possibly due to it being a pdf), but there is a report out there called 'Let Glasgow Flourish' which found that Glasgow's life expectancy for both men and women has improved over the past 30 years. Neil Andrew's claims are pretty biased, as well as incorrect and heavily exaggerated. The fact is that Glasgow's most impoverished 10% have a significantly higher life expectany than the average sub-Saharan which makes his point completely moot. Poverty in Glasgow (including housing, life expectancy, alcohol abuse and drug abuse) has been an issue for a long time - long before the SNP came into power and it can't be solved in a handful years. I'm not part of the brigade that thinks the SNP is perfect, far from it (I actually vote Green), but it seems pointless to say they have a part in something that they don't. The SNP have had their failures but this isn't one of them. by toastiesandtea (Mon 9th Nov 2020 5:56pm)
  • Of course, and thank you for showing the same respect :) by toastiesandtea (Mon 9th Nov 2020 11:05pm)

  • I haven't checked farmfoods, that's worth a try. I've so far tried Lidl, Aldi, Poundland, Sainsbury's, Tesco's, ASDAs and B&M but no luck as of yet. Maybe they just weren't selling well? by toastiesandtea (Sun 6th Dec 2020 11:43am)
  • Curses, that looked super promising until I saw the delivery price to the Hebrides. Ty! by toastiesandtea (Sun 6th Dec 2020 11:40am)
  • Yes, I reckon that's my best option here. Like another commenter suggested I could just go to the bakery shop or something. It is possible that it's only really made for exports and I'm being awkward haha by toastiesandtea (Sun 6th Dec 2020 11:54am)
  • >maybe it's one of these ones that does really well abroad and they mostly just export it? That's a good point, I know it's supposedly made the way it is with the Japanese market in mind. I believe the Japanese didn't like their teeth being glued together by the caramel wafers, so they made the chocolate ones. Could literally just be exported now or something? by toastiesandtea (Sun 6th Dec 2020 11:51am)
  • A shoot, thank you for the inside info! Very much appreciated by toastiesandtea (Sun 6th Dec 2020 12:28pm)
  • That sounds more promising, I might look into that too, thank you! by toastiesandtea (Sun 6th Dec 2020 12:34pm)
  • Haha absolutely, go for the chocolate bars but stay for the pie! by toastiesandtea (Sun 6th Dec 2020 12:54pm)
  • Well what are you waiting for? A Tunnocks road trip it is! by toastiesandtea (Sun 6th Dec 2020 12:57pm)
  • That's a point, I could probably just call and ask? It would seem judging by the comments doing it via Tunnocks somehow is the best way by toastiesandtea (Sun 6th Dec 2020 12:55pm)
  • Ahh, I see! It's a shame you're so far down. Maybe have it as a Christmas dinner alternative? Haha by toastiesandtea (Sun 6th Dec 2020 1:04pm)
  • Haha, I am indeed! My family in the Hebrides go insane for these wee guys and trying to get hold of them is a nightmare. Fingers crossed, and thank you! by toastiesandtea (Sun 6th Dec 2020 3:16pm)
  • Oh fingers crossed! Hopefully they were just out when I last looked. Also, thank you kindly (: by toastiesandtea (Sun 6th Dec 2020 3:15pm)
  • Ahh, I've only looked in Maryhill and Springburn. I'm guessing it's a bigger Lidl? And thank you - I'll pop in and grab some, a *big* thank you! by toastiesandtea (Mon 7th Dec 2020 10:37am)
  • Oh fantastic! I'll have to pop down tomorrow because I'm only a handful of minutes away from there on the bus, I didn't know they had a shop. Thank you for letting me know! by toastiesandtea (Fri 11th Dec 2020 4:34pm)
  • Oh that would be super convenient for me, I'm only a short bus ride from there - thank you so much for letting me know! by toastiesandtea (Fri 11th Dec 2020 4:33pm)
  • Awe, that really is lovely! I do like the way our gritters are named, nostalgia feels are great. Hope it eases up tomorrow (: by toastiesandtea (Tue 9th Feb 2021 12:39am)

  • My area came up as the most deprived 10% and I'd agree with that. In saying that it won't be accurate for everyone, but from what I know of my area's unemployment rates, state of housing, the general things I see, etc, it checks out. by toastiesandtea (Wed 17th Feb 2021 11:35pm)

  • It's the fact that Glasgow's decline was very much intentional and calculated that's sickening. By starving it from funding, they essentially pulled the plug on so many people's lives. The effects of the class segregation can still be very much felt today, it's sad. by toastiesandtea (Fri 26th Feb 2021 11:41am)
  • >I'm starting to wonder if that Thatcher might not have been so great. Ha! Now we just need to get other parts of the UK to wonder too... Aye, it is quite sinister. There never should be *any* managed declines and yet here's an article talking about one that's had a knock-on effect on a city for decades. Almost sounds bloody dystopian but nope, just the reality of being from a first-world, highly developed, G7 nation. Makes me really think about what other countries go through seeing as the UK is one of the better countries to be from in the world. by toastiesandtea (Fri 26th Feb 2021 12:19pm)
  • Naturally, but some have a wider gap than others and Glasgow has one of the worst gaps in the UK. Then, as a country, the UK has one of the worst wealth gaps [in the developing world](https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.ft.com/content/7204c062-1047-11ea-a225-db2f231cfeae). by toastiesandtea (Fri 26th Feb 2021 4:11pm)

So quick to pat ourselves on the back as the "world's friendliest city", yet when a teenager goes missing people are quick to make fun of their appearance because they're black.
