  • No, I'm not coming here through NTU. I was actually rejected by NTU for their Library Studies NTU program, so I applied directly with Strathclyde for their MSc in Library Science and was accepted late last year. by Eamonsieur (Thu 28th May 2020 6:08pm)
  • That's good to hear. Everything I've read and watched about Glasgow so far points to it being a nicer place than the more popular academic cities in the UK, so I'm really looking forward to experiencing it. by Eamonsieur (Thu 28th May 2020 6:10pm)
  • That's good to hear! I was worried that I might have to "stay with my own kind" to feel safe in Glasgow, but from what everyone here is saying, looks like that won't be necessary. I have never believed in socializing only within my own ethnic group while abroad, so this gives me hope. by Eamonsieur (Fri 29th May 2020 6:08am)
  • If you want to take graduation pictures in a campus that's older than most countries and looks like Hogwarts, UG all the way. If you like the idea of a campus in the middle of town right next to shops and bars, then Strathclyde. by Eamonsieur (Thu 16th Jul 2020 10:10am)
  • [Spanish Flu was an aggressive strain of H1N1](https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/1918-pandemic-h1n1.html). It didn’t completely die out, but became seasonal. The pandemic ended because it managed to kill off everyone who was vulnerable and/or not socially distancing at the time. by Eamonsieur (Sun 19th Jul 2020 8:07am)

  • I did my undergrad in Buffalo, New York. According to the uni brochure, the campus was in the “safe” part of town. What nobody told me was the cheapest dorm was adjacent to low income housing, which was prime gang territory. Every night around 2am I could hear at least a dozen gunshots. The gangbangers never directly threatened students, but you got the feeling the area wasn’t exactly safe. by Eamonsieur (Sat 1st Aug 2020 3:18pm)
  • You can’t go in right now. You have to be dead first. by Eamonsieur (Sat 1st Aug 2020 3:27pm)
  • Yeah, Buffalo is quite a contrast to the image of suburban America that we have from watching movies. It’s all grime and urban decay, the product of a city that’s had its industries taken away and failing to adapt to changes in the economy. You can see this most strikingly in the number of abandoned factories and warehouses as you drive down Main street into downtown. Glad you had a good time with your wings at Anchor, although the locals would tell you that Duffs has the superior wings. by Eamonsieur (Fri 14th Aug 2020 6:38am)
  • All the foreign uni students that moved here in the beginning of this month and are serving 14-day quarantines in their rooms definitely have experience with this right now. by Eamonsieur (Sun 20th Sep 2020 1:51pm)
  • Strathy is having in-person labs and lectures in staggered attendance. Half the class will attend on even days and the other half on odd days. It might to be to being fully online if conditions worsen, but for now word from the admin is the campus is open. by Eamonsieur (Mon 21st Sep 2020 5:23am)

  • [Student Roost St Mungo's](https://www.studentroost.co.uk/locations/glasgow/st-mungos) is about 5 minutes walk from Strathy and their cheapest rooms are around 150 quid/week. • I'm a 31M Library Science grad student starting my first semester at Strathclyde in September. I used to play v3.5 DnD regularly in high school, and dabbled in Pathfinder a bit, and I'm looking for people I can homebrew with. This will be my first time ever in Glasgow, and I love visiting interesting places when I travel to a new town, so cafe hopping will be right up my alley. • Can you afford to postpone your studies to the next intake so you have adequate time to recover? Even after you can physically walk again, physiotherapy can potentially take another 2-4 months, so realistically your recovery period is about six months. I was in a similar predicament to yours. I'm an international grad student at Strathclyde and was slated to attend classes last year, but about a month before I was to fly there, I took a fall and tore my PCL. Doctors said I couldn't walk for two months, and I would have to find my own physiotherapy in Glasgow, so I decided to defer to 2021. by Eamonsieur (Wed 4th Aug 2021 7:07am)

  • I've got quite a bit of experience with rain where I'm from. It rains nearly every day here at the equator, but it's always warm. How cold does it get when it rains in Glasgow? by Eamonsieur (Sun 8th Aug 2021 3:58pm)
  • How's the humidity like during and after a rainstorm? Where I'm from, after the skies clear, the sun comes up immediately and turns all the water droplets in the air to hot vapour. by Eamonsieur (Sun 8th Aug 2021 3:56pm)
  • Is the humidity such that I don’t need chapstick and skin cream in the winter? I remember one defining feature of US winters was the lip cracking and skin peeling from the dryness in the air. by Eamonsieur (Sun 8th Aug 2021 8:58pm)

  • People who lived through such times went out of their way to shelter their children from the suffering and hardship. If all your male relatives went off to war and never came back, you’d try your best to teach your children that war is bad. That’s a big part of why France did so poorly in WW2. A fifth of their male population was wiped out in WW1, and in the 20-odd years after, the survivors made damn sure to never indulge in it again. by Eamonsieur (Sat 6th Nov 2021 2:26pm)

  • It's definitely a correlation thing. You have a subset of people who carry swiss army knives and short legal length slipjoints for EDC or utility purposes, and they aren't the sort to go looking for trouble. I don't think the statement is meant to imply that anyone carrying a knife automatically makes them more physically vulnerable to a knife injury, just the kind of people to carry knives as weapons are more likely to put themselves in violent situations. by Eamonsieur (Sat 15th Jan 2022 1:39am)

  • Jeez, is it so hard to have a little understanding? Try to see it from their perspective. Your name is William. You are a human being, and a proud Glaswegian like half-a-million others. Beyond your control you were born into a shitty family with a shitty dad, who himself was born into a shitty family with a shitty dad. In fact you come from a long line of shitty dads. Your entire genetic lineage is a joke of which you, for the time being at least, are the soggy, botched punchline - until you spurt your lukewarm seed into some unwitting girl's eggsack and the joke lumbers on. Your world seems to turn slower than everyone else's. You begin to wonder if the conversations your family have around the dinner table are the same as the ones your friends have. You watch your father slurp baked beans into his mouth like a 54-year-old baby. You begin to wonder if you will grow up to be like him. You suppress this pain. You, James and Johnboy go up the park most nights to work diligently on your soon-to-be-chronic alcohol problem. This is both a coping mechanism, an informal coming-of-age ceremony, and a group bonding exercise - all it does is exacerbate your steadily blooming anger disorder. Your dad knows, and you know he knows. You want him to intervene. He says nothing. But every summer your community pulls back the curtains and lets some light in. For you, this is Christmas. You dust off your white shirt. You pick up your drum. And for a precious few glorious hours you get to stand before the world and proclaim "I matter. I am not a joke. I have a voice and I will be heard" as the fat, diabetes-ridden, flushed-red faces of your extended family look on with manic glee. They too are afraid. Together you sing the songs of your fathers. And for this all-too-brief moment, you almost manage to believe. That you are a vital cog in the machine of humanity, and that when you die you will leave a gap in the ranks that cannot be filled. Sadly for you, that's total shite. Let them march. It's literally all they have. by Eamonsieur (Sat 2nd Jul 2022 9:55am)

  • I used to drink heavily in my 20s but developed chronic gout and now a single can of beer is enough to trigger a gout attack. I replaced alcohol with water. Sounds boring, but the physical act of drinking helped me to ease my cravings and it gave me something to do with my mouth. I replaced getting stupid drunk time with tv shows and anime. I found that shows are more fun to watch sober, and I actually remember what I watched when I’m done. If you want a good place to start, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is a pretty good primer. by Eamonsieur (Mon 18th Jul 2022 6:59am)
  • The only way for small boutique shops like what you're describing to survive is to be able to afford to pay the lease, which means they need to serve high amounts of traffic or sell incredibly expensive products to make up for low turnover. Since it's unrealistic to expect landlords to slash rents for downtown shops, the only businesses that can realistically survive here are big, high traffic, high turnover stores like Gap and Apple. The days of small interesting boutique shops in a busy downtown thoroughfare are largely over. by Eamonsieur (Sun 7th Aug 2022 3:26am)
  • Perhaps it's for the best. Downtown shopping areas in cities around the world are seeing a general decline because modern societies have largely moved away from in-person shopping as a social activity. The need for online marketing and e-commerce for many modern storefronts to survive has largely done away with the novelty of shops without an online presence. Even shops with a large storefront may have a more consistent online catalog, so there is no advantage to engage in B&M sales. by Eamonsieur (Sun 7th Aug 2022 3:47am)

  • I saw Alex Ferguson at the Lidl in Giffnock yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a fanny and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Mars bars in his hands without paying. The lass at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly. by Eamonsieur (Fri 19th Aug 2022 4:44pm)

  • Don’t just get a big coat. Dress in layers so you can add or remove levels of insulation depending on your environment. Long underwear in silk or polyester should be the base layer to wick sweat from your skin and keep you dry, followed by an insulation layer like a sweater or flannel shirt to trap heat, followed by a hard or soft shell rain jacket to keep water out. A system of layers like this is better than just one big coat over a t-shirt, because if the weather suddenly warms up a bit and you take your big coat off, you’ll be totally unprotected against any sudden chilly breezes.
