  • 1) On the 4 bus to uni one day, I had a man sit beside me and gradually stroke my thigh higher and higher. I froze and was terrified he would get off the bus with me. Didn't have a phone then and didn't know what to do. This was the middle of the day. 2) Walking down Hope Street, a man tapped my shoulder from behind to make me stop walking and tell me how great my bum looked in these jeans. I widened my eyes, turned to carry on walking AND HE DID IT AGAIN! This was the middle of the day. 3) In a club, a man came right up behind my friend and leaned in to lick her neck, which he would have done if I hadn't pushed him away. 4) Had arse grabbed in clubs by men 3 or 4 times. But this was over 8 years living here so this certainly isn't the worst city for it. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Wed 10th Aug 2022 6:47am)

  • You can't know for sure of course, what actually happened. I'd probably, if I cared enough lol, go back through all their reviews and see if, in general, the owner responded maturely to other complaints. If they say NO YOU to every criticism, I'd probably be more sceptical about this one. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Mon 3rd Oct 2022 12:14pm)
  • Well the reason I asked is because I like going out for dinner so 'just eat in' isn't great advice. Also I don't really like eating after 7ish so I thought I'd look for some childfree places, hence the post, rather than just wait until all the kids are asleep. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Mon 3rd Oct 2022 12:17pm)

  • What would you want to hear from your lawyer before you go down, to help prepare you? My husband's defending a guy just now who's never done time before but if convicted will definitely go down and he's understandably shitting himself. • If you google service charge though, that IS the definition. It's not for tips. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Fri 23rd Dec 2022 10:02am)
  • https://centreoftherapy.org/therapy Go here. If you're a student or on low income you get significantly reduced rates for therapy. Anyone can get part qualified ones who charge less too. I've been twice, for around 12 weeks at a time, for CBT. If you completely open yourself to it and ask yourself hard questions, it can change your life. To this day, doing CBT is what I'm proudest of myself for. Good luck. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Fri 23rd Dec 2022 12:17pm)

  • 'don’t see why they’d lie about not being tipped' In zero-hours places the employees often have little wherewithal to fight unfair practices. Managers giving the most hours to people they like is one example. Being overly truthful about not getting your tips would get around so easily and could lead to you bring badly treated. Plus I don't know how wait staff would know if they were getting the full 10% of what's taken. The only people who would know would be those doing the till takings at the end of the night. Great to hear about that bill though! by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Tue 21st Mar 2023 6:48pm)

  • Teaching is good but I would recommend you do something else first. People who go school-teacher training-school typically don't have much life perspective to offer kids and usually get sucked very easily into complaining about the job and being negative because they don't realise the job is full of perks that are uncommon in other normal jobs. P.E. teaching is an absolutely sweet deal. There's virtually no marking until you get to Higher, kids typically like your subject and going for promotion is so much easier than if you teach other subjects because you have so much less to do. A high proportion of deputes, e.g. are P.E. teachers. Plus, you get paid the exact same, a good wage, as a multilinguist or a science teacher. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Wed 5th Apr 2023 8:36pm)
  • Take their responsibility? I'd imagine it's more like they somehow DON'T feel it's a 19-yr old's (or anyone's) 'responsibility' to die and / or support others being murdered because some people want to go into countries to steal their resources and control them. Imagine these crazy people that don't want controlled into utter mindless obedience so they can be used as cannon fodder to further the evil political aims of a few people. SO IRRESPONSIBLE. The 'protection' you speak of is danger money. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Thu 6th Apr 2023 6:44am)

  • I went to Coe Hair for the first time 2 days ago and the woman next to me was grey with med length hair and getting blonde in. The hairdresser was explaining what worked best with the grey, as in not trying to cover all of it but getting colour in that just highlighted the silvery coolness of some of the grey. The woman was really happy with it and was a regular customer. The stylist had short brown hair and was more homely looking than the other stylists. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Sun 9th Apr 2023 8:51am)

  • This is a great outlook. I'd add a disclaimer though in that they should ensure that you are paid what you would otherwise be paid, especially these days when a much higher proportion of people are struggling to put food on the table. If they don't, I wouldn't feel at all guilty about ignoring a citation. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Fri 21st Apr 2023 10:18am)

  • You're aware- this is a good start. So now, you focus on yourself. This next bit of advice may seem not to match your question, but can you please make sure you do not get anybody pregnant? It is a path I see all too often as a secondary teacher. Kids leave school without much direction, are bored, and are normal horny teens coming from our very inadequate, as regards sex education, system. Or sometimes, babies seem like a great idea, until you realise what everybody does- that it's much harder and a more limiting commitment than you think. Then your own life takes a back seat and you set yourself back more years before getting started. So, can you now 1) see a careers advisor (Skills Development Scotland- ask your school) and try to work out together a) what you enjoy b) what you're good at and c) how you can get started. Please be aware that it would be much, much better to focus on these things just now, while you will get a lot of support (because of your young age). College would be a good environment because there will be a lot of people in your situation. Try and avoid being sucked into the armed forces- they tend to prey on the fear of people without many qualifications and will love bomb you with the promise of adventure, certainty, a built-in group of pals, but it's a highly controlled life and you'll learn to think it's OK and aspirational to be part of an organisation that literally murders people. Don't be afraid to dream big and definitely do not write off any jobs you think you'd enjoy because of your lack of Highers. If you, e.g. want to be a doctor, yes it will take years- but it takes everybody years. By the time you're a doctor at age 30 and the real fun of life begins, no one, least of all you, will give a fuck that you had to go to college to get Highers at 17. There is a path to every job at any age (unless maybe you're 90)- it just might have a couple more right and left turns and roundabouts than some others. You have PLENTY time. You may not have had the best guidance on subject choices and / or encouragement from those around you towards a suitable path but you are still super young and can take responsibility now. It seems so significant now that you don't have lots of qualifications but you will laugh looking back at that thought at age 25. Just take a breath, make a long-term plan with your careers advisor and do the next right thing. It will feel amazing to be following a real plan and it SHOULD take a few years- that's normal. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Wed 24th May 2023 4:25am)

  • Ah well. I'm off to see it today at 2.30 so I'll see what I think. Sounds bad but. I'd say some of the big theatre stuff is great. Kidnapped a few weeks ago was terrific, in my opinion ♡. Streetcar the ballet was also good. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Sat 27th May 2023 10:39am)
  • I thought the opening scene was cool and 'that' scene 2/3 way through. I like the set design. It was very unimaginative. And the acting WAS bad. Same tone of voice all the way though, just shouting at each other, seemingly saying their lines as quickly as possible, and, especially the dad, not speaking clearly. There was a bit which lasted about 20 mins where Sheila was whining about 'do you not see what we've done?!' and rhe parents were like 'lol' which I swear was the same dialogue over and over. It's such a well-established play- you'd think someone would be able to do something different with it now. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Sun 28th May 2023 6:12am)

  • A visit to the police museum. The 2 chaps who run it are ex-cops and have a brilliant collection of stuff and they are very chatty. http://www.policemuseum.org.uk/ The Kelvingrove museum. Go at 1pm and you will hear the church organ being played in the centre area. Next to the Kelvingrove is Glasgow University- ancient and traditional. You can probably get a tour. The red bus tour will take you round interesting locations in the west end, including the Kelvingrove and Glasgow University, and the audio tour will be available en français. Traditional Scottish restaurant is Ardnamurchan on Hope Street. I have not been but people say it is nice. A walk from Glasgow Green along the River Clyde to the Transport museum. Cross the bridges, back and forth, to get some good pictures. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Sun 28th May 2023 1:48pm)
  • Criminal defence lawyers are extremely overworked and underpaid in Scotland. Your experience won't be that different if you go to another one. Feeling unheard is common. They only want to know what can be used as evidence- they don't have time to chat. Is it sherriff court or high court? If the latter, the lawyer will instruct counsel anyway, same for if it's sherriff and jury, so you will have someone more skilled and with more time to listen to you. Could you tell us the charges? We could probably offer more help if we knew the nature of them. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Sat 3rd Jun 2023 8:28am)

  • I'm a native speaker and, having looked over the materials for An Cùrsa Inntrigidh, the distance learning course, I can say it'll get you making the greatest progress in the shortest time. I would avoid going for private tutoring as it's expensive, many of them are not native speakers and their Gaelic and pronunciation can be very hit or miss. Whereas at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig you have the best-informed people at your fingertips, who do not charge a lot for what they offer. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Mon 26th Jun 2023 11:20am)

  • No they are different languages, though ours comes from yours! Just a few words in common and the sound is really different. Gaelige is very soft whereas Gaelic is guttural. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Mon 26th Jun 2023 12:30pm)
  • Yes, as I used to before I knew any better.. but PLENTY native speakers work there who are experts on the language. The pish-ripping comes from a historical and systematic shaming of the language, which oppressed the communities who spoke it so much that speaker numbers reduced, which in turn left us with a lasting sense of being isolated and special and needing to protect and maintain the language, much of which is a valid need. The language has been mostly passed down orally and many people, including my father's generation, spoke it- they didn't really write it. To this day, his Gaelic spelling and grammar is weak even though it's his first language. So when SMO came along and started teaching people grammar and some needful new words in accordance with modern times (i.e. created the word 'ball-coise' instead of simply using 'football'), this felt like a threat. Having our own word in Gaelic where we had previously had to use a word in another language felt like a threat. My dad feels it is more authentic to ask his pals 'Am faca tu football a-raoir?' I disagree. We probably both have a point. Anyway, people started massively overestimating how SMO 'changed' the language, when in reality it was simply the addition of a few words. They did not change anything- they added. And only nouns and adjectives etc, nothing that would interfere with the integrity of a sentence- no tenses. The GOC also standardised spelling which I understand felt like an attack but again- we really had no need for both grave and acute accents as thry didn't effect different pronunciations, so it made sense to just have one. However, this slightly modernised Gaelic exists very comfortably with the fireside Gaelic of my father and his generation. SMO includes ancient songs and poetry, which is the main literature of Gaelic, rather than books, in its Gaelic courses. There's no lack of authenticity. Catriona Macintyre from Uist, Alec Valtos from Skye and plenty other native speakers born and brought up in the language but who also WRITE it, are working for SMO and believe in what it does. People who slag it are usually not speaking from a place of real understanding of what it does. by Happy_Wafer_1407 (Tue 27th Jun 2023 10:02am)
