  • Right now... Buy new. Prices haven't risen yet and you're just the kind of buyer they like. by Henrijs85 (Fri 30th Jul 2021 9:43pm)
  • If you're out west I recommend Motorworx near anniesland by Henrijs85 (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 7:59am)
  • I don't think it's so obviously bad, however I agree it could be a lot better. Tbh people drop litter because it's already there. The council could do more to clean up, but at the end of the day there's plenty of bins around, no excuse to be a slob. Glasgow also has a drug use problem. That needs tackled with better education about drugs in schools and more focus on treating the addicted. And alcohol abuse could be tackled. However I still love this city. It feels alive and real. When I go to Edinburgh I can't help but feel like I'm in a Scotland theme park, all dressed up for the tourists. It's nice and sometimes I play tourist there, but all in all I prefer Glasgow. by Henrijs85 (Sun 8th Aug 2021 6:54pm)
  • Because every bar has Kahlua / Tia Maria, vodka, and milk? If you have those three why wouldn't you? by Henrijs85 (Fri 13th Aug 2021 11:27pm)
  • Generally spend your time in the city centre or west end. I recommend Ashton Lane for food and drink, close to the botanic gardens and kelvingrove park, great western road around kelvinbridge is nice. As far as the centre goes three main shopping streets, nice hidden away places too. by Henrijs85 (Fri 13th Aug 2021 11:34pm)
  • Big companies like Arnold Clark which have loads of branches? by Henrijs85 (Fri 13th Aug 2021 11:37pm)
  • Barras market when it's on, Barras itself for gigs, but that needs planned. Honestly I don't know but it's not the best part of town, it's one of those areas you don't go to if you don't have a reason to. South side is almost all residential and North Glasgow pretty much the same. On the edge of the east end and centre there is the cathedral to see, and the necropolis which is pretty interesting. by Henrijs85 (Sat 14th Aug 2021 8:56am)
  • Next, good balance of price to quality by Henrijs85 (Thu 19th Aug 2021 9:14pm)
  • I think there's a lot of history that gives people a bad impression. I moved to Glasgow in 2003 at 18, and I've loved it the whole time. No intention on moving unless I have a good reason to. I was born in Riga, Latvia, and lived in London, Bedfordshire, and Inverness. My parents and sister now live in the US. I don't have any wish to move. But I've also always lived in the west end. Theres certainly rougher areas. by Henrijs85 (Sun 22nd Aug 2021 1:00pm)
  • If you find it a bit expensive the south side isn't too bad. Or go further west like scotstoun between partick and Yoker. by Henrijs85 (Sun 22nd Aug 2021 1:46pm)
  • If he's living there I'm guessing he can't afford to or that's just where he was given a council flat. Not everyone has the luxury of choosing where they live. by Henrijs85 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 7:39pm)
  • What are your interests? Hobbies? Best off going to organised stuff and meeting people that way. by Henrijs85 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 8:24pm)
  • Meetup is a good site, most organisations are starting to do in person stuff now again. by Henrijs85 (Sun 14th Nov 2021 8:42pm)
  • Do it as a day trip by train, start early. Glasgow is what Scotland is, in comparison Edinburgh feels like a Scotland theme park, worth a visit for a tourist I guess. Plenty to do and see in Glasgow though. by Henrijs85 (Mon 15th Nov 2021 12:52pm)
  • I know that, but you get a good sense of it from Glasgow and the surrounding areas (thinking loch Lomond etc). The comparison was to Edinburgh, which feels more like what Americans think Scotland is. As soon as you're off the train you're blasted with bagpipes, you walk down narrow little stone built streets up to an old castle, it's a fairytale version of Scotland which most Scots don't live in. by Henrijs85 (Mon 15th Nov 2021 1:57pm)
  • Yes. Me and my wife are yet to make that combined and we're absolutely fine. Though buy a house/flat if you can. Rental price in comparison to mortgage is extortionate, though you could say the same anywhere. by Henrijs85 (Sat 11th Dec 2021 11:15am)
  • Buchanan Street seems to be doing ok. I think the secret is shops worth visiting, sauchiehall street was worse than Buchanan Street and argyle Street to start with, and more restaurants, bars, cafes etc so you actually want to go these. Most of the good ones are off the main shopping streets. When I mean argyle Street was better to start with I mean the shops on argyle Street were the better choice. TK max, better on argyle Street, Primark, better on argyle Street, HMV, better on argyle Street. If I'm shopping I don't even go down argyle Street, it's not worth it. Also no parking. I can park at king Street car park cheaply and easily, nothing like that that end. by Henrijs85 (Sun 12th Dec 2021 11:02pm)
  • King Street car park is pretty good. by Henrijs85 (Tue 11th Jan 2022 9:42pm)
  • Take a day trip to Balloch by train and spend some time by Loch Lomond. Transport Museum, Kelvingrove museum. Go get lunch/ dinner in Ashton lane, walk through the botanic gardens. Spend a day shopping in the centre. Take a day trip to Edinburghs royal mile by train. Plenty of other smaller things in/around those places. by Henrijs85 (Sat 22nd Jan 2022 12:04pm)
  • Morrisons at anniesland have them now. Otherwise Aldi. by Henrijs85 (Tue 15th Feb 2022 6:54pm)
  • Because tourists eat it because they think it's what we eat. by Henrijs85 (Tue 5th Apr 2022 10:28pm)
  • Depends what you like. There's plenty to do in Glasgow or take a train to balloch for a hike if the weather's good. If you want to wander around I'd do round kevingrove park down to the uni through Ashton lane up to byres road and the botanic gardens, then walk back down great Western road. by Henrijs85 (Tue 17th May 2022 10:28pm)
  • Newton Mearns or Milngavie if you want really close by Henrijs85 (Mon 20th Jun 2022 10:02pm)
  • How can one have sold out when they're owned by the same guy? Neither have, cathouse has. by Henrijs85 (Thu 23rd Jun 2022 7:43pm)
  • Go hike, take a train to balloch and you'll have plenty of walks to go on. Find a really good productive hobby, this is a bit shit on its own but if you find a thing you love doing you won't regret it. Might take trying your hand at a few different things though. by Henrijs85 (Sun 17th Jul 2022 10:22pm)
  • I love spring but if you're fairly young you'll enjoy autumn more, there's just more on, more to do, just the weather won't be great. by Henrijs85 (Mon 25th Jul 2022 7:51pm)
  • Ashton lane, get the underground to hillhead, exit turn left and left again. A whole variety of places, I'd recommend brel, or ubiquitous chip for dinner, there's a cinema, there's loads of choice by Henrijs85 (Sat 30th Jul 2022 5:24pm)
  • I'd only accept that if you are black. I am white, and I think there is something wrong with this. Mainly because white people aren't disproportionately targeted by police violence and other forms of discrimination. Does it happen? Sure, but not because of skin colour. For black people it does and what "white lives matter" does, is devalue the black lives matter message, and imply that somehow the black lives matter movement is somehow saying white lives don't matter, which it isnt. by Henrijs85 (Sun 31st Jul 2022 6:23pm)
  • That fact you don't see yourself as privileged does not mean you aren't. Everyone has barriers in their way, and everyone has their own challenges, the point is, as white people living in a predominantly white country, our skin colour is not an obstacle to overcome. For every person of colour it is an extra roadblock in their life they need to overcome, and that is wrong. Just saying "I don't see them any differently" doesn't help equality. We're not colour blind, they should be seen differently, they have a heritage that is vibrant and wonderful in its own way and that should be celebrated. by Henrijs85 (Sun 31st Jul 2022 6:53pm)
  • Well that's all very tough, but did any of them have the colour of their skin compound their hardships? And saying you don't see colour is dismissing their problems. What's wrong with recognising a part of somebody's identity? Your hardships do not make anyone elses less relevant. If you gave a person of colour the starting points that various members of your family, and you had, I'll bet their lives would have been even harder. by Henrijs85 (Sun 31st Jul 2022 8:30pm)
  • I thought it was. I'm a software developer and there's no shortage of job. We even build satellites, JP Morgan has a huge tech hub here. There's other examples too, more could be done to publicise it though. by Henrijs85 (Mon 1st Aug 2022 1:14pm)
  • 250-300k is what you'd expect to pay for any 3 bed in a half decent area. But honestly once you have your first property (that's the challenge) every mortgage payment increases the cash you have to bump up the amount you have to spend next time. Thats not being loaded, thats just something you can eventually get on an average income as a couple. by Henrijs85 (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 8:50pm)
  • I'd go to strung out guitars they're a joy to deal with. by Henrijs85 (Thu 11th Aug 2022 7:36am)
  • I second the meetups idea, that is the app/website called meetup. They're public with lots of visibility but still a place to meet new people who share your interests. by Henrijs85 (Mon 5th Sep 2022 10:13pm)
  • Geek retreat is probably a good start if you're into nerdy stuff. by Henrijs85 (Sun 11th Sep 2022 12:31pm)
  • I don't think they send anything back unless it's an edge case excusal. Had nothing back before when I was on holiday, but they did get back to confirm when I didn't feel comfortable doing right after starting a new job. by Henrijs85 (Fri 16th Sep 2022 1:51pm)
  • Went through self teaching in 2020 and now work as a developer. What I would recommend if finding a mentor. by Henrijs85 (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 3:20pm)
  • I was lucky I knew someone who worked freelance with the language I was wanting to learn (C#) I'd suggest racking your brain to think of anyone you know, or anyone you know might know. Data analysts, IT systems people might be an avenue to get in touch. by Henrijs85 (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 4:06pm)
  • Frankie Boyle is from Glasgow I believe. In general Scots are very self deprecating. I'm not a Scot but I live in Glasgow. It's a great place to live I think, it just doesn't have the pretty tourist stuff that places like Edinburgh have, it's a city built on industry and has now switched to a service economy, as a result it's heritage is very working class. There's a bit of COVID attrition right now as a lot of the city centre shops have closed, personally I think that's temporary. by Henrijs85 (Thu 20th Oct 2022 10:08pm)

  • Don't use PayPal use your card. Businesses suffer huge costs from PayPal charges. Not fussed if I'm paying a multinationals but if it's the Chinese down the road I'd rather make sure they get more of the money by Henrijs85 (Sun 23rd Oct 2022 6:53pm)
  • Thanks all someone should be taking it Sunday, I'll keep remade network in mind in future though. by Henrijs85 (Wed 9th Nov 2022 6:18pm)
  • I think it's easy to be in your own little world. I'm a foreign Glasgow resident, have been for near 20 years, but I grew up in England, so my Latvian accent is very subtle, and moving around so much growing up it's not even an English accent, most people can't place it. Personally I've never experienced racism towards me, but I've always lived in the west end. What I have experienced is how casual other people can be about it, otherwise nice reasonable people, suddenly come out with the most racist things. I've called them out on it before because that could easily be me, always hear "yeah but I don't think of you as foreign". No, please, if you know me, and you like me, think of me as foreign so you begin to understand how idiotic some of your attitudes are. by Henrijs85 (Tue 29th Nov 2022 9:15pm)
  • A very extreme kind of racist. Nazis in world war 2 were fascists, because they believed that their "pure" german blood made them superior and they should rule the world. There are people who think the same about their heritage, and see people from other ethnicities as lesser, and that they should be driven out of the country. by Henrijs85 (Thu 2nd Feb 2023 9:56pm)
  • I'd rather complain about the people who are doing 60 in the outside lane when there isn't any restriction on that road. by Henrijs85 (Fri 24th Feb 2023 8:45pm)
  • I mean, for a year? That's cheap. by Henrijs85 (Sun 2nd Apr 2023 9:31am)
  • Yeah I know teenagers can be messy, but they can clean up after themselves 😂(not that they always do) by Henrijs85 (Mon 10th Apr 2023 5:26pm)
  • Don't be a dick is pretty much it. But it's a bus so there will be plenty there anyway, don't add to them. by Henrijs85 (Mon 10th Apr 2023 7:41pm)
  • Or stay in Glasgow and go to Brel? by Henrijs85 (Sat 15th Apr 2023 2:41pm)
  • Ashton lane is probably the best one stop shop. by Henrijs85 (Wed 19th Apr 2023 3:13pm)
  • Try your local shops, Spar, RS Mcolls, day-to-day, whatever you have local, they don't do the big auto filtering stuff, print out a CV (ask at a library if you don't have one) and hand some round. Independent subway branches, Greggs etc are worth a shout too by Henrijs85 (Thu 20th Apr 2023 9:04am)
  • If your friends insult you as a greeting, that's normal and means you're properly accepted by them. by Henrijs85 (Thu 20th Apr 2023 11:18am)
  • Slaters by Henrijs85 (Fri 21st Apr 2023 8:36am)
  • Been here for near 20 years and I love it. I think a lot of it has been influenced by the fact I've always been in the west end. I see a lot of people down on the city but I think that has a lot to do with where in the city you live. by Henrijs85 (Mon 24th Apr 2023 8:23am)
  • Ashton Lane, botanic gardens, kelvingrove park and museum, if in town try Babs for food. by Henrijs85 (Tue 25th Apr 2023 8:28pm)
  • Toyota Yaris, petrol, as low miles as you can afford. Cheap to insure and run, bulletproof reliability, and you won't feel embarrassed getting out of it. by Henrijs85 (Fri 4th Aug 2023 1:52pm)
  • We've got a neighbour that has 3 vans, an SUV and a huge caravan. They live in a two bed terrace, they've ripped up their front garden badly and parked two vans there but the rest are on the street. This is a narrow street that people can only park on one side of. Constantly blocking parking spaces. It's infuriating. by Henrijs85 (Sat 5th Aug 2023 10:06am)
  • I should say it's also become my profession. by Henrijs85 (Sat 5th Aug 2023 1:06pm)
  • I learned how to code during furlough, it's fun, and a new skill. by Henrijs85 (Sat 5th Aug 2023 1:06pm)
  • I mean I'm white so I might not be able to comment accurately but for what it's worth, I haven't seen any hostility to black people, some minorities like the Pakistani community maybe. But I don't think it's a greater degree than anywhere else. Again, I might be wrong because it's not something I can have any personal experience of. But it's a common saying that if you live in Glasgow, you're Glaswegian. In circles I move that holds true, just don't get a flat in a rough area, try and get student accommodation. by Henrijs85 (Wed 9th Aug 2023 4:57pm)
  • Also if you hear someone call someone else the c word, that's not necessarily an insult they could just be greeting a friend. by Henrijs85 (Wed 9th Aug 2023 5:00pm)
  • "We're all fae somewhere" by Henrijs85 (Wed 9th Aug 2023 5:36pm)
  • I'm not going to deny it was difficult, but I learned to code during lockdown self taught and I'm now in a Dev job for just over 2 years, second job in fact, came with a big fat pay rise. Now making double what I did before lockdown. by Henrijs85 (Mon 14th Aug 2023 8:52am)
  • You can't get in trouble for using a torrent application since it has legitimate uses. However pirating is illegal, I'm yet to hear anyone get in trouble for it, but obviously I would never do that. by Henrijs85 (Thu 17th Aug 2023 8:47am)
  • Try an agency like Change in the short term, probably bad work but it'll see you through till you find a permanent position. by Henrijs85 (Thu 17th Aug 2023 7:44pm)
  • Nice to see someone else think it's great, I agree. But like you I've always lived in the west, just kept moving further and further west though started by st George's cross now I'm in knightswood. by Henrijs85 (Thu 17th Aug 2023 9:18pm)
  • I swear it always seems to be kids. I don't know if it's a lockdown hit from them being just old enough to be out on their own but not allowed to because of COVID, now they're running riot and no one's taught them better or not. Just a theory (yeah I know scumbag adults do it too). by Henrijs85 (Fri 18th Aug 2023 7:08pm)
  • They're called Kura now, but no better. by Henrijs85 (Thu 21st Sep 2023 9:57pm)
  • You'll be fine, though the area around Glasgow university is fancier than Strathclyde, by which I mean Strathclyde is city centre there's a mix of every demographic going. Glasgow Uni is the fancy one, it's either GU students or rich(ish) people for the most part. Of course plenty of exceptions in both cases. by Henrijs85 (Sun 8th Oct 2023 9:55pm)
  • Absolutely. It's really hard to tell what house you can afford when the price the seller actually wants isn't clear from the advert, and the amount you have to offer is near guesswork. by Henrijs85 (Thu 12th Oct 2023 7:41am)
  • A price is advertised, that's the price the seller will sell the property for. If the buyer wants a good deal they'll offer under the price advertised and see if the seller accepts. It's like selling anything else. Also the case in the rest of the UK. by Henrijs85 (Thu 12th Oct 2023 7:40am)
  • As a buyer that's easier to deal with, you make a lower offer but you know what the sellers target is, not here's an advertised number to get your interest, now try and guess what I'd actually settle for. by Henrijs85 (Thu 12th Oct 2023 9:43am)
  • I don't know, on fixed price or a car deal I would advertise the max price I think someone who desperately wants exactly what I'm selling would be willing to pay, to get people at least interested, I know it's unlikely I'd get all of that but you can't advertise for way over it's worth or no one would bother offering. by Henrijs85 (Thu 12th Oct 2023 10:14am)
  • I prefer LED, but I wish they would dim them a bit, at least on residential streets. Need blackout curtains just to sleep at night. by Henrijs85 (Sun 12th Nov 2023 11:04am)
  • Wouldn't have bought one but got given one as a present. Use it all the time now. by Henrijs85 (Sat 25th Nov 2023 9:55pm)
