  • I'm in there right now, and things are still more expensive than other shops and online. Was hoping for a cheap switch deal but its the same price at curry's for instance, and that place will still exist in a while if I need to return it for whatever reason... Anyway, I used to love this place. Got my first gaming PC made here in like 2001 but stopped coming when online distribution took over PC gaming. Used to buy all my stuff here before they stopped stocking PC games. by MrNob (Mon 10th Jun 2019 5:00pm)

  • Aye they do Section 5 of the PDF (at least for partick): 5. VIRTUAL RESIDENT PARKING PERMITS A virtual resident parking permit means that your vehicle will be registered with the Council as having a credit for parking and a ‘permit acceptance notification’ will be issued, either by email or post, as confirmation. The ‘permit acceptance notification’ will state the period your virtual permit remains valid. This permit will allow you to utilise any parking bay which displays a zone identifier which corresponds to that on the ‘permit acceptance notification’, however this does not guarantee use of any particular parking space. Prior to receiving your permit acceptance notification, you must continue to pay for parking by purchasing and displaying a Pay and Display ticket or by using the RingGo cashless parking facility. by MrNob (Mon 8th Jul 2019 10:06pm)

  • I used to live on Dorchester Ave and wondered about the English street names as well. I can't remember where I got the information from, but I have it in my head that they were named as such because there were lots of English people coming up to work on mines and they wanted to make them feel welcome. Good story, but cannot give you any thing other than that. by MrNob (Fri 4th Oct 2019 3:10pm)

  • Not true, there are fish stalls and multiple veg stalls. There is a guy from Corrie Mains with eggs every time. There are usually at least two baked goods stalls and this week there was a new bakery, whose sourdough I've been enjoying today. There is a French guy selling French stuff, sometimes a Spanish guy selling Spanish stuff, an Indian lady selling Indian stuff. All in addition to a handful of meat stalls. I live across the road from it and think its excellent. by MrNob (Sun 27th Oct 2019 2:17pm)

  • You've not answered any of my questions. What would you like the alternative for short term housing to be? What is the moral alterantive you want? by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 4:27pm)
  • As a godd landlord (well I hope the tenants think that) I've been in support of the new regulations and would support greater accountability on Landlord because of all the shit ones giving us a bad name. But the only issue I would have with a government run system is the issue I'd have with any government-only solution. Usually the market demands some alternatives. We see it even with healthcare in this country. by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 4:42pm)
  • I think that all those Landlord review type systems would be great. I would love to see good reviews. >Since the renter pays the power bill, the landlord has no incentive to spend extra for the more environmentally sound option that will last longer. The landlord needs to get an EPC rating of a certain quality. But the threshold ispretty low now. You do have to have a valid EPC to rent your property out at all. You can make the decsion when you choose to rent the property. FYI the rating of my rental property is 88. >Finally, there is the issue of inheritance. When a landlord dies, the property they worked hard to buy goes to the heirs who have done nothing to deserve it, creating a permanent wealth gap of rental income just because. Well all assets, not just property are able to be inherited. There are arguments against inheritance, but I don't think they should be limited to property. by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 4:53pm)
  • I'm not sure the balance of power is completely one-sided as you think. Tenants can leave properties in Scotland at one months notice, it costs me time and money everytime that happens. I'd love someone to stay for years, that incentivises me to be a good landlord. by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 4:55pm)
  • Ok but what about this scenario: IT worker on 80K gets seconded to new town for year. Gets housing paid for by work, he doesn't need social housing. He wants a nice flat to live in. Will the government provide that? by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 5:07pm)
  • > I've no idea how people make any money off it without being a scumbag Don't use agents, and switch to interest only mortages. Idea is you sell it at the end of the term and usually make back capital that way. by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 5:05pm)
  • But that would be wasteful, too much housing. The taxpayer would take the hit. Is there not some advantage to a private landlord taking on that risk instead of the public purse? by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 5:33pm)
  • There is a full 4% on any property past your first. There are schemes for first time buyers already in place, although you could argue not going far enough. by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 5:32pm)
  • I don't think I'm sinning, I was just thinking out loud. I dont think the system is broken, it's just the system we live in. It could be better. Is your choice of job not exploitation? I can argue that I provide clean, safe and affordable housing to people in need of it. Does your job proving something as essential as housing? by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 5:30pm)
  • You could say that about anyone and anything. by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 5:37pm)
  • I maintain it. Homes need ongoing work. You don't think that's anything? by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 5:42pm)
  • Now you're trying to dictate at what stages in economic transactions people are morally allowed to extract profit? If homes are off limit why are tradespeople allowed to profit. Is the painter allowed to profit? He didn't make the paint. Services exist and people make money from them. My service is joining lots of them together and taking risk on capital investment (mortgages aren't things everyone wants). You obviously deem it an unnecessary one, but at least you now know why I don't. by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 5:54pm)
  • Are other rental services immoral? What about bike rental? If I owned a fleet of bikes and outsource the maintenance is that immoral? Why is the management and risk of capital not a service? by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 6:06pm)
  • Pretty good reason to be fair. There is notice required in Scotland of some time (can't remember exactly, could be 3 months) but it would always be a shock. by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 6:21pm)
  • I do know the difference, I just wanted to explore where to draw the line. But ideally no one would *need* to live in any one particular rental property. If there was abundant social/state housing and private landlords provided services only outside of that, say in the luxury market, would that be morally acceptable. FYI I do believe in strong regulation of services such as housing, but I personally never completely rule out the private trading of almost anything. There will always be someone needs something that a centralised service can't or doesn't provide. Also had to look up interlocutor, new one for me thanks! by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 6:33pm)
  • Sorry you think that, but I'm here to discuss. From my point of view no one seems to be listening to my side of the argument. Eveyone is just down voting me even though I'm putting thought into my answers. by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 6:35pm)
  • Hey thanks for the meaningful reply. I'm not sure I totally agree with your logic. I agree that the labour of the tenant contributes to the maintentence of my investment. But is that not true of any any business relationship? Boots doesn't add value to my labour when I buy razors. I give them my money for something I don't have. It is the same for Landlords and I fundamentally disagree with the idea that Landlords don't provide a service. If I provide a good, clean, safe home and reduce the need for someone to invest their own capital then that is adding value to their labour. Because they can use their labour on other things. by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 10:10pm)
  • Looking at your recent post history it looks like you're having trouble buying a place of your own and are being forced to rent. Perhaps you're unable to be unbiasesd, as am I. Boots example is just an example, weird that you focused on it. If it's limited essential resources you think should be controlled, why arent you protesting outside supermarkets and demanding they give food for free. Or outside power companies demanding they provide energy for free. Anyway, we're not getting anywhere with this. Have a good evening. by MrNob (Fri 10th Jul 2020 11:19pm)
  • Done. I work for a renewable energy company which develops, builds and operates offshore wind farms so I might be a bit biased. by MrNob (Wed 19th Aug 2020 11:32pm)
  • I always wear underwear with my kilt. It's the most expensive piece of clothing I own, why would i want to rub my balls and arse all over it? Especially when you're getting sweaty from dancing. Plus wool is rough, not nice when rubbing on delicate parts. To address your point, yes its completely unacceptable when people do that. But also if you're afraid of showing your balls to kids, wear pants. I used to be a Scout Leader and our uniform included a kilt. I wore pants. by MrNob (Fri 21st Aug 2020 11:15am)
  • If the landlord registration number is pending it would usually mean they have just submitted their registration. Mine was pending for a few days (just checked email - took 3 days to get the number from paying). You could ask to see the receipt from the application if you want some proof. by MrNob (Fri 21st Aug 2020 1:59pm)
  • I spent about £1500 total. But I went bespoke and made in Scotland for pretty much everything, by MrNob (Fri 21st Aug 2020 1:55pm)
  • It might not be a real solution to the problem, but it's best to just move on from a bad landlord and property. If you can find a new place, just give them your months notice and be done with them. by MrNob (Sun 23rd Aug 2020 3:33pm)
  • If you want an authentic Lebanese food experience you can try Lotus in Whiteinch. IMO a much better style of kebab/grill than Turkish/German. by MrNob (Sun 23rd Aug 2020 3:30pm)
  • If you live in a flat in Scotland you can leave any flat with 28 days nlotice. You don't have to give a reason. Please read your rights: https://scotland.shelter.org.uk/get_advice/advice_topics/renting_rights/renting_from_a_private_landlord/the_private_residential_tenancy >If you want to end the tenancy, then you will have to give the landlord 28 days notice in writing. The notice has to state the day on which the tenancy is to end, normally the day after notice period has expired. by MrNob (Mon 24th Aug 2020 12:01pm)
  • If it was your permanent residence (even if you weren't there a lot) you would have them as a lodger, not a tenant. For most mortgages this isn't a problem. by MrNob (Thu 27th Aug 2020 12:47pm)

  • DELETED I'm hardly posh, that's my point. I just don't have a strong accent. Neither of my parents are even from Glasgow for me to inherit it from (one not even British). But I guess it's ok to judge people by certain traits. And if one of them is a so called 'posh identifier' then it's even more acceptable? by MrNob (Tue 11th May 2021 3:28pm)

  • Yep 28 days notice all you need to provide. I'm a landlord so if you told me you were coming for only 3 months I wouldn't choose you over a potentially longer term tenant but if you didn't tell me there would be nothing I could do about it. And tbh I wouldn't be pissed, getting the flats rented out to new tenants is pretty easy by MrNob (Wed 11th Aug 2021 12:25pm)
