  • HMRC have said that every time he paid us (which he had weekly since the start of Feb into our banks until we closed) he should have updated our payments in our PAYE scheme. So basically due to his negligence he didn’t enrol us onto the system and provide for accurate updates. He did however enrol us at a later date (he said Mid-March but has been unable to provide exact date when we requested) and HMRC have said that if the time between the my first payment and him enrolling me into the system was abnormally long they would look into it. Looking increasingly more unlikely that anything is going to come of it though so ACAS may be worth a shot. by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 3:35pm)
  • We’ve not received any so far but after repeatedly asking he said he would send us all of our payslips over. He’s definitely been on the fiddle and I feel totally powerless to the situation by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 3:42pm)
  • Thanks for the advice, may have to give UC a call and see if anything can be done. He’s changed his story at least 5 times in the last month so don’t think I’m going to have any luck, just frustrating that the employer has all the power and we’re basically not going to get furloughed due to his negligence. With regards to another job I might have to bite the bullet and apply for another job but had been reluctant to do so due to upcoming exams. Thanks very much for your sympathy and I wish your sister and her flatmate the best of luck in their quest! by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 3:39pm)
  • If only the scheme was compulsory to save people in this situation from unsympathetic employers. That’s the exact same as this guy, keeps trying to delay everything. Yeah definitely, I’m going to name and shame for sure once this ordeal is over. by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 3:48pm)
  • I appreciate your sympathy. Yeah my biggest surprise is that we’re paid in bank transfers also, I’ve worked in a dodgy wee cafe years ago and they paid us solely in cash. The payments come from a from an account ending “Ltd” so must come from a business account so there is a paper trail of payments going back to the beginning of February. I’ll definitely do both, just frustrated by how many hours I’ve spent on phone calls to HMRC and corresponding with my incompetent boss whilst I have exams that should be my sole worry right now. I may repost for sure, thanks very much for your help! by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 4:41pm)
  • I thought so too. I asked for them today and he said he cannot access them as they are on a PC at work (which doesn’t exist as far as I’m aware, there is no office in the pub)... so claims that he will send them later this week by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 5:07pm)
  • Thanks for your reply it’s very enlightening I wasn’t aware of this. From the start I asked if I was on PAYE scheme as have had issues with employers in the past who have not had me on the books. He insisted we were and it wasn’t until I signed into HMRC myself I noticed there was no record. I asked him about it, and for wage slips to prove it, and he said it must be backlogged as he had definitely put us through, claiming that the wages for February didn’t go through until mid March and so it must not be on the system yet. Today he has told me that even if he is able to amend the dates and have me registered as before the furlough cut off, it’ll depend on whether the business actually remains open and that he was planning on sending me my p45 soon, but saying he hadn’t done so yet as he was trying to see if furlough would work. When I first asked to be enrolled in furlough last month he said I had been made redundant the day the pub closed (despite saying it would only be closed for a few weeks due to virus), then when I asked if that meant I was currently unemployed he said he wasn’t sure, then he said I still had the job, and now back to redundancy chat. The story is consistently changing. What would be the grounds for negligence/damage? I don’t know anything about that. by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 5:05pm)
  • But surely if my employers negligence is disproportionately affecting me and is the reason my eligibility has been compromised there should be some form of recourse? Also doesn’t seem fair that employers have full discretion - will surely result in a lot of discriminatory decisions and people left in vulnerable positions despite fulfilling the criteria by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 5:14pm)
  • Agreed. Aw that’s such a good shout I hadn’t even thought of them! Thanks a lot, really hope I get somewhere but has felt like fighting a losing battle these last few days just continuous hurdles by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 5:20pm)
  • I am apparently on the PAYE system now I just need him to amend the dates to show that I was employed before the cut off despite the date he put me onto the system. Apparently this can be done but I’m not entirely sure? Someone on the online webchat for HMRC also said there may be something to investigate if the time between my first payment and the date he enrolled me on PAYE is abnormally long, as I was paid weekly yet there’s no records of any payments on my HMRC records by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 5:28pm)
  • That’s good to know at least there might be a chance with that then. I can understand that, thanks a lot for your insight it’s been as clear a response as I’ve got on the matter! by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 7:29pm)
  • This is my concern also, that he can continue to not furlough me and rather than having to look like the bad guy in doing so, he has an excuse as he can say I’m not eligible due to the late enrolment (even though it’s due to his own negligence) and I receive nothing by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 7:39pm)
  • This is also a concern of mine! It seems I am eligible but from the start he has tried to lower my expectations of receiving money, saying things like “the scheme seems too good to be true, I wouldn’t rely on it”, “you might be better just applying for job seekers allowance”. This gives me suspicions that he has has no intention of getting the money to me from the offset. I’ve been very careful to keep screenshots of all conversations with him, but that’s a good idea to get it straight in writing from him. Citizens advice was my next port of call, I’m going to get in touch with them tomorrow hopefully there’s something that can be done. Thanks so much for your message really appreciate it by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 8:04pm)
  • This is exactly why I am surprised that he is continuing to string me along - I feel now the best thing for him to do would be to come clean and just be straight with me as I’ve made it clear I’ve already been liaising with HMRC so anything dodgy will surely be rumbled by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 8:07pm)
  • This is so good to know thank you so much! Really do think I’ll need to be looking at other options so this sounds hopeful, thanks so much for letting me know! by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 11:18pm)
  • I will once I know for definite his intentions! Trying to do everything by the book and not give him any excuses to not furlough me if he can! Although I feel I’m just about to accept defeat by PopeLorenzo (Tue 21st Apr 2020 11:21pm)
  • Yeah it’s a really frustrating situation for employees when they are bearing the brunt of their employers misdemeanours. Feel like I’m getting the consequences for his bad decisions meanwhile nothing is happening to him. Funny you mention that, he claims the reason we were late being put through the PAYE system was that the pub is a new business, but neither the pub nor he are new... by PopeLorenzo (Wed 22nd Apr 2020 1:49pm)
  • I’ve been told he has furloughed 1 staff member at another pub but not sure if that’s truth or rumour by PopeLorenzo (Wed 22nd Apr 2020 1:52pm)
  • That’s probably a good idea as I don’t think he feels the slightest bit threatened and thinks I’ll eventually give up and go away by PopeLorenzo (Wed 22nd Apr 2020 1:50pm)
  • Honestly never even thought of that, there’s one a couple of miles away that is seemingly open according to google so I’ll check it out. Thanks very much for your help. by PopeLorenzo (Thu 23rd Apr 2020 9:37am)
  • Heading there now thanks very much by PopeLorenzo (Thu 23rd Apr 2020 10:24am)

  • Have never even thought about trying there for pet stuff that sounds ideal! Did you keep the cone on until the wound had healed? I’m hoping a normal collar will do the job but don’t see how it will stop her getting at it ... by PopeLorenzo (Thu 23rd Apr 2020 10:30am)

  • From a tenant’s point of view can’t advise on one to go to but I can advise one not to go to, avoid Macleod just off Byres Road. As a tenant with them I found them to be highly disrespectful and difficult to deal with by PopeLorenzo (Tue 28th Apr 2020 11:33pm)
  • We weren’t given contracts unfortunately and he’s just made me redundant! by PopeLorenzo (Thu 30th Apr 2020 1:41pm)

  • You’ve convinced me by PopeLorenzo (Tue 12th May 2020 11:14am)
  • I’ve lived in Finnieston previously which I really liked but as far as I’m aware the rents have gone up massively. Which pubs around dennistoun are worth going to? The cheap rent is definitely a large part of the pull factor for there. Thanks for the help! by PopeLorenzo (Tue 12th May 2020 11:19am)
  • Budget is only that as I’ll be sharing with a mate. Thanks for the advice, I’ll defo start searching around Queen’s Park. I’ve liked the area the few times I’ve been over there by PopeLorenzo (Tue 12th May 2020 11:17am)
  • I have a strong Irish accent so perhaps wouldn’t be suitable for me, especially on match days (whenever football resumes that is) by PopeLorenzo (Tue 12th May 2020 5:10pm)
  • I should have specified that I’ll be sharing with someone else so it’s not an individual point. thanks for the fatherly advice though Da by PopeLorenzo (Tue 12th May 2020 5:18pm)
  • The cobbled roads keep the character of the place imo by PopeLorenzo (Wed 13th May 2020 10:17pm)
  • Thanks. Yeah I love it up there. I’m always torn between thinking that the area is under utilised and that the council could make it more of a focal point in Glasgow given its proximity to both the city centre and west end but at the same time I love how quiet and discreet it is up there. by PopeLorenzo (Thu 14th May 2020 7:14am)
  • Seen those plans, look good and I really would love it if they had more amenities such as cafes/pubs etc on the canals as the area is class. However, it’s a tough one as those who have flats in the old buildings up there already will seriously have their views hampered if the plans are to go ahead. by PopeLorenzo (Thu 14th May 2020 9:48am)
  • Death to all litterers by PopeLorenzo (Sat 16th May 2020 8:55pm)
  • Same thing outside of Big Licks on Finnieston street, people shamelessly launch their rubbish out their window despite being yards from bins. How badly raised must you be to be to do that? by PopeLorenzo (Sat 16th May 2020 9:10pm)
  • I’ve always been intrigued by that place by PopeLorenzo (Wed 24th Jun 2020 8:53am)
  • Generally speaking I think it’s a definite improvement but I’m not sure about the gold by PopeLorenzo (Wed 24th Jun 2020 8:55am)
  • I’m also from Ireland and I find that litter here is pretty woeful, I’d actually become accustomed to it but anytime my parents visit they always comment upon it. Even in the rougher and poorer areas of the city I come from litter isn’t half as much of an issue and there’s definitely a cultural acceptance of just dumping stuff on the ground by some people here. I notice another reply here about broken window theory and I do think that is a common cause in certain areas but I also think that the council and their lack of regular bin collection, especially in tenement closes, allows a culture of littering to manifest. I’ve lived in my current flat for almost 2 years and our blue bins have been emptied about 3 times, luckily most residents are sensible and respectful enough to take their stuff down to the recycling points on the street. However, when a more lazy or disrespectful new resident moves in they often just leave bags of stuff beside or on top of the clearly full bins naturally spilling out all over the place when squirrels or birds get to them, which I find to be infuriating. Definitely we need a mix of education from a very young age and a regular high standard of bin collection from the council and a higher volume of bins around certain poorer areas of the city. To help eradicate the broken window effect isn’t as easy but by filling derelict long-standing gap sites around the city with something decent and nice to look at could go a long way in doing so. by PopeLorenzo (Wed 24th Jun 2020 9:13am)
  • Jogged there at the start of lockdown and totally blew my cover, they started throwing their scissors at me like ninja stars by PopeLorenzo (Tue 14th Jul 2020 10:37am)

  • Must check it out, I love some of the murals around Glasgow. I hope the council commission lots more murals by local artists especially in more run-down post industrial areas. They make a massive difference imo by PopeLorenzo (Tue 14th Jul 2020 12:35pm)

  • I’ve used them and they do an incredible job. Had a pair of my suede trainers looking brand new after I thought that they couldn’t be fixed. Definitely recommend by PopeLorenzo (Wed 22nd Jul 2020 1:53pm)
  • The frugal lifestyle of a student has deterred me from purchasing one, combined with the usual availability of the university’s printing services for the limited occasions which I need to print something. Thanks for the response though. by PopeLorenzo (Wed 22nd Jul 2020 2:14pm)
  • I agree, lovely parts of the city centre are totally overrun with cars. Jogging in the city centre during lockdown made me realise how the more pleasant the centre is when it is car-free, whilst that car park and its sheer size really drags down that part of town. The city centre should be as road vehicle-free as it possibly can be save for buses, taxis and delivery vans. by PopeLorenzo (Thu 30th Jul 2020 1:15pm)
  • We are making awful use of some of our lovely spaces too, Glasgow Cross particularly comes to mind. A historic space with some lovely old buildings with the Tolbooth steeple essentially being used as the centre of a roundabout. by PopeLorenzo (Thu 30th Jul 2020 1:43pm)
  • Icafe by PopeLorenzo (Sun 2nd Aug 2020 11:34pm)
  • I’ve never lived actually lived beside one but I’m from the North of Ireland and my grandmother lives across the road from one and it seems grand, they even host Irish dancing lessons as part of some cross community project, however this is in a quiet and middle-class ‘mixed village’ where misbehaviour of the kind that often occurs would be heavily frowned upon. On the flip side, in more loyalist areas they are used not only for band practice but social events and there is a strong likelihood of loud noise in marching season, as well as drunken bigots spilling out onto the street. My girlfriend’s family live beside one in Glasgow and she said a few weeks ago when she was there, a raucous crowd of muppets spilled out front the place and were singing sectarian songs and sieg-heiling (although they’ll probably claim they were doing ‘red hand salutes’ which is the usual excuse), so that’s probably what you can expect. Personally, I would avoid staying anywhere near one. by PopeLorenzo (Fri 14th Aug 2020 9:54am)
  • That would be brilliant, Kelvinway is so much more pleasant pedestrianised at is it now. When I moved to Glasgow I was so surprised that they didn't have some kind of Sunday market in Kelvingrove. Definitely something the city is lacking by PopeLorenzo (Mon 31st Aug 2020 10:42am)
  • Agree with other response, most of the buskers sing the same bland songs over and over. Desperately in need of something different. Guy I like the most is a guy that sings opera songs but he’s only there occasionally, he’s pretty damn good by PopeLorenzo (Sun 20th Sep 2020 10:31am)

  • You are commenting on the assumption that I am travelling from Glasgow. Anyway, even if I were, one of the exceptions to non-essential travel stipulates that one may travel “if you are a minister of religion or worship leader, travel for the purposes of leading an act of worship” which I am. Why else would I be going to a seminary? I’m covered on all sides by PopeLorenzo (Wed 2nd Dec 2020 12:44pm)
  • If you want to hear other thoughts on this I suggest scrolling through this subreddit as there has been multiple posts on the decline of the city centre during the pandemic and how rough it has become around near central station with the housing of lots of homeless people in central hotels and the fact that there is less people in the city centre to dilute their presence. But yes I agree that I feel bad for the staff and I read somewhere that something like 8 people had been found dead in that Mackintosh hotel since they began housing people in there which is a tragedy Edit: my mistake it was the Alexander Thomson hotel with the 8 deaths, still deeply saddening by PopeLorenzo (Wed 2nd Dec 2020 1:03pm)
