  • Definitely needs kids that no longer crawl on the floor. Now pet friendly makes sense, they can’t do much damage anymore. by Qpylon (Thu 26th Aug 2021 3:04pm)
  • I wonder whether the OpenRent worker ever looked at the photos while writing and posting the ad? by Qpylon (Thu 26th Aug 2021 3:05pm)
  • Really doubt most landlords would ever even consider this, but apparently this one really lacks common sense (and decency). I feel like it should be reportable to someone, but Glasgow environmental health phone number is apparently only an emergency line. Can’t find a non-emergency number. by Qpylon (Thu 26th Aug 2021 3:10pm)
  • About the bird shit on the floor? If it comes with a floor? This flat raises so many questions… by Qpylon (Thu 26th Aug 2021 3:39pm)
  • I’ve temporarily rented a room in a houseshare in one utterly terrible place, complete with rats and missing wallpaper and exposed wiring. But that was pretty honest about it. I paid low rent, cash-in-hand, and was happy enough. Even considered permanently renting a similarly crap place which the landlord wanted tenants to do up, and he said that upfront and priced it accordingly (but the dodgy plumbing put me off, beyond my DIY skills). This looks like someone trying to get vulnerable and desperate tenants, not cheap young people or people who will put in work in return for a cheap rented place to call home for a decade. Calling it “delightful” and “family-friendly” is some cheek. by Qpylon (Thu 26th Aug 2021 3:51pm)
  • I might try that - I rang the environmental task force a few minutes ago and they told me to report it to the lettings agent or landlord, maybe as “false advertising”. Which seems like telling them that grass is green. by Qpylon (Thu 26th Aug 2021 3:54pm)
  • I’ve temporarily stayed in worse before I think, temporarily. That was an obviously ‘honestly’ dodgy place though, cash-in-hand and drugs in the kitchen and all. Didn’t have bird poop on the floor like this one does, though. Just rats. Renting a place out that needs doing up seems OK, if that is in lieu of rent, but this ad makes me very uncomfortable in the ethics somehow. by Qpylon (Thu 26th Aug 2021 4:10pm)
  • True enough! by Qpylon (Thu 26th Aug 2021 4:51pm)
  • Doing that still works in Scotland, but you might run into trouble in England. England now has deposits limited to 5 weeks rent. Pet deposits seem like a decent way of compromising tbh, a dog can cause well over the normal deposit worth of damage to carpets let alone anything else if it’s not well trained. by Qpylon (Thu 26th Aug 2021 5:01pm)
  • Think it’s colloquial now, even young lettings agents use (and they definitely know the correct words, and rates for the area, going by conversation) by Qpylon (Thu 26th Aug 2021 7:33pm)
  • If they looked in decent nick, those would be better than my own current 80’s models! by Qpylon (Fri 27th Aug 2021 8:12am)
  • Tried ringing them but apparently it’s not their department. I’ve ended up just complaining to OpenRent (the lettings agent), as “photos do not match description” category according to the woman on the phone. Gave the excuse that it just makes all private landlords (particularly via that agent) look bad, which is true enough - this just offends my professional ethics if nothing else, feels like you have a vague responsibility to poke at other people in the same job as you if they don’t behave decently. Just a shame that there seems to be no official way to do it except by whatever tenant gets this place eventually making a complaint to the council, and given their obvious tenant selection tactics I see little hope of that happening. by Qpylon (Fri 27th Aug 2021 1:46pm)
  • I‘m not aware of any ”managed buildings”, have never known of one/known anyone who lives in one. Letting agents tend to be less welcoming of pets anyway. Am only aware of Housing Associations, but there’s often a waiting list for those! If you’re struggling to fins somewhere in you 30 min walking distance limit, have you considered looking at places near stations for the underground? So much quicker and more reliable than buses IMO, and opens up Govan / Gorbals to you (20-30min travel time including walking should cover large parts of those areas). Would that be an option? Was there anything specific that you’re looking for apart from pet-friendly (parking/possibility of even parking a car somewhere nearby, …) by Qpylon (Wed 18th May 2022 6:12pm)
  • Yeah, and if they pay the seller for the item in advance. Otherwise it’s veeery scam sounding by Qpylon (Tue 24th May 2022 8:12pm)
  • what are your requirements for a flat? Presumably furnished, but what about location? What’s your budget? There is an option on airbnb to look for longer-term rentals, and spareroom (if you filter by ‘whole property’) might have landlords more open to short term lets. Location-wise, your best bet for a cheaper place would be somewhere outside of Glasgow though, as rental demand in Glasgow is currently very high. Short term lets are always going to charge extra, because of empty periods and cleaning, so cheap and short term and in town, and a whole place rather than a room, is going to be hard. Particularly with the council cracking down on short term lets. by Qpylon (Tue 24th May 2022 8:24pm)
  • Guess you could lie about moving there for a job or something, to try and make yourself seem like a pick-me long-term tenant. Just seems unlikely to work well enough to get you a flat with how things are atm, and somewhat dickish to lie about it for a casual reason. by Qpylon (Tue 24th May 2022 9:05pm)
  • Depends if it’s a large corporate business or a ‘person’. Would not personally feel comfortable lying to a person who believed me and then felt a bit betrayed, vs a massive business who don’t even notice except to note it down in their void risk data. Just makes life harder for the next foreign want-to-be tenants as well. by Qpylon (Tue 24th May 2022 9:56pm)
  • If some of the places the other commenters suggested are still too expensive, have a look towards Clydebank etc. maybe. Public transport goes in a straight line \~parallel to the river towards town, and you could hop off around West End. Your daughter lives in a pricey part of town, and the £1.5-1.7k suggestions others have made are likely to be the best you can get round West End/City Centre. by Qpylon (Wed 25th May 2022 8:42am)
  • You won’t find a room for less than £250 unless there’s something wrong with it, or someone is going for way under market price. Might be worth it though, depending how long the commute is so where you are in Southside. Maybe you could cut a deal with a hostel, with how much you’d be staying there? by Qpylon (Mon 30th May 2022 11:38pm)
  • Early morning was fine, but apparently it got busy later. They had extra queue barriers set up in that area with tables and free liquid bags, for if the security queue stretched to waaaay before the ticket gates. Must be expecting chaos. by Qpylon (Fri 3rd Jun 2022 9:08am)
  • I know I’ve swapped open bottles before with other people in a tasting group kinda associated with Edinburgh universities, but that was informal and with people you knew. Still, as a last resort I’m sure that the coordinating members of a student whisky society would be happy to get them as a gift? I might be interested in buying some of them myself by Qpylon (Fri 3rd Jun 2022 3:10pm)
  • Think he went through the guys post history and saw some crypto stuff there, not random shit talking by Qpylon (Sat 4th Jun 2022 11:00pm)
  • Yeah, I think OP may have misunderstood the policy. Here’s a list of example standard items and stuff that can be bundled or bagged to make 1 item. The “up to 10 standard items“ for £35 doesn’t mean it has to be 10 of the same item! Though freebies on Gumtree are always a nice thing to do. List: [https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=53729&p=0](https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=53729&p=0) Microwave, ironing board, TV, chair, and mattress comes to 5 standard items. u/dadankako can check the list and add 5 more items to that £35 10 item uplift. by Qpylon (Tue 7th Jun 2022 9:56pm)
  • There’s a 6am flight from Edinburgh to Stansted that should do the trick, very pricey though! by Qpylon (Fri 10th Jun 2022 9:45am)
  • Tbf it seems to be mainly internet non-furries who’re angry at them. Had a chat with one today, and while discussing fashion he mentioned that he wouldn’t have the confidence to wear platforms and short dresses as himself in public, but add an animal head that hides his face and he does. The animal description sounded pretty spirit animal / animagus to me from how be talked about it (though he used neither of those terms!), somewhere between what animal best matches you or would represent you, and what animal you kinda are inside. The furries there all seemed to be LGBTQA+ and a couple of their friends. Think it’s how non-cis-hets are overrepresented in the kink scene and at comic cons. It’s a chance to show off a version of yourself that’s draped in rainbows or wearing non-everyday clothes, whether that’s fishnets or Fido. by Qpylon (Sun 26th Jun 2022 4:31am)
  • Thornliebank, Giffnock, and Mansewood as well. On the bus and train routes, so no problems commuting. Good prices for >1 bedroom. by Qpylon (Mon 4th Jul 2022 4:13pm)
  • So your solution to a shortage of rental properties is… even less rental properties? by Qpylon (Fri 15th Jul 2022 5:26am)
  • I suppose we disagree about Buy to Let. I’m a consummate renter at heart, who prefers private/small landlords where I can have more free reign over the property or negotiate with them. So Buy to Let is a good thing for me and similar renters, as it gives us more choice and increases the pool of properties to rent. by Qpylon (Fri 15th Jul 2022 12:19pm)
  • I kept smelling it off and on as well, kept thinking I’d stepped in dog shit by Qpylon (Mon 18th Jul 2022 11:33pm)
  • That’s blindingly white by Qpylon (Sat 23rd Jul 2022 12:52pm)
  • There’s apparently a weekly r /glasgow pub night. We could try coordinating to all turn up there the same week? by Qpylon (Fri 29th Jul 2022 3:03pm)
  • wtf did that get you?! … leccy and internet included? by Qpylon (Sun 31st Jul 2022 7:09pm)
  • \> I once had someone wax the skin off my underarm You what now Did not even realise that’s a thing that can happen. My sympathies, that sounds very painful. For the sake of my own peace of mind, when you say skin, how deep into the skin are we talking? Looks like a sunburn after, or…? by Qpylon (Tue 2nd Aug 2022 3:56am)
  • Some sort of special teapot for Yerba mate tea. Had to look it up as well, recognised the tea name and then went “wait, what? It’s made from a gourd fruit?” by Qpylon (Sat 10th Sep 2022 2:12pm)
  • OpenRent is specifically private, non-estate agent landlords. But yeah, all the new/coming rules mean there’s way less places available to rent at a decent price. Could I ask - is it just a preference (I have the same preference, private > corporate!), or do you want to negotiate stuff like pets or something? by Qpylon (Thu 27th Oct 2022 1:24pm)
  • They seem to have 4GB UK in stock again :) 1/customer, but that’s fair - reasonable prices and in-stock supply for those things is like hens teeth! by Qpylon (Sat 5th Nov 2022 4:07pm)
  • The council literally fills the grit bins so that they can get used on pavements? Not sure what you want to hold them to account for… doing their job in this case? by Qpylon (Wed 14th Dec 2022 12:06pm)
  • I’ve been casually browsing because am considering a move, and there’s definitely a lot of 2 bed places to be had for less than that. I was mainly eying up the south and east of Glasgow. Most places outside of the west round the uni, the centre, and Dennistoun, has decent places for less than that. South of Southside towards Thornliebank (round Mansewood) there seem to be three bed places, as well as over in east Glasgow (past Shettleston), in good nick and for a good price. Two beds for less than that are available all over apart from the priciest or most suburbanite areas. Even in Dennistoun, though I was personally partial to flats near Kinning Park or Mount Florida. by Qpylon (Thu 29th Dec 2022 10:04pm)
  • Remember that the £3000+ places are short term lets, unless they’re obscenely lux and well-located. • Just went and had a look and the ones at £2900+ are much less opulent than I expected! But a lot of them are houses or e.g. right in that crescent of Kelvingrove Park, or penthouses. Not something I’d ever come across normally while searching because the price premiums of those locations are way too steep for me (even for un-fancy flats… those are the priciest spots in town by housing cost). Wouldn’t really call them representative, like how Kensington =/= London. The furnished houses are more of a mystery, but maybe aimed at companies arranging a temporary relocation of employee+family? by Qpylon (Thu 29th Dec 2022 11:42pm)
  • You might need to split up, 2 2-bedroom flats will be easier to find than a 4 bed HMO. Rents are going up because of demand, interest rates of mortgages and inflation of fixed fees for the landlords, rent freeze meaning that places get advertised for top prices as the ability to raise in the future is uncertain, and less private landlords leading back to more demand. Hope you find somewhere soon! by Qpylon (Sat 31st Dec 2022 2:31pm)
  • That’s illegal. Suppose the police don’t deal with that stuff though, and small claims court or the like sounds like a pain. Enforcement of it is a separate thing to regulation though, so I suppose the shady landlords keep on while some of the rule following ones gtfo. by Qpylon (Thu 27th Apr 2023 11:29am)
  • I am probably outing myself as deeply uncool, but the only people I’ve heard of on that line-up are Goldie Lookin Chain. As they’re buried in the special guests, they must not be one of the ‘big names’ in it by Qpylon (Tue 23rd May 2023 10:15pm)
