  • The fares are as confusing as possible for two reasons. 1. So that they can claim their fares are cheaper than they are ( "from only X pounds") and 2. So that you get confused working it out and just pay the higher amount. Ripe for nationalisation tbh by Scratchlox (Wed 23rd Jan 2019 6:14pm)

  • I've been experiencing bouts of depression since I was a teenager, crippling can't get out of bed lose couple stone in weight sleep twenty hours a day depression. Not all bouts are like that but the worst are and its threatened to ruin my life (dropped out of school, college, university at least once each before eventually going back and doing what I had to do). There's also some other stuff. I guess what I'm looking to get is something to stabilise my mood, the anti depressants I've been getting on and off for the past ten years dont really change much for more than a few weeks. My GP is great, they listen for ten minutes prescribe and refer me to the mental health clinic, but the clinic itself is extremely slow, and has just stopped contacting me. I feel ok just now, but know that in the next month or so I won't, so I promised myself that I would see someone to try and sort this. I was off work for six months a year ago, and luckily I was able to come back but I obviously don't want to do that again. In your experience which fits? I'll be honest I said psychiatrist out of ignorance, I don't care who it is if they are the right person. by Scratchlox (Sat 27th Apr 2019 10:31pm)

  • There are a couple of reasons why gaekic schools are opening in Glasgow. None of them have to do with actually meeting a need to educate Gaelic uni lingual kids. by Scratchlox (Thu 13th Jun 2019 12:04am)
  • Worked there in 08. On the bad side I quite literally (as in literally, literally) wanted to kill myself every day before work, on the good side it made me finally pull the finger out and go to uni. Part way through uni I needed some cash, so I went for an interview with them again, had a panic attack just walking through the floor again. It might have gotten better since, but I doubt it. If you've got any other option, bar work, shop work, labouring, Uber driving, ass crack washing, do it. Honestly, don't work there by Scratchlox (Sat 15th Jun 2019 12:35pm)
  • A shame, aye they could be cheeky as fuck sometimes, but it's sad that another small independent store is gone for to rent hikes and Amazon. They where always a bit more expensive than the competition, but they knew their stuff and you could find some cool stuff if you where willing to pay the extra cost by Scratchlox (Sun 23rd Jun 2019 2:32am)
  • Because small companies face higher costs of doing business. Having one hundred stores doesn't cost anything like 100 times the cost of running one store. Those savings can then be plowed into reducing your prices. It's also likely that gforce paid more to buy stock than big retailers, on an already low profit margin industry, that makes it harder. In reality, gforce wasn't price gouging, they charged as much as little as they could feasibly charge to keep the lights on. It's a highly competitive market, not helped by the fact that the biggest competitor to brick and mortar stores literally lives in everyone's houses, on their consoles and has to deal with none of the hassle in the first paragraph. by Scratchlox (Sun 23rd Jun 2019 5:31am)
  • Never. The city is a totally skint and couldn't afford be liable for getting the building back into shape. by Scratchlox (Sun 11th Aug 2019 7:10pm)
  • Define nice. It's safe, despite having slightly rougher areas surrounding it. It's a firmly working class, lower middle class area. There's not a huge amount to do there, so your travelling into the city if you want to go to the cinema, pubs or cultural things. Buses (and that is the only form of public transport that serves Riddrie) are ok, but you will feel a little bit more disconnected by not being on the rail network. If you have a car though, that makes all the difference. It is right next to barlinnie prison, so if you get arrested your wife will be able to visit you easily. On the other hand you might not want to live next to a prison. by Scratchlox (Thu 15th Aug 2019 1:12pm)

  • Good. Council needs money, this is a great city and it looks like absolute crap in part because of the austerity local authorities have had to put up with. by Scratchlox (Thu 20th Feb 2020 5:48pm)
  • Sure. But how much more would they need to cut if they couldn't increase taxes more. by Scratchlox (Thu 20th Feb 2020 6:47pm)
  • I agree. But how much would the budget be cut if there wasn't an increase in tax. Look you can't get away from the fact that the city needs more money, and this can only come via tax or an increase in the budget from Edinburgh. The latter isn't happening. by Scratchlox (Thu 20th Feb 2020 6:47pm)
  • Tbh a better way or going about this would be to reform the council tax system, but that would mean homeowners paying more to reflect thebrise in home pricee in lots of areas of Glasgow. And that won't happen, because the government that does it gets voted oot by Scratchlox (Thu 20th Feb 2020 6:52pm)
  • Exactly. The big problem with Glasgow is that it is simultaneously a city with incredible health and social challenges, while also being surrounded by extremely wealthy suburbs that have their own councils. Those suburbs don't pay into Glasgow via council tax, but depend on it for employment, entertainment, and education for their kids. We need to come to a settlement with those suburbs, because we get a raw deal ATM. by Scratchlox (Thu 20th Feb 2020 7:21pm)
  • Haha. I meant holyrood, unfortunately we haven't the soft power necessary to make it a standard word in Google keyboard so it autocorrects it. by Scratchlox (Fri 21st Feb 2020 12:27am)
  • Local gov is devolved, and my spite doesn't go that far back. If we where serious about fixing local government in this country we could cut the no of councils in half by Scratchlox (Fri 21st Feb 2020 12:32am)
  • Glasgow? Probably wouldn't help unless we had some troops to annex the suburbs that bleed us dry and leave us to clean up the consequences of running a city. by Scratchlox (Fri 21st Feb 2020 12:30am)
  • Ofcourse it's possible some of it is spent inefficiently. You have in efficiencies in every organisation, the question is how much and is it possible to fix it? Council tax in this city is low, for a cheaper price many of us pay for entertainment we expect the council to run and maintain the public services for the 600k that life in the city proper, plus the hundreds of thousands that commute to it. So yes, while there may be misspent money, at some point you have to wonder whether the people constantly going on about it are just using it as an excuse. by Scratchlox (Fri 21st Feb 2020 12:27pm)
  • Elitist? What? by Scratchlox (Fri 21st Feb 2020 12:44pm)
  • If you don't think you have enough bins compared to neighbours get in touch with your councillor. Fact is we haven't had tax increases in a long time, in that time the city has fallen apart slowly but surely. Don't expect a miracle out of a five percent increase over ten years lol, this is about stemming the flow, nothing more by Scratchlox (Fri 21st Feb 2020 2:27pm)
  • I went a bit far with the schooling. It's not true to say that if you only work and entertain yourself in Glasgow your consuming almost nothing the council delivers. You very much are. It's a massive problem in how weve set up our local authorities, Glasgow gets to deal with the socioeconomic consequences of being a post industrial city and the ring of suburbs get to commute in every day to take advantage of the employment that comes with being a city. by Scratchlox (Fri 21st Feb 2020 7:23pm)
  • If your living in a place that's commutable you might want to just stay there if you like it. Pretty much the entire civil service is WFH at the moment and even in the best of times dfid is pretty good at allowing working from home with occasional commutes in. by Scratchlox (Mon 6th Apr 2020 7:34pm)
  • They wont sell you them without a prescription I'm afraid. You'll have to get your eyes tested. Only costs 20 minutes and it's free though, and generally they give you a free pair of lenses on top of what else you buy by Scratchlox (Fri 30th Oct 2020 3:15pm)
  • Yes. It's worth learning to drive. I'm 32, and have only just now begun learning. Unfortunately I've now had 3 test dates cancelled due to covid, but it would have made my twenties a lot more fun if I did. The reason I never learned befor was financial and ethical, I was skint and am still passionate about climate change. But I've come to the realisation that I don't need to use a car for the commute, but for the freedom. by Scratchlox (Wed 2nd Dec 2020 12:11pm)
  • I'm from Gartharmlock and used to run about the area growing up in the 90s and early 2000s. Easterhouse was and is a rough place, as was Gartharmlock, craigend and ruchazie where I currently live. But the thing about rough places is that the day to day life isn't especially threatening or violent, so it makes sense that you have good memories there. However, you also remember the poor quality housing, lack of opportunies and endemic poverty - and it's those things that push people into crime, out of boredom, or material needs. But not everybody is like that, even in a bad area, so it makes sense that you would have fond memories of the majority of people there - you where protected by youth, and your parents. The place is definitely better now, the Fort opening in the early 2000s really helped - and got me my first job as well, without which the rest of my life could have been different. But it is still clearly economically depressed, suffers from relatively poor transport links, educational opportunities and higher level career chances. by Scratchlox (Mon 7th Dec 2020 12:02pm)
  • Housing isn't as bad in terms of quality. Lots of flats have been knocked down, but more importantly the ones that were not have been improved tremendously by the mid to early 2000s the then lab gov had ensured that kids don't have to grow up without double glazing, central heating etc. Ultimately the post war push to move people out of the city was done pretty badly. But it's important to point out that at the time, getting a flat in one of the new developments was seen as a life changing thing. And maybe it was formyoir grandmother and that lingering feeling might have pushed her to stay after the increase in crime that came with the poverty of the 70s/80s and 90s by Scratchlox (Mon 7th Dec 2020 12:28pm)

  • Ofcourse. I absolutely believe in incentives and the issue with the housing market in the UK is that the incentives are fucking backwards. But it must be said that if every brownfield site i the UK was used, it would only be space for 1 million homes. While we need over 300,000 per year to keep ourselves "standing still". The point is we need to build not only on brown belt but green belt also. Green belt land for the most part isnt particular important ecologically, its been completely captured by cunts that want their house prices to inexorably rise. by Scratchlox (Tue 18th Apr 2023 4:25pm)

  • Ahh g-force. Once had them basically refuse to sell me a PS3 with a small hard drive because "that one can't play GTA5". Really weird vibes in that store. • They definitely where wrong as I bought it and it worked. Also it takes one screw to replace a PS3 hard drive there's not much of a headache (they told me this wasn't possible on the slim). • Even if I accept your premise that these dogs are not more aggressive than any other breed - despite their breeds historical use as a fighting breed. It remains the case they when they do become aggressive they are far more dangerous than other dogs - hence how many of them are involved in deaths. Unfortunately, all breeds of dogs are abused or neglected. But most dogs are less likely to react to this situation with agreession and when they do they are less likely to cause serious injury or death. by Scratchlox (Thu 6th Jul 2023 5:33pm)

  • What kind of weapon makes a thread like this? by Scratchlox (Tue 5th Sep 2023 7:25pm)
  • Jesus. Never read so much shite in all my life. I grew up in craigend, easter house, ruchazie and spent most of my youth in the 90s and 2000s getting terorrised by neds. And I mean terrorised. The border between craigend and ruchazie used to be full of drunk neds smashing fuck out of each other and anyone else that looked different. I wore baggy trousers, chains, converse etc. And spent my formative years getting KBs in the Catty. Leaving that place at night when the neds where in town was a nightmare, groups of moshers and goths having to shuttle themselves through the city en mass in order to have some sort of defence. Ned culture is worth studying. But it's not worth glorifying. It was violent, sexist, racist, and made a virtue out of stupidity. by Scratchlox (Fri 13th Oct 2023 1:15pm)
  • Yeah, the article tries to acknowledge the effect neds had on other youth subgroups. But then tries to justify that by saying that they where poorer than moshers and goths. This guy clearly has no idea of the clobber that neds used to wear. They where not necessarily the poor people in the scheme. by Scratchlox (Fri 13th Oct 2023 1:36pm)
  • TBF its more likely due to the shocking councils we've had and Central Governments' long-term policy of defunding local governments and refusing to allow them to raise funds via taxes. by Scratchlox (Fri 13th Oct 2023 2:51pm)

  • The argument attempts to remove all responsibilities from Neds for the culture of fear that they created and instead pins it on: the police, the schools, the government, the lack of unions, the lack of class consciousness, expulsion rates, legislation (ASBOs), the media etc. by Scratchlox (Fri 13th Oct 2023 2:57pm)
  • I'm sorry, but this is just nonsense. Neds were oppressed - I agree. So was everyone else in the scheme. Responding to oppression of any sort (economic, cultural or whatever) is a human impulse - channelling that response in a pro-social way is a requirement to be considered a moral being. ,Goths and Moshers, a subgroup that I identified as also consistent of mostly poorer kids who came from schemes - but it wasn't an overtly racist, violent or homophobic culture. Ned culture was. And it was because the people within it made choices. And their primary choice was to attempt to monopolise violence within their schemes. This is why they tagged their schemes in the same way a dog pisses on the ground around it's home - they thought (and acted like) they owned it. In other words, their reaction to the oppression they faced was to ensure that they would be the ones to oppress others in their scheme. So when the writer writes: "resentment for those who were deemed to have had more, was reflected in their behaviours ... Treatment and relations with other subcultures such as ‘Moshers’ or ‘Goths’ was for some Neds a way of expressing their anger at the ‘middle-class’ children who had come from wealthier areas, and who had more stable homes and families " This is nothing but a justification for the violence that one sub-group of people applied to another. What else where they to do, they had no outlet, they had to attack goths (ironically not once did I see a mosher or a goth with an item of clothing as expensive as a Berghaus jacket, a Burberry cap or the trainers they wore) He goes on to write that: " many of those who were Moshers or Goths were not middle-class, but they did not tend to speak like Neds, or rarely hung around in the same areas (schemes) as Neds " I wonder why it is that Neds didn't hang about in schemes. I wonder why it is that we congregated for years between the GOMA and Borders bookshop - no matter which scheme we came from. Wait, I don't need to wonder, it's because the neds successfully monopolised violence within their schemes - and if they didn't think you fit into their extraordinarily narrow vision of what youth should look like, you would soon find out. So we grouped together centrally and organically for protection. Half the people at the GOMA didn't know each other, but we made sure that we where in sight of each other. He also goes on further laud the community spirit of these people, despite acknowledging their capacity for violence: "The schemes were essentially places of belonging, and that extended also to the local populous. Where one might fight members of a rival scheme, that same individual might ensure that the elderly lady on the same street could climb the stairs with her shopping. Thus, there is a complexity evident here that shows one must be cautious of relating anti-authority with a lack of morality – something the media had intentionally tried to do." This, I'm afraid, is complete pish. Neds where not secretly very sweet people who spent most of their time helping the community and who only became violent on the borders of their community. They where people who chose to elevate their own status within their community via violence or the threat of violence - this is one of the oldest ways societies organise themselves. And for a while, it worked. But there's a reason why the politicians saw this as an issue they could campaign on - it was bloody popular with the people who actually lived among these people. I repeat. There are good things about ned culture, and the culture itself is interesting and worth studying. But it is worth studying as a warning. The kids these days are much better people, and good on them for not following a much easier path. by Scratchlox (Fri 13th Oct 2023 4:04pm)
  • Strathclyde polis where a disgusting organisation and I'm glad you didn't have a bad interaction wth them but many of us did. • It was a horrible time mate. Maybe I'm going a bit over the top because I was a kid that wore makeup and the chains and the moshers. But it was genuinely frightening to see kids dressed like me being battered, chased or even sometimes murdered by Neds. by Scratchlox (Fri 13th Oct 2023 4:05pm)
  • What are you talking about? People tag turf because they think it belongs to them. Neds where primarily street gangs. by Scratchlox (Fri 13th Oct 2023 4:12pm)
  • Environment means a lot. ALOT. But I just wrote a long reply to you that goes into this very issue and you ignored it. I deal with this in the very first paragraph. If you are oppressed, and you react to this oppression by oppressing a guy that you deem to be less powerful than you, or less willing to be violent, then you too are an oppressor. We construct our cultures, they aren't handed to us. by Scratchlox (Fri 13th Oct 2023 4:52pm)
