  • It pains me to concede that australian labradoodle is more of a west end/glasgow uni "dog" breed than a "dug" breed 😂 by buffmanuk (Wed 28th Oct 2020 8:51pm)

  • Electric is significantly more expensive. Gas is around 2.5 to 3p per kwhr and electric 14 to 15p per kwhr That is the cost per unit gas and there are relevant losses through the combustion process, heat exchanger etc but generally 3 times cheaper is a roughly fair estimate. by buffmanuk (Fri 20th Nov 2020 12:00pm)
  • Not quite, as if you have no gas supply you save on the daily charges for gas which are circa 20p/day. Using electric i imagine you'll only heat the room you're using rather than the whole house so that may make a saving? Efficiency of radiators and boiler etc also impacts, but roughly once you consider the above, yes. by buffmanuk (Fri 20th Nov 2020 1:43pm)
  • Don't think they have tattie scones in England (potato scones /"Irish potato cakes") Well worth buying for a full English by buffmanuk (Sat 16th Jan 2021 10:24pm)
  • Pinkston whitewater Centre do practice sessions there on the flat pool section if that's of interest by buffmanuk (Wed 30th Jun 2021 4:58pm)
  • Having lived in England for 7 years and being from Scotland I dont think you'll get "started on" but it helps as a conversation starter. I would say there is more of an anti English sentiment among small circles in scotland, that I haven't seen reflected in England. In student circles, there will be absolutely no issues being from England. There may be banter that you're immediately "posh" if you're a southerner though! 😂. But all light hearted fun. There are loads of great places in Glasgow and generally the people are incredibly helpful /friendly. Edit: if you're going to Glasgow uni there's definitely going to be zero issues. • I think the belief that I've seen on r/Glasgow of "southern England" /londoners inflating the Glasgow housing market has been significantly inflated. Seen it posted on this thread and a couple others. I think generally flats are much easier to get than houses. Pent up demand and people wanting garden space has fueled the fire for gardens/houses. Congrats on your house! by buffmanuk (Tue 13th Jul 2021 10:19pm)
  • Is there a button on the boiler which identifies a heating symbol (a tap and a seperate squiggly line to radiators?) It might not be set to turn on by buffmanuk (Mon 16th Aug 2021 11:54am)
  • To be fair, if someone is high quality does a good job and posts it to Instagram is that not worth paying the extra? With tradesmen I find you can pay a lot for not a great job so if its +20% for something you'll be happy with a long time it seems worthwhile to me at least. (if its true! I don't have Instagram or know that tradesmen, but like the pics!) by buffmanuk (Wed 13th Oct 2021 12:17pm)
  • I would never move anywhere and immediately buy, so it's worth renting first. Renting is exceptionally high at the moment in Glasgow. West end is a nice area (expensive!) with good transport links. Finnieston also (the side towards kelvin Grove Park) You might find that the rent/house costs in some of the nice desirable areas aren't any cheaper than England (e.g. West end) The weather is terrible (honestly I moved to England after 20+ years in Glasgow, the temperature is about 3 to 4 degrees colder but the main thing is the west coast rain - pack a good jacket!) The bad bits/cuntish people will have an "anti english" stigma about them. Most switched on people (which I like to think is a higher majority on reddit) don't care but there are a lot of morons on this topic around Glasgow. It is nowhere near the same in England. A lot of it stems from anti Union hate. by buffmanuk (Wed 17th Nov 2021 6:46pm)
  • Orro off byres Road/ Ashton Lane have some pieces of jewellery when I looked previously with the mrs. They were very helpful in store too. https://www.orro.co.uk/ by buffmanuk (Sat 18th Dec 2021 11:06pm)

  • I would reiterate that ranking tables are not a great metric for university (e.g. Measuring via entry standards. I've had mates that have studied both at Glasgow and strathclyde engineering departments. I studied at glasgow engineering. Id suggest the extra curricular opportunities are better at Glasgow (sports clubs etc) as well as the student unions for drinking and general campus. Mind you I'm not sure how much covid might impact that! @OP Id say go for Glasgow if you think you will be OK with direct 2nd year entry (if you have very good grades etc). I generally got good grades in schools (A's/B's) and found getting a 2:1 quite hard). If not I still think glasgow is great to study at and wouldn't be put off. If I could choose in your shoes I'd choose Glasgow either 1st or 2nd year. University isn't only about education and to be honest building soft skills, joining sports clubs eg. Imo more important (and making sure to get a 2;1 minimum) by buffmanuk (Fri 24th Dec 2021 7:36pm)
  • You realise that faslane and nuclear subs are based offshore so they can launch a nuclear weapons from remote locations? Downside is Russia have similar capability 😂 Your concern about faslane being bombed is less likely than a bigger target e.g. London or "warning" shots in the North Sea between UK and Denmark. by buffmanuk (Mon 28th Feb 2022 4:05pm)
  • Orro contemporary jewellery Glasgow has a good selection. My mrs got her black wedding band from there. by buffmanuk (Thu 2nd Jun 2022 9:20pm)
  • Why? A hot day in Glasgow at 25+ is fine (if anything I prefer it to 30+). The huge amount of rain (compare it to the east coast or elsewhere) is the main issue. by buffmanuk (Sun 12th Jun 2022 7:31pm)
  • Don't wear any open toed shoes to the meet. 😂 by buffmanuk (Fri 23rd Dec 2022 5:45pm)
  • Most likely old capped heating pipes somewhere downstream that's been tapped off the old radiator position (if they don't get hot when heating on). Its a plastic push fit elbow, it won't be gas. Could also try the hot water and see if they get hot. If so will be hot/cold but I feel that's less likely. by buffmanuk (Sun 25th Dec 2022 9:27am)
