  • If anyone has ever been to Boston, they done something with their motorways. Tunnelled then and took them all underground so you had nice wide open boulevards of green space. This is a great idea, but the feasibility isn’t how to to build it, necessarily, that’s fairly easy, it’s how to build it and deal with the traffic while you are doing it. I commute this part of the M8 and any sort of lane closure would be horrific. Sometimes though I think we should really just put up with it for the greater good. by fracf (Thu 10th Jan 2019 2:09pm)
  • While a lot of this remains true, it’s just not an issue anymore as far as I’ve experienced. I’m a catholic educated, atheist, rangers supporter with surnames for forenames. I’m 31 and no one has ever bothered about my religion since I was in high school. We have Kelly’s and Liam’s playing for Rangers. Every cunt knows what a Masonic handshake looks like so it’s hardly a secret anymore. Catholic schools will be a thing of the past in a modern society. It’s a modern world, nae cunt cares anymore. by fracf (Tue 15th Jan 2019 8:30am)
  • It’s definitely this. The White Cart used to cause significant flooding. The walls and 3 upstream dams were built circa 2010. No flooding since. by fracf (Tue 19th Mar 2019 12:46pm)
  • If it’s for the old firm game, which it is, a hotel bar sounds like a good idea. If you’re up East Kilbride way the Busby hotel is close enough. Might also be busy because of mother day though. by fracf (Thu 21st Mar 2019 8:08am)

  • Tesco does Franziskanner which is the best wheat beer. Sainsbury’s stock a surprisingly large selection of German beer, at least the big ones do anyway. Lidl and Aldi in my experience don’t actually have that big a selection. As usual, try the speciality shops, Valhalla’ Goat, the Cellar, Good spirts company etc. by fracf (Thu 11th Jul 2019 3:30pm)
  • Glasgow is a real uni. Strathclyde is a polytechnic. I done Civil Engineering at Glasgow and it’s much more design focused. So, if like most graduates you want to work in a consultancy, Glasgow is the place to go. Although, I work in contracting, so you know, what do I know. As said above though, it should depend on where you want to live in Glasgow, if you like the “vibe” of one over the other as they are very different and once you graduate it won’t matter, all that will matter is what class of degree you got and what kind of experience you end up with. by fracf (Tue 30th Jul 2019 7:06pm)

  • I done one down near the Trongate, just outside the sheriff court. Can’t quite remember the name of it but it was very good. Wasnt just a room, they had actors put on a bit of a show and everything and the rooms themselves were pretty tough. Would recommend. by fracf (Fri 9th Aug 2019 7:29pm)

  • Auctioneers in Glasgow, just off George Square. Rangers pub but you won’t find any colours in it. by fracf (Sat 31st Aug 2019 1:25pm)
  • By the looks of it. £100 is your float, a one off payment so you won’t be charged that again. Your invoice is the amount you will pay per quarter/annual/whatever, so this will be your regular fee. This is paid in advance, so that’s why you’re paying it. The other charge is presumably because you moved in just after they billed the previous owner for the quarter, so you’re due a back payment to them. FWIW, if there are only 9 of you in the block it should be easy to get rid of your factor and get someone cheaper. My old house had a factor for the entire estate, and some guy, fair fucks to him, lettered 100 odd houses and got it changed. Went from paying £400 off a year to something like £150. It’s well worth doing, if only because factors are robbing cunts. by fracf (Mon 16th Sep 2019 8:44pm)
  • You’d need to ask your factor. I presume from the bill you moved in a few months ago? If so you’re paying for the time from when you moved in to when the next payment is due. Say payment is due on September, and you moved in in June, you owe them from June to September. by fracf (Mon 16th Sep 2019 9:11pm)

  • One of two things will happen. You’ll buy loads of sweets and no one will come to your door. Or You’ll not buy any sweets and get besieged by weans. There’s no rhyme not reason to this but it rips my fucking knitting each year. And every year I carve a fucking pumpkin and stick it outside. Doesn’t seem to make a difference. Anyway, £10-£15 should get you a decent haul. by fracf (Sat 19th Oct 2019 2:14pm)
  • Childcare vouchers are no longer a thing, but you can claim basic tax relief back on what you pay your nursery if you pay through a government account. Search for “get tax free childcare” and it should come up. by fracf (Fri 1st Nov 2019 10:18am)

  • I’ve done it. Was actually the first one of ever done. Have subsequently done another one so I can now compare. As soon as you open the door at grave escape, you’re in it, basically. There is no reception or anything. You chap the door and in you go. There’s some actors that are in character from the get go. Don’t want to let on too much, but it’s certainly entertaining. Also, it’s not all padlocks and codes, the things you need to figure out have a bit more thought into them, which makes it a proper challenge. It’s a decent way to spend an hour. by fracf (Mon 11th Nov 2019 2:37pm)

  • The SNPs white paper advocated zero cuts to allocated military spending for Scotland FYI. Scotland is currently apportioned £3billion of military spending as part of the UK and the White Paper proposed a defence budget of......£3billlion. It’s a bit of a myth this that rips my knitting a fair bit. by fracf (Wed 13th Nov 2019 1:53pm)

  • Strathclyde Union is moving? Must be over 10 years since I’ve been in there but that’s made me pretty sad for some reason. Where is it moving to? In response to OP, I went to Glasgow to do Civils. Obviously I can’t compare because i never went to Strathclyde, but Glasgow is going through a huge modernisation programme just now and I would imagine that will spread to all departments and not just the buildings that are getting redone. It’s a great Uni in my opinion with the added bonus of being regarded as a traditional Uni. Ultimately when it come to hiring someone, all that is going to matter is the level of your qualification and whether you’re a weirdo or not at the interview. I think the days of people classing Glasgow as better than Strathclyde are predominately over. They’re at least close to being on a or. Pick which one you think you’ll have the best time at. by fracf (Tue 11th Feb 2020 7:32pm)
  • North of the motorway and Cumbernauld is frankly excellent. Dulatur, Westerwood, Carrickstone, Craogmarloch are nice neighbourhoods with plenty of greenery. There are 3 gold courses within a mile of each other, plenty of open green spaces and just enough local amenities to make it seem local. The train from Croy gets you into Glasgow in 12 minutes. The bus will be half an hour as long as it’s not rush hour, I can only assume that people who are saying an hour have never been there. That been said, south of the motorway and you can pretty much take the opposite of all the above. There are still plenty of nice areas but when people think of Cumbernauld they think of the town centre which is admittedly horrid and then the estates like Abronhill and the worse bits of Greenfaulds because they’ve seen Gregory’s Girl, and they haven’t changed since in fairness. As for OP, Cumbernauld is fine. £180/month in Abronhill is almost certainly not fine. by fracf (Sun 8th Mar 2020 8:44pm)

  • I’m sorry but this is just nonsense. GCC has for decades now been run by Labour and the SNP, the leaders over the last 2 decades have been outwardly anything but pro OO. We all know the OO is an outdated and frankly unpleasant organisation, but them being allowed to march has nothing to do with the political power in Glasgow. The political power has been there for a long time to tackle it. The reason they are allowed to march, is because like it or not, they have a right to. To get them to stop we need to educate people into not joining it and that’s a far wider societal issue than we can deal with on this sub. What you’re saying is just a pass to the authorities and isn’t correct. It’s governmental direction that is required and it starts with education. Blame those at the top. by fracf (Sat 20th Jun 2020 3:06pm)
  • Such as? by fracf (Sun 21st Jun 2020 10:11am)
  • Oh for fuck sake. SNP councillor Susan Aitkin is council leader. The only parties to run GCC have been Labour and the SNP. There is still no desire to stop the OO walks regardless of the leadership. That’s the key point. by fracf (Sun 21st Jun 2020 10:10am)

  • By back in the day, you mean 5 years ago? The shop right beside Dyke Road had someone shot. My brother lived in Yoker and I worked on a job there for a good year. We had a guys car get firebombed in broad daylight. Not more than 4 years ago. When I was a kid, in the 90’s, Yoker would be one of the shitehole places to avoid. My brother lived on Bouvre street for till about 2015 and it was absolutely fine. Someone did get murdered on that street which stopped him going to his work one day, but the only real dodgy bit I reckoned was Spiershall Terrace. Always seemed to be some bams knocking about there outside the sports centre when I was younger. On reflection, 2 murders in 10 years maybe isn’t a great statistic. by fracf (Fri 30th Dec 2022 11:14am)
  • Bit of a catch 22 for the University. Funding comes from the Government because they aren’t allowed to charge fees and the government don’t pay enough, so they need to take foreign fee paying students to pay for the university. by fracf (Sat 31st Dec 2022 2:25pm)
  • Apologies, the research aspect is absolutely correct. Point I was making as, you’ve explained, funding hasn’t increased in the last years so it seems, they have increased the student body, to make up for that lack of increase. by fracf (Sat 31st Dec 2022 3:07pm)

  • This isn’t a Westminster thing. It’s a Holyrood thing. Scotland’s budget isn’t getting cut like councils https://www.scotfact.com/ScottishBudgetHistorical The Councils budget is getting cut by Holyrood and more and more fixed Government spending is being directed from Holyrood while not having budgets increased, which means councils must fund Holyrood directives, free under 22 bus travel for example. It’s a great policy, but these cuts in services and price increases are the result of it. Your idea makes no sense with reality. by fracf (Sun 19th Feb 2023 6:15pm)

  • Without getting too political turning this into r/Scotland, we do have the money. We just choose to spend it on different things. Councils have imposed spending by central government to pay for central government policies. The trade off there is our local government services suffer. It’s an active choice we are choosing to make. by fracf (Mon 20th Mar 2023 2:55pm)

  • Honestly, I was probably a mouthy little shite up until I went to high school and got beat in a fight in my first few months. The idea that violence solves nothing is absolutely correct in theory, but in practise I’m a firm believer everyone needs a bit of a kicking in life. Not to inflict any pain, but the social embarrassment of being beat physically in a fight is how kids were kept in check. It’s hard to make that point without sounding like a monster and I’m sure teachers can’t agree with it, but it’s not a coincidence that the uptick in rowdy behaviour correlates with a gentler society. The issue is that gentler society has progressed to that point but he bypassed a collection of parents that don’t buy into raising their kids to be respectable. by fracf (Sun 27th Aug 2023 10:04am)

  • I’ve been inside it. It’s Yoker Castle, but it’s just a CSO (combined storm overflow) sewer. The Great Western Sewer runs through it, open. The sewer here is actually higher than the railway line, it’s why the banking on that side is higher all along this point of the rail line. The overflow pipe runs under the railway and discharges at the Yoker Burn at The Lovat Arms. It’s a pretty stinking building but a proper work of engineering. by fracf (Fri 13th Oct 2023 6:12pm)
