  • After having lived in the NL for a while, I'm tempted to say: cycle lanes EVERYWHERE. You need to change the drivers' mindset too and it's not going to happen if you hide all the cyclists in a parallel street and have them deal with all the start & stop at intersections (despite the fact they're powering their own vehicle). by gallais (Tue 23rd Apr 2019 9:55pm)
  • It used to be a small % of the population in NL too. And then they heavily invested in infrastructure and made it safe for kids to cycle to school thereby radically changing the culture. by gallais (Wed 24th Apr 2019 7:03am)

  • I'm 100% electric so cannot help here but let me say: double glazing does not makes that much of a difference if the walls are paper thin and the floor is not properly insulated. The thing you need to look at when you are flat-hunting is the EPC report: it will give you a much more accurate understanding of the flat's insulation than a cursory look at the windows. by gallais (Tue 4th Feb 2020 10:43am)
  • Looks like the bit on the cycle path between Addison road & (under) Kirklee road. by gallais (Sat 22nd Feb 2020 12:41pm)
  • * To the west along the clyde potentially all the way to Loch Lomond (my usual loop is Merchant city -> Clydebank -> back along the canal) * Up north along the Kelvin to Mugdock park (you're on the road for a bit after the West of Scotland Science Park on the way to Bearsden) * South west to Paisley (Head to Pollok Park & then follow the path). You can keep pushing all the way to Gourock or Irvine depending on the cycle path you're following * South to the Whitelee wind farm (Head to Queen's Park, pass it on the West side and stay on Ayr road until you see the sign for the wind farm about 20km later). You can also keep pushing all the way to Irvine in that direction by gallais (Tue 17th Mar 2020 12:55pm)

  • I had a bad night of insomnia back in December and eventually just said 'fuck it' and went cycling at 5am and rode on Dumbarton road to Clydebank instead of taking the cycle path. It was really nice, if a bit cold. by gallais (Mon 30th Mar 2020 11:53pm)
  • You're a good chunk of the way to a cheese fondue at this point. :D by gallais (Wed 15th Apr 2020 11:41pm)
  • Newcomers are afraid to go on the road and when they do they often do not take the lane which means some drivers will happily pass them dangerously thus reinforcing their fear of the road. It's complicated :/ Hopefully GCC's project to add new segregated cycle lanes will make things better: it's all about infrastructure in the end... by gallais (Sun 3rd May 2020 11:03am)
  • I do agree that it's great while the weather is nice but it's not terrible once it gets a bit worse. Winters get colder in the Netherlands than in Glasgow & wind-wise it's about the same. People are just equipped to face it (rain-proof overtrousers) and the infrastructure sure helps (e.g. locked parking garage for your bike at work). by gallais (Sun 3rd May 2020 11:00am)

  • It seems to be a fairly popular weird British habit though. Every time I go to the coast, there's plenty of people parked facing the sea just chilling in their cars. by gallais (Wed 8th Jul 2020 5:03pm)

  • Apart from KRK on Woodlands Road that others have already mentioned, Beit Zaman on Trongate is pretty good for the city centre. by gallais (Fri 10th Jul 2020 2:46pm)
  • Probably the best short-term option given the great bike shortage caused by the pandemic. I have seen people on nextbike as far as Renton, on the way to Loch Lomond. So you can definitely do quite a bit of exploring on these (as long as you're not going up a hill the fact they're heavy does not really matter)! by gallais (Mon 20th Jul 2020 7:14pm)

  • I always wonder about these superb models: do you design the thing using software like [leocad](https://www.leocad.org/) and then special order the exact parts required or do you just have a big pile of well-sorted legos to freebuild from? by gallais (Mon 17th Aug 2020 1:58pm)
  • I got this ['How to read bridges'](https://www.amazon.co.uk/How-Read-Bridges-spanning-centuries/dp/1408171767) little book at the shop in the lighthouse and it really does make you amazed at how they're pure awesome inventions. by gallais (Wed 19th Aug 2020 10:05am)
  • > melts into a puddle of goo. Reminds me of [Street Trash](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Trash), a movie where an offie finds an old stash of local equivalent to buckfast well past its sell-by date and offloads it for next to nothing on the local bums who all end up melting after drinking it. The special effects are really great and the melting part is not too disgusting as they used really bright colours instead of disgusting bodily fluids ones. by gallais (Thu 10th Sep 2020 9:25pm)
  • We need to find a balance between conserving listed buildings and actually making them habitable. For the longest time there was a "to let" sign for one of the upstairs flats. When you looked at it online, the energy report was like E or F. Basically only marginally better than a garage in terms of insulation... by gallais (Thu 17th Sep 2020 12:36pm)
  • The exact spot where I fell last fall when I cornered on wet leaves. Smashed my mudguard, bent my rear derailleur and got some nice road rash that is healed now but still visible. So PSA: slow down on your bike way before that 90° corner at the end of the path just before the former heliport. by gallais (Tue 6th Oct 2020 6:01pm)

  • > If the cycle path is safe then cyclists should use them. It depends. A recreational cyclist riding at 25mph on a path with commuters and kids is more dangerous than them going at the same speed on a road with, say, a 30mph speed limit. by gallais (Thu 26th Nov 2020 5:09pm)
  • That is precisely why I am saying that roadies doing these kind of speeds should not be forced to go on the cycle path where they would be a danger to others. by gallais (Thu 26th Nov 2020 5:43pm)
  • There's a slight downhill when you're riding from Queen's park to the city centre along the South City Way. Going at 25mph only puts you [in the top 5%](https://www.strava.com/segments/12975850). by gallais (Thu 26th Nov 2020 6:30pm)
  • I think that by donning lycra you're making it pretty clear you value your comfort on the bike more than what people think you look like. You're getting downvoted not because people are precious but because you're acting like a belligerent asshole. by gallais (Thu 26th Nov 2020 8:37pm)
  • At the very beginning the cycle path on Sauchiehall street was near unusable because of all the people wandering into it. But it's getting better. Hopefully this type of infrastructure will be so commonplace in the near future that everyone will be quite used to them. by gallais (Fri 27th Nov 2020 10:20am)
  • I don't understand the people aggressively telling me to get a bell when I slowed down to a near stop until they noticed me or I was close enough to just say "sorry" without having to shout. I don't mind slowing down on the shared paths: they're shared! by gallais (Fri 27th Nov 2020 1:18pm)

  • I don't remember seeing them in Glasgow over the past few years. They still have [wee booths in Dundee](https://i.imgur.com/ZwEaPKj.jpg) where they sell the two local newspapers. No one is shouting though and I am not convinced they'll find someone to take over once the current ones retire. by gallais (Tue 22nd Dec 2020 10:06am)
  • > If it's just farmland, you could go in many directions, but south to Renfrewshire/Ayrshire is a good shout. The Whitelee windfarm is also a nice trip. Poor cycle lane in Shawlands that turns into a nice one around Giffnock and finally a full blown secluded cycle path after crossing the M77. In normal circumstances you can grab coffee & cake at the visitor centre before heading back. by gallais (Sat 16th Jan 2021 2:58am)
  • You can head north along the Kelvin to Craigmaddie reservoir in Milngavie. You're on shared pedestrian / bike paths most of the way except for a short while after the West of Scotland Science Park until you connect back to the Bears way cycle route in Bearsden. You can then cycle around the reservoir & reach Mugdock park like someone mentioned via quiet forest trails. Edit: you may want to have a look at [komoot](https://www.komoot.com/discover/Glasgow/@55.8611470%2C-4.2499890?distance=5) where people share their tours. Their planning tool is pretty good and you can get the app to act as a GPS guide during your trip. by gallais (Sat 16th Jan 2021 2:52am)
  • The shared pedestrian / cycle path turns into a segregated cycle path [right by the East Renfrewshire Golf Club](https://www.google.com/maps/@55.7544934,-4.3583048,3a,75y,338.89h,87.11t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1swWoq5cUvtmh6dIEznaDm3w!2e0!7i16384!8i8192) but you have a nice lane from [right after the big roundabout at the intersection of Ayr Rd and Eastwoodmains Rd in Giffnock](https://www.google.com/maps/@55.7955778,-4.3017858,3a,75y,182.46h,80.73t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sVqnbxuH1s0Kq02d9W1_4hw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192). Before that you really need to not be afraid to take the lane as the anorexic cycle lane painted on the road will put you right into the danger zone if someone in a parked car opens their door. by gallais (Sat 16th Jan 2021 12:48pm)
  • > Not 100% sure what the rules are on crossing council borders during exercise that starts and ends at home, [It's fine](https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/). In the sports and exercise section at the bottom: > You can travel for local outdoor sport or exercise such as meeting another person, walking, cycling, golf or running that starts and finishes at the same place (which can be up to 5 miles from the boundary of your local authority area), as long as you abide by the rules on meeting other households. My understanding is that this means that you're allowed to go through another town, but you should not stop to e.g. buy some food. Which makes sense: the whole point of the authorisation is that you cover a lot of ground by bike in a pretty secure way given that you're not interacting with other people. A café stop would ruin that non-interaction. So pack some extra food and tubes in your pockets! by gallais (Sun 17th Jan 2021 1:23pm)
  • > I suspect claiming that back will be a bastard In my experience the council has always been very fair, even retroactively applying reductions I was entitled to (but had not claimed at the time because I couldn't find the form) without making a fuss. Therefore please think carefully about whether you need to use public transport for travel to exercise, meet friends and family or other leisure activities. • > I actual hate collections in this country it's a joke that anyone thinks this is a good system. It's not the country, it's Glasgow. I've moved to Dundee and we only have one big general waste bin for 30+ flats but it's picked up 3 times a week. Food waste for composting is at the end of the street, glass is a few streets over and the rest of the recycling needs to also be taken a few streets over to a small recycling center where you sort paper / plastic / metal. It's pretty annoying to figure out when you arrive but it beats my old bin storage in Glasgow where you couldn't reach the ones at the back so the ones at the front kept overflowing and every couple of months the factor would need to do a deep clean and charge everyone for it. by gallais (Fri 23rd Jul 2021 12:08am)

  • I moved to Dundee 3 years ago and registering was super simple. Now I'm back in Glasgow and I've spent one hour on the website full of dead links without being able to find the form. I did manage to register for the single person discount so hopefully they'll pick up on that and do both registrations at once. Now I am starting to understand why the letting agents were trying to shill a private company doing all of this for you. I guess having horrible services is good for the economy as it creates opportunities for new "jobs". by gallais (Sat 18th Mar 2023 12:20pm)

  • > At least we got a cycle path connection 😒 that's nice Unironically yes. I take it everyday to go to work and it's way more safe than heading up the hill on St Vincent street with all the car traffic (and the red lights halfway up). by gallais (Thu 3rd Aug 2023 9:01pm)
  • Good shout. That being said if OP arrives on the lower level, there are lifts to the upper one. by gallais (Fri 4th Aug 2023 9:08am)
  • That's strange. Every flat in my building got a letter from "Get Ready Glasgow" about a month ago even though I'm only on the boundary of the local exclusion zone. It lists the closed roads, the various events impacting the zone, the rules for personal vehicle use, accessibility requirements, impact on public services, business information, lists 4 separate public information sessions held in mid-July, and includes a map of the zone's boundaries. There's their email, phone number, and website listed at the bottom of each page. by gallais (Fri 4th Aug 2023 8:05pm)

  • Some pedestrians hate when you ring a bell because they treat it as you telling them to "fuck off" but some will also complain if you don't have a bell and simply slow down, announce you're behind them, and wait for them to let you pass. There's literally no winning apart from not existing at all and people like OP will then add insult to injury by writing these kind of moany posts. by gallais (Mon 7th Aug 2023 11:29am)
  • I don't have a bell because in my experience it triggers either a deer-in-the-headlights or an adversarial reaction. I announce I'm coming up (people react better to a human voice) and slow down (to a full stop if necessary) if there isn't a timely reaction. by gallais (Mon 7th Aug 2023 11:44am)
  • > The real answer though is that shared paths are just shite and neither cyclists nor peds should have to share with another class of vehicle/road user. The problem is that some urban planners see this as a feature. E.g. for the new Broughty Ferry cycle path in Dundee, they explicitly designed it to be shared as a "traffic calming" feature i.e. using pedestrians as free speed bumps... by gallais (Mon 7th Aug 2023 1:32pm)

  • It's not that hard to do yourself. Go to one of the fancy cheese shops in the west end and ask them for a recommendation of 3 cheeses for a fondue. Get yourself some garlic and a dry white wine, cut some bread in cubes and let it go stale and you're cooking! I like to start by sautéing the minced garlic in butter and then turning the fatty mess into a roux (using milk at first and then mostly white wine) before adding in the chopped cheeses and stirring while they melt. Word of caution though: it's way too easy to eat too much of it and then feel horribly heavy for the rest of the evening. by gallais (Fri 15th Sep 2023 6:34pm)

  • > Hundreds of objections were submitted in response to the plans with councillors Christy Mearns, Angus Millar, Yorkhill and Kelvingrove Community Council and the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland among those voicing their concerns. What were the objections? I'm surprised the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland is objecting to a car park being nuked. by gallais (Fri 29th Sep 2023 11:17am)

  • I have used the cycle lane on Bisland drive a couple of times and it is quite nice given how wide it is but it is indeed super filthy which is less than reassuring when you're arriving at great speed (fairly long downhill) to a 90° turn before the dark canal underpass. Perfect spot to lose traction on debris and crash. I have naturally always slowed down but even then it's not a relaxing experience. by gallais (Sun 5th Nov 2023 6:07pm)
  • > What are they doing there now? Office space for startups & other tech companies: rebranded as [the Met tower](https://bruntwood.co.uk/our-locations/glasgow/met-tower/) and touting its proximity to Strathclyde & Caledonian as a way for tech projects to recruit / do knowledge exchange. They also mention "access to finance and funding" but I'm not sure what they mean by it. by gallais (Sun 12th Nov 2023 10:23am)
  • > High Street proposals are currently in their infancy with options to accommodate cycling infrastructure being formalised as part of the concept design process that commended in October 2023. 👀 The up-hill on High Street is pretty dangerous given you're automatically slower and cars get impatient. • Be aware that the app sometimes makes mistakes (e.g. it automatically fines you and claims a bike was returned outside of a station). If that happens don't panic: you can simply contest it through the app and they usually act quickly and refund you. • > When we moved in we were told the bins will be collected twice per week. I doubt that's true. Did you check the [council's website with the calendar](https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/forms/refuseandrecyclingcalendar/AddressSearch.aspx)? In mine it's every 8 days for standard waste and 16 days for recycling. I was in a similar situation as you and had my cardboard boxes in a corner for a wee while (and then took them down on the exact day after collection). The issue is that lots of people do not bother demo-ing their boxes and they end up taking way more space than necessary thus filling up the bins super quickly. by gallais (Wed 29th Nov 2023 9:20am)
  • > just spurs the universities to keep recruiting heavily for overseas students You're mistaking consequences for causes: universities are recruiting heavily fees-paying students because of structural under funding. The luxury student accommodation is not the cause, it's the second order consequences when investors realise there's now a market of literally dozens of thousands of students. by gallais (Wed 6th Dec 2023 9:13am)
