  • I think it's much clearer for nations like that though, which is why it's a fair enough question. i.e. Is Tikka Masala actually Scottish? Some folks might think so... others not. by unexpectedbowtie (Thu 11th Jul 2019 8:07pm)
  • Nobody's said that. The point is that while there are clear and obvious cuisines associated with Spain, or Italy, or France, or Greece, or many other places - the same isn't true of Scotland. There are a few dishes, aye, but as a collection or set of foods it isn't anywhere near as well known or universally understood. It's a fair question to ask what sort of things you understand to be Scottish because of that - and it seemed like you were a bit sarcastic with them needlessly. by unexpectedbowtie (Thu 11th Jul 2019 8:17pm)

  • Your problem will come if you need to get a reference tied to the tenancy, or if there is anything dodgy going on with Council tax etc - them paying it/pretending it's an unoccupied second home, blah blah. These kind of things are what you don't notice at first but then become obvious very quickly when you have to do something official and can't provide the required official evidence of extended tenancy. e.g. dealings with the Home Office, Council, etc. by unexpectedbowtie (Tue 12th May 2020 8:48pm)

  • These costs are often massively over-inflated. As a group of flat owners you should seek legal advice to represent you. For a relatively modest sum you will no doubt save a significant figure in the long run. A common tactic is for unnecessary costs to be tagged onto essential repairs, which could be done much cheaper individually. Factors often have an incentive to go with certain building firms, and so won't do the leg work for you. I wouldn't refuse to pay unless you are sure the work is unnecessary, and you take advice on that. You might not have to pay up front, but if the work is deemed essential then the other homeowners will need to cover your shortfall. This will make you a) unpopular and b) they will potentially (probably) take legal action to recover their costs (plus legal fees) after the work is completed. A bad situation. by unexpectedbowtie (Mon 24th Aug 2020 8:07pm)

  • I've had lots of friends stay here. It can be a bit rough, but it's not a no-go area by any stretch of the imagination. It is very quiet, at night especially, so I wouldn't recommend walking home alone if you're out at pubs etc late, but other than that. by unexpectedbowtie (Thu 3rd Dec 2020 11:54pm)

  • You are liable for it until they confirm the exemption. The safest thing to do is to pay it. You should get it refunded afterwards, though it is unfortunate, and a pain in the ass. It's worth knowing, because if you call up they will just tell you this, as it's written on the documentation. by unexpectedbowtie (Thu 17th Dec 2020 1:04am)

  • To be fair, growing up in Glasgow I always thought this was BS, until I travelled extensively, and realised that people in Glasgow generally are friendlier/chattier in a more genuine way. Other places are more 'polite' or fake nice on the surface, but after the social pleasantries, couldn't give a fuck. by unexpectedbowtie (Sun 7th Mar 2021 2:38pm)

  • To be fair the key point is she was registered as homeless, so has to take the let. It wasn't like she viewed it and though: "Oh this looks lovely!" and is now complaining. She only managed to get the previous one over-turned because the HA hadn't followed procedures. She has witheld rent based on the state of the place, so they won't approve a transfer. by unexpectedbowtie (Tue 30th Mar 2021 9:40pm)
  • It isn't. Glasgow CC removed the limited licensing exception last year because there was 'too much anti-social behaviour reported in the parks as a result'. The anti-social behaviour in question was people drinking the pints. Not fighting. Not stabbing a granny. Just drinking the pints. by unexpectedbowtie (Sat 3rd Apr 2021 11:57pm)

  • It's not just the strikes though. A lot of services aren't running or are reduced or taking longer. No review of the timetable until December either. :/ by unexpectedbowtie (Sun 20th Jun 2021 10:44pm)
  • They told me that the next timetable review is December. It's ridiculous. by unexpectedbowtie (Sun 20th Jun 2021 10:43pm)
  • I specifically asked them when normal service would resume on the lines near me, and they said they wouldn't be revisited until December. If that isn't really the case, their communications folk need to explain things better. by unexpectedbowtie (Mon 21st Jun 2021 12:00pm)
  • It sounds similar to the old 'no animals which will disturb the local livestock' nonsense that I had to sign for a rented flat on the Gallowgate before. I did surmise that the local livestock would be the other residents. A stupid standard clause. Don't see how it could possibly ever be enforced now. Definitely check with your solicitor to confirm, by unexpectedbowtie (Fri 25th Jun 2021 11:14am)
  • I suspect it's to do with the primary purpose of the lanes being for 'sustainable transport', and encouraging people not to drive in general. Allowing privately owned (motorised) vehicles which aren't performing a service to use them would go against that aim. There is some question about why taxis should be given a pass, but I don't make the rules... by unexpectedbowtie (Thu 8th Jul 2021 2:05am)
  • I wouldn't advise anybody to live there. I've had friends who stayed there and had constant issues with neighbours. Drug dealers or their clients constantly ringing their bell, getting threatened by people in the lift... the lift being smeared in shit or piss... flats near them going up in flames or other general madness which Cube just ignored. Lots of good people live there and Living Rent are a helpful organisation, but it would be a last resort choice from my humble opinion. by unexpectedbowtie (Tue 3rd Aug 2021 5:37pm)

  • so literally nothing to do with the shortage of 'cheap migrant workers' and the introduction of additional paperwork for cross border working... the kind that... ye know... truckers are...? by unexpectedbowtie (Sat 25th Sep 2021 3:09am)
  • Jesus Christ what a comparison. by unexpectedbowtie (Sat 25th Sep 2021 3:14am)
  • Except that isn't the case here. There are very real shortages of workers due to the increased red tape relating to cross border transactions thanks to Brexit. There are specific product shortages which have been creeping in for months. This isn't some quick panic buy situation, and it's going to get worse. by unexpectedbowtie (Sat 25th Sep 2021 3:14am)
  • No. Supply chain issues are real. This is not just a symptom of panic buying. It's clearly evidenced in a multitude of ways. by unexpectedbowtie (Sat 25th Sep 2021 3:12am)
  • The panic has been less than the reality. There are real supply chain issues. Compare and contrast what the supermarket chains said when it was panic buying versus what they are saying now. The shortage of drivers and migrant workers is real. by unexpectedbowtie (Sat 25th Sep 2021 3:12am)
  • In this case the shortage are caused by a legitimate, verifiable issue. Not panic buying. That might exacerbate it, but it doesn't cause it. by unexpectedbowtie (Sat 25th Sep 2021 3:11am)
  • The problem is real. Our local shops have had specific shortages of items that change regularly. They are trying to space out deliveries to avoid a mass shortage of everything, but it's really beginning to show. It's not panic buying to blame for this. by unexpectedbowtie (Sat 25th Sep 2021 3:10am)
  • What do you think causes a lack of work force? One minute the immigrants are taking all the jobs, and the next minute we don't have enough cunts to do the jobs? Somebody is taking the piss. by unexpectedbowtie (Sat 25th Sep 2021 3:16am)
  • You're right. The real issues were caused by panic. Panic about foreigners. Now the foreigners can't get visa clearance to drive trucks to deliver the shit that line the shelves. There are no single products missing. It's a general problem across all lines. by unexpectedbowtie (Sat 25th Sep 2021 3:15am)

  • It's been in decline for over a decade. The units inside have lay empty for a long time, and were only filled up by giving discounts to charities, art projects, and allowing the huge gym unit. The building is unpleasant, covered in crap like mould and bird shit, the awning is falling apart, and a complete eyesore. They haven't maintained or invested in it properly or being able to attract businesses. It's not a pleasant design or anything of historical importance or interest. I am no fan of the proposed replacement, but having to stare at the damn thing every day for ten years, and seeing how shabby and dejected it is, it is clear that they need to do something radical to address its massive failings, and have clearly decided that trying to save whatever value that some folk think it has isn't worth the capital. by unexpectedbowtie (Fri 1st Oct 2021 1:33pm)
  • There's an amazing Egyptian style cinema in the South Side called the Govanhill Picture House. It looks incredible... but unfortunately is just used as a warehouse/fabric storage place now. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Govanhill\_Picture\_House](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Govanhill_Picture_House) This is the kind of building we should be trying to save and repurpose... not the Shawlands Arcade. by unexpectedbowtie (Fri 1st Oct 2021 1:38pm)

  • A friend walked home after a night out from town to Kirkintilloch along the M80. Got lifted at Robroyston, dropped off at the Asda, then went right back on as he had no other way to get back. Furthest I've gone is somewhere south side, but one night I went to get pakora from spice garden which used to be over the water, and I couldn't get a taxi. I was so fucked that the guys in the Indian drove me home. by unexpectedbowtie (Fri 29th Oct 2021 1:24am)

  • The protest is related to the perceived lack of seriousness in which those attending are taking the issues, or at least, the perceived inaction of leaders. The argument being that immediate, dramatic action is required - not many years of political promises with targets which are set for decades away and don't really expect to be met anyway. by unexpectedbowtie (Thu 4th Nov 2021 12:12am)
  • I mean, I guess so, aye - but it's a bit of a straw man argument. That wasn't really the original point you had made. Plenty of the folks who are protesting have deliberately been walking, cycling, and taking public transport to protest. I'm not going to make any justifications or arguments on their behalf, but it seems like you are maybe trying to find fault there. by unexpectedbowtie (Thu 4th Nov 2021 6:01pm)

  • In general, however you are treated at the outset of a tenancy tends to end up degrading over time. If they are being awkward and difficult before you've moved in, this isn't going to improve later. These kinds of annoyances will end up applying when things break, or you try get your deposit back, etc. If you get red flags or are unhappy, then find somewhere else (if that is practical in your situation), because from experience - it will only continue, and add stress in the long run. by unexpectedbowtie (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 3:22pm)

  • A bit of a joke really. ScotRail have deliberately reduced their services in the name of the pandemic, and then never restored them once the restrictions were lifted. They've used the cover of COVID to make changes that people would have been resistant to previously.
