  • The good: Glasgow is a great place to live, people are generally friendly, open and up for a chat (vs. London, where people tend to have their blinkers on). It’s got great bars, restaurants and nightlife, and there’s been a LOT of regeneration and gentrification in the last few years, so it’s on the up and up! The bad: parts of glasgow are still very run down, there’s religious/football tensions, and some places you just shouldn’t go at night. That’s true of a lot of places however. The weather can be grindingly, unendingly shite, weeks of overcast and drizzle without any blue skies whatsoever. That’s particularly true in winter, when you have to deal with SAD etc. Alternatives: the west coast of Scotland is on average wetter but warmer, the east coast is on average drier but colder (with more blue skies). Personally I find Edinburgh too touristy for my liking, but it’s a great place to visit for a day from Glasgow. There’s Dundee too, but I’ve not really explored it. Then again, have you thought about Leeds? Friendly yorkshiremen who make some cracking pies and ales! by Ishmael128 (Thu 28th Nov 2019 1:57pm)

  • I think it looks okay when it’s been recently painted, but there’s a lot of houses where it’s been neglected (likely by a landlord who doesn’t care) so it’s turned grey and stained from roof runoff. • This spacious property [that we photographed with a fish eye lens and didn’t provide a floor plan for] benefits from natural light [from its windows which only face North] to create a sense of openness. A character property [hideously outdated], it’s unique charm [because no one else would do this to a place] is clear for the eye to see. by Ishmael128 (Tue 27th Apr 2021 4:35pm)
  • Sorry you’re being downvoted! We experienced this too when we sold our house last month: listed at 90% of home report to get interest, sold at 10% over home report. ...we bought it at 75% of home report (same value) 4 years earlier because the market wasn’t crazy, it wasn’t done up nicely and was marketed poorly (it was on the market for 4 months with two price drops, the seller would only sell to people who weren’t in chains). We did renovate throughout, and our style is in fashion at the moment for the type of property (modern rustic). by Ishmael128 (Tue 27th Apr 2021 4:45pm)
  • Yeah, I think it’s daft too. I think houses should be listed at what you’re looking to get, so everyone’s on the same page, but that’s not the status quo. We just did what our estate agent recommended. We ended up buying our next house at a fixed price. For the most part, every viewer was on the same page though. All the offers we had (bar one) was at or above valuation, and the odd one out was a first time buyer who was new to the game. They thought that just because we bought below valuation, that we’d sell below list price (let alone below valuation). Their best and final offer (which they angrily informed our estate agent that they thought was “a fair and good offer” despite being told we had offers over valuation) was 10% below valuation plus £1K. by Ishmael128 (Tue 27th Apr 2021 6:23pm)
  • Sorry, I should say before booking a viewing, we also asked the estate agent what the seller was looking for, and then took that number with a massive pinch of salt. That majorly prevented wasting our time. I’m all for bucking trends in the name of moral righteousness, but when it’s the biggest financial transaction of my life, I do what the bloke whose sold houses for 15 years tells me to do. Weaselly arsehole though he may be. by Ishmael128 (Tue 27th Apr 2021 7:02pm)
  • ...I’m in my early thirties and was only recently informed by my other half that that’s a thing. I cut my own hair for about a decade (~18-28), my parents didn’t tip when I was a kid, and it never came up in conversation! I just paid what they charged! Now I round up by a bit. by Ishmael128 (Tue 1st Jun 2021 11:59am)

  • In my experience, the bank still assesses the house to check its value, and if your offer over the home report is sensible, the mortgage will cover that amount. I’m pretty sure the “anything over the home report you have to pay in cash” is an English thing. by Ishmael128 (Tue 17th Aug 2021 4:04am)
  • Yup, blatantly disregards landlords artificially pumping up house prices by buying up all starter homes. The stamp duty holiday wasn’t as crazy in Scotland as England, but it should never have applied to non-residency mortgages. by Ishmael128 (Tue 17th Aug 2021 4:00am)
  • Having just gone through buying a house in the greater Glasgow area in the last few months, we saw houses we liked, called Santander and discussed offers 5-10% over valuation. I asked them about it and that was what they told me - that they’d value the house as part of the mortgage approval process and if ours wasn’t a crazy amount over then they’d take that as the current market value and allow us to mortgage the full sum. We ended up going for a new build so it was fixed price, but the bank still ran their own valuation based on documents and discussion with the builders that was done during the mortgage application process. by Ishmael128 (Tue 17th Aug 2021 11:12am)
  • My aunt works with asylum seekers in Stockton on Tees and we gave her a load of used baby clothes when we were visiting that she said was really appreciated. We tried to find ANYONE in Glasgow who worked with asylum seekers that we could donate to and were either ignored or told that they didn’t accept donations. by Ishmael128 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 4:40pm)
  • Yeah, I second this. Much better to meet new people where you can talk and it’s great to have something to talk about (a hobby). Meeting people in clubs while flying solo? I’d find that really daunting. Back in my clubbing days (eurgh, 10 years ago), polo was an awesome night out, even if you’re not gay the music and vibe was really good. I didn’t appreciate people pinching my butt though. So OP I’d suggest thinking about groups you could join e.g. sports groups (which would also help with depression) like cycling, running, rowing, five a side football etc., dance classes (Cuban salsa is very relaxed and a lot of fun), martial arts (Glasgow has an awesome shotokan karate scene), arts and crafts groups, home brew clubs, contemporary choir etc etc etc. Then make friends there and after a while suggest going to Polo with them and dance your arse off together. by Ishmael128 (Thu 26th Aug 2021 10:03pm)
  • I’m going through the same at the moment (early thirties, but a bloke). I asked my doctor and they said they’d do an NHS referral for me, but it could be a few months. I asked about private and they said it’s normally about £1,200, but I don’t know how accurate that is (they said they didn’t really have any experience of it). I’m meant to get BUPA through my work though so need to check how much things run by that route. Best of luck! I went through the whole 5 stages of grief about this (it’s a tough pill to swallow), I found Aspergers from the Inside Out to be very helpful though, it may help you too. by Ishmael128 (Tue 31st Aug 2021 5:55pm)
  • Holy hell, I hope not, that’s awful! by Ishmael128 (Tue 31st Aug 2021 6:25pm)
  • I think most people would up their rates for the duration if no one had booked yet, but I think it’s morally wrong to alter the terms of the contract after it’s been agreed, and cancel the booking if you don’t get your way. In most cases it’d be illegal, but I imagine there’s clauses in the T&Cs that permit this nonsense. by Ishmael128 (Mon 25th Oct 2021 11:22am)

  • Heya, sorry to hear you’re going through this. I was diagnosed last week, hoping to start medication soon. Im also looking for a therapist with adult ADHD specialisation in Glasgow. I’ve contacted a few on https://www.bacp.co.uk but have yet to hear back from anyone who isn’t fully booked. Sorry that’s not overly helpful, but best of luck to you :) by Ishmael128 (Mon 21st Feb 2022 3:42pm)
  • Glad it helped! :) Also, I’m based in East Dunbartonshire and apparently their waiting list is one of the shortest, so hopefully you’re there too? They stopped taking new patients for about 1.5 months due to Omicron, but even then, I was referred by my GP in early November, so it wasn’t the longest wait. Annoyingly it took my GP from July to make the referral as they kept losing my paperwork, but that’s a whole other story. Also, Glasgow has the Priory, where you can get private assessments - apparently they’re about £600-800, if you really don’t want to wait. Best of luck. by Ishmael128 (Mon 21st Feb 2022 6:25pm)

  • We didn’t inherit, but we got some help from my Granny (who sadly died when I was a teenager) - when I was a kid she put £35/mo for 5y into a children’s bond. By my late 20s it was worth £6k. My now-wife and I both did the max input on the “help to buy” scheme for ~2.5y, and that was (just) enough for us to buy our first house in 2017. Now that we have a kid, I’ve opened an index-linked tracker ISA and we put in £100/mo (which I realise not everyone can afford). If we somehow kept that up until our son was 25, we’d have paid in ~£30k, but it’d be worth ~£90k. by Ishmael128 (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 5:33pm)

  • I ended up getting a BUPA diagnosis from a doc at the Priory (yes, that Priory) and an NHS diagnosis the next day. I had been referred to the NHS by my GP, then I remembered that I had BUPA through work. I figured if I got a positive BUPA diagnosis, I’d cancel my NHS diagnosis, however the BUPA diagnosis was a shambles, taking 5 sessions each spaced a month apart, where the doc was 20 minutes late each time and hadn’t done any prep. By the time he’d finished, I had had my NHS assessment and was waiting the results. Both came back as a positive diagnosis, so I told the NHS doc about the BUPA diagnosis in order to ask what the best way forwards was. She said it was a good thing I’d got the NHS diagnosis, as otherwise I’d have to pay for meds each month as they wouldn’t accept a diagnosis from the Priory. by Ishmael128 (Tue 20th Dec 2022 12:50pm)
  • I used BACP to find my CBT therapist, he’s been amazing, ~£50 per evening session. @OP, sorry to hear you’re going through a hard time at the moment, but that’s great that you’ve recognised that and are trying to get help (I wish I had earlier). I wouldn’t say different therapists are better, but it’s definitely the case that you will be suited to some therapists more than others, so if you try one and it doesn’t work for you, don’t give up on it, either give feedback and see how that’s handled, or try a different therapist. by Ishmael128 (Thu 22nd Dec 2022 4:34pm)
  • The in-job salary may be lower, but I would expect the post-job “salary” (speaking circuit?) to be FAR higher. Look at BoJo, he simply raked it in afterwards. I saw someone asking on here why on Earth BoJo was being paid so much for giving a corporate talk, considering he left in disgrace. The answer was that it sends a message to those currently in power: >“Play by our rules, do what we say; you will be rewarded come what may.” I’ve no idea how you would ever police this form of corruption. However, I do wonder how many deals occur, where services are performed with the promise and/or expectation of future remuneration when you are under less scrutiny. by Ishmael128 (Mon 3rd Jul 2023 12:38pm)
