  • Haven't a scoobie. I've lived in Glasgow for about 2 and a half years. I only knew once councillor in my area and she's not running this time, haven't had anyone round the door or seen anyone in the street to talk to them so I don't know anyone's policies. My main concern is doing something about the footpaths as I am a support worker who often takes people out in wheelchairs and I really struggle with it. I've had to get strangers on the street help me to get the chair out of a pothole or up a kerb that isn't dropped enough. GCC is a farce and it honestly makes me want to move home. We might have punishment beatings at home but at least the bins get collected. by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 2nd May 2022 5:41pm)
  • Yes 100%! Also people parking in front of dropped kerbs. It isn't as bad when I'm along with someone but if a person is out by themselves they're rendered completely stuck. The state of things here is genuinely making people more disabled than they need to be. by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 2nd May 2022 9:29pm)
  • This is why we need more investment in youth services. Give these young people a place to meet up, discuss their frustrations with youth workers who will listen to them and hear them, give them activities that will let them take out their frustrations - like paintballing or outdoor adventure parks. It's our responsibility to engage with young people or we're just going to end up with disaffected hoodlums who turn into adults that think it's okay to beat the shit into everyone that looks at them funny. Societal issues like this need to be worked out and catching it early makes a huge difference. by hashtagbeannaithe (Fri 6th May 2022 10:17am)
  • I think that early intervention is key and that we need increased funding into youth support services. If you can engage with more young people before they reach this point you will see a decrease in this sort of behaviour. by hashtagbeannaithe (Fri 6th May 2022 11:30am)
  • Depends on their age tbh. If they are say 15 and under then their parents or guardians should be assigned a family support worker and be monitored by the social work department until they are satisfied that they are actually looking after them, they should also be made to work along with a youth probationary officer and put into mandatory 'at-risk of reoffending' programs (I don't know if Extern exists in Scotland but that's the program in NI). If they are 16 and older I would say the same course of action but heavier sentencing, like making them do community service hours. If they are repeat offenders then jail-time in a young offenders facility. by hashtagbeannaithe (Fri 6th May 2022 11:39am)
  • I am a carer and work with people who have dementia and YouTube is honestly amazing for this sort of thing. If you have a loved one with dementia PLEASE connect their TV to YouTube by hashtagbeannaithe (Wed 11th May 2022 11:02am)
  • Hi! I'm also from the North and I've lived here for a few years. It's not too bad here but it really depends on where you're comparing it to and where abouts in Glasgow you are. Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about it, you'll have seen worse at home. Glasgow is a really lovely place to live and everyone I've met has been really nice to me and likes telling me about their grandparent from Donegal and/or their holidays in Ireland. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sat 21st May 2022 10:09pm)
  • You're welcome! St. Vincent St is a parade route so if you're living near there you'll get the parades (learnt that the hard way). You need to remember that the absolute die-hards over here will go over home for the 12th too. If you have any more questions about moving over feel free to send me a message by hashtagbeannaithe (Sat 21st May 2022 10:15pm)
  • As someone who is not from Glasgow but lives here, no. by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 6th Jun 2022 6:26pm)
  • All day on a bus isn't less than a 5er anymore mate by hashtagbeannaithe (Wed 8th Jun 2022 7:04am)
  • This internal policy sounds like balls though because I've definitely had the last bus at night drive clean past me and leave me stranded at the bus stop. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 12th Jun 2022 10:33am)
  • "The also make efforts to operate most of their later evening services so as not to leave people vulnerable or stranded at night" Fucking shit policy there since I was left stranded and vulnerable at night. Maybe the bus driver thought it was funny to leave a woman standing by herself in the dark with no other way home. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 12th Jun 2022 10:44am)

  • Company policy is a heap of shit if the drivers don't comply though isn't it? My personal circumstances are that I work in home care so I get the bus a lot and know how bus stops work. I know that a lot of drivers are absolute stars but that there are a whole pile of them that aren't. Between refusing to let me on with wheelchair users because someone is on with a pram, despite "company policy" being that wheelchair users get priority, or expecting me to get them on without any assistance, not even lowering the bus to the kerb let alone getting out and putting the ramp down. Or just straight up driving past people who have hailed them down because they're late on their route. It's happened to me and I've seen it happened to others while I've been at the stop waiting for a different bus. And those are the ones that actually turn up. First bus are fucking shite and if I had any other choice I wouldn't get them. But I don't. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 12th Jun 2022 12:28pm)
  • No they are supposed to ask the person with the pram to take the child out and fold it up as a child can sit on a knee or seat but a wheelchair user can't. Same protocol as in place if more than one pram is on the bus. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 12th Jun 2022 1:19pm)
  • You seem really confident in your 99.8% statistic that you have absolutely no way of substantiating. Obviously these things are going to happen to someone like me who gets a bus maybe 6 times a day more often than most people, I'm not suggesting you'll never successfully get a bus in this city. But OP asked if the service is reliable and the answer is that it isn't. You might get home on the bus, it's definitely something they should chance, but I wouldn't bet my taxi money on it. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 12th Jun 2022 1:22pm)
  • That's good to know! It wasn't the case in this instance though, I get the bus from that stop every week after one of my shifts by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 12th Jun 2022 2:04pm)
  • Not sure what you mean? by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 12th Jun 2022 2:16pm)
  • Not every time no. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 12th Jun 2022 2:26pm)
  • I'm not, i just get the bus a lot so I end up dealing with shite more than other people. On the plus side I get to see how good some of the bus drivers are more than other people too. Depends on the route tbh. I've found some are a lot worse than others, 34a is the worst one I usually have to get. The main issue is that they just don't turn up at all. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 12th Jun 2022 2:34pm)
  • What time does it start? I'm a care worker (can provide proof and let you know of my training) and if you want to go I can buy the other ticket and we could go together by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 12th Jun 2022 8:22pm)
  • I get those taxis when I come through the airport at night. They're not as expensive as you would imagine and easier to just jump in them than having to stress over ordering a taxi by hashtagbeannaithe (Tue 14th Jun 2022 10:18pm)
  • I live in the southside and it's usually around £20-25 If I have an open return for the bus I'll get that and then make my way home from the bus depot which usually costs about half that. You can be waiting half an hour on the bus though and if it's late enough or on a Saturday it can be hard getting a taxi from the town. I find that to save the time and hassle it's worth it, especially if its more than one person by hashtagbeannaithe (Tue 14th Jun 2022 10:28pm)
  • New builds, while sometimes more expensive, are more accessible to first time buyers because there's none of this offering crazy money over the Home Report with them. They cost what they cost and if you can get the mortgage for one then you only need to come up with the deposit, rather than the deposit and a quarter of the price of the house by hashtagbeannaithe (Fri 24th Jun 2022 5:15pm)
  • Not everyone else starts off from a position of homelessness though. That's the difference by hashtagbeannaithe (Tue 5th Jul 2022 8:04pm)

  • Their lamb wraps are so fatty I get the scoots everytime I eat them but so nice it doesn't stop me ordering them. It's a kebab and colonic in one by hashtagbeannaithe (Sat 23rd Jul 2022 1:05pm)
  • Thanks for the suggestion! by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 25th Jul 2022 5:18pm)

  • These rape alarms are a really good idea. If you hold them up to someone's ears it'll disorientate them and give you a good opportunity to run by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 2nd Oct 2022 11:24am)
  • I was at a rave once where I was physically threatened. No one did anything about it because they were afraid of they kicked him out he would contact the police and have the thing shut down. Haven't been to one since. You might be fine but you need to remember that the safety of the event will be considered more important than your personal safety by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 2nd Oct 2022 11:22am)
  • Oh right lol I wouldn't call that raving I would just call it going out, I'm not from Scotland though so I guess it's just different slang. Yeah in actual clubs bouncers are your friend. They've helped me or my pals out anytime I've needed, especially places like subclub by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 2nd Oct 2022 2:07pm)
  • Mate any cunt can light a firework and stick it through a letterbox. You actually need to know what you're doing to make a viable explosive out of fertiliser and diesel by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 3rd Oct 2022 7:10pm)
  • Look it up, make sure you've bought the right type of fertiliser because obviously household fertiliser won't work, make sure the ratio is exactly right, make sure your detonator is actually going to create enough energy to creat an explosion rather than just starting a fire. Sure does sound easier than just lighting a firework. by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 3rd Oct 2022 7:56pm)
  • If I threw one at your head you'd probably disagree by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 3rd Oct 2022 8:02pm)
  • No you don't need a licence to buy potential ingredients of an explosive. You should need a licence for a ready-made explosive. by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 3rd Oct 2022 8:01pm)
  • I'm incredibly tired and fed up. I worked as a care worker all through covid, doing 50-60hrs a week and putting a lot away into savings. I still can't afford to buy a house and I'm less likely than ever to be approved for a mortgage. In the mean time I'm looking to rent with my partner and looking at areas that aren't necessarily the most desirable. Even if we can afford the rent, places are asking for £1,500 as a deposit which we just don't have yet. Atm I'm living in a flat share that's infested with mice and he's living with his mum. If I think about it too much I'll cry ETA : sorry you're going through the same, it's really shitty right now. I wish there was some way out by hashtagbeannaithe (Sat 15th Oct 2022 10:51am)
  • Buying the way you've described was originally my plan. I got a mortgage in principle a few months ago to view somewhere that I ended up not going for. I tried to get a mortgage in principle again last week and they halfed the amount they would lend me despite absolutely nothing about my circumstances changing. If anyone knows of any houses available for £35,000 lemme know by hashtagbeannaithe (Sat 15th Oct 2022 11:18am)
  • Aye but I still need somewhere to live mate by hashtagbeannaithe (Sat 15th Oct 2022 11:19am)

  • They sure do my friend. But if one ever turns up it will take you to the west by hashtagbeannaithe (Fri 28th Oct 2022 7:47pm)
  • I work at the Queen Elizabeth and the 8.10pm 34 to Castlemilk doesn't arrive *at least* once a week. It's a nightmare. I don't get home until after 9pm and I have to be in bed for 10pm in order to be up for work the next day. I pay £18 a week for the privilege of sitting outside the hospital for nearly an hour after my 12.5hr shift by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 30th Oct 2022 7:21pm)
  • I used to be a care worker and often brought my clients on the bus and I 100% agree with you. They would stop for us because I was there but rarely put the ramp down and only some would even lower the bus to help me get them on. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 30th Oct 2022 7:25pm)
  • Mate firstbus are a heap of shit. It's not a big ask to want buses to actually turn up when they are supposed to. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 30th Oct 2022 7:35pm)
  • Aye and what about when they don't turn up at all? by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 30th Oct 2022 8:12pm)
  • Belfast and Dublin. The buses might have been 10 minutes late there but they weren't 30mins late or complete no-shows like they are in Glasgow by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 30th Oct 2022 8:19pm)
  • I've lived in other places and the buses managed to run reliably. They don't in Glasgow and the difference is that its first bus - because they are a heap of shit. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 30th Oct 2022 8:15pm)
  • Mate I'm not un-emigrating because first bus are a heap of shit. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 30th Oct 2022 8:28pm)
  • I'm happy with the place I live and work. I'm just not happy with firstbus. Why the fuck would I move because of a bus company? by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 30th Oct 2022 8:37pm)
  • Not unless firstbus start running a decent service, which you don't seem confident they can do. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 30th Oct 2022 8:43pm)
  • Unfortunately I'm stuck with firstbus as I'm in a one car household and leaving my car in the hospital for 13hrs a day when my partner needs it is a bananas idea. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 30th Oct 2022 8:42pm)
  • People with long coats by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 7th Nov 2022 3:19pm)
  • Standing outside it right now at the end of my shift. Thank you by hashtagbeannaithe (Fri 11th Nov 2022 7:39pm)
  • Always do a second spin. Use as many clothes horses as you have space for so you can drape items over a few bars instead of one, the more spread out the clothes are the less they'll smell like damp. If you are turning the heating on at the moment put your washing close to it and then drape a bed sheet to creat a little heat tent. If you can afford it, buy a heated clothes horse for things you need to wash the night before and can't wait to dry (like a work uniform etc). I do all these things and it still takes a long ass time for them to dry but at least they generally still smell nice by the time they're dry by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 14th Nov 2022 6:16am)
  • I don't do it everytime I'm out, but if I have change on me I'll give it to someone I see. I try to always acknowledge them and say sorry if I can't give them anything, or ask them if they want anything from the shop because I only have card on me. I'll sometimes sit down and talk with them if I have the time. It's hard to see people suffering like that, I can only imagine how hard it must be to be in that situation. I've been homeless myself for a short period, but lucky enough to have had a sofa to sleep on by hashtagbeannaithe (Tue 29th Nov 2022 11:38am)
  • This doesn't really explain buses just not turning up at all and having to wait 40 minutes for the next one, despite your stop being 10 minutes from the depot it's leaving from by hashtagbeannaithe (Sun 4th Dec 2022 1:33pm)
  • I have a job and could go to this. I appreciate that you're just trying to say it's a stupid time for 9-5ers, which it is, but I am a pedantic bastard and don't like perpetuating the "self-righteous jobless student" stereotype of protests by hashtagbeannaithe (Thu 15th Dec 2022 6:41pm)
  • I used to be a carer doing home care. It's insane what bosses get away with. I was sent to houses where multiple members of the household required care, which meant my boss was getting funding for 3 separate clients but I was sent in by myself. Ended up leaving and now work in the hospital. It's a shit show here too but at least I have help by hashtagbeannaithe (Sat 31st Dec 2022 9:07am)
  • Tbh in my experience I find that people aren't split by age when it comes to this, plenty of young people not wanting to bother anyone and plenty of older people who want to make their problems everyone else's, and vice versa. I find a lot of it has more to do with upbringing. This comment gives me the impression that you're of a certain age and would probably be a 'difficult' patient. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sat 31st Dec 2022 12:29pm)
  • Very much agree with everything you're saying. I shouldn't have to pay out my hole for a service that a bus company cannot operate, nor should the drivers bear the brunt of public frustration. It isn't the drivers' fault that the company can't meet the timetable that they themselves came up with. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sat 21st Jan 2023 12:04am)
  • I don't blame bus drivers a single iota for this shite. It isn't their fault that first bus are a heap of shite, they're the ones actually getting me to and from work. Just wish I could get through one work week where all my buses turn up. Don't even mind if they're late. by hashtagbeannaithe (Sat 21st Jan 2023 12:00am)
  • The home report value isn't a thing outside of Scotland and banks all over the UK are raising interest rates so I really don't think it's as big of a factor as you think it is. by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 23rd Jan 2023 7:37am)
  • This is how buying a house works where I'm from and it is a much better system IMO. The house buying system in Scotland is Bananas and punitive to first time buyers by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 23rd Jan 2023 7:35am)
  • Anyone I know that has bought a house under this system puts in an offer, has the valuation by the bank done and if the bank don't deem it worth what you've offered (which happens a lot less than you think) they don't go through with the sale. The bank is generally always going to value the house at what you've offered for it so long as there isn't a massive amount of work that needs done to the property, and if the work that needs done is feasible they will give you the mortgage under the condition that it is rectified within a certain time frame, which is also the case in Scotland. by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 23rd Jan 2023 9:25am)
  • I am yes, that's how it has worked for every single person I've known that has bought a house. by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 23rd Jan 2023 10:07am)
  • That's how it happened for them, not my interpretation of it. The bank isn't putting a numerical value on the house, they're just finding out if it is worth what you've offered. The one person I know that had to put their own cash to the sale of the house and not just on the deposit was in Scotland. by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 23rd Jan 2023 10:11am)
  • Of course it exists, but only in Scotland is there an arbitrary number that dictates the value of the house, rather than the actual market dictating that. It's one of the main reasons I'm probably not going to settle in this country. I'm ready to buy now so I've looked into it both in Scotland and at home and I have a much better chance at home - albeit with a lengthier process. by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 23rd Jan 2023 10:16am)
  • If the offer you put in is too high then the sale doesn't go through. There you go. by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 23rd Jan 2023 10:24am)
  • The market by hashtagbeannaithe (Mon 23rd Jan 2023 10:37am)
  • Thanks for posting this. It's as helpful as it is frustrating. I was referred in March 2022 and was initially told the wait list was 60+ weeks, then 70+ weeks, then 18 months. I'll be on week 75 this coming Monday and seemingly no further forward. I just keep checking the post religiously hoping that something comes for me and being disappointed. Every. Single. Day. by hashtagbeannaithe (Fri 11th Aug 2023 1:29am)
  • Can I ask where you were able to find a number for them? I emailed them in September 2022 and they said they were assessing patients from August 2021. I emailed again July 2023 and they gave me a very vague email about waiting times being 18 months and that their inbox wasn't checked regularly. I'm now waiting over 18 months and no further forward. I would love to be able to just ask someone how much longer it should be. It's obviously running slower than predicted but I wish I was just kept up to date with a timescale. by hashtagbeannaithe (Fri 15th Sep 2023 10:26pm)
