  • As another said there was a refuse worker strike. The city centre has suffered under various labour run councils. The whole city has desperately needed investment for a long long time. A few years ago the SNP took control and started to change things, but all we seem to get is granite and brushed steel pedestrian areas and glass & steel office buildings. The character of the city is being bulldozed and replaced with various shades of grey. Poverty is rife in Glasgow, thatcher ripped out the guts of the working class and left us with no big sustainable industries. We used to BUILD stuff, our shipbuilding was the best in the world, now the Clydeside is being cleaned up to be gentrified. So those people you refer to as junkies are what’s left of a working class town with no working class industries. That’s what happens when people have no hope. by keltik7 (Fri 9th Sep 2022 4:53pm)

  • Don’t let the kids run wild and be overly noisy, match the tone and volume of those around you. We can typically spot an American a mile away, so just be chill and cool and you’ll be fine. There’s plenty of fun places for kids where they can go nuts, soft play, trampoline parks, laser quest, arcades, things like that. Lots of parks too. In the city the public transport is alright, outside maybe better getting a hire car. Visit some of the historic ruins and castles and things. See historic Scotland’s website. by keltik7 (Thu 15th Sep 2022 12:34pm)

  • Aye my friend was in exactly the same position and has ended up staying in my spare room. It’s absurd, his visa only allows 10 hours a week work, we thought it was 20 at first too, so double check that! Basically you need to come with money. There are student flats which are basically just like single dorm rooms, but cost about £100-200 a week. They are regularly targeted for their politics and being Jewish. The claims about posting dog shit and vandalising other properties are absolute pish. There are plenty of right wing elements scuttling around govanhill trying to cause trouble. This post smacks of their kinds of tactics. It seems to me you have a personal dislike of someone you don’t know and are just desperate to smear them on here to keep the drama going. It’s quite sad to see really. • What more do you want me to say? They didn’t buy the building, they rent it and the landlord is a prick who refused to fix the damp problem. They had to apply for funding and relied on crowd funding to open. They bought a flat up a shitty close, that was in need of attention and fixing up, not a mansion as everyone seems to think. You want a break down of their financial day to day records? Go look on their website! They fucking publish all this stuff! This nonsense is like a game of telephone. Fucking ridiculous. by keltik7 (Thu 6th Oct 2022 10:47am)
  • I’ve never seen them claim to speak for Glasgow, that also is absurd. Most of the people who live in govanhill aren’t born there either. That’s just the reality of modern city life. • Hey, I’m in a kinda similar boat to you, I live with someone who’s autistic but he’s self diagnosed. We’ve started the ball rolling for a diagnosis so he can get the help he needs. His family were pretty much in denial about it and didn’t support his needs as a kid, it meant it was a pretty toxic environment for him that’s left him quite traumatised. He’s a student now and not in work, so I have to support him financially too. Before he moved in, I couldn’t have told you the first thing about autism, I had to learn pretty quick. It’s a condition that means their brain just works a bit differently to ours. Some things feel bad to him, that seems odd to me, like touching dry cardboard makes him feel like throwing up. He loves cooking, but can’t handle the feeling of touching raw meat. He can’t manage the passing of time either, so he thinks 10 minutes has passed and it’s really been 2 hours. He’s always worrying about his social behaviour being odd, so he tries to mimic other’s behaviour to fit in, which means social situations can be extra stressful at times. The way he describes it makes me think of someone visiting a foreign country and doing their best to fit in with everyone else, while not having a clue about what’s going on. I’ve found that it’s best for me to just step in and do certain things, so I’ll put the recycling out so he doesn’t have to touch cardboard. If he’s cooking, I’ll cut up the meat, if we’re in a social situation, I’ll take the lead in conversation and explain what’s happening before we go somewhere. I just do what I can to make small accommodations for him to try reduce the stress levels to help him keep going. I don’t always get it right, and we talk about it, but I care enough to keep trying. It does feel at times like I’ve become a carer to him, which I didn’t originally sign up for. It can be tiring at times, which is where having outside support helps. It’s not ‘curable’, it’s just how his brain works, but with support he can get more out of life and reduce the things around him that are stressful and make him reclusive, and help him to understand how to fit in with those around him. Folk like us are called ‘allistic’ or ‘neurotypical’, sometimes you’ll find the autistic community can be quite snappy and defensive, I see another commenter referring to ‘red flags’ in your post because your language is showing you don’t fully understand the condition. It’s worth reading up on though. Just be careful to avoid groups like ‘autism speaks’ or one’s using the jigsaw piece as a logo. They’re pretty right wing and into eugenics to ‘eradicate’ autism. The community tend to use the infinity (sideways 8) logo more. Also the term “Asperger’s” isn’t really used much now (some people still choose to use it for themselves, that’s a personal choice and much debated within the community as Hans Asperger was a Nazi doctor who did awful experiments on autistic people). There’s things you can start doing as a family while the GP does a referral for you, as it can take a while. But try talk to your brother too, see if there’s sensory things in the home that are affecting him that could be changed. There’s good sensory toys and things that he can use to ‘stim’ (typically repetitive behaviour that can help to process a feeling or emotion, like rocking or flapping his hands), chew toys, fidget toys, things like that can give a good sensory feeling. Also if he is ‘stimming’, don’t stop him, it’s part of the process for dealing with sensations. There’s other things you could get him if he has sensitivity to noise or sunlight, there are ear plugs specifically for noise sensitivity. Smells in the home can be a problem too, so look for things like air fresheners or scented soaps or laundry detergents that could be causing him bother. He may not even fully realise himself what’s bothering him. There are also charities and support groups you could look at for getting him support within the community. There are assisted living facilities you all could consider. Some autistic people will just never be able to work, or live independently. There are options though to give them some independence in a home of their own. You may find he just needs a few things to be changed, that brings down his stress levels enough that he’s better able to cope and engage with the family more in the home. Look at support options for you and your family too. It can be a lot to manage, being a carer for someone and I suspect your parents will be getting on a bit in age themselves. It’s good you’re wanting to help him, he may need help to advocate for himself. I’d recommend going through the process with him and making sure he’s getting everything he needs and is entitled to. Good luck! by keltik7 (Mon 17th Oct 2022 10:30am)

  • I’m a truck driver, I drive all round Scotland and used to drive in London, we have absolutely no live traffic management here. They might think they do, but we don’t. It’s appallingly bad and desperately needed. Ancient motorway gantries that no one pays any attention to because the information is never correct or even relevant. We have a fraction of the traffic London do and somehow they keep the M25 moving while the M8 grinds along at 5mph every night. And why do road works here take 6 months? They getting paid by the hour or something? Glasgow needs a serious overhaul asap. by keltik7 (Thu 8th Dec 2022 3:05pm)

The roads are dead quiet, no reason they can’t have them out then clearing the worst of the snow and putting down grit for the coming rush hour. What’s the point of having fritters crawling through heavy traffic? Road management is Scotland is absolutely fucking abysmal, all year round. by keltik7 (Fri 16th Dec 2022 9:24am)

Although my 72 year old dad slipped and fell this morning too and ended up in A&E. • Your comments aren’t as fucking smart or as sarcastic as you think they are. They’re just shite. But to address your point, the ticket he’d have given away could be transferred because he hadn’t started that journey. What if he changed his plans and wanted to come back to Glasgow by train? His opportunity to do so was ruined by an over zealous jobsworth, who would not be fucking fired for selling someone the ticket they asked for. Do you have any idea how much protection in law workers have? I’m quite sure he’d have been a member of the RMT too, who’d have scotrail in a tribunal in a heartbeat if they’d tried anything like that. Seriously, no one was going to get fired for that. Thanks to the heroic efforts of this conductor, some other poor cunt is out £14, which I’m sure they could have used given we’re in the middle of a fucking cost of living crisis. But aye, feel free to keep scanning my account for shit to get angry about, fucking weirdo. by keltik7 (Sat 17th Dec 2022 7:16pm)

There are things you can do yourself to help manage and alleviate symptoms in the mean time. It’s not a fix, but it helps and it gives you back some sense of control. There’s private therapists that can help with coaching and behavioural training. Unfortunately this is the reality of living under the shadow of a Tory government, we’re all fucked and struggling. Well I’d have a very long walk (about a mile) to a bus stop to get a bus into Glasgow, then another hour long journey to get me almost home, then a half mile walk or a 3rd bus to get to my bit. 2/3 hours bus journey or 30 minute drive? Plus tradespeople are in demand. There’s money to be made if you’re prepared to go for it. Office life is unnatural. Get out and about and fix things or build things. Your head and your wallet will appreciate it. by keltik7 (Tue 3rd Jan 2023 6:08pm)

  • I’m in the same position, 3rd debt collection agency chasing me for £170. I don’t think it’s enough to be worth their while sending more than letters. Was the car park in Scotland? There’s rules for car parks about having appropriate signage visible before you enter the car park, so you can decide if you want to enter into the contract by entering the car park. If that’s not properly visible, you didn’t knowingly enter into a contract. So it’s worth checking to see if there’s appropriate signage. If it does go to court (also unlikely for a small amount), unless you get a judgement against you, it won’t affect your credit rating. by keltik7 (Wed 4th Jan 2023 7:32pm)

  • There’s plenty of haunted places that aren’t abandoned. It’s more a case of knowing how to connect with them. There’s a few ghost tour companies that’ll get you access to old buildings and give you equipment and show you how to connect with who’s there. The thing to remember with ghosts is, they’re people, and getting asked the same boring questions over and over again isn’t very interesting for them. Approach it with a good energy and in the spirit of having a conversation and you’ll get more out of them in return. Be careful with things like spirit/ouija boards though. You’re looking to give those present with you a means to respond, you don’t want to be opening a channel to the ‘other side’ as you may well connect with something nasty. Good luck! by keltik7 (Sat 7th Jan 2023 9:57am)

  • I used to work for first, left about 13 year ago to drive wagons. They pay shit, I think I was on something like £150 a week, I went to £450 driving wagons (and now I’m on about £750). Your day can be 13/14 hours long, dragged out with split shifts. The rotas were awful, you’d get to pick yours based on length of service, so if you were new, you got the absolute dregs. You also got paid less as a new driver, the senior guys were on something like £250 a week. I had to pay back for my license so that was coming off the wage too. At that time the buses were all ancient and would breakdown all the time, half the fleet weren’t low floor wheelchair accessible. The company treated you like absolute shit too. They fired a lot of new drivers, you don’t have much security in a new job in your first year. I was fired for running a temporary red light, even though I was already committed to the other lane before the light changed. Didn’t matter, it was a chance to get rid of me and get another poor sucker in and get another grant for training another new driver and suck £2k out of them. The place was a revolving door. I hated it. I’d be so exhausted I’d be falling asleep at the wheel, I wasn’t the only one. It was monotonous, you were monitored constantly, EVERYTHING you’d do was monitored, and you had inspectors hiding all over routes waiting to get you. Idled for 20 seconds too long in the city? Reported, sanctioned. No eating or drinking on the bus, the commissioner hated that. No toilets either. Wait 3 hours till your run was over to go to the toilet. It was the worst job and the worst company I’ve ever worked for. They would sell their granny to make a buck. Absolutely fuck first bus. by keltik7 (Sat 21st Jan 2023 10:51am)

  • This is why we need a proper separated cycle network. Cycling is good and more people should do it, but they need to be safe and protected doing it. by keltik7 (Sat 28th Jan 2023 11:45am)
  • Ah ok, thanks by keltik7 (Sat 28th Jan 2023 1:49pm)
  • Really? Ban all the trucks with blind spots? So tell me which ones don’t have blind spots? And how many of these trucks have you driven? by keltik7 (Sat 28th Jan 2023 4:12pm)

  • I think there’s a lot of dislike for cyclists because they’re as a rule, very poor road users. That’s not entirely the fault of cyclists as a whole, there’s absolutely no requirement for anyone to have any kind of safety training of any kind, to wear any kind of safety equipment, to even know the rules of the road, to have any kind of identifiable registration plates, or to have insurance. You can be a total prick on the road, damage other vehicles, terrorise pedestrians, run red lights, go the wrong way up a one way street and 99.9% of the time get away with it. We don’t have nearly enough infrastructure to cater to cyclists, which means other faster vehicles get stuck behind them which causes frustration and tail backs. And when there are accidents involving large vehicles and a cyclist, it’s very often when that vehicle has been turning left and a cyclist has put themselves (no doubt unknowingly as they’ve never had any safety training) right in the middle of that vehicles blind spot, and then the anger that comes from that is directed at the drivers of lathe vehicles (who do have to undergo rigorous safety training, annual training and regular testing). We don’t take cycling even remotely seriously here in terms of safety, which in this day and age is crazy frankly. by keltik7 (Tue 31st Jan 2023 7:32pm)
  • Most people in cars don’t have a clue how the road works either, hence why there’s so many accidents. If you read my comment though you’ll see my gripe lies with those in power who could, but don’t, change things. by keltik7 (Tue 31st Jan 2023 9:09pm)
  • Trucks these days typically have at least 4 cameras to cover blind spots, but they won’t always catch everything. Bear in mind, those “idiot drivers” work long hours round the clock to keep you clothed and fed, keep your home furnished and the latest thing you demand available. Those “idiot drivers” are the backbone of the economy and contribute a helluva lot more than you do. Those “idiot drivers” were the key workers going out every day and risking catching covid so you could stay at home and not starve. Those “idiot drivers” deserve some fucking respect for the work that they do. by keltik7 (Tue 31st Jan 2023 9:08pm)
  • Rest assured, they’re not killing people for fun. by keltik7 (Tue 31st Jan 2023 10:26pm)
  • There are vastly more car users than bike users, so of course that’s true. Car users are also very poor road users, that doesn’t detract from my statement. If you don’t train someone in how to do something, they’re not going to do it well, that shouldn’t be a controversial statement. A cyclist can still cause harm to other road users, especially pedestrians. I remember one incident I very narrowly avoided, stepping out of a building onto a pavement, a cyclist travelling at serious speed whizzed by me, lightly brushing me. Now if I’d stepped out a second earlier, he’d have smashed into me causing us both serious injury. If that had been a car, I’d have been able to get a reg plate and report it for dangerous driving. But it was a cyclist, so I couldn’t do anything. I’m fairly fit and able, but what if it had been an elderly or disabled person he’d hit? There was zero repercussions for him. Who knows if he’s since injured someone? Cyclists should be responsible road users. That requires management. by keltik7 (Wed 1st Feb 2023 5:11pm)
  • I’m not sticking up for motorists either. I think retesting should be mandatory every few years. The state of car driving is appalling. I’m all for more people cycling, but like anything, it needs to be done safely. by keltik7 (Wed 1st Feb 2023 6:34pm)

  • Ok. Here’s me dealing with the concerns. The reality is you’re being lied to about these people. It’s called ‘scapegoating’. It’s a distraction technique. There are people out there who are making your life harder and my life harder too. They’re ruining our communities and taking away our services. These people however are not asylum seekers. They’re the people in power who have a lot of money and a lot of influence and they control 99% of the media you consume and they bombard you with lies. Lies that tell you the reason your life is shit is because some poor bastard who left their entire life behind in a ravaged country and is scraping by on a fiver a day living in a hotel in a country that’s totally alien to them with people camped outside telling them they’d cheerfully murder them. They get you so riled up by these scapegoats that you completely miss the way those in power fuck you over again and again and again and again and again. You’re right to be angry. I’m fucking angry. But I’m angry at those responsible. Not those poor bastards that just need a hand. by keltik7 (Thu 2nd Feb 2023 10:15pm)

  • I totally understand people being unsure and having questions, all services are cut to the bone right now, which is another fight we all should be backing, but it’s circumstances like this that the right wing try to capitalise on and stoke up fear and resentment. Look at 1930s Germany, totally crippled by reparations, people were hurting and they were angry. Then a charismatic leader comes along and channels that anger into something productive, they can do something about it! And the rest is history. We have to be really careful not to let that happen again. Literally the whole meaning of “lest we forget”. by keltik7 (Sat 4th Feb 2023 2:25pm)
