  • There are two large companies which provide most of the bus transport. First covers a larger area I believe and run more buses in and around Glasgow. McGills do ones over in the Paisley and Renfrew area, but not exclusive to those areas as their routes also go into glasgow city centre. Both do all-day unlimited travel tickets but you can't use one on the other network. There is a type of ticket you can get though called a zone card which covers all trains, buses, and subway. However I think the minimum you can get it for is a week and you need to get photo id made up. by marlonoranges (Mon 6th Jun 2022 11:07pm)
  • For me, it's strangely more polarised than Edinburgh. If it's cold in E it'll be colder in G. If hot in E it'll be hotter in G. by marlonoranges (Sun 12th Jun 2022 5:57pm)
  • Is there no late night bus going down to Dumbarton? Used to be but that was a long long time ago so may have changed. Otherwise could you get s bus to eg, clydebank, then a taxi or uber from there to lessen the cost? by marlonoranges (Mon 13th Jun 2022 6:44pm)
  • I used to live in a block of six flats. This was before they brought in the recycling different bins stuff. Even with a single bin per flat it was a complete nightmare. Nobody but me put the bins out each week. If I decided I'd had enough they would literally let weeks of rubbish accumulate. I would never live in flats again because of that. • Now....Good question. I went to type it as two words and autocorrect immediately completed it after I typed the hotch part so I accepted it. Perhaps I have been lead down a dark path of incorrect phraseology? by marlonoranges (Sun 26th Jun 2022 10:24pm)

  • I wouldn't go THAT far but there was a long period where drunks and junkies were hanging around the rennie mackintosh hotel entrance, staggering out into the road and bothering passerbys in full view of a permanently parked police van... which did absolutely nothing. by marlonoranges (Fri 8th Jul 2022 11:37pm)

  • Born and raised in areas around Glasgow. I wish I could repeat the positivity of the above posters but in my opinion the vast majority of Glasgow is terrible and unsafe. Dalmuir, clydebank, yoker, drumchapel, Scotstoun, Maryhill, city centre, easterhouse, castlemilk, shettleston etc all areas that you take your life in your hands going near. by marlonoranges (Sat 16th Jul 2022 9:17pm)
  • Oh I wouldn't deny that every area of the uk has bad areas but the OP questioned glasgow specifically. By the time I was 16 I'd been attacked by a group that broke a bottle over my head, friends were slashed by thugs with razor blades, and a girl in school was stabbed to death at 15 years old. I've seen full scale riots in Glasgow nightclubs and a guy stabbed in the eyeball on a night bus. One night out ended by a random thug punching out cold a girl in my party of friends. Every newspaper has stories every day about incidents. No point in denying the truth. by marlonoranges (Sat 16th Jul 2022 10:27pm)

  • Went to see the film Talk Radio in, I think, the Odeon years back. There's a particularly tense scene and the packed sudience is sitting in silence. Suddenly some guy let's out the biggest crudest full volume burp you've ever heard. The entire place erupted in laughter by marlonoranges (Wed 20th Jul 2022 8:33pm)
  • Hi. My partner and I were married in a humanist ceremony in Glasgow last year, on the tail end of covid restrictions. We met with the lady beforehand but only so she could get a feel for us for her to write the ceremony script and help with our individual vows. That could all have been fone via zoom TBH. No documentation was completed during those meetings and everything was done on the day. by marlonoranges (Sun 24th Jul 2022 11:48am)
  • So whenever you feel shite at your job, just remember you didn't waste $90m. Not just getting something wrong, but getting it so wrong that the people who hired you say "I know we spent the money but jeez let's just call it quits and walk away from this shite" That's a whole other level of shiteness that us mere mortals can only aspire to. by marlonoranges (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 12:14am)
  • I believe the McGills buses run from Buchanan bus station. If a number 26 runs from there it'll take you into Paisley, but a long journey. Alternatively the x23 bus is an express service that you can get to Braehead shopping centre then change for a 26 to Paisley. by marlonoranges (Tue 20th Sep 2022 12:03am)

  • Hmmm. Hoping for the best for you... why do the issuing office write down the details if they don't do anything with them? I'm hoping that what they do in practice is more useful than their policy! by marlonoranges (Wed 5th Oct 2022 11:47pm)

  • There's a polarisation effect taking place. The more there were differentials in the past, the more extreme they are now. I'm REALLY generalising here but if you have wealthier parents they are more likely to be educated and/or work in higher paid or professional jobs. Those parents will encourage their children, maybe pay for private schools or tuition, help children onto the housing ladder etc. Basically put their children in a place where they themselves are more likely to be wealthier. In poorer areas it'll be a lot harder to get a good start as people cannot afford to give their children the same advantages. Doesn't mean that the children are fucked, it just means they'll have a harder journey. Now apply that across generations, with the differences growing. Add in the cost of university education, fewer higher paid jobs etc and you've got a widening gap. That's how it seems to me. There's always been a divergence but it was smaller in the past. by marlonoranges (Wed 16th Nov 2022 11:23pm)

  • I come from an area outside Glasgow called Clydebank. Famous for getting the crap bombed out of it during the blitz. Although it's not a great area, the centre is decent enough and you'll get a small flat there for 70-80k. Great transport links to the centre of Glasgow. Worth a look. I sold a flat to a student nurse there 5 years ago for less than 70k by marlonoranges (Sun 26th Mar 2023 5:55pm)
  • Above poster has given a good answer. Internet doesn't vary in cost with usage, and lighting costs very little. Your biggest area of concern would be heating. Some people I know who can wfh decide not to because they can go into a heated office for free (other than travel costs) rather than pay for heating their own home. TBH though, it seems like your relationship with your flatmate is breaking down and it's worth strongly considering moving on as it doesn't seem saveable from what you've said. by marlonoranges (Mon 27th Mar 2023 11:48pm)

  • The card covers First and McGills buses, trains, and the underground and renfrew ferry depending on the zones. You have a picture card with a serial number and you buy a train ticket thats specially just for the zone card and they write the serial number on it so that the two tie up. In theory that stops fraud but would depend on a driver or inspector really closely looking at it. When I was travelling a lot around Glasgow I loved it. Just felt like I had all sorts of options for getting about. by marlonoranges (Wed 26th Apr 2023 6:47pm)

  • Hi. In Glasgow but work as a business analyst for a bank based in Edinburgh. Salary, taking into account bonus, is about £65k. I have years of experience and I'm senior, but that's about average. I'd expect IT guys to be on least as much so the figure for yourself does seem low. by marlonoranges (Sat 13th May 2023 11:58pm)
  • Decades in financial services in general, but about 15 years specifically as a business analyst. Salaries go according to grades so someone working for the same company anywhere in the UK outside London will probably be at the same salary level. I'd imagine, comparing company to company, they may be slightly higher in Edinburgh because of the larger demand. by marlonoranges (Sun 14th May 2023 11:32am)

  • Yep it is. It ramped up during covid. I was in Union Street and drunks and prostitutes were everywhere, sometimes in full view of police who did nothing. I even saw a drunk guy run up to a police van with officers in it, banged on the side of the van hard and repeatedly, and they did nothing. by marlonoranges (Sun 18th Jun 2023 9:27pm)

  • It's at management's discretion. I guess that it depends on the likelihood of trouble. Bars that are busier early on when the crowd is more sober probably don't have too many problems, but for clubs the clientele may already have had drinks before even going in. I used to go to the Savoy. Great nights but there were multiple fights every Saturday. by marlonoranges (Sat 23rd Sep 2023 7:56pm)
  • I used to go out myself a lot. Loved it. Soon after I stopped as I found a missus, this would be about 2015, a friend who worked as a bouncer told me that clubs were changing their policies to stop single males from going in. Rationale was that too many were going in and acting weird around women, approaching women on the dancefloor etc. So it's been a policy for a while by marlonoranges (Mon 25th Sep 2023 10:27am)

  • I remember one guy, middle aged, burly, standing in the middle of the main route through the place. Shirt completely open, screaming at the top of his voice gibberish, banging on his chest like King Kong. Everyone just walking round him like "wtf" A mate knew who he was and emailed him the next day "wtf wad going on with you"? • Hi. Just a suggestion - maybe cross-post this one r/work as well? by marlonoranges (Sat 2nd Dec 2023 9:07pm)
  • Glasgow, and Scotland as a whole, can be very cold and very wet. A good course of action would be a waterproof jacket that could be worn over a few layers. Eg t shirt + jumper + jacket. I personally have a North Face puffer for days when it's cold but dry, and a waterproof padded jacket for days when it's likely to pour down. You'll need those options from about October to March. by marlonoranges (Sun 10th Dec 2023 1:20am)
  • No not really. The NF ones are "shower proof" so are ony really for very light rain. Anything more and you risk the down filling being saturated. The one I wear in the rain (a Hillfigger fashion jacket) is more sturdy but less warm. I'd love a jacket that ticks both boxes but haven't found one yet. by marlonoranges (Sun 10th Dec 2023 2:18am)

  • You could look into whether the First 77 does anything for you. I think that it cones down from Glasgow airport, through Braehead, the tunnel and into Partick. Youd then change for another First bus to Yoker. Longish journey but might be the cheapest option by marlonoranges (Tue 12th Dec 2023 5:54pm)
