  • You'll be fine. There will be 15+ people there tomorrow, we'll be upstairs wearing geeky tshirts, and we'll be looking out for people looking lost. You can talk to some of the people who'll be there tomorrow (and who have been at the last couple of meetups) here: [https://irc.armchairscientist.co.uk/guest/](https://irc.armchairscientist.co.uk/guest/) by sevenofk9 (Thu 24th Jan 2019 4:30pm)

  • Cool - it'd just be on my lunch break though, would need to get back to the office - if that's okay with you I could meet you on Thursday at 12:30 for an hour or so? Anybody else work/live nearby? by sevenofk9 (Tue 7th May 2019 9:56am)
  • Haven't heard back from OP, but I'm committed now. I'll head to Botanics at 12:30 on Thursday and stand awkwardly at the doors for a bit reading on my phone - let's see if we can find each other :) by sevenofk9 (Tue 7th May 2019 5:26pm)

There'll be a short talk (they generally discourage slides/presentations - it's just an off-the-cuff talk) and then the floor is opened for questions/discussion. Previous talks have been on all sorts of subjects from bird flu to nanotech. by sevenofk9 (Sat 18th May 2019 9:38pm)

I'd be happy to go see "americana, sometimes with 6 or 8 or 10 people—a horn section, banjo, lap steel, strings and more—and sometimes as one man with an acoustic guitar and his voice" if they're still available! I'm just on my own though, so maybe a couple would appreciate them more! Thanks! by sevenofk9 (Wed 25th Sep 2019 7:51pm)

Nothing too untoward though - the owners are music producers who schedule events at the fictional venue way in advance, gauge the numbers, then book an actual venue nearer the time (that suits the expected audience size). by sevenofk9 (Wed 9th Oct 2019 3:22pm)

  • I've often thought they should have a couple of easily identifiable buses that just do simple loops around the town. Put at least four on each way so you'll only ever have to wait 15 minutes. Charge people £5/month for unlimited travel. Make the buses electric to keep emissions down and run the lot as a non-profit. Is this idea doomed to failure? by sevenofk9 (Thu 24th Oct 2019 2:41pm)
  • Could we make them 24 hours and could we require a membership? If you get thrown off one for being a fud, you can't get on any others (until you go through some re-approval process). It might make getting home at 4am less of a safari. by sevenofk9 (Thu 24th Oct 2019 3:07pm)
  • How do you remove people without memberships? A bus-wide blacklist? That's just hurting poor people with extra steps! :P by sevenofk9 (Thu 24th Oct 2019 4:44pm)
  • We don't deal with it. That's my point. Someone can be thrown off a bus for being violent and get on the next one in 5 minutes, or 5 days. by sevenofk9 (Thu 24th Oct 2019 6:09pm)

  • I use the lounge of the Avalon bar off Kent Road for a few regular meetups ([https://opensource.glasgow.social](https://opensource.glasgow.social)) It's not a projector (they have a TV screen) but good enough for what I need. It's free to hire the room. Tuesdays are mine! :P It's not the best pub, but it's cheap and cheerful (and the lounge has its own bar and entrance if needed and is pretty isolated from the main bar). by sevenofk9 (Wed 20th Nov 2019 12:55pm)
  • Yup. It's annoying, as I keep posting events to the subreddit (that get 20-30 upvotes) before the mods delete it and say "use the steamie". Nobody reads it. by sevenofk9 (Fri 29th Nov 2019 11:17am)
  • Not being able to post events to r/glasgow \- things like Pint of Science was on during the week as well as a few geeky events. When I've been posting recently the mods just delete them with no explanation. I've got so annoyed I put together a live list of all the things they're deleting just to see what else I might be missing :P by sevenofk9 (Fri 29th Nov 2019 12:01pm)
  • Yes, I understand you'd prefer that. I don't. Not sure when you decided this. Am I still allowed to post our r/glasgow meetup events or will they be summarily deleted too? by sevenofk9 (Sat 30th Nov 2019 4:24pm)
  • I don't think my own events are special. Most of ones I post aren't my own events. So - just so I have this right - any post we make on /r/glasgow about local events will be deleted unless we get first get it added to thelist.co.uk? How we do go about getting this changed? by sevenofk9 (Sun 1st Dec 2019 11:33pm)
  • Ha, I'm responding to my summons! I'm afraid I can't be a lot of help though. I'm not sure of any computer networking only groups in Glasgow - there are a bunch of individual events held by groups like [The AWS Meetup](https://www.meetup.com/Amazon-Web-Services-User-Group-Glasgow/), [DevOps Glasgow](https://www.meetup.com/DevOpsGlasgow/) and [Open Source Glasgow](https://www.meetup.com/Open-Source-Glasgow/) that might be relevant but you'd have to look at their upcoming events and decide which ones interest you. I've put together a list of the all tech groups I know of in Glasgow here: [https://glasgow.openguide.co.uk/tech](https://glasgow.openguide.co.uk/tech) That said I'm generally interested in Glasgow based mesh networking and self-hosted systems (and providing IRC and related network services to community groups in Glasgow - join us in IRC on [irc.glasgow.social](https://irc.glasgow.social) if that sort of thing interests you). [LordAnubis12](https://www.reddit.com/user/LordAnubis12/) mentioned RookieOven in this thread - that's not exactly what you asked for (it's networking as in meeting people in the computer industry, not people interested in computer networking specifically) but coincidentally they have a meetup tonight (that I'll be at) where someone might have a better suggestion. Anyway, hope you find something (and let me know if you find anything I can add to my list). Neil. by sevenofk9 (Mon 2nd Dec 2019 2:11pm)

  • They delete too much in my opinion. It should just be spam removal - allow the rest. And when I say spam - I mean actual spam, not arbitarily deleting a post about something in Glasgow. by sevenofk9 (Sun 9th Aug 2020 8:26pm)
  • I guess my point is that the downvote system is there - if it's shite content it'll drop off the list - and the die hards like me can view everything or sort by new etc and get to feel 'the pulse' of what's going on. by sevenofk9 (Sun 9th Aug 2020 9:55pm)

  • I thought it pretty clearly shows the difference. For example 8 removed on Friday, 1 was deleted. 9 total. by sevenofk9 (Mon 10th Aug 2020 1:39pm)
  • I'm glad to hear that. I used to post regularly about what was on in Glasgow (some things I ran, like free/open programming workshops) and other unrelated things like Skeptics in the pub events etc but they kept being deleted so I just gave up. I'd like to be able to share this type of content - I can't see any downside to it. by sevenofk9 (Mon 10th Aug 2020 1:35pm)

  • No worries, just wanted to make sure it was accurate. I had a quick look - these two (which are both deleted) might be causing the confusion: [https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/i624df/mimosa\_loving\_ladies\_of\_dennistoun/](https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/i624df/mimosa_loving_ladies_of_dennistoun/) (marked as removed) [https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/i5e2nc/what\_pubs\_are\_open\_past\_midnight\_in\_glasgow\_atm/](https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/i5e2nc/what_pubs_are_open_past_midnight_in_glasgow_atm/) (marked as deleted) I checked the logs - the Mimosa post was removed (and then deleted), the pubs open past midnight one was just deleted. I could track the order of events more clearly but I think it shows what I needed to see (which posts were removed vs those which aren't). You can compare the JSON reddit serves for both posts here (notice the 'selftext' field): [https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/i624df/mimosa\_loving\_ladies\_of\_dennistoun/.json](https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/i624df/mimosa_loving_ladies_of_dennistoun/.json) [https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/i5e2nc/what\_pubs\_are\_open\_past\_midnight\_in\_glasgow\_atm/.json](https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/i5e2nc/what_pubs_are_open_past_midnight_in_glasgow_atm/.json) by sevenofk9 (Mon 10th Aug 2020 1:56pm)

  • Yep, I agree. It's been especially bad the last couple of months, some days fine, some days undrinkable (even in tea). I'd actually given up years ago and just use bottled water now (I buy the big 5L jugs for quid). I wasn't so fussy - I made my tea with it, but in the past month or two I've started using it for tea too. Quite annoying. My girlfriend on the other hand says "It's fine". I'm in Charing Cross just in case that matters. by sevenofk9 (Thu 20th Aug 2020 4:26pm)

It was pretty bad during the first lockdown - you're right, the town felt a bit like a zombie wasteland. • I don't have fast fibre where I am, so 5G was my main alternative for fast broadband (faster than the standard 70Mb ADSL line). I'm using 5G broadband from Vodafone - it's £50/month \[for unlimited\] (which is what I was paying in my last flat for Virgin, which isn't available here). It's pretty decent. Pings are slightly higher (30-40ms, so fine, but not as fast as my old Virgin). Speeds are around 250-300Mbit/s down (about what I was getting on Virgin's lower end package) and 50Mbit/s up (higher than what I was getting with Virgin) \[[https://www.speedtest.net/result/10471234543](https://www.speedtest.net/result/10471234543)\] by sevenofk9 (Mon 23rd Nov 2020 10:38pm)

  • Good question. It's open source and decentralised (federated), so, for example, you can run your own server and your users can still follow my server (and vice versa, users on my server can post/comment/subscribe to your forums). Takes back a bit of control. It's also intergrated with the larger fediverse (like Mastodon etc - see [https://glasgow.social](https://glasgow.social)) so you can follow and comment from there too. It's my only alternative to get better than 60-70Mb ADSL as my flat doesn't have Virgin/fast fibre. Ping is slightly higher, but gaming is still fine, and as you can see speeds are good (300Mb/down, 40+ Mb up - higher than most alternatives). The only downside for me is that I'm not able to host servers at home as Vodafone use CGNAT (shared IPv4 addresses), but other than that everything works well (20+ devices plugged in on the wifi). by sevenofk9 (Fri 4th Dec 2020 6:53pm)

  • Yeah, it's a tool of mine. It's basically an archive of all the posts/comments made to r/glasgow so I can track which ones are deleted by the mods, this is the main page of it: [https://projects.glasgow.social/rglasgow/posts](https://projects.glasgow.social/rglasgow/posts) Another side project was the 'interest guesser' (it looks for unique words in your comments/posts) - which we used to populate a big sheet of paper at the physical meetups - a conversation starter, which usually turned out pretty interesting :) The main domain [https://glasgow.social](https://glasgow.social) is an alternative open source social media (it works like Twitter). It's getting pretty popular. We also have the Wiki [https://wiki.glasgow.social](https://wiki.glasgow.social) There is a Lemmy forum too (which is like an open source decentralised Reddit) at [https://lemmy.glasgow.social](https://lemmy.glasgow.social) Our chat rooms are pretty active (100+ members) on [https://matrix.glasgow.social](https://matrix.glasgow.social) Lot's going on if you know where to look :) by sevenofk9 (Wed 10th Feb 2021 12:32pm)

It's close to the west end and close to town. It's quiet, reasonably high on the SMID indexes etc while still being relatively affordable. • I'm hosting one of my monthly "How to set up a webserver from scratch" tutorials in the pub (Bon Accord) from 6pm tonight if that sounds up your street: [https://opensource.glasgow.social](https://opensource.glasgow.social) Meetup link: [https://www.meetup.com/Open-Source-Glasgow/events/280235012/](https://www.meetup.com/Open-Source-Glasgow/events/280235012/) by sevenofk9 (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 1:24pm)
  • Peter Krykant mentioned in the article (not to be confused with Peter McDade who is filming/talking) runs "Glasgow Overdose Prevention Service" from a van, paid out of his own pocket. The Guardian did a video piece on him recently: https://peertube.glasgow.social/videos/watch/2d424c86-8dae-4813-bbe4-1c4225312d2d by sevenofk9 (Mon 27th Sep 2021 11:43pm)
  • I agree. The up/down vote system is there to make popular stuff rise and unpopular stuff fall, but with posts being removed so often we don't get to see it in action. I've been trying to set up an alternative to r/glasgow at [https://lemmy.glasgow.social](https://lemmy.glasgow.social) with lots of seperate sections for stuff to exist in - but it's a chicken and egg problem - it's not so active, so difficult to get people to try it out :) by sevenofk9 (Tue 28th Sep 2021 12:35pm)
  • There's a lot more than that :) https://projects.glasgow.social/ by sevenofk9 (Tue 28th Sep 2021 1:25pm)
  • Bon Accord on North Street, just next to Mitchell Library. I'll be there regardless, come say hello! by sevenofk9 (Tue 28th Sep 2021 2:09pm)
  • That's all automated. It's populated solely by RSS feeds of Glasgow blogs at the moment. There are zero users, give or take. I'm in two minds whether to disable that or not - I thought it would be useful. The point is you can create your own subreddit there for your group/club etc and then chose to follow other communities either locally on [lemmy.glasgow.social](https://lemmy.glasgow.social) or on any other server. I think the [https://lemmy.glasgow.social/c/politics](https://lemmy.glasgow.social/c/politics) community is a good example. It's populated with posts from some relevant Glasgow political blogs, but it's also intended to be a space for discussions. If it got popular those blogs would even out and become a smaller fraction of the posts. Like I said, it's the chicken and egg problem, I'm not sure leaving it just completely blank would be better. by sevenofk9 (Tue 28th Sep 2021 2:11pm)
  • I did consider that, but I might have to post them under the same username (Reddit Glasgow or something) as creating accounts individually (as I do now for RSS feeds) has a bit of overhead. Posting them as one user takes a way a bit of control (you can't choose to follow/block individuals) but it might be good as a start, for seeding. I'll have a think! by sevenofk9 (Tue 28th Sep 2021 2:35pm)
  • Yeah, that's what I'm doing with the RSS feeds at the moment, see [https://lemmy.glasgow.social/u/glasgowartclub](https://lemmy.glasgow.social/u/glasgowartclub) for an example. Lemmy is completely open, but it'll probably be a lot of work to modify the login system (and have all the decentralised federation still work). I could build something that sent login details for lemmy as a DM to their reddit account on request.. not sure if that is a bit of a barrier to entry or not. Plus, need to find the time, it's not on the first page of my todo list :P Food for thought though. by sevenofk9 (Tue 28th Sep 2021 2:48pm)
  • As far as I know, in Glasgow (city area), you aren't allowed a firepit unless you use smokeless fuel (expensive). You ARE allowed to dispose of garden waste though (i.e. if you cut down a tree or something) - of course it's hard to prove what is garden waste and what isn't - which means it's pretty fair game to do what you want - just try to keep the smoke levels down and don't bother anyone etc. by sevenofk9 (Tue 28th Sep 2021 2:52pm)
  • Ha, I'm more busy than usual at the moment, but leave it with me :P by sevenofk9 (Tue 28th Sep 2021 2:55pm)

  • In fact, I'll not downvote it. That takes effort. It's not interesting enough to upvote and not irrelevant enough to downvote. Which is competely fine. by sevenofk9 (Fri 1st Oct 2021 10:06am)
  • It's an article from a Glasgow paper, about journalists from Glasgow working at a Glasgow paper winning an award presented at a Glasgow venue. I'd say it's relevant to Glasgow. I don't give a shit about the link or the awards and I'll downvote it, but it shouldn't be deleted because it's not Glasgow enough. That's my two cents. by sevenofk9 (Fri 1st Oct 2021 10:05am)

  • Ha, yeah, I thought that too. I guess I'll just be plucking it off (though someone told me you can't donate it to a charity shop in the future if it doesn't have a label?). No, not double sided. by sevenofk9 (Fri 8th Oct 2021 2:54pm)

  • I'd also be keen to know this. I haven't seen that wee Barras stall in years. Everywhere these days does healthier 'part-baked' doughnuts and I hate them. Tantrum Doughnuts do a glazed ring that is decent, but not as good as an old fashioned fried sugar ring doughnut. by sevenofk9 (Wed 13th Oct 2021 2:01pm)

  • I have a unit about the same size, I'm currently paying £1.40/kwh (about £1400/month). I signed a contract back in October that would bring me down to 95p/kwh (still around £900/month - I use around 1,000kwh/month) but they keep generating monthly bills for the previous rate - it's BES Utilities - they're a fucking shambles. According to this [https://www.gov.uk/guidance/energy-bill-relief-scheme-help-for-businesses-and-other-non-domestic-customers#other-support-for-businessnon-domestic-customers](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/energy-bill-relief-scheme-help-for-businesses-and-other-non-domestic-customers#other-support-for-businessnon-domestic-customers) there should be some help on reducing costs - but that page is says it'll apply automatically to your bill - haven't seen it yet. I think I'll try phoning around for another supplier tomorrow - simply can't get through to BES at the moment. by sevenofk9 (Mon 9th Jan 2023 9:26pm)
  • Yeah, just electric, tell me about it. Really need to figure something out or it's going to be untenable (I'm only in my first 6 months). Yeah, paying something like 33-36p/kwh at home too. You could look into gas bottle heaters, I'm using them at the moment, £70/15kg of gas - still not quite sure how long that'll last - I'm just blasting the heaters for an hour to get the place warm in the morning - still collecting usage info so I can see how much that's going to cost me per month. Next issue: getting hold of a bottle - that was tricky, ended up just buying two second hand (they replace them for you at some petrol stations - but you need that first one to take in). by sevenofk9 (Mon 9th Jan 2023 9:43pm)

  • A girl sat next to me in Cathouse years ago (when I was 20 years younger) and I said to her "What the hell happened to your arms? It looks like you've came through a rose bush on your way here". Then she explained to me they were scars from self harming. I had literally no idea what that even was. in the middle of her explanation I was like "Wtf? A razor blade?". I'd never seen anything like that before. Now I know all about it and thinking back makes me cringe. I guess the point is, maybe it wasn't malice and just simple bone-headed ignorance? Granted, she sounds older and should've known better. Though I wonder what would have happened if you'd told her (not that you owe her an explanation or anything) - maybe she'd be mortified and would think differently about opening her mouth in the future {like I do now}. by sevenofk9 (Mon 14th Aug 2023 12:15pm)

  • The answer is no I'm afraid. You'd need a much bigger unit (or multiple units) to make a dent (and generally it'll go straight back to whatever your usual level is within 24 hours of them being turned off). Best to use it for enclosed areas that are particuarly damp, or when drying clothes. That said, I run two 25L units 24/7 in my ground floor/basement level office which costs about £200/month. It helps, but not as much as £200/month should help. by sevenofk9 (Wed 23rd Aug 2023 10:37am)
