  • Spent an evening raving in an old warehouse in Cowcaddens a while back for this, they staged a club night with some Subby DJ’s and shot sections of the film around it. Was a lot of fun! by Crayonized (Wed 9th Jan 2019 6:24pm)
  • Sleazy's is a bar that'll let you in on your ones and on the weekends there'll usually be a group that'll drunkenly adopt you for a night! Went through a phase of doing this there and never had any issues after a few drinks. by Crayonized (Sat 12th Jan 2019 2:02pm)
  • Merchant City is definitely the way to go with regard to walk-ability. Get down to Paesano for a hangover pizza, it's in the area and some of the best pizza you can get in the UK IMO. by Crayonized (Sat 12th Jan 2019 2:00pm)
  • Hang about at Open Mic nights and get your face out there as well as at other bands gigs. Sleazy's do a good open mic every other Monday as well as tons of other venues around town (should be able to find them with a google). by Crayonized (Sat 12th Jan 2019 8:49pm)
  • Try Cathcart or Mount Florida, reckon they’d fit most of your criteria. by Crayonized (Tue 15th Jan 2019 12:22pm)
  • About 6 weeks sober here. The first couple of weekends were pretty shite (felt like I was missing out, awkward explaining it to folk etc) but since the start of the year I've honestly felt better than I've ever felt in my adult life. Saving a ton of cash, realising how pointless a lot of social drinking is and massively improved mental health have all been motivation to carry on! I didn't actually realise the extent to which drugs/alcohol were wrecking havoc with my emotions until I experienced a good chunk of time off of them. So yeah, be prepared for a rough couple of weeks but it's 100% worth it in the long run. by Crayonized (Tue 22nd Jan 2019 9:03pm)
  • Head out to Sub Club, The Berkeley Suite or La Cheetah and ask around afterwards for Incognito or Lunacy afters, someone should be able to sort you out. by Crayonized (Wed 23rd Jan 2019 1:29am)
  • Raindogs in the city centre/west end, they cut curlier hair well! by Crayonized (Fri 15th Feb 2019 9:40pm)
  • What’s the point in blaming individual people looking to save a bit of cash by moving to a traditionally ‘less desirable’ area as opposed to the folk increasing local business rates, knocking up cheap/badly built student accommodation and a lack of government support for local groups that promote integration? by Crayonized (Thu 28th Feb 2019 10:16am)
  • The closest we have to a Berlin style electronic scene here is our afters scene. Go to nights at La Cheetah, Sub Club, Room 2 (brand new club with a Panorama Bar style sound system) and ask around outside for an afters. Lunacy is the best one I’ve been to, someone should be able to point you in the right direction! For non electronic alternative definitely head to Nice N Sleazy, one of the best bars out there with a great basement venue that’s packed on weekends. by Crayonized (Thu 28th Feb 2019 11:56am)
  • Thanks for the link about the Merchant City property strategy, interesting read! by Crayonized (Tue 5th Mar 2019 9:18am)
  • Have a look over at the [Citizens Theatre](https://www.citz.co.uk/), they should be able to point you in the right direction with regard to community projects. by Crayonized (Thu 4th Apr 2019 6:19pm)
  • Still a few hours behind most of Europe but a step in the right direction! by Crayonized (Wed 17th Apr 2019 3:38pm)
  • They’re playing St. Luke’s in June if you’re about, will be class 👌 by Crayonized (Wed 17th Apr 2019 5:40pm)
  • Can add us all to a WhatsApp if that works? by Crayonized (Sat 27th Apr 2019 1:28pm)
  • Billy Woods at Supermax is a good shout (although more disco than house music) by Crayonized (Sun 5th May 2019 12:38pm)
  • Moved here from the South of England for context. Can live far more comfortably here than I could where I was before. There's a constant supply of interesting events in the arts/music/culture sectors that means I can find something good to do whenever I'm free. Folk talk to each other and there's a general sense of solidarity among Glaswegians as opposed to the conflict and "me before everyone else" mentality affecting a lot of cities. Only real downsides are the sectarianism and the weather, but Vitamin D supplements and earplugs on Orange Walk mornings have kept those issues at bay! by Crayonized (Thu 9th May 2019 3:58pm)
  • Having moved here from the South of England and settled for about 5 years, the attitude of a lot of born and raised Glaswegians seems to reflect a bit of a negative echo chamber. You can work a relatively normal job here and afford to live in an alright part of town, go out on your days off, eat out and have a social life. Having all of this isn’t possible for someone in London unless they’ve got tons of money behind them to get them started. Otherwise you’re on the arse end of the overground living in a shitty flat with 8 other people and your room is a broom cupboard. Want to escape your flat and see your mates who live on the other side of town is a trek that would be like going from Glasgow to Edinburgh. I’ve known a couple of folk who’ve moved down to London with notions of Glasgow being a backward midden of a place and have returned proven wrong. Sure, the council are crap and public transport is lacking in comparison to other places but things are definitely on the up! by Crayonized (Wed 5th Jun 2019 8:58am)
  • Good points here. To be honest I’d go out on a limb and say for a few specific areas of leisure Glasgow trumps London. London’s got fantastic nightlife but getting tickets to the top club nights with guest DJ’s is prohibitively expensive and far more competitive than it is here. I got to see Larry Heard smash out an incredible set with an amazing vocalist and keyboard player in probably the most intimate setting the show’s ever been done in (Subby) without having to set my alarm for tickets. Last night I saw one of my favourite non local bands in Tuts for a tenner after only finding out about the gig the day before. On top of this there’s amazing open spaces like Rouken Glen, Pollok Park, Queen’s Park, Linn Park etc. Free to enter, never overly crowded with tourists or locals (only perhaps on a hot day in QP) and world class open areas of natural beauty to enjoy without even leaving town. If you make the effort to explore what the city has to offer you’ll never be sitting at home with nothing to do, even if you’re a bit skint as there’s enough free amenities to take advantage of as well. Fuck me, People Make Glasgow give me a shout and I’ll sell your city better than you do! by Crayonized (Wed 5th Jun 2019 12:49pm)
  • If you're looking for affordable CBT get yourself registered down at the [Centre of Therapy](https://www.centreoftherapy.org/), the staff are in training but excellent and sessions start from a tenner each. by Crayonized (Wed 5th Jun 2019 4:00pm)
  • Stereo, Nice N Sleazy (head downstairs for a dance), Mono - All good bars that fit your criteria. by Crayonized (Sat 8th Jun 2019 12:43pm)
  • Get down to the [Jazz Festival](http://www.jazzfest.co.uk/) in a couple of weeks! by Crayonized (Sun 9th Jun 2019 3:18pm)
  • Nice n Sleazy or The Laurieston by Crayonized (Wed 3rd Jul 2019 9:21am)
  • Good luck with your new life here my friend! by Crayonized (Thu 1st Aug 2019 11:49pm)
  • Lots of good restaurants in the Dumbarton Rd area- Bibi's Cantina does decent Mexican food by UK standards & St Louis is a nice spot at the top of the street leaving Partick. Good subway access for getting into town quick and easy access to GU. The Lismore is a great pub too! by Crayonized (Tue 20th Aug 2019 6:00pm)
  • If you fancy hearing some good local music head to [this gig](https://www.facebook.com/events/2086309881477920/). Head to Nice n Sleazy for a drink in the evening if you get time too! by Crayonized (Fri 13th Sep 2019 10:36am)
  • Check out our [guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/5yt5cg/rglasgows_guide_to_glasgow/) to town if you haven't already, some good places to go that you might miss as a tourist! by Crayonized (Thu 19th Sep 2019 1:19pm)
  • Hang about at Nice n Sleazy’s open mic night, jam nights at The Blue Arrow, [and head to this event next Saturday.](https://www.facebook.com/events/1152278454974818/?ti=icl) Get chatting to folk at these events and you’ll soon meet like minded folk! by Crayonized (Mon 23rd Sep 2019 10:59am)
  • Some good nights coming over Christmas/New Year [Missing Persons Club](https://www.facebook.com/events/420822815473057/) [Shaka at Sleazys](https://www.facebook.com/events/2478941295687622/) (More disco then techno but good fun!) [Optimo at Room 2](https://www.facebook.com/events/522365045278933/) [Skream at BAaD](https://www.facebook.com/events/1100451716819509/) Afters wise don't ask around on here, police have been lurking and shutting down anything they can find. Ask about outside these clubs- best case scenario you're paying a tenner to listen to thumping techno in a derelict building for a few hours, worst case scenario you end up at someone's flat sitting in a circle watching a guy with donut icing ket rings around each nostril tell you about his TV pilot that is about to break on Vimeo. by Crayonized (Mon 23rd Dec 2019 12:58pm)
  • Head out to Nice N Sleazy's, good hipstery dive bar to head out to and meet friendly folk in! They have good music downstairs at the weekends too. by Crayonized (Wed 8th Jan 2020 3:29pm)
  • Have a drink upstairs at Nice n Sleazy and see a gig in the basement venue, lots of great touring and local bands in an intimate setting! Cheap drinks too. by Crayonized (Wed 15th Jan 2020 5:23pm)
  • Definitely gonna have a good night regardless of which one you go for- Sub Culture is the more iconic of Glasgow electronic nights. Also it's only a fiver before 12:30! Ask about in the smoking bit for an afters as there's usually one on Saturday nights. by Crayonized (Tue 21st Jan 2020 2:44pm)
  • Did you check out the Glad Rags in Shawlands? Decent selection of stuff in there usually. Otherwise head to the charity shops in Duke Street or Partick, those tend to have good stuff in. by Crayonized (Wed 5th Feb 2020 12:34pm)
  • If you're looking for a good dive bar head to Nice N Sleazy's- great selection of cheap and cheerful cocktails (the Buckaroo is a must-drink local 'delicacy'). Downstairs features some great live music and club nights and the place is full of interesting folk to chat to. Head to The Amsterdam in the Merchant City for something a bit closer to your accommodation, the cocktails are decent there. A good hungover breakfast spot can be found a couple of minutes away at Singl-End. In addition to this, head to [Hutcheston's](https://www.hutchesonsglasgow.com/)\- it's in the Merchant City and whilst a bit expensive it's in a beautiful building, the service is impeccable and the cocktails are great. You'll feel like you're in the 1940's for an evening! Enjoy your stay! by Crayonized (Sat 8th Feb 2020 11:11am)
  • There’s enough going on after hours if you know where to look, but recent media exposé and police crackdowns have made the scene a bit more cautious than it once was. As others have said, go to events at Sub Club, La Cheetah, Berkeley suite etc and ask folk about afters. On a Friday or Saturday night someone will sort you out! by Crayonized (Thu 13th Feb 2020 1:24pm)
  • Head to Nice N Sleazy for a few drinks and good food, maybe head over to [Polo](https://www.facebook.com/thepololounge/) for a busy LGBT club night on the 17th with drag queens and the like if that's your thing. by Crayonized (Wed 26th Feb 2020 5:07pm)
  • Transmission is worth checking out, also there’s usually something on at The Lighthouse in town. by Crayonized (Wed 4th Mar 2020 8:24am)
  • The Laurieston and Nice n Sleazy’s are two good bars to meet folk in, would recommend the latter if you’re heading out for the night as it’s well located for pub crawls. Neighbourhood wise Finnieston would suit you, anywhere just below Kelvingrove would be ideal. You’ll encounter a few tourists around the University campus and park but nothing to the levels you’ll see in Edinburgh! Check out the Hidden Lane, The 78 and the Ben Nevis in that area. Shoot us a PM if you need any more specific recommendations and enjoy your stay! by Crayonized (Wed 4th Mar 2020 8:34am)
  • Gulabi Photo on the Southside often have a few for sale in their shop or on their instagram, usually within your price range by Crayonized (Wed 11th Mar 2020 10:50am)
  • If they’re inviting folk from all over the city to their flat then when their vulnerable relatives are dying and get turned away from hospital due to a lack of beds in two weeks time they have no right to complain. Absolute fucking morons. by Crayonized (Sat 21st Mar 2020 2:17am)
  • I’d recommend Partick, specifically Dumbarton road and the area near the Lismore pub. Lots of good coffee shops/restaurants, relatively safe to walk around at most hours and a substantial southeast Asian student population. You’ve also got the Kelvingrove Art Gallery nearby and train links to Charing Cross via Partick station. You’ve got good subway links to the city centre too. by Crayonized (Tue 31st Mar 2020 6:48pm)
  • Glasgow should have a dedicated exhibition space for the cities relationship with slavery. Liverpool does this really well with their International Slavery Museum down by the docks, by acknowledging the past in a respectful and informative manner. by Crayonized (Wed 3rd Jun 2020 11:24am)
  • Saw it in [this video](https://www.facebook.com/135244206530503/posts/2860742433980653/?vh=e&d=n) by Crayonized (Mon 8th Jun 2020 1:40pm)
  • Cheers pal, hope you’re doing alright over there. Would love to visit Canada one day, where’s the best place to go for someone who enjoys a city like Glasgow? by Crayonized (Mon 8th Jun 2020 7:27pm)
  • For that budget you can stay almost anywhere in town, a nice [one bed in the West End](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-71012850.html) is at the top of your budget. If you want even more for your money the Southside is your best bet, try looking around the Shawlands (mostly West and South of Queen’s Park). The West End is nice with good access to amenities and transport, but expensive for what it is and students can be noisy on some roads. Shawlands is full of great pubs and bars with good access to town too. Crime and drugs are no worse than the worst bits of Edinburgh, deprivation is a bit more in your face here but you’ll not get any bother unless you’re looking for it. The parts of town to avoid are hard to accidentally come across too. But if any of your pals back home ask, Glasgow’s shite and stabby. Keeps our rent down ;) by Crayonized (Fri 12th Jun 2020 1:20am)
  • Yeah, it’s just a sub where any independence poll skewing more than a percentile towards yes soars to the top and any notion of critical thinking gets you branded as a no voting orange scumbag. Coming from an SNP voter it’s embarrassing and shows how fragile the mindset of some of the more enthusiastic supporters of the cause is. by Crayonized (Mon 29th Jun 2020 9:34am)
  • I mean even if the semantics of the accusation aren’t correct- surely posting a photo of a private jet and flashing your cash/connections the day before asking for cash for the club you own a minority stake in comes off as completely insensitive. Not to mention it doesn’t change the fact the guy’s from one of the richest families in Scotland and could afford to front all of the staff’s wages if he chose to. Instead the general public (including a lot of folk currently unemployed in the middle of a pandemic) is being asked to foot the bill. Nothing illegal of course but pretty cunty. by Crayonized (Wed 8th Jul 2020 5:02pm)
  • Usually if you wear the mask a bit closer to the bridge of your nose and tuck the glasses over it you can avoid most of the condensation. If it’s still happening after that try coating the lenses with slightly soapy water! by Crayonized (Tue 14th Jul 2020 9:14am)
  • Head over to Saint Luke’s for a pint/food from the Necropolis via the Merchant City and the Barras. Not too much exciting stuff going on due to the pandemic but you’ll get a feel for the cities architecture and history with a decent pint at the end of it. From the Necropolis wander about to Ingram street and find your way across Trongate to St Andrew’s Square. Then get to Saint Luke’s via the Barrowland Ballroom and the old market there. Have a google for the city mural trail too, a couple of great ones in that part of town. by Crayonized (Wed 26th Aug 2020 10:05am)
  • The antique shop down Ruthven Lane in the west end often has job lots of old action figures. Could be what you’re looking for! by Crayonized (Tue 15th Sep 2020 8:11am)
  • The Centre of Therapy has helped me a fair bit- on the cheaper side as you’ll be seen by someone who’s training but it’s quite thorough as a result. Used to be a tenner for session last time I went. by Crayonized (Tue 15th Sep 2020 8:09am)
  • Bristol is a fun town! Bits of Montpelier remind me of Govanhill/Shawlands (a bit less gentrified). Glasgow's a bit grimy and underdeveloped in some places but it's affordable, full of stuff to do and your quality of life will be high if you're earning an okay wage. Govanhill gets a bad reputation but there's some great food nearby (Kurdish Street Food and Ranjits Kitchen for example). You're getting there in the still a bit risky to leave your bike in your close but not as dangerous as it used to be phase of gentrification- you'll be drinking/eating on Pollokshaws Road/Victoria Road and spending the rare sunny days in Queen's Park. Make an effort to explore the local community and be social and folk will soon accept you- it's a friendly city at its core but if you're a cunt be expected to be called out on it. When the virus is over the nightlife is class- look at the listings for SWG3, Sub Club, Nice n Sleazys, Tramway and the Barrowland Ballroom (one of the best venues in the world) and go see some live music/club nights/weird art exhibitions with free wine. Let me know if you have any other questions! by Crayonized (Thu 17th Sep 2020 10:52pm)
  • Eat at Ranjit’s Kitchen and Kurdish Street Food, two great immigrant owned businesses. Get involved over at the Govanhill Baths- they have a long history of left-wing activism. I’ve heard that Refuweegee are good for that sort of thing too. Arts wise you’ve got Tramway relatively nearby, a decent exhibition space which hosts some great workshops and events (COVID has affected this obviously) Follow Colourways Glasgow on Instagram, they should be your first port of call for all things graffiti related. by Crayonized (Tue 29th Sep 2020 10:23pm)
  • They’re up at £4 now?! Haven’t been there in a while. Gentrification will have them up at £5.50 by next year at this rate by Crayonized (Tue 29th Sep 2020 10:34pm)
  • I’m only speaking from experience- affordable rent in lower quality housing has allowed me to live an amazing quality of life in Glasgow and dirty closes are a small price to pay for this! People are paying 1550 a month for flat share bedrooms in Hackney at the moment, for that amount you could live anywhere in Glasgow. It’s a huge positive and genuinely not meant to patronise or tarnish the town. Glasgow’s affordable but incredible nightlife is something that the city should be far more renowned for, the fact that so many amazing venues are on the brink of closure due to the pandemic is testament to the fact that they’re not getting the support and recognition they deserve. Venues like the Barras are a perfect example of all this. The stereotype I’ve seen from ignorant folk in England is more about Glasgow being a stabby, cultureless death hole that’s irrelevant compared to Edinburgh’s Disney tourism. I’ve shown folk around your city with pride and all of them have admired the beauty of Glaswegian architecture. Maybe that didn’t come across in my post too well. by Crayonized (Mon 5th Oct 2020 4:54pm)
  • Was working in marketing and events, obviously the industry has been devastated so I’m on the search for something new! by Crayonized (Sun 11th Oct 2020 8:58pm)
  • I’ll definitely miss the welcoming Scottish atmosphere of Celtic Connections and the international trad scene that comes to Glasgow once a year but forgot to mention that, apologies! by Crayonized (Fri 20th Nov 2020 12:27pm)
  • 🍀 🍀 🍀 by Crayonized (Wed 17th Feb 2021 11:29am)
  • [Kingston DIY](https://www.instagram.com/kingstondiy/?hl=en) is a good shout on a rainy day. by Crayonized (Mon 5th Apr 2021 10:06pm)
  • I’m saying this as someone who has voted for the SNP in local/national elections and a soft leaning yes supporter of independence. I think we were starting to see the warning signs of this with the worsening litter problem- watching folks self flagellating mental gymnastics around our crumbling infrastructure and well intentioned community cleanups was interesting. The reality is- our council was broke before COVID and now has been pushed to the point where they can’t afford to provide basic sanitation services. But people seem to steer blame away from the government and attack each other for the state of things. If the city was well managed, bins were collected regularly and waste management was funded appropriately the city wouldn’t be in the state it is even if everyone fucked their McDonald’s into George square 3 times a day. How will people mentally jump around this? The civic cultural heart of Glasgow is most likely being sold off for expensive housing developments. No amount of community action can make up the shortfall required to maintain these spaces. What makes Glasgow great and separates it from a lot of places down south is the fact that places like this exist and the state is willing to support them. But again, the SNP are on the verge of a super majority and the useless opposition are too focused on talking points and their careers to hold them to account for it. The tories are a shambles, labour a non entity, the greens sit about on the hopes of people who promise them their vote post Indy and Alba clearly isn’t an option. If we had a tory majority run devolved government/council people would be up in arms about this, but instead people will shuffle their feet and watch Glasgow collapse around them. They’ll blame fellow Glaswegians, they’ll blame Boris, but any remote criticism of the local government gets you labelled as a paid up orange order flutist who would hand Nicola’s head to Westminster on a platter. I understand that this is a nuanced issue, and a lack of support from the government down south has definitely contributed to this, but other cities are not having to close up institutions on such a large scale. by Crayonized (Thu 22nd Apr 2021 9:12am)
  • Been travelling all over the country for work throughout the pandemic, have only been 'questioned' once by Police Scotland when crossing the border with England. Just said I was travelling on business and they moved on without any further questions. by Crayonized (Wed 26th May 2021 12:19pm)
  • Inevitable and long overdue. Could look a lot worse! by Crayonized (Thu 10th Jun 2021 3:20pm)
  • People hate change and don’t understand why we can’t just haul in the original masonry and recreate what was there pre-70’s. If they did that and then charged considerably more for a lot less space people would rage regardless. I love tenements as much as the next person but the city needs a lot of new/more space efficient builds to accommodate demand. This will help keep things flowing and isn’t worse to look at than what’s there now. Plus it has room for local amenities beneath it which is a lot better than most of these builds! by Crayonized (Thu 10th Jun 2021 3:36pm)
  • The council is broke- the council tax freeze and equal pay dispute (though of course necessary) cleared out their pockets and infrastructure is really starting to creek because of this. You can claim that Glaswegians are inherently more clatty than others but that absolves the council of guilt. In Manchester I’ve seen street sprayers heading around dirty parts of town a couple of times a month- I don’t think I saw that more than twice in six years of living in Glasgow. by Crayonized (Sun 8th Aug 2021 7:14pm)
  • Sub Club is your best bet- followed by La Cheetah, Room 2 (depending on the night) and Berkeley Suite. Start a few hours earlier than you would back home and ask people in the smoking area about after parties- there’s usually something going on after the clubs shut at 3am if you ask the right people. The scene isn’t as expansive as Berlin but people take it less seriously which I sometimes prefer. Have a good night! by Crayonized (Thu 25th Nov 2021 8:33am)
  • What type of music are you into? There’s all sorts on the weekend, ‘charm’ may be subjective though…. by Crayonized (Mon 7th Feb 2022 6:40pm)
  • Not too much Trad on those days, if you’re about on Thursday or Sunday there’s a good session at the Ben Nevis pub after 9pm! Waxy O’Connors might have some live music on, if all else fails give that a shot 🙏 by Crayonized (Mon 7th Feb 2022 6:48pm)
