  • You might not be able to find anything in student halls as they do tend to have you start renting at the beginning of a semester, however there is always the possibility to rent a private accommodation. Since you're at Glasgow Uni, do look up the forums on MyGlasgow, there's one dedicated to flatshare and you might find something there (or just post a message on that forum when you start looking for a room). I've not heard about any plans for semester 2 though, you might be able to postpone moving until September 2021 seeing how things are going... by Heurodis (Wed 25th Nov 2020 10:57am)
  • Oh I didn't know this was a thing! The good news is, around March you tend to see some flats and rooms getting available already, because a number of people move back home at the end of semester 2 and come back only for a few days for the exams -- which might not happen in person this year anyway. by Heurodis (Wed 25th Nov 2020 11:08am)
  • Are there specific moments when Govan Docks are open? Last time I tried to go there the gates were closed though I have been able to go wander there freely in the past (I'm not much of a climber I'm afraid), and since I don't live in Govan anymore it's harder to just decide to pop there at random now. by Heurodis (Tue 12th Jan 2021 10:35am)
  • Thanks! I'll just have to hope they're open next time I feel like wandering around there then by Heurodis (Tue 12th Jan 2021 1:31pm)
  • If you are looking for something near Glasgow Uni but not too expensive, I'd recommend Maryhill -- you can easily walk to campus (takes me \~30 minutes) and find decent flats. Woodlands used to be fairly cheap, if you were okay with living next to the M8, but that has changed since they built student halls there. If she is okay with the subway, you can look around Govan / Ibrox / Kinning Park on the south side, keeping in mind that you are never more than 15 minutes away from the farthest subway station in Glasgow. As for areas to avoid, I'd say it's not so much a question of security than of quiet / hygiene (thinking rats in your backyard because the bins are not taken out regularly -- check that the interphone is working before you sign your lease). I've been here eight years and experienced much less street harassment and pick-pocketing attempts than in my three years just commuting between Paris and my parents' home when I was still a student there (then I might have been so used to what guys are capable of in France that the Glaswegian attempts at catcalling seem tame and shy in comparison!) by Heurodis (Mon 30th May 2022 10:17am)
  • It's already a miracle they found Glasgow. I remember talking at a conference in San Francisco and have full professors, including one "with Scottish ancestry" who "knew Europe very well because she spent a few months in France," swearing to me that it was way up north in the Highlands, showing me Inverness on the map. by Heurodis (Fri 10th Jun 2022 9:04am)
  • I've been meaning to try it for a while, but the first time I came across it was during the first lockdown so no luck on that. To be fair I've never even tried any of the other French restaurants before, they all seem(ed) a bit pricey and not really things I would eat. I can however recommend Le Petit Café in Edinburgh if, like me, you're always looking for crêpes – they don't have alcohol so no proper cidre but the crêpes are good! Though the truth is I would love to see a proper boulangerie/pâtisserie open in Glasgow (though I don't know the southside, it might just be there), because it's not that I don't like caramel shortcake, it's just that I haven't had a Paris-Brest in years. by Heurodis (Sat 11th Jun 2022 10:44am)
  • Ooh, thanks, I'll check it out! by Heurodis (Sat 11th Jun 2022 1:05pm)
  • No other way to know than to taste them! Didn't have any luck at Cottonrake in the past, they didn't seem to have them, but I'll keep an eye out. Thanks! by Heurodis (Sat 11th Jun 2022 1:49pm)
  • It's close to absolutely everything – basically if you like to walk you don't need to take transports at all in Glasgow, I've been living like that for 8 years and I live in Maryhill (north of where you're looking at). Exceptions when I am exhausted and can't walk a mile more, or when it rains too much when I already didn't want to be outside. by Heurodis (Wed 15th Jun 2022 5:30pm)
  • I wear my mask when in the subway / in shops and even though I'm the only one, nobody cares. Glaswegians are pretty chill, after eight years I found that if you don't bother them they generally won't bother you. by Heurodis (Fri 24th Jun 2022 11:34am)
  • I drink coffee. And read / write / play music / exercise (and hurt myself in the process) / play videogames when at home; visit museums / go to the theatre / drink more coffee / haunt bookshops when outside. by Heurodis (Sun 17th Jul 2022 8:36pm)
  • It's a very frequent question on this sub these days, everybody seems to be struggling. My advice would be to look on the usual websites (Rightmove, Zoopla etc.) and try to look further from the city centre / West End, as students and most new people will look to move there. I got a good 2 beds flat just in Maryhill for the same price I used to rent my first flat in Woodlands right next to the motorway, so it's definitely possible – though I remember that moving to a new city is always tricky as you don't really have any idea of where you'd actually like to live. by Heurodis (Fri 22nd Jul 2022 12:05pm)
  • Well, the Auld Alliance was / is with France, we (am French, been here eight years now) also hate the English, surprisingly we do have a lot of vowel realisations in common (I came here to study linguistics), of course we are welcome. At least I've felt welcome, especially when I reveal I'm French and not Eastern European – met a cab driver once who was quite rude to me as long as he thought I was Russian, and he got very talkative and nice once I revealed that I just have too weird of an accent for it to sound French. by Heurodis (Fri 22nd Jul 2022 12:11pm)
  • I was about to disagree but then I've realised that even at uni most people were not exactly sure to know what I was talking about so, yes, probably a kind of niche reference indeed by Heurodis (Fri 22nd Jul 2022 4:56pm)
  • Lots have already told you who you can turn to, so I just wanted to write that my thoughts are with you and that I am among the few strangers who care. Having been through this, my one advice would be to remove any temptation and triggers, and when these thoughts happen, until you've found a therapist (because then I'd send an email just to vent), just go to sleep with something you enjoy listening to. Mine was an old audio series from back when I was a teenager, it felt reassuring and familiar so it helped not focusing on the dark thoughts. by Heurodis (Sun 31st Jul 2022 11:26pm)
  • I love Glasgow but, yeah, even with the new developments all around (Govan footway bridge, at long last), it could benefit so much from giving the boot to the landlords making it impossible for local businesses to settle. Food chains are not great, I still am not over the Fopp on Byres Road closing, and while the city is definitely not worse than others tourists are fawning over (looking at Paris, which I originate from, that I deem worse than Glasgow to live in), it could benefit so much from reclaiming those spaces to have its own unique flavour. But I don't think there is a single party who would see an interest in that, there's only greed to blame here. Then this goes mostly for the city centre because what little I've seen from the southside (around Queen's Park) is cute, and I still think Great Western Road is a gem. by Heurodis (Sun 7th Aug 2022 9:35am)
  • Probably bad luck – the strike was mentioned already, and for the catcalling, I'm afraid it's less of a matter of where you are and more of who crosses your path. I generally found Glasgow better than elsewhere in the eight years I've lived here (and I'm often in the city centre), but maybe I'm not the the Glaswegians' taste... or just am lost in my own thoughts. In any case, sorry you had a bad experience – we're usually a nice city, and Glaswegians *are* super friendly! by Heurodis (Fri 9th Sep 2022 5:20pm)
  • We don't really know, unfortunately, though you have me curious – will anything be closed in Canada? Seeing as she was your queen and all, do you also expect mourning, or are we the only ones having to put up with that? Back to Glasgow, if Kelvingrove is closed, you can still have a look around Glasgow Uni's campus. You might have students if we are to teach on that Monday (of course, no one knows yet – we don't even have our timetables, and I got asked my availabilities to teach only this week after a whole summer of silence), but empty or not, it's still a nice walk around, and the cloisters are never closed (I've never seen them closed in almost a decade anyway). Except if the wedding is at the university, in which case, you might not feel like visiting there! Things like the Necropolis or Glasgow Cathedral might stay open though. And the parks – if Kelvingrove museum is closed, the park is still nice, and walking by Kelvin walkway you can then go to the Botanics without having to ever walk near cars, it makes for a nice stroll! by Heurodis (Sun 11th Sep 2022 8:37pm)
  • I'm pretty sure the offices will be empty, and classes might just not happen either; but I am under the impression that the main building never closes, though I might be wrong! It would be nice for security to get a day off too after all. by Heurodis (Sun 11th Sep 2022 11:15pm)
  • Just last week I cried for half an hour at my therapist at the mere thought that I could apply for a job in Dublin, because a successful application and interview would mean moving away from Glasgow, and that was too high a price. So in theory, I would say "anywhere in western Europe except France (because I know it's getting worse by the second, so why go back)" but in practice... apparently anywhere else in Scotland would be far enough. by Heurodis (Mon 12th Sep 2022 7:11am)
  • I feel like it's a UK thing, and it's just wild to see how shocked people are when you reveal that the French "apéro" is not something we do every night, but at most just on weekends, and even then – often for special occasions / when you have guests / when the weather is nice. Had to explain a few years back to my thesis supervisor that I absolutely would not drink a glass of wine every night to unwind, and that it would be considered alcohol dependency at best, if not alcoholism. On the other hand, I'll never forget the first time I saw a group of middle-aged ladies open a bottle of prosecco on the train, all equipped with their glasses, and cheering ceremoniously like they were at a fancy restaurant – and getting very drunk astonishingly fast after that, so maybe they were not that used to drinking, who knows. That was quite a scene to witness, still. by Heurodis (Sun 4th Dec 2022 12:37am)
  • Just good boots (think of robust soles and warm at the same time), but mostly paying attention where you walk. Some streets will have handrails, don't be afraid to use them if you feel the need to. by Heurodis (Tue 6th Dec 2022 8:27am)
  • I prefer the cold and got used to the weather having lived here for over eight years now (originally from Paris), but no matter what, you'll hate November when it rains non-stop and everything is flooded – there's visiting for four days when it rains, and then there's "guess it's forever wet coat month." And really, the flooded roads are a nightmare, but that's also because I walk more often than not; you need good waterproof shoes. Also, since you're from Spain, I'd say to be careful around the winter because the lack of sunlight can hit pretty hard. Again, you get used to it, but for the first few years it was really depressing. But you'll be delighted that in summer we rarely go beyond 25°C – I know that's why it is an okay season for me now (still think it's less pretty than any of the other three), when I used to really dislike it! by Heurodis (Mon 12th Dec 2022 9:17am)
  • ... so that's Finnieston, then, not WeMo. by Heurodis (Thu 22nd Dec 2022 1:06pm)
  • That's a big assumption, and nevertheless doesn't change a thing whether they're studying to be a doctor or not. And would that make you defend their side less if they were just a literature student? OP, I think you should do as someone else said and go with a box of chocolate to explain your situation; lean into the "mom had cancer and we live abroad, the kids have not seen their grandparents in a long time" (chances are they are far away from family too; especially if they do not celebrate Christmas and go back to their families during the winter break, they are likely to be Asian, from my own experience as a student and tutor at Glasgow Uni). They might just give you a break with the noise; if they do not understand, that's too bad, but they should know the university library is empty at this time of the year and they can have all the quiet they want to study over there from 7:15am to 2:00am. by Heurodis (Fri 23rd Dec 2022 6:12am)
  • Ignore them. It's a common scam, I saw it in Paris years before it started happening in Glasgow – and in Glasgow they actually don't get aggressive, while they are quite physical and hands-on in Paris. It may sound sad, but just pretend you never saw them, never heard them, and you'll be fine. by Heurodis (Sat 21st Jan 2023 5:30pm)
  • I'm sorry but as someone who grew up on that, endives au jambon (endives with ham and cheese in a gratin) are delicious. by Heurodis (Sun 5th Feb 2023 8:42pm)
  • That also surprised me with this post. It's actually cleaned regularly and rather well, considering the amount of rubbish thrown in the canals. OP was lucky that on that day, it was not a dead body floating in that "pond" – was a regular thing back when I lived next to it. by Heurodis (Tue 14th Feb 2023 10:33pm)
  • Welcome to Glaswegian (and tbh Scottish) storms, you'll get used to them pretty fast. by Heurodis (Mon 20th Feb 2023 11:43am)
  • Both the camera and the picture look so so cool, great job there! by Heurodis (Sat 25th Feb 2023 3:10pm)
  • I'm interested – can you recommend better restaurants? Six by Nico is currently my favourite (because cheap, and also I tried it when it first opened for my first graduation from Glasgow Uni so also sentimental; the downside is I can see how expensive it got, because it used to be a £25 menu), but I'm always down to try new things! 111 by Modou is (obviously?) on my list, just never really got around to go because it seemed far away without a car, and now that we have a car we also have a baby. by Heurodis (Fri 15th Sep 2023 6:18am)
  • As someone who had plans to off myself with paracetamol a few years back, it *is* far more dangerous than McDonald's. I shed the weight from the trash food I ate during that time, I wouldn't have healed from the overdose – even if I had survived it. On the bright side, I'm now *very* aware not to abuse or let anyone abuse paracetamol. Had to give Calpol to my baby after he got his first vaccines, I let him be uncomfortable (no fever, so just pain) for 45 minutes rather than give him his dose early. by Heurodis (Sat 16th Sep 2023 5:44am)
  • Better him being upset than ruining his liver; he would have suffered a lot more with a paracetamol overdose, and for much longer than just side effects from the vaccine (which are not dangerous for him). It's not like he didn't spend the entire day in my arms for comfort, too. by Heurodis (Sat 16th Sep 2023 1:47pm)
  • I have a neighbour who had transformed one of his windows into a Trump/MAGA altar. Got his window broken, he put it back together, window got broken again. He stopped, but now no one likes him and he knows it. by Heurodis (Wed 20th Sep 2023 10:33am)
