  • Hi. My mate had a stroke at 35 which left him with little mobility down one side and issues with producing speech (mixing up words etc). It definitely gets better over time, although some symptoms might be more permanent. He had family to help with a lot of practical things, so I'm not too clued up there; however, the Chest Heart and Stroke Foundation are a useful resource. 0808 801 0899. https://www.chss.org.uk/stroke-information-and-support/support-for-you-after-a-stroke/stroke-support-groups/ I hope your friend recovers and hats off to you for looking out for him. by Kevster020 (Fri 15th Feb 2019 7:29pm)

  • I wouldn't say these two examples are comparable. Vikings came from all over Scandinavia which has changed politically over time, so hard to link them directly to modern day Norway; whereas Glasgow Uni is an identifiable institution which benefited directly from donations from slave owners. Seems like a positive course of action to me, especially given the current political climate. by Kevster020 (Sat 24th Aug 2019 1:25pm)
  • I get your point, but as I understand it the decision by GU is entirely voluntary (although probably an element of PR pressure due to negative press), so I don't see there being a line drawn as such. If the current owners of the GOMA decided to follow suit, that would be up to them. by Kevster020 (Sat 24th Aug 2019 3:00pm)

  • So, she spent £8k over two years when the civil allowance gives her a £10k budget to spend (£5k per year)? The civil allowance replaced the clothing allowance, so I'm assuming this covers similar items. I'd be pretty fucked off if I lost my job for spending two grand less than my allowance. Feel free to correct me if I've picked that up wrong, but this just seems like folk looking to be outraged about something. by Kevster020 (Wed 30th Oct 2019 11:59pm)
  • I agree, it is enough to be able to buy your own clothing for work; but the point is that the allowance was included in the terms and conditions for the job. It's one thing to disagree about there being such an allowance, but another to hound her out of her job for using it (and not even all of it). If folk were interested in more than just venting spleen, they'd campaign for a review of council salaries and spending in general. But hey, they got their head on a stick. Who cares about the actual issues. by Kevster020 (Thu 31st Oct 2019 8:40am)
  • I wouldn't say I'm okay with it - the culture of entitlement in high positions in both the public and private sectors needs to change - but surely tightening up on what's allowed is more productive. The previous Lord Provost spent twice as much on first class travel (while her staff flew economy on the same trips), but there wasn't such a fanfare. Not saying either is right. I'll be curious to see if this leads to lasting change, or if it'll all just go away now the media and political opponents have their pound of flesh. by Kevster020 (Thu 31st Oct 2019 9:19am)

  • This is it. Refuse collection by the council is woeful, but the issue is folk just leaving things at their arse. I can't get my head round that way of thinking. For a period of about 5 years around 2000, one of my favourite things to do was head up to Loch Lomond - a spot just beyond Rowardennan - with a bunch of mates and camp for the night. We'd have a swally etc and the place probably looked a bit of a riot by the morning, but we'd clear everything up and leave the place tidy like we'd never been there. Over the next few years the litter left by others would get worse and worse - we'd arrive and whole tents would be abandoned, shite everywhere, until eventually camping was banned in the area. Just fucked it for the lot of us. The same mentality is there in city parks, too. 20 years ago you'd have crowded days in Kelvingrove, but the place was left in reasonable shape. Not these days even with the giant bins at the foot of the hill. I realise I probably sound like a miserable old cunt, "things were better in my day" etc, but the change has been noticeable and I can't get my head round it. by Kevster020 (Sat 6th Jun 2020 12:12pm)

  • The first stretch of the West Highland Way goes from Milngavie to Drymen and there's a bus from Drymen back to Glasgow... Or you can take the bus to Drymen and start from there. It's a fairly popular walking route, but quieter than Balloch. We're really fortunate in Glasgow to be able to access the countryside so easily - great for switching off from everything. by Kevster020 (Sun 1st Nov 2020 9:52am)
  • Heartbreaking. Sorry for your loss. by Kevster020 (Tue 10th Nov 2020 4:57pm)
  • Hi, sorry this isn't quite accurate. I work in homelessness - not in statutory services, but third sector. Initially during the first lockdown, housing associations weren't offering permanent accommodation, so there was a bottleneck because nobody was moving through from temporary furnished flats (TFFs) to permanent, but GHA made additional tenancies available as TFFs to try and help. There was still a shortage, so hostels were used more often and I think there will be an increase in folk who aren't presenting as homeless in the first place - plus there's less access to addiction and other services during covid (which has been an increasing issue since "austerity" was brought in ten years ago). I don't mean to sound pedantic, but it's not that the council stopped providing TFFs - it's more that housing associations weren't doing viewings and sign ups to keep things moving. by Kevster020 (Sun 22nd Nov 2020 12:07pm)

  • Did it in 7 days about ten years ago, mix of camping and bunkhouses. Milngavie to Drymen to Rowerdenan to Inverarnan to Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse to Kinlochleven to Fort William. Got the sherpa van to transport bags. It can be done in fewer days and carrying all your stuff, but I preferred to take more time and enjoy it. One thing I would say, if you've got any weaknesses or niggling injuries it'll find them out. My knees were gubbed by the end. Worth it though. by Kevster020 (Tue 6th Jul 2021 11:09pm)

  • Just last week I walked passed a cafe with outdoor seating (I'll not say where) and could smell it strongly. Can't be 100% certain it wasn't someone walking past rather than sitting in the cafe, but it was not subtle. by Kevster020 (Thu 28th Oct 2021 6:07am)
  • Restricted access is the issue at the moment. We had to request a smaller truck the last time bins were collected on 4/9 (which was almost a week after the scheduled pick up) so they're aware of the problem. The access restrictions are set to be in place till March 22 (although I suspect longer), but they don't appear to have a contingency. by Kevster020 (Thu 28th Oct 2021 7:51am)

But everyone there will be having conversations and making connections with folk from other organisations which help build resources and coordinate efforts on an international scale. Not to mention what results from global news coverage for people who weren't even there. I get your cynicism but criticising those who got up off their arse to be present says more about your world view than anything. by Kevster020 (Sun 7th Nov 2021 9:08am)

  • Electric storage heaters can be ridiculously expensive, especially if they're old. Have a look on line for guides, but the trick is to make sure they're only storing up heat overnight and releasing it during the day. There might be two dials on each heater - input and output - if the input is always turned up they will be using electricity 24/7 which will cost a fortune. Turn it up overnight and down during the day. Use the output as needed. These heaters really are a pain in the arse as they need constant attention, but could save you a few bob. by Kevster020 (Fri 18th Feb 2022 3:12pm)
  • Not sure I'd say terrified, but I do have a realisation that Putin may use Russia's nuclear capability rather than be seen to lose face. He's obsessed with Russia fulfilling a historic destiny and I worry that the only way he won't escalate the situation beyond control is if he is removed from power by his own people. by Kevster020 (Sun 27th Feb 2022 4:02pm)

I can recommend Lifelink who do short term interventions (like 6 sessions or so) and clients can self refer - although I don't think Lifelink will see someone who is acutely unwell - more for those who have an enduring mood disorder like depression or anxiety etc. by Kevster020 (Mon 21st Mar 2022 9:21pm)

  • Hi. I think someone might be giving you incorrect info, or crossed wires or something. Is the temp accommodation with GCC? If so you won't lose it due to being in work - lots of people in TFFs also work. The difficulty is the high rent for temp homeless accommodation. Due to the way homeless services are funded, the rent is higher than standard tenancies. If a person is out of work they qualify for housing benefit, but if not they'll have to cover the rent out of their income. by Kevster020 (Tue 1st Nov 2022 7:04pm)

  • I often think about a quote attributed to a resident of Park fucking Circus saying life had become "unbearable" due to the noise from the fortnight of summer gigs at the bandstand. If someone genuinely said that I hope they're ashamed of themselves. by Kevster020 (Mon 26th Jun 2023 5:59pm)
  • www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-44240492.amp Misremembered it slightly... Doesn't say Park Circus specifically, but near the park. Although the guy's called Findlay Menzies so I don't think he can legally live anywhere else. The quote is 'better' than I remember though... "My life is not worth living". Talk about a lack of perspective. by Kevster020 (Mon 26th Jun 2023 8:40pm)

  • "... Next think I knew they were stabbing me and I don't this is the sort of thing kids should be doing if they want to live healthy fulfilling lives. Why would they do this, I thought, as the knife ruptured an artery." by Kevster020 (Fri 25th Aug 2023 9:28pm)
  • Folk will still be able to shop during those times, but they must all turn and face the big screens and laugh maniacally at Janey Godly doing a painfully banal voice over on a Sturgeon news clip. by Kevster020 (Fri 8th Sep 2023 7:05am)
  • Yep, I've gone there for years with my old banger, so can recommend from that point of view. by Kevster020 (Fri 22nd Sep 2023 1:18pm)

  • That's mad. I work that out as 150 drivers EVERY DAY (providing they're paying the fine at £30) going into the LEZ with non compliant cars. I have some sympathy as it's folk with older cars (ie lower income) who are affected. Just surprised the numbers are so high. by Kevster020 (Wed 15th Nov 2023 3:37pm)
  • Yeah, the HMV on Union St was there till 2005 or so... On the top floor was where you bought gig tickets - I bought my Glastonbury tickets there when you could still get them a few weeks before the festival. Thinking about it has also unlocked a memory of buying fingerboards there in the late 80s... Wee plastic replicas of skateboards that were the rage for a bit. by Kevster020 (Thu 7th Dec 2023 7:00am)
  • You're right... I remember picking out what deck, trucks, wheels I wanted... Then getting a cheapo Skeleton skateboard for my Xmas. Gutted. Lol by Kevster020 (Thu 7th Dec 2023 9:34am)
