  • I’ve just moved in to a new rental in the last 10 days . I’d say he prepared to be told by just about everyone that your application is one of 20 something. You may be asked by a landlord to pay a small holding fee to keep it for you , I did this once and still they gave away the property to someone else . The process was long and annoying , in the end we offered 3 months rent upfront and finally got somewhere with that offer .   • Finding a place is Glasgow is a struggle right now . The rental and buying markets are just nuts for whatever reason . If you are looking at rooms specifically instead of full flats to rent I’d maybe go down the route of contacting hosts on Airbnb. It is completely legit ! Be ready when you go in , they don’t speak English but have a book with instructions for you to tell them what you want. I recommend the classic . Beef noodles (牛肉青）.   • I always check my bill , ask for the auto grat to be removed and then leave in cash at the very least what the auto gratuity was and more often than not a little more . Here’s just a few reasons why. 1 - I don’t trust any company in the hospitality industry to pass on 100% of the tips 2- whatever the servers do get will be taxed .   • If your health allows and if you are unemployed I guarantee you can walk into a job tomorrow in the hospitality industry . No doubt, it’s shit . The pay is shit and the work is hard but I really believe (almost) any job is better than no job . Working gives you some purpose and you can use that to grow . I’m also guessing from your responses you don’t have a degree , which is absolutely fine and not something to beat yourself up about . There are still several countries that accept non degree holders for teaching English . This is an amazing experience and generally the money is okay , if not by Uk standards then by the cost of living in that country .   • There’s a great app called Meetup. I stumbled across it while looking for a Spanish class . It shows all kinds of events going on in your selected city and it’s really good for finding people with similar interests . I am a recent returnee to Glasgow and feel my social group from before I left have somewhat moved in a different direction from the one I want to go in (which is cool , that’s life) .   • Unfortunately “fairly cheap” aren’t words that can be used to describe the rental market in Glasgow right now . Be sure when looking at less expensive areas outwith the city centre and walking distance to the centre to think about the cost of travel into the centre and work out of the saving on rent is worth the extra time and money to travel as public transport is expensive and , at best , unreliable. Also worth noting that competition for decent places is fierce and you might need to offer a few months rent up front to even be considered . Including deposit and 3 months rent upfront it cost me the best part of 5k to move into the flat I have now .
