  • Countries with successful containment & suppression of SARS-nCov2 have tended to employ mass-wearing of masks in public, ideally N95. Meanwhile you have countries like the US and UK which explicitly discount the idea doing appallingly in suppression. The real reason for the advice is quite simple - extremely negligent government preparation means inadequate supply of PPE for key workers, let alone general public. It is simply a fact that any mask, the closer to N95/FP3 standard the better, will filter viral particles and reduce potential aerosol transmission. Which is the entire reason social distancing is advised in the first place. Dishonest advice that contradicted this initially should have been framed in terms of the true reasoning --- don't selfishly use PPE needed more by key workers, because there isn't enough to go around, and there isn't enough to go around because the politicians are incompetent. But you COULD make your own (not that the government respects the general public enough to expect this.). Frankly when we have someone from the NHS appearing wishing to "correct misconceptions" I'm sceptical we're going to get entirely straight forward opinions. by gahetacicl (Tue 7th Apr 2020 1:33pm)
  • Yeah I agree actually. Legal graffiti of the "Glasgow Smiles Better" variety is grim and embarrassing, with a few exceptions like the tiger. Most commissioned murals are cringey af. Normal graffiti is a normal part of the urban fabric. The council paying for it betrays a lack of competence and creativity to invest in more durable improvements. Understand these are not popular opinions because guys are trying to make a living out of painting, but frankly that's not my problem. by gahetacicl (Tue 14th Apr 2020 12:07pm)

  • Good in theory. Sounds utterly ropey in practice when it's linked to new legislation from the same people pushing "Islamophobia" which is in fact a term which muddies the conceptual difference between "racism" and "blasphemy against Islam". by gahetacicl (Sun 26th Apr 2020 6:41pm)
  • Yea the so-called Trim Trail. This is the best calisthenics stuff in the West End / city centre. Next best would be the bars in Kelvingrove near Kelvingrove Subway station. There is a group on Facebook lobbying the council to make proper callisthenics facilities in parks, and not the noddy stuff that exists presently. by gahetacicl (Sat 30th May 2020 11:57am)

  • And apart from the baddie Tobacco Lords, tons of our place names are based on feudal aristocrats who were basically just heads of dynasties of native serf owners. I think we should do like the Bolsheviks did and just rename everything with a politically incorrect connotation stuff like Karl Marx Stadt and Leningrad. By the way if anyone's wondering why this sort of thing really goes on, it's because there is funding and jobs in the social enterprise/quangocracy for anyone in the woke activism hustle. by gahetacicl (Sat 6th Jun 2020 7:16pm)
  • If black lives mattered there would be a national conversation around Vitamin D supplementation, but that's not as sexy as some kind of Netflix series about killer cops in America, which is what these people are really participating in. The whole thing is absolute facepalmery. by gahetacicl (Mon 8th Jun 2020 9:35pm)
  • > The comparison to crackpots who are obsessed with 5G is even more telling. The comparison is that they are both protests. Not sure if you knew but in a liberal society we normally think of protesting as something you have a right to do, and not just something people you agree with have a right to do. by gahetacicl (Tue 9th Jun 2020 12:39pm)
  • Mistaken identity - vigilantism will tend to lead to that won't it. Cf. the senseless defacement of the Bruce Memorial and other BS. by gahetacicl (Fri 12th Jun 2020 6:54pm)
  • The local anti racist quango CERE (can't remember what it stands for) called for it to be removed to a museum, yes. I tried to post the write up of this from Glasgow Live but it was censored because of being "news spam." Not sure why "news spam" is less notable here than the usual inexorable shots of Pacific Quay at sunset etc. by gahetacicl (Fri 12th Jun 2020 6:51pm)
  • Yes, let's have an achingly sanitised version of Glasgow's heritage. The twee and impeccably left wing "Big Yin" is just the ticket for its main icon. Then maybe we could have more statues of Burns ^(except oh wait just before his break came he accepted a job on a slave plantation) by gahetacicl (Fri 12th Jun 2020 6:57pm)
  • Not gonna find much dam building material there. It will have to continue on beyond the barrage at Glasgow Green. by gahetacicl (Sat 13th Jun 2020 1:02pm)
  • > Those statues are of men that profited from destroying the lives of hundreds, if not thousands of innocent Africans Ah - this is proof that you're reading from a script frankly. Most of the Victorian heroes of empire commemorated in Glasgow, like Wellington and Roberts, were involved in suppressing mutinies in India, which were their major crimes. They were not slave traders. Napoleon, on the other hand, had a gruesome history with the Haitians... by gahetacicl (Sat 13th Jun 2020 1:07pm)
  • This may be a Photoshop but a publicly funded organisation (CRER) has actually called for this to happen. Anyone gonnae explain why funding quangos that daft is a good use of public funds especially at this time? by gahetacicl (Sat 13th Jun 2020 1:12pm)
  • On the other hand, they had local superiority of numbers didn't they? by gahetacicl (Sat 13th Jun 2020 5:31pm)
  • Not sure about "white" British heritage but outside of the woke Twitter/Reddit type bubbles, this is of course what most people actually think. The vast majority do not want these kind of statues to get defaced, or for there to be an uncontested campaign to remove them etc. So it was inevitable the far right would take this as a license to take to the streets. The idiots have provoked this. by gahetacicl (Wed 17th Jun 2020 10:26pm)

  • I don't like the OO or the walk, am pro independence and a socialist, however the woke dafties (who brigade this sub) & want to conflate every last thing Loyalists do to *Literally The Bier Hall Putsch* are dangerous political infants, and I've concluded they need to be reigned in far more than the excesses of the orange walk. And besides warts and all, Orangeism, Rangers etc. is part of the traditional culture of a section of West of Scotland society. The best thing that can happen is it becomes progressively less political and more heritage-related. (Treating it as our own local pretext for recurrent antifa shenanigans is going to guarantee the exact opposite) by gahetacicl (Mon 22nd Jun 2020 2:37am)
  • Nutters have always existed. They aren't news. What is novel is the post-truth mindset of people who aggressively tone policed on the need for lockdown but then supported the BLM demos, a flagrant violation of the lockdown. They then feign horror at the utterly inevitable counter-demos to the wanton and pointless calls for destruction of heritage like the statues of Robert Peel or the Duke of Wellington. Downvote away but deep down you all know it's true. by gahetacicl (Sat 27th Jun 2020 6:37pm)
  • God, exactly this, it's like the old "anyone who wants to be a politician is unsuited to being one." Reddit is dying because of this fuckery. So much for the "novelty" of a user-moderated forum.... by gahetacicl (Fri 4th Dec 2020 2:25pm)

  • Yep, been this way for years. I don't know why addicts would always chuck their empties in that precise spot. I'm thinking maybe one of the local sugar pushing businesses is trying to avoid a disposal fee. by gahetacicl (Wed 16th Dec 2020 11:29am)

  • Yeh because if you can even do one pull up you're already healthy and have an "active lifestyle" so it isn't worth the cooncil spending £50. (And hence the standard park callisthenics stuff, where it exists, is usually easier to use than bodyweight exercises, ie., utterly pointless if you're not decrepit.) by gahetacicl (Mon 28th Dec 2020 8:37pm)
  • It is, but it's also Rotherham scandal "adjacent". by gahetacicl (Sat 2nd Jan 2021 12:42pm)
  • Just a reminder, that if you like this view including the statue, you're a racist because that's Lord Roberts who suppressed some mutinies in India. (Local woke brigade want it torn down natch) by gahetacicl (Sat 2nd Jan 2021 12:48pm)
  • "Why are these incomprehensibly thick lumpen morons standing in the way of our Inextricable March to a Glorious Future Scandinavian Model Scotland etc etc." is also a manifestation of "polarisation. " QANON may be retarded but so is the failure to recognise that it is driven by real social friction over real events. Like the unprecedented decimation of civil liberties in the last 12 months. Like the real life scandals which inspire all the sex abuse fear (Epstein, Rotherham...) by gahetacicl (Sat 2nd Jan 2021 12:46pm)
  • The people that look like they're doing it effortlessly just fall and break their bones later on. If Joe Public isn't being told to do something by politicians and the police and big poster campaigns like "STAY HOME PROTECT THE NHS" in 2020/21 they lose all common sense. by gahetacicl (Wed 6th Jan 2021 6:13pm)

  • I have cycled 20 miles to Loch Lomond, put on a wetsuit in the robo-toilet at Balloch and swam in Loch Lomond at the beach bit where the scum are perpetually trying to build Flamingo Land. Can't say the water is clear though. It's about as clear as mud. by gahetacicl (Fri 15th Jan 2021 8:11pm)
  • It is the neo-Presbyterian legacy coupled with the "stay safe" Reddit-wank hivemind. Having said that OP should obviously test the waters carefully, wear a wetsuit, have a plan to re-heat afterwards, and generally not be an idiot courting hypothermia. And as for hillwalking, it's about as dangerous as crossing the road. You may as well tell people to stop cycling. by gahetacicl (Fri 15th Jan 2021 8:17pm)
  • Right. So the guy is likely motivated by racism and some of what he is saying is mince. I saw no evidence of him "threatening" anybody here, unless you count asking to speak to strangers in the street with a slightly aggravated air as "threatening people", which is ridiculous. Is there a legal problem here? Not until the SNP ban "saying things we don't like" perhaps. by gahetacicl (Mon 18th Jan 2021 4:31pm)

  • For route planning you can look up the "South City Way" (I think it's called) - the cycle route from Pollokshields to city centre and see if it will be of any use to you. This is a nice, broad segregated route that helps avoid the bulk of the madness at rush hour. In general commuting from the major South side residential areas to the centre is pretty popular.. it is quick, and the public transport links are crap (subway doesn't cover the "upcoming" neighbourhoods over there at all, First Bus just sucks etc.). by gahetacicl (Tue 23rd Feb 2021 10:49am)
  • Great idea. Outsource the bins to an arms' length org and you will just end up having more of the budget for actually collecting the bins siphoned off to branding and management consultants, investment banks, hedge funds and other parasites. The arms' lengthization of the council should be wholesale reversed in fact. Bring back orange buses. And graffiti adds character. by gahetacicl (Thu 25th Feb 2021 9:13am)
  • Pretty sure the "daily legally allowed walk" thing (phrased excellently here as if for a dog) ended last Spring. But Stockholm Syndrome suits a lot of people. by gahetacicl (Sun 28th Feb 2021 10:15am)
  • There's absolutely [nothing clearly visible on their website](https://www.firstgroup.com/greater-glasgow/tickets/ticket-prices) that even mentions a £2.50 single. It just mentions singles as "from £1.70" without specifying why and whether the price rises. In a sane world it would be worth your while to complain to the operator about being intimidated by drivers or to the regulator about the opaque pricing structure. In reality the only thing worth doing is getting involved in the pressure group [Get Glasgow Moving](https://www.getglasgowmoving.org/) to get First kicked off the franchise and have SPT operate the buses again. by gahetacicl (Tue 2nd Mar 2021 10:02am)
  • Observations \- Good idea, the place needs it, drive out the slum landlords, but is buying them out with hard (public) cash out the most socialist approach. (heh) \- Area can still be better than 20 years ago but still a shitehole relative to everywhere else just because other areas have gentrified faster \- Timing is kinda curious doncha think, with 2 months until it becomes the battleground to re-elect Our Dear Leader \- Moral panic every time someone mentions immigration is as usual awfully tedious by gahetacicl (Thu 4th Mar 2021 9:56am)
  • Shut it you you we are entering a Golden New Age of *High Tech Victorian Paternalism* and anyone that naysays is a "pure roaster" or something like that. /s by gahetacicl (Thu 4th Mar 2021 10:13am)
  • That's when I switched to "Rice and Noodle" across the road, but then that got a bit gentrified as well - prices up quality down. The hotpot places the Chinese students go to around Yorkhill and Partick X are good, but Ho Fun is kind of a Cantonese thing I think, and most of them are from elsewhere in China. "China Wok" in the Savoy Centre was run by recent HK immigrants so it was excellent for Cantonese, but it too got gentrified out of existence when the Savoy centre got socially cleansed by GSA types. It's almost like there's a vast MI5 conspiracy against decent Chinese cafes. by gahetacicl (Tue 9th Mar 2021 10:48am)
  • Mindless tags have always been a fixture, nothing compared to the cultural damage GCC has done with their twee murals (fashionably bearded man in a beanie hat smiling at a thrush, the size of an entire gable end, that sort of nightmare fuel) by gahetacicl (Thu 11th Mar 2021 12:46am)
  • Hmm... It looks as if all that the regeneration quangos have achieved in 40 years is to paint a redundant strip of green paint there, knock down that low wall, close the cafe (would be pretty grim on a grey day anyway) and knock down that gazebo thing, thus making the bandstand into a desolate cul-de-sac. I mean, GCC never liked open air bandstands because they're not private and distract people from shopping. Great value for money, the quangocracy. by gahetacicl (Fri 12th Mar 2021 10:30am)
  • Is your name Les Porter? by gahetacicl (Sat 13th Mar 2021 3:17pm)
  • Err.. Jumping about on the masonry of an A-listed building (old Govan Town Hall)? Old sandstone cornices weren't designed for that.. I'd be less annoyed if they were tagging. by gahetacicl (Wed 17th Mar 2021 2:37pm)
  • Hate to break it to youse, but the crowd of mummy's and daddy's that gather outside Hillhead Primary every single day is about as much of a transmission vector as this crowd. And I'm sure that goes for practically every school in the country. (But I'm not seeing any jackbooted - err sorry, hi viz - presence at these "gatherings.") We're approaching the point where St.Nicla and Polis Scotland are starting to accept that barring some moral outrage angle (statues! statue defenders! Rangers! whatever...), lockdown is becoming a dead letter. People in their early 20s have a legitimate need to get out and live their lives, and they're going to find ways to do so especially as the summer approaches, people's vitamin D levels go up, and all of the vulnerable receive their shots, so that the virus is going to be seasonally decimated again. by gahetacicl (Thu 18th Mar 2021 11:44am)

  • The ones around here are against the draconian Hate Crime Bill and are very welcome and healthy for the public's self respect. We've got a lot of nutters on the march but there will always be a certain minority of "Winston Smiths" quietly resisting. by gahetacicl (Sat 20th Mar 2021 6:28pm)

  • Original recipes this, old recipes that... what a fucking palaver and marketing carry on. To me the bottom line was they discontinued Irn Bru and replaced it all with some kind of Diet shit full of toxic pseudo sugar. And to think, none of that crap would've ever had to happen if the Scottish Neo Presbyterians (SNP) hadnae of taxed sugar. by gahetacicl (Thu 25th Mar 2021 2:07am)
  • Martin Bartos, as well as sharing a surname with a member of Kraftwerk, continues to be the sort of rare Green who gets the green-day-job done. I do however think, when listening to the nouvelle crop of public transport campaigners, that they really desperately need to just pare it back and cut the waffle - and hence force politicians to do the same. Cheaper fares and public ownership - and cheaper fares through public ownership - is all that actually matters. Never mind integrated, high tech yadda yadda. That can come later. Talking about too much just gives the pols on GCC an out - talking points for prevarication. When you make simple and sharp demands, it's very easy to hold elected representatives to account. by gahetacicl (Sat 27th Mar 2021 2:20am)
  • Meh. Rangers is a synonym for "reactionary working class people." It doesn't matter what they do or don't do, they won't get a fair trial on here by gahetacicl (Fri 2nd Apr 2021 8:52pm)
  • I would've thought the Rankine Building car park was listed on Google Maps by now as a skater hangout. by gahetacicl (Mon 5th Apr 2021 12:57pm)
  • Jesus christ. If the A-listed Carnegie libraries end up as subdivided yuppie flats under the SNP/Green's watch on GCC that's going to be one hell of an indictment. I presume what they are thinking is that if the case for libraries has been reduced to a public 'net cafe, there are cheaper ways to provide that. In the very worst case I would at least like to see a Govanhill Baths type of public-occupation strategy. GCC may withhold funding, but the community doesn't have to watch its public amenities fall into ruin either. Eventually the activists figure out how to get funded and the stuff gets resurrected as some box-ticky social enterprise paid for by ScotGov. Also, let's cut the NewSpeak: libraries aren't "venues" and councillors don't get to shirk responsibility just because Labour created the "Glasgow Life" quango as a front for implementing cuts. by gahetacicl (Thu 22nd Apr 2021 10:11am)

We live in an era of mass mental illness. by gahetacicl (Tue 4th May 2021 11:27am)

Paying more not to get redundant packaging or more than you need is ridiculous, I'm sure you can rationalize it all in some way, but I'm skeptical. First it was a few spates of closing alternate sides, then it was the slippery anti-slip paint, and now this red tape telling you to get off and walk even though there's no physical reason to. Clearly, if they don't get a Holyrood grant or a PR boost out of cycling infrastructure, they see it as a nuisance, even if it is actually more useful than their "city ways" or "boulevard projects" or whatever the latest eco potemkin village stuff is. by gahetacicl (Mon 5th Jul 2021 11:06pm)
