  • Is there any requirement to move a car parked on the meter every 3 hours (the Ringo app seems to think so) and is this something you ever check? How closely do you examine permits/tickets in the windows? Let's say I kept a ticket from 9 January 2018 (I haven't btw) and stuck it up today – would you notice or are you just glancing at the times? Do you ticket cars in e.g. motorcycle-only bays? What's the chances of one of you covering a specific southside street on any given day (e.g. Darnley Street)? by pleasurable_boredom (Wed 9th Jan 2019 12:00pm)
  • Haha imagine giving something from one of these shops as a wedding gift! by pleasurable_boredom (Thu 10th Jan 2019 11:56am)
  • This is really a dumb, pointless blog post. It's like it's been written by a (stupid) robot that's never been to Glasgow (or written in English). I wouldn't be surprised if there's one of these pages for every city on Earth, where some autobot has unthinkingly paired slightly wrong photos with pseudo-prose. by pleasurable_boredom (Mon 11th Mar 2019 10:36am)
  • Seriously, one of the first things you need to know about adult life is that no one gives a fuck. See that carefully crafted application you've sweated over for days? Nobody's gonna read it. They'll glance over the page for maybe 20 seconds, enough to gauge whether you can write English maybe and your marks are looking good, and then put it in the appropriate pile. by pleasurable_boredom (Mon 11th Mar 2019 10:43am)
  • I almost always use someone recommended on local Facebook groups and/or by someone I know. It's amazing how much business must be generated on Facebook. I couldn't really care less about someone giving discounts – I'm happy to pay a good price for a good job. But I guess I'm worried like everyone else about having to pay over the odds for a job that is really a very small one. I recently got a handyman on Gumtree cos I needed one at short notice. It was a bit of a gamble, but I chose [this guy](https://www.gumtree.com/p/general-services/j-m-homes-services-all-types-of-interior-and-outdoor-work-builder-and-handyman./1239044398) cos he had a photo and didn't look like a tosser, and the text seemed kind of friendly and helpful. He replied quick and explained everything well, so I felt pretty confident about the whole thing. And he was great. Also, another good thing about that advert is the "No job is too small" – cos I always have LOADS of little things I'd want to get sorted in my home but I'm afraid that it would be shameful/ridiculous/uneconomical to get a pro in for. So basically if I were you I'd maybe concentrate on building up some reviews with a few cheap 'n' easy jobs – putting IKEA together, changing light fittings etc. Get half a dozen good reviews and then you're good to go. by pleasurable_boredom (Mon 18th Mar 2019 2:31pm)

  • My only criticism of these toilets is they're pretty cold. But nobody knows about them so there's never anyone in them. by pleasurable_boredom (Wed 20th Mar 2019 11:14am)
  • My usual places: CCA, the upstairs toilets. Three cubicles, very quiet. I shit there at least three times a week. John Lewis next to the haberdashery pretty good. Busy, but four cubicles. 4G connection non-existent, so bring a book. (John Lewis next to the TVs OK but not highly recommended.) Downstairs in GOMA pretty good but cold. Someone mentioned the ones in Merchant Square – these are virtually unknown, so always deserted. Feels like you've snuck into a staff only section. Bit cold though. I really want to get into the hotels but haven't got round to it. Seems like they would be the ultimate jobby spots. by pleasurable_boredom (Wed 20th Mar 2019 11:24am)

  • Haha, when I read that I though about a one-legged junkie woman who used to hang around in the vicinity of the Tesco on Trongate. Could be the same one? I know that junkies are inclined to lose legs. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 9th Apr 2019 3:51pm)
  • I would highly recommend Woodside Crescent Dental Practice (just off Sauchiehall Street by Charing Cross). All the dentists there are really lovely and informative. As a super-nervous patient who left it way too long to go to the dentists (10+ years) due to bad experiences, I now attend my 6 monthly checkups without too much stress. They also do sedation, if you're especially nervous about some work. Again, I can highly recommend this service – I had to have a lot of things done after that first visit, and being sedated made it a LOT easier. Plus it wasn't even that expensive – thank god for Scotland's amazing NHS. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 16th Apr 2019 11:57am)
  • You should check out the site [walkhighlands.co.uk](https://walkhighland.co.uk), if you haven't already. Loads of walks there, with info about public transport for each. by pleasurable_boredom (Wed 1st May 2019 10:17am)
  • Rip It Up at the Old Hairdresser's is good though not sure when the next one is. Simply Thrilled at the Admiral is on in July: [https://www.wegottickets.com/event/468991?fbclid=IwAR3n0UXFavFeQdzfU26UJ1u9G4j8dMcUfb71nyks-TCaPlpxUZQmF-8pGoM](https://www.wegottickets.com/event/468991?fbclid=IwAR3n0UXFavFeQdzfU26UJ1u9G4j8dMcUfb71nyks-TCaPlpxUZQmF-8pGoM) The National Pop League lives on in the guise of Little League, usually on at the Academical Sports Club in Anniesland. There's always a Christmas night that sells out, and sometimes a summer night too (don't think there's one this year). Plenty of proper old people at this one, myself included. by pleasurable_boredom (Thu 2nd May 2019 1:11pm)

  • The only reason why you'd want a car is to get OUT of Glasgow - there is amazing stuff to explore in the surrounding landscapes and a car is great for this. But you can get by for a long time just going to places accessible via public transport and hiring a car for the occasional excursion. Just for moving about in the city, there is absolutely no point owning a car, as others have said. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 7th May 2019 1:59pm)
  • Are there still red-light districts in Glasgow? I know there was 10-20 years ago, but I thought it was all online now. I have never seen a sex worker on the streets. by pleasurable_boredom (Wed 22nd May 2019 10:45am)
  • It's not fair to say that it's not cheap to go on. I've been on three trips on it in the last 10 years, and it was about £36 per person. Might be a bit more now, but £36 for an all-day cruise felt like an amazing bargain. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 18th Jun 2019 9:47am)
  • Could you get off the motorway a junction or two earlier and get home via normal roads? It might take you just as long or even longer, but I'd rather be actually driving about albeit getting stopped every 100 metres at a light than crawling along the motorway. There's no worse driving experience than being on that bit of road at that time. by pleasurable_boredom (Thu 20th Jun 2019 8:18am)

  • There was a giant moth caught in a web outside my window this morning, with a giant spider greedily approaching a month's worth of dinner then retreating from the frantically beating wings. Nature at its finest. I went into the shower and when I came out they were gone. No idea if the moth got free or if it's now webbed up in a corner ready to eat. by pleasurable_boredom (Wed 7th Aug 2019 10:07am)

  • I was gonna say this too. You need to have a bit of money already to get it in motion (at least £100 I'd say), but you could make £200 in a few days easy. by pleasurable_boredom (Fri 9th Aug 2019 11:45am)
  • I was in this situation, except I didn't notice in the 6 month period. They made it sound like this would mean I didn't stand a chance, but in the end I got my band changed (the change was backdated to the early 1990s, meaning everyone who lived in the place since then would in theory be due a good refund, but I can't be expected to track them down). You'll be fine I bet. They'll come round, speak to you in a weirdly formal tone, take some measurements, and then you'll get a wee refund and cheaper CT. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 1st Oct 2019 11:38am)

  • They hadn't collecting our food waste bin in months (and the last time they collected it, it was after months too, so it was too heavy to move and they emptied it out onto the ground and used a spade, and our close was left stinking). However, we just got new bins last week (in Pollokshields) - big ones out the front instead of the wee metal ones at the back - and when they took away the old ones they removed the completely full grey food bin as well. Don't know how they did it this time, but I'm glad it's gone and hope it never returns. by pleasurable_boredom (Thu 30th Apr 2020 12:15pm)
  • In my close there are six flats, and in the basement there are six cupboards. We assumed when we moved in that one of those cupboards must be "ours" (though nothing on the deeds about it), but we didn't have a clue how to claim it. I put up a notice in the notice asking about it, and it turned out that the six cupboards had been divvied up among three of the flats - with one owner using three of the cupboards. However, he was nice about it and cleaned one out and gave it to us. As far as I can tell, a lot of the time there's no rules about these - it's just down to neighbours to work it out. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 19th May 2020 10:35am)
  • Had loads of mice in my office just above the RBS across the road there. This was before the lockdown. Tiny wee things, the size of meatballs. by pleasurable_boredom (Thu 28th May 2020 11:03pm)
  • Yes, I mention that in my post. However, there are loads of incorrect signs on the roads in Glasgow, and it doesn't seem to be treated as a motorway on e.g. Google Maps. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 24th Nov 2020 7:22pm)
  • Only with qualified driving instructors. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 24th Nov 2020 7:32pm)
  • But I'm not asking what smellmafishfinger thinks, am I? I'm asking what is the actual legal status of that road. The whole point of the question is the discrepancy between digital maps and the road sign. Sure, you'd think the sign has priority, but Google Maps would be much quicker to respond to any report that it was in error. If the sign happens to be the thing that it's in error, and anyone bothered to report it, it still wouldn't be suprising if it stayed in place for 100 years or more. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 24th Nov 2020 7:32pm)
  • You've already said that. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 24th Nov 2020 7:52pm)

  • Great answer, thanks. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 24th Nov 2020 8:35pm)
  • Yes, it's a weird bit of motorway. Must be a bit odd for people unused to it to think they're on the motorway heading to Stirling or Edinburgh and then still be gummed at junctions through Charing Cross. But yeah, would be lovely to run over. It's an amazing thing. I get why people hate a motorway running through a city, but the Kingston Bridge maybe makes it worth it. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 24th Nov 2020 8:41pm)
  • Would be interesting to know who is right here. I get that you can exclude cyclists with a sign, but what about pedestrians? I'd be interested in other bits of motorway dotted around the country that don't at first glance seem to need to be motorways. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 24th Nov 2020 8:58pm)
  • Yes, this has been established, thanks! I was kind of looking for more interesting answers than simply reiterating the information contained in the original question, but there have been other better informed responses, so no worries. • I have been desperate to get to IKEA for months but there is no way I would go tomorrow on opening day, on a bank holiday. Do yourself a favour and wait a little while since what you're doing doesn't sound so urgent. by pleasurable_boredom (Mon 5th Apr 2021 12:53am)
  • I have this problem too. One solution that is a big part of my future plans but which I haven't tried yet - and which might not work for you anyway - is to use a car as a mobile vocal booth. If you don't drive, this is no answer at all, but if you do, start googling cars as a reasonably neutral space to record vocals and you'll see a lot of people have done it before. Still need a good place to park and record in privacy, but that is a different problem. by pleasurable_boredom (Mon 5th Apr 2021 12:50am)

  • I get that the people in this situation were probably just arseholes, but it can actually be tricky to close the doors on train toilets. I have definitely stood there once or twice in my life trying to work out how to make the door catch and ending up just walking off in mild embarrassment. by pleasurable_boredom (Fri 11th Jun 2021 5:46pm)
  • The Red Sky Bar at the Radisson Red, next to the Finnieston Crane. Obviously you'd need to book and have a cocktail or whatever. And Cineworld on Renfield Street is back open too. Haven't been there since Covid, but it used to be the case you could freely get up to the top on the escalators without any ticket checking or anything. It's not super-high or anything, but the cafe in John Lewis (the one next to the haberdashery) has good views looking down on that corner between Sauchiehall Street and Buchanan Street that might be good depending on the kind of photos you want. by pleasurable_boredom (Thu 17th Jun 2021 4:23pm)

  • Industrial estates can be great for this. When I was teaching my girlfriend to drive, a few months ago, we practised manoeuvres in the industrial estate off the roundabout near Shields Road subway station (Vermont Street). That gave us total privacy all afternoon at the weekend if we wanted, and loads of parking spaces. Depending where you live, you might find something similar nearby. by pleasurable_boredom (Sat 8th Jan 2022 3:19am)
  • Use one of the services that checks for cancellations and automatically books you in. My girlfriend did it before Christmas and it's honestly amazing how efficient the process is for about £15. You can get a test in 2, 3 weeks. Can't remember what she used, but they're probably all the same more or less. Just google whatever one you find + trustpilot to check they're on the level and away you go. by pleasurable_boredom (Mon 28th Feb 2022 6:59pm)
  • Currently live on the top floor. No roof leaks so far (4+ years). I like that if there were to be a roof leak, I'd be the one to notice it, so I could be sure that someone on the ball would be onto the factor straight away to sort it out. Would be annoying to be two floors down not knowing if someone elese's procastination was gonna cost me, given roof repairs are communal expenses. I also love that I don't have any footsteps above me all the time. Never bothered me before when I lived on other floors, but now I could not go back to that! Top floor forever! by pleasurable_boredom (Mon 28th Feb 2022 7:05pm)
  • Glasgow University has run an evening class for the past 10-11 years. Usually, Levels 1+2 but this year (starting October) there will be a Level 3 course too. Every year, whether each course goes ahead depends on how many enrol. Usually they need about 10 to go ahead. Most years that happens sometimes it doesn't. For the past couple of years, the course has been online, but starting this autumn it will be back to being in the classroom. The course is very engaging. I know many people over the years who have taken it and then gone on to live in Sweden. by pleasurable_boredom (Mon 25th Jul 2022 3:06pm)

  • Another option would be to not do any of this! by pleasurable_boredom (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 11:20am)
  • First of all, as others have said, it's a lot easier to do as a couple. Second, once you manage to scramble onto the property ladder any way you can, you find that it's surprisingly easy to make the next step. Took us years and years to save up the £15k deposit we used to buy a flat for £150k (it was a little scruffy so exactly at home report value). Four years later, the flat's worth at least £180-£200k, due to all the madness and us making it nice, and the mortgage is down to £110k. So almost from nowhere it feels like, we'd have £70-£90k to play with if we chose to move despite being relatively skint in other ways. In two years, it might be that much more. It's kinda miraculous. by pleasurable_boredom (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 2:04pm)
  • Swedes love pizza, but as with other foods (e.g. tacos), they've claimed it as their own and developed some really weird variations, such as banana and curry pizza. No joke! by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 9th Aug 2022 12:40pm)
  • This looks great! Can't work out from that link whether you pay £30 for an annual membership and then it's £10 each time you visit or if the £10 is for non-members. Do you know? by pleasurable_boredom (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 8:06pm)
  • Yeah, that makes sense. You wouldn't pay £30 and get unlimited access I guess. Those £10s could add up. I think it would be clever of them to sell annual membership without session fees for like £100 or £200 cos I would probably pay that and then forget to ever turn up. by pleasurable_boredom (Sat 24th Sep 2022 9:58pm)

  • All the Glasgow buskers are shite. Any busker with an amp ought to be sent home, and that rules out 99% of them. I moved to Glasgow in 2009 and put the mad increase in shite busking around that time down to X-Factor stuff, but it turns out I invited it cos it's a Glasgow thing. I love visiting other cities in Scotland and England cos for whatever reason their main streets are not filled with this crap. It's embarrassing that we put up with it. by pleasurable_boredom (Fri 18th Nov 2022 12:06am)
  • As other people say, there is plenty of free parking at that time, with paid parking from 8am onwards. What might not be so obvious is that - as with most paid parking everywhere - you can pay for the morning ahead of time in the evening before. Like, if you put on three hours' worth (either cash or the Ringo app) at 7pm, that'll take you up to midday. (Likewise, put in for three hours at 4:37pm and you're good till 9:37pm.) No need to set alarms or take photos of the meter or anything like that. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 22nd Nov 2022 2:53pm)

Probably legit, but it does strike me as slightly sus that the ad is just "bike for sale" - and then the description says Ceres PT 1 whereas you can see on the frame it's a UB 1 like yours. by pleasurable_boredom (Fri 17th Mar 2023 2:53pm)

  • I'm not really fond of Banksy per se - yeah I am a bit snooty about him in an annoying way - but a big eye-catching show like this is great for Glasgow. It is incredibly frustrating how infrequently GOMA puts one on. Whenever I visit another city - London obviously, but Edinburgh, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, and then anywhere abroad - the first thing I do is check out what exhibitions they have on. I even travelled to Cumnock at the weekend to check out the Eduardo Paolozzi exhibition at the Baird Institute for fuck's sake. Glasgow, for at least the last 10-15 years I've been living in it, is far and away the worst city I've ever been to for major art exhibitions. There are a lot of artists here, and there are a lot of decent small-scale things going on. But in terms of big exhibitions that really make an impact - and yeah, get the tourists in - Glasgow has been a disaster, and GOMA is really to blame for a lot of that. Such a wasted space most of the time. So I am amazed and excited by the existence of this show - even if I'm unlikely to go to it myself - and I hope it bodes well for the future. by pleasurable_boredom (Thu 15th Jun 2023 12:49pm)
  • Good point about Kelvingrove - that's really been pulling its weight in recent years. I loved the recent print exhibition. by pleasurable_boredom (Thu 15th Jun 2023 2:02pm)
  • I live in the area you're talking about - specifically on Darnley Street close to **Pollokshields East** train station. There are no places where you could park near this station that wouldn't make our life worse, though tbh parking isn't as bad as other areas in the southside. Towards Pollokshields West, things don't get much better. Please don't park on Nithsdale Road or on any of the side streets just off it between Pollokshaws Road and Shields Road. by pleasurable_boredom (Sat 17th Jun 2023 12:18am)
  • I also hired Stuart Blyth, twice, to get the whole flat done. His was not the cheapest quote we got, but he came recommended. We had significant damage to many floorboards, and he did a great job putting it right. That damage was billed separately, and his quotes were on a room by room basis, so I can tell you what he charged for sanding and varnishing (4 coats): First lot in 2021: Living room 5x4.4m - £850 Hall (lots of doorways) 3.5x3m - £600 Second lot in 2022: Bed1 5x3.7m - £830 Bed2 3.5 x3.25m - £630 Box room 3.5 x 2.25m - £475 That fair added up, and we could have got a lot cheaper, but he had great attention to detail, went above and beyond, and stuck to the quote. One thing to bear in mind is that Stuart (when he did work for us at least) works alone, so he will be a longer time in your flat than other firms might be. by pleasurable_boredom (Thu 6th Jul 2023 10:49am)
  • If you visit Inveraray Castle, it's worth a jaunt up the hill right next to it - doesn't take too long and you get lovely views. by pleasurable_boredom (Thu 10th Aug 2023 10:52am)
  • It's one of the best - probably the best? - area to live in the city centre, but as in all cities, living in the city centre is not necessarily the best place to be. You pay more for a noisier life, and you do miss out a bit on a wider sense of the city and its different areas. by pleasurable_boredom (Thu 24th Aug 2023 7:16pm)
  • Late answer, but if it helps anyone else with a similar query, the teacher of the Swedish classes at Glasgow uni has a website where you can arrange individual lessons: [https://learnswedishinscotland.wordpress.com/](https://learnswedishinscotland.wordpress.com/) by pleasurable_boredom (Wed 27th Sep 2023 6:05pm)

  • Ah, I've been waiting on these. The sign at Turtle Park made it sound like they'd be in place a while ago, so I wondered what was happening. This is one of my puppy's favourite pooing spots, so these will brighten our mornings for sure. by pleasurable_boredom (Tue 14th Nov 2023 12:52pm)
