  • Been looking at a lot of home reports these past few months. Any idea why factor fees are so much higher on newer properties than tenements? I've regularly seen newer builds with £150-180/month factor fees versus £30-60 for classic tenements. Presumably buildings 100+ years old need more work and insurance rates are higher than something built 10 years ago. by qawmiyah (Tue 2nd Apr 2019 1:04pm)

  • Getting a residency visa with the right to work is a pain in the ass thanks to the "hostile environment" of the Tories. Unless your partner/spouse is a British citizen who meets the minimum income threshold, the most likely route is for a business to sponsor you. For employers, this is a significant expense: they can just hire UK/EU nationals without the added hassle. You could apply as an innovator/start-up entrepreneur but you need seed money of at least £50K. by qawmiyah (Wed 22nd Jan 2020 4:10pm)
  • A foreign national whose partner is a British citizen can apply for a family visa to live and work in the UK. Together they must earn a [minimum of £18,600](https://www.gov.uk/uk-family-visa/proof-income) to qualify with the minimum rising if there are kids. A British national moving back to Scotland/UK without a trailing foreign partner can travel on their red passport and settle/work without any income requirement. by qawmiyah (Wed 22nd Jan 2020 9:47pm)

  • We were scheduled to move on Friday. Notice to end tenancy submitted at end of Feb, movers scheduled, utilities notified. Wife has health issues so we were in lockdown even before the official notice. We spoke with letting agency and movers on Monday saying we cannot move right now, and both were totally fine with change of plans given the circumstances. We asked for a 3 month extension. Clyde Properties announced this morning that: "Tenancies that were due to end from today will have their Check Outs suspended and new tenancies are only going ahead where the tenancy was already in motion or to assist with emergency housing for essential workers such as NHS staff, for example". • Made the monthly trip to Costco - 100+ in the queue outside at 12:45 with fewer than 10 wearing masks. Took maybe 30 minutes to get in. The staff there are doing an admirable job of managing the crowds, spraying down trolley handles, etc. by qawmiyah (Fri 8th May 2020 7:37pm)
  • I'm in manufacturing - workers can refuse any work they deem to be unsafe, including coming into a workplace that has not performed any documented risk assessments re: covid, made changes to operations to reduce risk of transmission, provide PPE free of change, etc. You in a union? by qawmiyah (Thu 14th May 2020 6:14pm)
  • If the safety culture isn't already there, it is hard to suddenly create one. We're a small design firm/OEM working mostly in oil and gas with the accompanying stop work policies. Most of the senior staff are older with underlying conditions, MD included. Our head draughtsman refused to come to work until he was moved from a small shared office to a larger space, and the MD acquiesced. by qawmiyah (Thu 14th May 2020 8:07pm)
  • If PPE/the last line of defense is being ignored, I worry what operational controls must be like. What the hell is the person responsible for HSE doing with his/her time? We get audited by external bodies 6 times a year, and while we're not accredited to an HSE standard, that shit comes up during an audit. I know the HSE industry are an easy target for being a bunch of jobsworths, but the adage "safety regulations are written in blood" holds true largely. If your company not only rejects safety improvement suggestions but actually discourages them, that's a major red flag. Good luck with the job hunt, but in the meantime document everything and CYA as the sages at /r/AskEngineers always say. by qawmiyah (Thu 14th May 2020 10:00pm)

  • We started going there because Botanics/Kelvingrove/Children's Wood were too full. It is a great spot! by qawmiyah (Wed 1st Jul 2020 7:57pm)
  • The Children's Wood was our go-to spot for the first month+ of lockdown when we were only allowed out once per day. But it has been too crowded for a good while now unless you get there before 10ish. The kids absolutely love it but it is tiresome trying to get a 3 year old to understand why they can't use the rope swing RIGHT NOW when there's a crew of kids enjoying it already. by qawmiyah (Wed 1st Jul 2020 8:08pm)

  • I feel your pain. Landlord selling the place we're in, so looking to buy for the first time. Outbid on two since the 29th of June. We've decided to move to another rental property until we get a better sense of the coming economic chaos. by qawmiyah (Thu 9th Jul 2020 10:24am)
  • It is nuts right now. Commented on the steamie yesterday that we've already put two offers in since 29th June and been outbid. Availability of mortgages is down (5% LTV gone). There are plenty of people who have decided that green space is important after being trapped in flats. If you're selling, do it now cause shit will hit the fan by Q1 2021. by qawmiyah (Fri 10th Jul 2020 8:42pm)
  • OP you have tossed out the premise that all capitalism is exploitation and therefore immoral so rentierism is fine since the whole system is fucked. Based on your posting history, you work in offshore wind/GIS, which is great. Your labor would be worthless (ie cannot be profited from or add benefit to society) if there was not an entire organogram of admins, techs, engineers, managers/CEOs, and bankers who aid, guide, and fund your work. Your superiors and their financial backers profit from your work. You in turn profit and benefit from the work of those below you in the great chain of bureaucratic being. Rentierism, however, does not add value to anyone's labor. It is profit entirely through the exploitation of a limited resource, in this case, housing. You and your parents have housing, others need it, so you can charge rent. Your capital is used to maintain your investment and reap profit. The labor of your tenants makes this investment and maintenance possible. If your tenants had capital, you could not profit. You and your parents add nothing to the labor of your tenants. Ah, but would your tenants *be able to* labor if it was not for you charging to access your limited resource? Yes, they could continue to labor, but somewhere, probably less convenient and with more of a commute, a short-term landlord could give your engineer/programmer tenant a flat. Rentierism remains the same regardless of locale. It is noting but the exploitation of a limited resource by those who have access to capital and adds nothing to the great chain of being. by qawmiyah (Fri 10th Jul 2020 9:00pm)
  • The Boots example is odd. Personal hygiene is extraneous to the argument, but perhaps your employee manual requires you to be presentable because you are a forward facing employee. But let's be real: your labor does not depend on razors from Boots. I am not arguing with the fact you provide a service. You don't just seem to understand the economic concepts of rent and services versus a limited essential resource. I'll provide an real world example of rent-seeking for a non-essential resource. I work in manufacturing. We make a special kit for the oil and gas industry. We make, rent, and maintain that kit. We do not sell it EVER. We are the only people who make this patented kit. If oil and gas companies don't rent that kit, they could lose money because production goes down or they have to spend money elsewhere to ensure continued production. They don't own our kit, but renting our kit adds value to their labor towards oil production. Oil companies can continue to function without paying rent to us. Owners of wells in particular geological formations will save money if they use our kit but they don't need us to make a profit. We add value, but always charge rent for our kit without ever actually selling a product. We offer a monopolistic service, but do not constrain business because we are not essential to the continued function of the oil industry. Ok, so we have an example of paying rent for a service to add value to labor. What you don't seem to get is that housing is a basic necessity and is a limited resource. Oil companies, or men who grow heavy beards, don't need to pay for patented kit or razors. EVERYONE needs housing. Your "service" is only possible because you have capital and can buy a property that others cannot. Private landlords are not public servants but profiteers. You do not "reduce the need for someone to invest their own capital." You limit the ability of the public to invest their capital by reducing the availability of a limited resource. by qawmiyah (Fri 10th Jul 2020 10:53pm)

  • Yes it is. You need to bring a council tax bill to flash at the jobsworth standing at the entrance. We finally got our first blue bin collection of 2021 this morning. The shift to collection every 3 weeks blows. All the lanes are hoaching. by qawmiyah (Fri 22nd Jan 2021 11:56am)
  • Is mypark.scot in its early days? It only lists 4 greenspaces in all of Glasgow as having a play area. I applaud the idea behind the site cause my 4 year old is always asking to go to a new park with a play area. I end up on google maps just clicking on green spaces and then scrolling pics to see if there is a play area. by qawmiyah (Tue 26th Jan 2021 8:16pm)

  • One possibility is that the main restaurant (ie the business paying the rent and with the food safety inspections) is renting out space in its kitchen to startups/popups that don't have food safety certs or the kitchen space/gear. by qawmiyah (Tue 30th Mar 2021 5:52pm)
  • I like that Stewart worked as a teacher for 30 years rather than being a career politician (ok she did run before and lost) and she actually lives in the area. I'm not from the UK originally, so the notion that you can represent an area you don't live in is still a bit foreign to me. I understand that demographics here are heavily monochromatic (92% identified as Scottish/British white in last census), but a diversity of voices in Holyrood is sorely needed regardless of political affliation. That said, her website/twitter feed are very light on substance. by qawmiyah (Tue 4th May 2021 8:51pm)

  • Landlord rejected our request to get a cat to deal with the mice. I've had traps out for months and the little shits just ignore the offered cheese, peanut butter, nuts, bread, and chocolate. We've got kids so we don't want poison out. Landlord at least is sending out a pest control company, but we thought a cat would save the rent-seeking parasite some cash. by qawmiyah (Thu 21st Oct 2021 10:37am)

  • Current and previous properties both with Clyde. We were in the last one for three years and it was in a state of poorly managed decline (leaking roof repeatedly patched; leaking shower repeatedly caulked; cheapskate landlord). When we left, I spent hours cleaning the empty flat and then paid cleaners for 6 hours of work. The bastards still tried to charge us a cleaning fee. We protested the charge and landlord backed down. by qawmiyah (Thu 9th Dec 2021 6:58pm)

  • Anti-Arab shite twice in a week. First when a Palestinian posted here about secret places in the West End, then again yesterday in the thread about gun clubs. The guy's post history had multiple references to being bipolar, so perhaps he's having a manic episode rather than just being a racist fud. by qawmiyah (Wed 23rd Mar 2022 1:48pm)
