  • When I moved to Derby, I stayed at the top of Burton road and saw so many folk on spice I was scared to walk about the place. Both cities have rough parts, but I reckon Glasgow is generally safer (again, I'm biased). The rough reputation is definitely watering down, I wouldn't be worried atall, especially in the area near the uni! You will notice it's a lot more tenement flats rather than houses, which is handy of you're a student. Also, most of my uni mates are English so you definitely won't be alone. by The_QualityPolis (Wed 13th May 2020 10:31pm)

  • Probably not, but if folk don't stick to them we will end up in another lockdown, I guess the idea is stick to it unless you absolutely have no other option. by The_QualityPolis (Wed 23rd Sep 2020 3:29pm)
  • That's not true I'm afraid, landlords have to give six months notice currently if they want to sell a property that is being rented out. Source: landlord is trying to sell my flat. Also Google. by The_QualityPolis (Tue 29th Sep 2020 7:43pm)
  • It's a legal notice, he doesn't have to evict until and eviction order is served by the tribunal court (assuming SAT). The grounds in question have been made discretionary, and it's pretty likely the tribunal will rule on a six month eviction notice (inclusive of the two months at least already served at that point). by The_QualityPolis (Tue 29th Sep 2020 7:48pm)
  • I love how you said "top four" and then named five schools, it's almost like an indictment of the GCC schooling system. No offence meant btw, my school is definitely in the 300's in the rankings! by The_QualityPolis (Tue 6th Oct 2020 10:26pm)
  • Asking the potential tenants to pay either a referencing fee or a holding fee (even if refundable) is illegal under the latest Scottish housing act (I think it's 2017 but you would have to Google it). They are shady as fuck. Given the market for renters, you may want to proceed anyways, but be aware it's a big red flag! by The_QualityPolis (Wed 14th Oct 2020 9:44am)
  • There are still a few letting agents who do, but it's definitely the minority, at least in my experience! I've recently switched flats and had quite a few different agencies to deal with, only 1 out of 10 mentioned a holding free to me. I am in the west end(ish), dunno if that affects things by The_QualityPolis (Wed 14th Oct 2020 11:32am)

  • Make sure you check up the landlord does indeed sell the property once you leave - using this as a false excuse to make the notice three months instead of six is punishable by upto 6 months worth or rent payments I think - check on the Scottish gov website! by The_QualityPolis (Tue 20th Oct 2020 11:04pm)

  • Not trying to be a dick, or say I support or am against it, but I think that's kinda the idea! As there is no public transport, they are trying to stop people getting drunk by making them drive, and no sleepovers etc of course! What it doesn't do is take into account the suffering of folks who are isolated and cannot drive of course! It's all a balancing act however I guess by The_QualityPolis (Sun 20th Dec 2020 12:19am)
  • I understand your frustration, but the three week lockdown actually did it's job, by bringing the R number to below 1 (o think it was about 0.6). The issue is with the new variant of covid going about, if it's 70% more transmissible then you can essentially multiply the R number by 1.7 to get the reproduction rate of the new variant. What the means, is even if tier 4 is stuck to, it's likely the R number will still hover around 1, even with tier 4 in place (as opposed to dropping to 0.6 again). I'd wager that of this new variant continues spreading we could be in tier 4 until the middle of 2021 (although this may age like milk). by The_QualityPolis (Sun 20th Dec 2020 12:29am)
  • The reason it doesn't come up during trials, is because vaccine trials specifically don't allow people with serious allergies into them, this is true of all medicine trials in fact. Lots of people have allergic reactions to very common medications (the flu vaccine, nurofen and penecillin are three examples I personally know of!) Not trying to convince you of anything, just thought you might appreciate the extra info! by The_QualityPolis (Wed 23rd Dec 2020 10:49pm)
  • Because the only way to find out is to give them the vaccine, it's impossible to know otherwise. Also, it's important to remember that the reaction suffered was not anaphylaxis in either case, so It was far less serious that many reactions can be (for example, the last time I took ibuprofen I stopped breathing completely) by The_QualityPolis (Wed 23rd Dec 2020 11:12pm)
  • Why would you do that? You are too busy testing if the vaccine works and produces a reaction in people without these allergies (which are pretty few and far between). Bringing outside factors (allergies, or health conditions) into any experiment will dilute the usefulness of the results. Finally, these vaccines are being given in a hospital, which is a much better place to have a reaction than in a trial clinic setting. by The_QualityPolis (Thu 24th Dec 2020 8:41am)

Plus, as other folk have said, it's nice to actually meet your neighbours more by The_QualityPolis (Wed 21st Apr 2021 11:17pm)
  • I don't think it is causing harm, especially if you document the amount of litter picked and actually send in a complaint to the council. I don't think you realise how little the council care here, doing nothing will not push the council to lift a finger. But it's fair enough if you aren't interested in helping. by The_QualityPolis (Thu 22nd Apr 2021 7:43am)
  • Yes. Usually the freeholds are sold to companies, but yes. The idea was leaseholds were cheaper when they were first implemented, but that isn't the case before largely because folk are pricks by The_QualityPolis (Mon 3rd May 2021 6:09pm)
  • Agreed. I'm pretty sure they are as good as outlawed in Scotland now, however don't quote me on that! There are cases in England of the freehold being sold to companies, who then double the ground rent on the lease hold every ten years (which makes some "owners" have to pay like £10k to live in their own house) shoddy! by The_QualityPolis (Mon 3rd May 2021 6:25pm)
  • Thirded that JD is super busy currently, I've started going at 0630 hoping it's quiet - and it isn't! If anyone has recommendations for quieter gyms with decent equipment nearby pleas let me know! by The_QualityPolis (Thu 6th May 2021 9:48am)
  • This is undeniably true, but I wouldn't imagine it coming anytime soon! The NHS has proved it can rejig things to have extra ward space for patients, but the critical issue is staffing. In the big waves, plenty of staff were redeployed, cutting other hospital services (sometimes stuff like cancer treatment!) What is needed is a concerted effort to improve staffing, for example a good pay rise and commitment to staffing numbers/training/not obscene amounts of stress in your job, but aye it's hard to do overnight (or even get the support for it) by The_QualityPolis (Tue 25th May 2021 3:09pm)
  • Please do not send money in advance to anything on spare room, this is 99% a scam in Scotland, as taking a deposit for a flat before signing a lease is illegal! It may even be better to find a hotel short term or contact your university for accomodation help! by The_QualityPolis (Wed 26th May 2021 11:28pm)
  • 1. That's a common scam, you should only pay money on the date of entry to the property (it does occasionally happen that landlords charge deposits beforehand because the rental market is shocking, but it shouldn't happen.) 2. The university will be able to help either way, make sure you contact them for advice (it's part of your university fees, make sure you use it!). Edit: to add to this, if you have viewed the property and signed a lease it is significantly less dodgy, however I would still be careful sending any money (and ensure the landlord gives you details of a deposit protection scheme the money is kept in - a legal requirement) by The_QualityPolis (Thu 27th May 2021 11:28am)
  • He should be able to give you his landlord reference number! Scotland has a list of registered landlords, which you can look up their reference number, name and property. I'd be very very very wary if they refuse to provide this information. by The_QualityPolis (Thu 27th May 2021 2:18pm)
  • That's just not true I'm afraid. It's possible a vial may have some left in at the end of the night, but at the end of a vaccine shift there is generally one vial in use to avoid wastage. At least that's the case in Ayrshire vaccine centres, I assume the same practice is used in all of them. by The_QualityPolis (Thu 27th May 2021 8:32pm)
  • Your maths is correct, but those doses can just sit in a fridge at the centre and be used within a week (I think it's a month now actually), so there isn't any wastage! I know it's really frustrating, but these eventualities have been thought of! The system does have problems like not being able to book appointments, but is quite efficient at getting doses into arms by The_QualityPolis (Fri 28th May 2021 12:15am)

  • I think many people would agree with you if they had any sort of faith that GCC provide a value for money service, or are in fact using the money from bulk uplifts to do anything rather than be lazy bastards? by The_QualityPolis (Tue 13th Jul 2021 1:12pm)
  • It's absolutely obscene! They will chase me for council tax owed within about 24 hours though, that's for sure by The_QualityPolis (Tue 13th Jul 2021 3:08pm)
  • Hi, until the official recommendation is lowered from 8 weeks (which may happen soon) the NHS system won't allow you to get a jab (i.e. the iPads they have when you go into the centre normally). It's the same system that records which vaccine you get so you get the second one of the same type etc. Apologies for the bad news my friend, I'm in the same position if it helps, four weeks to go! by The_QualityPolis (Thu 15th Jul 2021 3:42pm)

  • Hi, I have a gf family member so hope I can help! Red onion is a specialist restraint that does frankly excellent menus that are gf, or vegan, or dairy free. The chef has a coeliac wife and used to work for a vegan celebrity so is very knowledgeable! Someone else has mentioned pizza punks who are excellent, although I'd double check about cross contamination with their ovens! In terms of cafes, a really good option is meadow road in partick, everything they bake is gluten free, and half of it is vegan too! Excellent wee place. You then have all your usual chain places, there are a couple of chip shops that do gf but I'd avoid any in the city centre like the plague! Hope you have a great time! Edit: I did not mean restraint by The_QualityPolis (Mon 20th Sep 2021 6:45pm)
  • Glasgow's runway is neither big enough for a fully loaded 747 or AF1 to take off, it's about 500/1500ft too short in each case. Since it almost always takes off fully loaded, AF1 pretty much always lands at prestwick, not Glasgow. by The_QualityPolis (Sun 31st Oct 2021 11:23pm)
  • It's not nonsense. If you left on a 747 from Glasgow then it wasn't fully loaded. Source for that is one of my pals flies them from Glasgow. Air force 1 always flies loaded heavier than Glasgow's runway can provide, it flies into prestwick. by The_QualityPolis (Mon 1st Nov 2021 11:21am)
  • The dreamliners takeoff length is 2600m according to a quick Google, there isn't a 747 that can take off shorter than that as far as I'm aware? This is assuming both aircraft are at max takeoff weight (which determines the distance needed). by The_QualityPolis (Mon 1st Nov 2021 11:29am)
  • "are at max takeoff weight" I've never said a 747 doesn't operate from Glasgow. The shortest runway length for a 747 at MTOW is 2820m, so the ones taking off from GLA are lightened. My point was AF1 usually lands at prestwick, as it can take off from there with a MTOW fuel load for long haul flights, whereas it cannot at Glasgow. Regardless, this argument is a bit irrelevant since AF1 landed at Edinburgh this morning (and will take off at a lighter load after COP since Edinburgh's runway is roughly the same as Glasgow's! by The_QualityPolis (Mon 1st Nov 2021 1:23pm)
