  • Check your contract. If you're supposed to get a set number of hours and if the contract does NOT have a lay-off clause, then he has to pay you 100% of your normal wage anyway. Phone ACAS for more info on this. by boredsittingonthebus (Wed 29th Apr 2020 9:40pm)
  • Where is it? Bloody everywhere! Just stick to the paths that follow the Cart and you'll see it. On the west bank you pretty much can't breath for the smell of garlic. It's so good! We picked a couple of sandwich bags full of the stuff last week and made some awesome linguini with it. Just make sure you wash the dog pish off first. by boredsittingonthebus (Thu 7th May 2020 10:46pm)

  • Don't drive in the city centre. I love driving but absolutely hate driving in town. Confusing lay out, suicidal pedestrians, nobody sticks to the 20mph limit and there are some monstrous hills with traffic lights, meaning lots of clutch toasting hill starts/epic stalls. by boredsittingonthebus (Mon 15th Jun 2020 11:42am)

  • I used to get baked potatoes for lunch there. The spuds they buy in are the size of rugby balls and they fill them right up. It's a good place. by boredsittingonthebus (Tue 4th Aug 2020 6:22pm)
  • I spent a week in Toronto when my friend got married to a Canadian. I'd never been to North America before and I love chicken wings, so my wife and I made the short drive over to Buffallo as an add-on to the Niagara Falls part of our trip. Oh, no. Buffalo was scary as fuck. We kept on checking that our car doors were locked every time we stopped at traffic lights. It was a very intimidating place in comparison to Canada or Blighty. Still, the wings at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo were stellar. Well worth the trip. by boredsittingonthebus (Thu 13th Aug 2020 9:53pm)
  • I really needed a piss when I was there (4 years old) so my mum looked at one of the big maps to find the toilets. "Over here, quick!" she hissed as she squinted to look for the toilets symbol on the big map. By the time she found it, I'd finished my piss already. I thought she'd wanted me to do it behind the sign. I still get slagged about that every year or so. by boredsittingonthebus (Fri 14th Aug 2020 8:54am)
  • My flat is red sandstone, built in 1900. I've lived in 3 tenements in Glasgow, all of which were red sandstone. by boredsittingonthebus (Sat 15th Aug 2020 12:21am)
  • There were flood defences built around 10 years ago (I'm rubbish at remembering how long ago things happened) and they've made a huge difference. The barrier runs from the walkway at Millbrae Rd/Langside Drive all the way along to Carmichael Place in Battlefield. Then there are defences from the bridge at the bottom of Sinclair Drive right along to Holmlea Rd. I live literally a stone's throw away from the Cart and my street's never flooded. As a kid I remember floods every year or two at the bottom of Millbrae Road. Can't remember the last time that happened. by boredsittingonthebus (Tue 18th Aug 2020 9:24am)
  • @Lunch Still haven't been there yet. I need to try their Cooncil Wrap, it looks so shite and so nice at the same time. by boredsittingonthebus (Fri 25th Sep 2020 10:58am)
  • My son calls that bridge Duck Bridge because of the family of ducks that hangs out there. The blue bridge upstream on Spean Street that leads to Weirs Pumps (can't remember the current company name) gets called Robot Bridge because he thinks there's an assembly line of bots that build everything. Whenever he sees the staff coming out he gets confused and asks why there are humans on it I tell him that they must be the technicians that look after the robots, so he calls the staff robot doctors now. by boredsittingonthebus (Fri 2nd Oct 2020 2:22pm)

  • Not quite yet they don't. They played against Albion Rovers today in the national stadium and will continue to play there for the rest of the year before moving to Lesser Hampden. Queens Park used to play in what is now known as Cathkin Park before Third Lanark used it as their home stadium. Cathkin park was the 'second Hampden' before they built what is now the national stadium (the 'Third Hampden'. by boredsittingonthebus (Sun 25th Oct 2020 12:23am)

  • I used to go there a lot when I was a kid. My favourite memory was when my grandpa came with me one time. He was a big man, both in height and girth. He must have been at least 20 stone. He dived in and the splash looked like it reached the ceiling. Good times. by boredsittingonthebus (Mon 26th Apr 2021 7:20pm)
  • Without a doubt the worst. I used to have to go from Barrhead Rd to Brockburn Rd... the road markings are a nightmare. Honestly, I've tried to keep in the correct lane, but then you enter a dimension where the laws of physics don't apply anymore. I've even looked on google maps to try and figure out how I should be in the correct lane. No. This roundabout is broken. by boredsittingonthebus (Thu 29th Apr 2021 8:16am)

  • Get the bus or underground if you can. Parking is a big enough problem for the people who live in the area. All you'll be doing is adding to the problem and stressing yourself out on a daily basis as you compete for spaces. It's a lose-lose situation. by boredsittingonthebus (Sat 22nd May 2021 8:35am)

  • The Counting House is terrible. It takes forever to get a drink at the bar. The only times I've been is when other people have dragged me there. • Worst for me was Nielston to Battlefield. I fell asleep on the train home in the early hours, so I missed my stop at Mt Florida. The ticket inspector woke me up at Nielston and I explained my situation. He said I'd need to buy another ticket if I wanted to get back to Mt Florida. I decided this was snide and didn't want to pay the couple of quid, so without arguing I just got off and walked it home. In hindsight I regret not paying to get back to Mt Florida. by boredsittingonthebus (Thu 28th Oct 2021 1:35pm)

  • I had someone's dog run up to my son (5) in Queens Park and took his football away for a big slabbery chew. I asked the owner to call her dog back, but she just sauntered over and said "she just loves getting balls". I said "And she's covered it in her slabbers now. That's gross." The owner looked totally offended, threw up her hands and said "She's a dog!" in the kind of tone used when stating the obvious to a dullard. My reply was "That doesn't mean that everyone else should have their property chewed and slabbered on". She didn't have anything to say to that. What I should have said is that yes, she is a dog and YOU are the owner. So if you haven't trained her well enough not to accost children and take their ball, you should have your dog on a leash. by boredsittingonthebus (Sat 20th Nov 2021 12:28pm)
  • Not to be Captain Buzzkill, but it's a no from me. I got in some states as a teen because some random adult or a pal's older siblings agreed to my booze for me and my mates. I don't want to enable this for teens. I know from personal experience that alcohol poisoning, injury from misadventure and becoming a victim of assault are big risks with underage drinking. So no, pal. I'm not getting your booze for you. by boredsittingonthebus (Sun 21st Nov 2021 9:54am)

  • The last and only time I saw a scramble was in the late 80s when the young woman across the road from me got married. I was about 4 or 5 at the time and didn't know what this 'scramble' thing was that my pals were excited about. I only ended up with a few coppers. The family had booked a photographer who arrived in a Lada. An older boy told me to go up to him and say "Nice Lada". I had no idea what that meant. I went up to the guy and said "Nice ladder". He seemed to know what it meant. I miss being an innocent wee guy. by boredsittingonthebus (Thu 16th Dec 2021 8:47am)

  • I hate H&P. They do nothing to get problems resolved. Nobody has been able to buzz visitors/deliveries in for the past 2 months now. We've reported it and after around 5 weeks they sent out an engineer. The engineer said the recommendation is to install a new system rather than repair the existing one, so they will report this to H&P. They still haven't moved things forward with it. This is just my latest gripe with them. I could list a history of our problems, but I'd end up getting too angry. by boredsittingonthebus (Mon 17th Jan 2022 1:22pm)

  • I lived in Moodiesburn until I was eight. We went to Cumbernauld at least twice a week for shopping and leisure at the Tryst and Link. I have some strong nostalgia for the alien head thing because I saw it loads and it heralded my arrival in the town. Woo! Exciting! I hadn't been to Cumbernauld for at least 10 years since I moved to Glasgow. Jesus Christ, the first time I visited again I couldn't believe how terrible the architecture is. I actually quite like a lot of brutalist stuff in general, but that town centre is depressingly ugly. I don't need it to remain, the nostalgia lives on in my mind. Get that thing torn down and replaced by something the town can be proud of. by boredsittingonthebus (Mon 14th Mar 2022 7:43pm)
  • That place has eroded over the years. I used to go a couple of times each summer as a kid from around 1985-1992 when I moved away from the area. They had so many cool animals there. I went back a few years ago when my son was a toddler - nowhere near as many animals, but still a decent attraction. Then the last time I went there were no animals whatsoever. It was really sad. by boredsittingonthebus (Wed 23rd Mar 2022 3:04pm)

  • I drive a car and do my absolute best to keep cyclists safe. So many drivers are impatient, selfish dicks and it does my absolute nut in. Unfortunately I regularly see car drivers getting furious in my rearview mirror because the can't be arsed waiting behind me while I'm giving a cyclist space. It maddens me when I see them tailgate me, often gesticulating at me, all because I'm doing something that they deem as wasting their precious few seconds. Then when I find a safe opportunity to pass with a safe margin of space, sometimes a driver behind me just blasts right through without moving out to give the cyclist space. I see this far too often; this selfish driver attitude has to change. by boredsittingonthebus (Fri 29th Apr 2022 9:40pm)

  • I drove to an away game in Airdrie and parked on the street. Just as I turned the engine off, a guy signalled at me to roll my window down. He told me this was his neighbour's space and that he has a kid. Now, I know very well there's no such thing as owning a space on the street (there were no markings or anything, just plain old street). And I also have a kid, but don't believe that gives me the right to expect nobody else to park outside my home. Did I tell him these things? Nope. I cheerily said "OK, thanks for letting me know. I'll go elsewhere. Cheers!" The reason I went elsewhere was not because I thought he was right. It was because I knew that I'd return to a car covered in scratches and dog turds if I'd said "naw" and stayed there. Somebody who believes they (or maybe their neighbour) owns a space on the street is maybe also the kind of person who'd react with their keys. by boredsittingonthebus (Sun 31st Jul 2022 10:30am)

  • I used to cycle in Germany a lot. Cars and bikes get on together quite nicely over there. Now that I'm back in Glasgow, I won't dare ride a bike here because I don't trust the drivers. Yes, it's a minority. But it only takes one to knock me off my bike. I drive very carefully and give cyclists plenty of space and only overtake when it's absolutely safe for everyone concerned. Trouble is, many times when I do this, the driver behind me is often flinging his arms up or honking his horn impatiently, all for a few seconds. The attitude of many drivers in this country needs to change. by boredsittingonthebus (Wed 31st Aug 2022 7:42pm)

  • There is such a thing as custom and practice, which is when something has become established over time, even though it's not expressly stated in the contract. This can then be viewed as forming a contractual term if it's been in place for a long time. How long? It's not stated in law, but generally the longer something has been going on, the more likely it is viewed as now being contractual. • Everyone will have their own experiences. I'm mixed race (3 quarters 'white' and 1 quarter Indian) so I do look a wee bit different. Many people think I'm from the Middle East or Italian/Greek. Anyway, it's enough that some people have pulled me up about it. Like neds in town on a night out. It's annoying as hell when it happens, but fortunately it's very rare. For a while I worked in a pub in Germany in a city that has a lot of Americans due to there being an American army base nearby. A touring singer (a black woman from Baltimore) had a slot one weekend in our pub and we got talking. She hugged me as soon as she heard I was from Glasgow and said the impression she got from singing in Glasgow is that "there is zero racism", as she put it. She told me how she got treated with racism in the US and abroad but felt so welcomed in Glasgow. I had to tell her that racism really is a thing here, but I do admit I did feel very proud about what she said. Either way, we still have to improve as a society to get rid of bigotry. Your original post reads as if you were only aware of that one place that had closed down. So if you had successfully googled, your question might have been something along the lines of "Is the chimney cake place in Shawlands any good?" But that wasn't your question. And the stretch between Croy and Castlecary include highlights such as a huge Roman head (modern sculpture), an alpaca farm, and low flying planes as they train at Cumbernauld Airport. He had a long, grey beard, played acoustic guitar in class, and gently pleaded "people, people" in his soft, Aussie timbre when we were acting up. I remember once when he addressed us in assembly, waxing lyrical of the wondrous thing that is the playpiece. We never thought Australian kids wouldn't call it that. It turns out they didn't have any name for their playtime snack. He just found it so lovely that we have a term for such a beloved part of school life. This entailed allowing someone to take one crisp from your packet and they allowed you to take one from their packet. But there was often a disparity here. • It's always been a total bump, but this is taking the utter piss now. Last year I was flying out to Germany (staying for 6 days) and was checking out prices for parking vs the shuttle bus, as I was travelling alone and didn't want to hassle anyone to give me a lift early in the morning. Parking at the airport for the 6 days was a con, but then so was the bus. I ended up renting someone's driveway for just shy of 7 quid in a street that was a 15 minute walk to the terminal. After my return flight I had the luxury of a short walk straight back to my own car, all for pretty much tuppence ha'penny. It was great because I wasn't restricted to the bus timetable. No need to wait for the bus to arrive when I'm itching to get home quickly. Or no need to hurry if it's leaving soon, despite needing a jobby that I'd prefer to offload at my leisure in the airport bogs. • I agree with u/lardcore here. Frankfurt's Hauptbahnhof is a cesspit of drunks, junkies and prostitutes. Yes, Glasgow Central is unpleasant but I'd take that over Frankfurt's central any day. Source: I'm a Glaswegian who used to live in Mainz. I got the train to Frankfurt at least once a month. by boredsittingonthebus (Fri 1st Sep 2023 6:40pm)

  • I remember these fondly. I also remember the jotters we got with FIRE KILLS on the cover. Being a classroom full of comedians, we all defaced them with an S so that it read FIRESKILLS before covering them with scraps leftover from our bedroom wallpaper. by boredsittingonthebus (Wed 6th Sep 2023 4:21pm)
  • Anniesland Cross looks intimidating because it generally is pretty busy and you need to make sure you're in the right lane. Keep alert to the gantry signs when you see them in the distance so you're giving yourself the maximum time to decide what lane to be in and move into it. by boredsittingonthebus (Sun 10th Sep 2023 9:28am)
  • This is all decent advice, except for that last sentence. People can and do get sacked for being off sick when they're new to a job. I'm not saying it's right or fair, but it is a genuine risk. by boredsittingonthebus (Fri 15th Sep 2023 12:47pm)
  • Yep. I pulled a lot of tips when I worked at Waverley Tearooms. Shared out among front of house, the chefs and KPs, I'd normally get about 30 to 40 quid for 2 weekend shifts plus a mid-week shift. Then the establishment next door (Bar Buddha) started to have till discrepancies. So they made up for the shortfall by hammering everyone's tips, including in the Tearooms where the tills were fine. One weekend I was given more tips than usual, as was my pal who was on both weekend shifts with me. We expected probably about 50 quid but instead I got.... 2 fucking quid. I told them there and then I was leaving, albeit I was a good little boy who worked my 1 week's notice. Bunch of thieves. by boredsittingonthebus (Thu 21st Sep 2023 8:43pm)
  • Response - this was over 10 years ago though. Their training for the Sky campaign was a complete shambles. What really got me was how they attempted to make money by initiating customer contact in a way that strongly pissed the customers off. They sent out letters or emails to existing customers that said their postcode had access to Sky's super mega fast broadband, just phone up and get it. But then they got through to us and we checked their postcode. Many of the people who received these letters actually didn't live in one of the relevant postcodes. We were told to blame BT who "gave us slightly inaccurate data", apologise to them and then try to upsell them some product or service they didn't call up for. There were people who didn't mind doing that, but this snide business practice rubbed me up the wrong way. by boredsittingonthebus (Thu 21st Sep 2023 8:56pm)

  • I can't believe I'll never enjoy Cheese Moments again. My mate once made Dick Flavour by mixing a packet of Scampi Fries with a packet of Cheese Moments. It's sad to know this can no longer be recreated. by boredsittingonthebus (Fri 22nd Sep 2023 10:22am)
  • According to one article I read, the council will have only two pools left in he whole area. I think that would be the Tryst in Cumbernauld and the Time Capsule in Coatbridge. I find that hard to believe that this is supposed to cover a council area with approx 380k residents. by boredsittingonthebus (Fri 29th Sep 2023 7:38am)
  • I first learned about the forts along the Antonine Wall last year. I visited Croy Hill on a very sunny day, just exploring the area without any particular route in mind. Walking down the steep hill towards that group of trees was incredible. I had to sit down and take it all in. by boredsittingonthebus (Fri 29th Sep 2023 7:55am)
  • Good point. The article I read quoted a Donna Collins, president of Bellshill Sharks, who said there would be only two pools left. But in the same article, Wishaw Sports Centre is not on the closures list. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-66954929.amp by boredsittingonthebus (Fri 29th Sep 2023 11:28am)
  • R-Cade is a very welcoming environment. The staff exude a sense of chill. I've only been during the daytime but I'm sure the evenings are just as good, if not better. They allow BYOB as well. by boredsittingonthebus (Fri 29th Sep 2023 5:36pm)
