  • This what I do when travelling to London, they open up 3 months in advance and for all trains usually as well. Haven't paid more than £60 there and back on a train to London in years. Did the same for Birmingham last June. The only place I can think which is not quicker to train it to is Bristol. by cass210 (Tue 8th Jan 2019 8:18am)

  • Going to echo Sweat, it's never that busy even at peak to have long waits for machines. The real trick though is to exercise in the morning. by cass210 (Wed 6th Feb 2019 10:33pm)
  • I've been on the merry-go-round of Tinder, Bumble and OkCupid. A lot of them have the same people on them. I'm now just surrendering myself to life after being on these because I just didn't seem meet anyone who I properly clicked with, if it's just hole you're looking for tinder is your place. by cass210 (Thu 7th Feb 2019 7:50am)

  • I've previously worked in one of the Big 4, it's pretty much driving license, passport and pass logo IDs. Based on what this guy is saying I'd probably be inclined to refuse if he didn't have a passport on him because of the hefty fines. by cass210 (Thu 28th Feb 2019 6:38pm)
  • I never went, the university cafe will always be my favourite in the area for just purely ice cream. by cass210 (Thu 28th Feb 2019 6:35pm)

  • I'm rough from my leaving night, excellent stuff. I've been going to the catty semi regularly recently, it's very annoying that they seem to play a lot of the same tunes whenever I'm in. by cass210 (Sat 9th Mar 2019 12:25pm)

  • Everyone always has the view Helensburgh is absolutely lovely (which for the most part it is), but then you remember Kirkmichael/Churchill exist and shudder. Nice place to grow up but I'd find it difficult to go back as I've lived in Glasgow for a fair while now. by cass210 (Sun 7th Apr 2019 4:12pm)
  • Genuinely nearly got landed on earlier today by a guy doing backflips in Kelvingrove today. Fucking idiot. by cass210 (Sat 20th Apr 2019 11:16pm)
  • Yeah I stopped going to the library after 2nd year. It's just too ridiculous unless you're in at ridiculous o'clock. Does your department have any computer labs you can use? Social sciences have some which is open until 9pm when I was there, and the Boyd Orr computer labs (if you're a computer science student) are pretty much 24 hours provided you sort out out of hours access with security in the bottom lobby. Much better than using the library. by cass210 (Tue 23rd Apr 2019 8:43am)
  • Does anyone else seem to win the jury duty lottery more than others? I'm 27 and feel like I've been constantly hounded since I moved to Glasgow 8 years ago. by cass210 (Sat 27th Apr 2019 8:39am)

  • Anyone know where you can reliably buy Mountain Dew in the west of the city or even out towards Dumbarton/ Clydebank? Me and my pal are making Texas Margaritas tonight a la Queer Eye but struggled to get a hold of the stuff previously. by cass210 (Sat 1st Jun 2019 11:05am)
  • You talking about the guy who used to have a loo as his donation box? Not seen him in ages, I kinda liked him for his ridiculous/mildly inappropriate song choices. by cass210 (Sun 2nd Jun 2019 10:13pm)
  • I went to one in 2004 and I remember some Scottish lady who was popular at the time (I keep wanting to say Motorcycle but it probably wasn't) played at it. Free day off school etc. by cass210 (Tue 4th Jun 2019 4:08pm)

  • I'm not a fan of Bunker, drinks selection is poor, the clientele are pretty boring, music is average and everytime I go (not my choice, someone else I used to work with) it always signals the end of the night. Just a very meh bar. by cass210 (Wed 24th Jul 2019 1:59pm)
  • Not planning on visiting today but does anyone happen to know if the T Rex at the Kelvin Hall is open later than 5 on the weekdays? The website says it is but wanted to check before I waste my time. In other news what an utter washout this weekend has turned out to be by cass210 (Sun 28th Jul 2019 1:44pm)

  • The receptionists at my surgery never ask why I need an appointment and they're always fine on the phone, must have found the absolute gold mine of GPs. My only complaint about them is they frequently forget to check my DOB as there's a lady at my surgery with the EXACT same name and causes the GPs to get confused when they're expecting a 60 something and get a 20 something instead. by cass210 (Sat 3rd Aug 2019 2:02pm)

  • Don't feel guilty about leaving somewhere that's ultimately having an impact on your mental well being. I had a realisation about how my job was making me feel when I was away on holiday. Toxic atmosphere, shite pay, high pressure and just making me feel like shite. 3 months after I got back, I'd handed in my notice and got the fuck out of there. Now I'm in a much better place of work and I actually feel so much more positive about the way my life is going just now. Like others have said, life is too short to stick around somewhere that's having an impact on your mental health. by cass210 (Mon 26th Aug 2019 6:28pm)

  • I find people here who complain about Paesano seem to prefer the much thicker, crispier pizzas like you get out of a chippy or Dominoes. I like those too in the right time and place, but in terms of actual quality and flavour nothing beats Paesano for me. by cass210 (Wed 25th Sep 2019 1:26pm)

  • I think the tickets only thing is very common, a lot of people in this city typically just stay in and have a house party for this exact reason. Also the 1st and 2nd of January are both bank holidays in Scotland and have widespread blanket closures. 1st is pretty much like another Christmas Day and the 2nd is more like another Boxing Day. by cass210 (Thu 2nd Jan 2020 6:05pm)

I know him for entirely different reasons unrelated to skateboarding so this was definitely gave me a wee small world moment. Thank you! by cass210 (Fri 15th May 2020 8:22am)
  • Sorry to hear that. My Gran is still in her house (at 92) but she's very suddenly taken a turn and they're at end of life of care as well. She's currently in her home and they've been really good at organising care for her in the house so she doesn't need to go to hospital at this moment in time. Just fucking shite though, I'm close to her and made sure to visit regularly over the past couple of years so watching her come to the end is heartbreaking. by cass210 (Tue 19th May 2020 6:22pm)

  • I did a masters 4 (!) years ago now. Was easily the best decision I ever made, but it was a tough old slog. I treated writing my dissertation like a full time job, I'd make sure to get in for a reasonable time, break for lunch, get stuff done in the afternoon too. I admittedly did work a bit more than your average 9-5 but I gave myself time off at the weekends as well. I found exercise very useful as well, I'd time my day round an exercise class happening 6-7 and then make sure I did enough to be able to go to the class. You got this. :) by cass210 (Sun 28th Jun 2020 1:39pm)
  • There's a was a thread a few weeks ago about local producers, I bought mine from Pure Barkin if you search on Facebook. Other option is go on esty and search for masks and pick local (I chose Scotland), I got a grey tartan a la Big Nic and one from a studio in Edinburgh last night. by cass210 (Fri 3rd Jul 2020 8:26am)
  • I've got 2b/c hair but wasn't aware for a long time (my mum's advice was just to straighten it) until I started following some guides on the internet. I then switched to a friend of mine Sean who's in Scrimshaws in town and he politely informed me that my hair hadn't been cut for waves (first time someone has ever noticed this) and since going to him my hair has been so much better. Would recommend! by cass210 (Sun 5th Jul 2020 10:53am)
  • I'm on the committee for a local community run dance society which does partnered dancing, we won't be looking to run classes again until at least phase 4 and beyond. But definitely a good option, dancing has honestly changed my life. by cass210 (Thu 9th Jul 2020 11:39am)
  • What kind of dancing were you looking for? I'm very surprised you are saying you couldn't find classes for adults, although kids classes is most of the market, adults classes aren't hard to find for the things I look for. My main dance is Lindy Hop which tends to attract mid 20s onwards type of folk. The group I'm part of don't offer classes for children at all (although probably could if requested, but take up is low enough for adults that it'd have to be a very high demand. Lindy Hop is quite niche). by cass210 (Thu 9th Jul 2020 9:48pm)
  • As someone who has larger than average bosoms, I'd need to cut some eye holes in mine and they'd make fine fencing masks. by cass210 (Fri 10th Jul 2020 8:14pm)

  • I'm a software engineer. My works set up has been pretty crappy for sending us all home and my team is very collaborative in working so working from home has been pretty hard for the team and our time developing stories has gone through the floor. I think if I had a different team and technology setup then WFH would be fine, but this set up isn't enjoyable for me in the long term. We're probably not going back until 2021 it seems like. by cass210 (Tue 14th Jul 2020 7:49pm)
  • So I just googled out of curiosity and yup, Joseph is a top guy. I used to get my haircut off him, but he gave up women's hairdressing a few years ago and I was absolutely gutted to have to go find a new hairdresser. Nice to see he's doing well! by cass210 (Fri 17th Jul 2020 8:27am)

  • I was driving along the A81 at the back of the science park and the amount of separate groups of young teenagers for more than 6 was completely ridiculous. Last weekend I saw a group of more than 6 near the expressway, one who had a bottle of bucky and was clearly not taking it well. I'm surprised to see so many teenagers going about like this, I'm not sure if I was a teenager if my mum would be letting me out at all given the behaviour I've seen. by cass210 (Sun 27th Sep 2020 1:23am)

  • I'm a full-time glasses wearer - I found a tip on Facebook where it recommended placing a piece of tissue along the top of the mask. It's not 100% foolproof but it resolves most of my issues. In addition, I stick my glasses slightly further down my nose to try and create an extra seal. Hope this helps! by cass210 (Wed 7th Oct 2020 2:28pm)

  • I picked up the Wednesday Wheat Beer last Friday, so they have it in stock for sure. However, one of the staff has since tested positive for Covid since I visited the shop and I saw they had closed the shop as a precaution so you may have to do your trudge to Waitrose if you really want to try it. by cass210 (Thu 15th Oct 2020 5:54pm)

  • I've admittedly got a very strange looking address (my building has flat number, building name, street number then street address so it looks like two street addresses) so I always leave notes for the driver. I still don't get it though as all the mapping software, if you type in my postcode it leads you straight to my door. by cass210 (Sat 7th Nov 2020 10:09am)
  • I did travel from GCC to another tier 3 council area at the weekend to go for a walk. Outdoor exercise counts as an essential reason. I wouldn't go to an area which has less restrictions, but with so much of the central belt being tier 3 I don't see what difference it makes at this time as long as you're not taking the piss. As someone said, the restrictions are meant to make you think twice rather than being a ban on travelling. by cass210 (Thu 12th Nov 2020 8:21pm)
  • I took private transportation there and back, washed my hands, socially distanced and wore a mask when necessary. I took all the necessary precautions and for me going on a walk on a nice Saturday afternoon with a friend who I've not seen for 3 months was good for my mental health. In terms of breaking the rules, I'm hardly the worst offender here when you see cases continually rising and people having gender naming parties with 50+ people despite me working from home all week and hardly seeing anyone. by cass210 (Thu 12th Nov 2020 8:41pm)

  • I didn't realise quite how much I was suppressing feelings about this whole thing when last night out of nowhere I had a rant about how my life has never been 'back to normal' at any stage since March. I'm a dancer and committee member of a local non-profit group. I'm normally out 1-2 times a week and regularly attend weekend trips away to dance workshops. At no point, under ANY of the proposed frameworks we've had, could any of my usual dancing activities be held. There is also no real provision to do this even if we get to a 'life until get the vaccine' stage. I think it's absolutely right we do need to stop such risky activities at this time, but it's incredibly frustrating that for some people, life did become more normal, whilst for me it hasn't. In addition, I play D&D. Again, we haven't been able to play indoors during any of the frameworks put in place. We are online so at least this can happen, but again still no return to normality anytime soon. Our full party hasn't been together since March. I've been working from home since March. Now it's dark when I finish work, and there is nowhere for me to go after work to let off some steam. On the plus side, I've ended up completing a beginners sewing course and trying to make my way into beginner's dressmaking which is something I've fancied for a while and I've never exercised so much in my life. Hopefully I can at least get a Christmas with my parents (a far cry from the 15-20+ people we usually have for Christmas). by cass210 (Tue 17th Nov 2020 11:28am)

I think there's a lot of fans of either side who go 'Aye but we're not the baddies, it's them' when in reality there's hooliganism on both sides which needs to be dealt with. by cass210 (Mon 30th Nov 2020 11:45am)

What an absolute masterpiece. The finale with Sozin's Comet was a tremendous way to end my Saturday night. • We had a committee meeting last night in my group to discuss next steps, I think some stuff will happen now but not in the way it did before by cass210 (Thu 22nd Apr 2021 1:16pm)
  • I'd rather not say as it will definitely give away who I am, my stuff is quite niche I feel like it's more risky than an indoor contact sport, given the proximity and time with partners, as well as you said normally way more cramped environments than a typical indoor sport such as basketball. We're only looking at trialling an outdoor class of sorts with just members of the committee to see how it is by cass210 (Thu 22nd Apr 2021 2:14pm)

  • I always hate that roundabout, not so bad if you're heading to the motorway but I've still yet to figure out what is the correct lane from the motorway to the Clyde tunnel. by cass210 (Thu 29th Apr 2021 8:49am)
  • Not Glasgow but my most despised roundabout is the tiny one sandwiched between Morrisons and the retail park in Dumbarton. It's far too wee for the amount of traffic it serves. by cass210 (Thu 29th Apr 2021 8:51am)

  • Not having grown up in Glasgow, but having lived here for over 10 years now, I run into this quite a lot. I have no clue why it's a thing. I recently had a first date where the guy decided it was a super nice thing to say /s that I had a Glasgow Uni accent. Maybe it's just as well it never went beyond a first date because if that's what he says when he meets me I dread to think what he'd say further down the line. by cass210 (Tue 11th May 2021 8:51am)

  • I do find the history of why the M8 is the way of is quite fascinating which I believe is down to this report. The guy was apparently inspired by all the inner city highways of LA which is why it's built in the way it is. • Runners do this to each other as well. I'm quite a slow runner and the really speedy ones just zoom past me with no warning. I've experienced the flip side of this, my mum's a runner and she refuses to do this, but then she basically is forever on the road to avoid people, even when there is enough space to pass comfortably and the risk of passing someone is minimal. She lives in a small town with minimal traffic though so she can get away with a lot of road running. by cass210 (Tue 25th May 2021 8:21am)

I put my bowl on a scale and then add: 50g porridge oats Top up with milk until 200g ish If adding frozen fruit, add 80gish and put in the fridge. In the morning, I take it out. If adding fresh fruit, chop and add it now. Top with chia seeds and a sprinkling of cacao powder if I fancy some chocolate goodness. by cass210 (Sat 29th May 2021 11:25am)

  • Not threading, but I've had a good experience with Designer Waxing in town, they seem to actually pay attention to my brows natural shape unlike the many various ladies I've had my eyebrows threaded with over the years. Lockdown eyebrows has made me realise how bad they were, but looking much better now after months of uninterrupted growth. by cass210 (Mon 21st Jun 2021 9:39am)
  • A lot of people think I'm really weird for rarely ordering anything off Amazon, I pretty much exclusively shop on eBay for anything that I'd need off there. I find the prices are a bit lower and I don't need to jump through hoops to get free shipping. Amazon is only really good these days if you have prime, which I don't. by cass210 (Tue 22nd Jun 2021 8:32am)
  • That's so rough! A lot of people don't seem to realise the risks associated with hormonal birth control. I myself decided to go with the copper IUD after deciding I didn't want to carry on taking hormonal birth control almost 5 years ago (!) and although it was sore getting it in, I've had a much greater piece of mind. • I've never been but I've only been to Alton Towers in the UK so I imagine I would be highly disappointed. Surely there's scope for a theme park like Alton Towers or Thorpe Park but in Scotland/North of England. Or is that what Blackpool is supposed to be? by cass210 (Tue 22nd Jun 2021 1:55pm)
  • I'm watching on Disney + and I believe that's the exact order I've watched the episodes. Somebody was listening there! I can imagine it would get confusing, especially if they did the second one with Christina Hendricks before the one where she was introduced. by cass210 (Tue 22nd Jun 2021 2:31pm)
  • I've stayed at the Alton towers hotel (was pals with a girl whose family only ever went to theme parks on holiday) and what I will say is that the Alton towers hotel is super nice from what I recall, and you could get up early to get on rides before the park opens. They also used to have a mad water park themed hotel which was great fun too, but this was a good part of 20 years ago so it could have changed. by cass210 (Tue 22nd Jun 2021 8:13pm)
  • At least I got to experience a Scotland goal in a men's international football tournament final. I'm of an age where I don't remember them in France 1998, though there is evidence that I was dressed up in Scotland t-shirts on holiday in France for the occasion. And also not losing to England, I'll take that. by cass210 (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 8:24am)

  • I think Helensburgh seafront offers some of the best sunset views in the central belt, but I'm biased since I grew up there. Also has the bonus you could get a meal and some ice cream from Dino's (accept nothing else there, even if he is the grumpiest owner of an ice cream shop you ever did see) before sitting on the front and watching the sun set over the Forth of Clyde and the Rosneath Peninsula. by cass210 (Mon 5th Jul 2021 4:20pm)
  • My team moved to AWS last year so I always feel like a pure n00b, but I checked out what you're using on AWS and I actually understood all the words! Success. by cass210 (Tue 6th Jul 2021 8:43am)
  • That's good! The Steamie is the perfect candidate for a lambda tbh, given how it's just a once a day type job. And yeah I can imagine it's much easier to administer! The documentation on how to do stuff on AWS is actually pretty comprehensive, my main complaint is that the company I'm with (for security reasons) won't give us extra permissions because our account setup means that live is in the same account as Dev and it's difficult to separate permissions by environment apparently with their setup. But that's on them to give us separate accounts for environments. πŸ™ƒ by cass210 (Tue 6th Jul 2021 9:03am)

  • I started sewing during lockdown so Im in the habit of buying everything online and then just getting it printed A0 and sent to my house. I managed to pick up a used Love at First Stitch by Tilly Walnes which I would recommend if you like the look of the patterns, it's a great reference book. All the patterns are printed double sided so you will need to trace. by cass210 (Tue 13th Jul 2021 8:40am)

  • Has anyone had any recent experiences with the Leather by Morgan shop round the back of St Enochs? I've been trying to up my wardrobe game and I fancy a nice biker jacket. Due to my body type I'd rather make sure it actually fits before I fork out the cash for one. I saw there was a thread a couple of years ago in here but it didn't mention what the typical price range was, which I can't Google as they have no internet presence. The guy has got excellent reviews on Google so he must be doing something right. Similarly if there's anywhere else anyone would recommend for a biker jacket then let me know. Cheers! • I think realistically, of course public transport should be improved by integrating the ticketing systems, but there's no getting round that some areas of the city are just a pain to get to without a car. As you say, increasing on demand car hire would negate people owning their own vehicles and reduce the amount of cars parked doing nothing 99% of the time Edit: also forgot that they should just improve some journeys. Why does it take me 2 buses and over an hour to get from Anniesland to Dennistoun when I can just take a taxi and it takes 20 minutes by cass210 (Thu 16th Sep 2021 8:36am)

I think it's incredibly important to discuss city news, but due to the actions of one user (we all know who they are) it's effectively banned. I'm not sure what can be done about it, this isn't a big enough traffic sub by itself to set up another sub, this is par for the course in other big subreddits when the user's don't agree with mod rules but alas I'm not sure what can be done about it on Reddit. by cass210 (Tue 28th Sep 2021 12:50pm)

  • A situation I warned people about 6 days ago in work ended up coming to fruition thanks to a new pushy manager wanting software out and people forgetting what I'd mentioned. At least I have teams evidence to back up that I pointed this out. by cass210 (Wed 8th Dec 2021 9:59am)
  • It's actually really minor in the grand scheme of things, basically the business wanted some new change out but I warned them a few days ago that a last minute enhancement to it meant it would be tied up with a story that I'd put through and thus would delay release as our team generally doesn't want untested code in production. A new manager didn't understand this, the developers who worked on the story forgot my warning and basically half my story got released into live without it passing QA process. Thankfully it wasn't a new feature or something which would have broken being half released but it was more the principle of it than anything else. by cass210 (Wed 8th Dec 2021 11:27am)
  • Just adding words on there but I think there is a move in our team to feature toggle everything so you can safely release untested code into production. It's crazy but I can see the logic by cass210 (Wed 8th Dec 2021 1:17pm)

  • Just to add, you can report SORN vehicles for being left on a road. I did this at my house because somebody had left a car there which was SORN, but they had parked it like a proper dick which meant it was causing a nuisance to all the neighbours. Not long after I reported it was gone. by cass210 (Tue 4th Jan 2022 10:15am)

  • Hi, my first degree was in social sciences and then I did the MSC IT at Glasgow University, which is a one year course. I did have some previous experience in IT from school so starting wasn't too bad but it did ramp up. I'm now 5 years into a software development career and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. When I did it you could get funding for the fees if you were Scottish which was very helpful. Afterwards I managed to get a job relatively easily. I know that CodeClan and that are a viable option but unfortunately some HR departments are quite strict on needing a degree. Hell one place even rejected me because I didn't have a 4 year degree in Computing Science. Feel free to PM if you have any questions by cass210 (Tue 25th Jan 2022 3:57pm)

  • Does anyone know where I can buy Coats and Moon/Moon thread in a shop in Glasgow? My sewing machine seems to hate Guttermann for some reason but that seems to be thread of choice for most sewing related shops in Glasgow or the wider area. I'm just about to hit my 30s but I feel far too young to shop in most of the fabric shops currently available in Glasgow (not been to Bawn, but that's because I live West and currently don't have a reason to visit the Southside much). by cass210 (Sat 12th Feb 2022 6:15pm)

I can't confirm if she's any good yet but I recently bought the analysis plus shop package from style man stylist on Instagram for my bf and I thought it was very good value considering I paid the same for just an analysis last year (can't recommend the one I had as I think they only do ladieswear but it's styled by Susie if you want to look them up) by cass210 (Sun 27th Feb 2022 9:16am)

I emailed them about a month ago to ask if they would do a curly cut for me and apparently I've been so busy I've not noticed that they didn't reply until now, their website seems to be more heavily focussed on curly/kinky hair, whilst I'm definitely in the 2b/c camp. The last update on their website is from 2015 and it's been that long since I went that I can't remember if the price for booking online is the same as the saver Tuesdays tickets (I remember them being £5-6 ish? December 2021 I got cited again, as they were doing automatic excusals for employees deemed essential by the government (I work in the civil service) I was excused with a photocopy of my letter from work. I moved house and thought it would get me a break but nope I was cited again in October just there, but had to get a fairly last minute excusal as I had a death in my family. Maybe one of these days I'll actually get picked. Out of everyone I know, I've been cited the most times and nobody else seems to get bothered. by cass210 (Thu 26th Jan 2023 8:58pm)

You can also report lampposts being out which seems to get them dealt with quickly. The council is shite but I guess they don't have eyes everywhere so for me reporting it means at least I know I've done something about it. In addition, anyone who gets their car injured would hopefully find out the council was aware of the issue. by cass210 (Fri 3rd Feb 2023 10:55am)
