  • The general attitude towards taking care of the city needs to be improved. Yes the council needs to improve cleaning services and bin collections, but we as residents need to take more pride in keeping it clean. Some cities I’ve visited abroad have people constantly on the road emptying bins and scrubbing the streets, even at night. But the rest of the community does their wee bit too. All the shop owners clean their shopfront and also scrub away both at morning and night. Never ever saw their bins or rubbish dumped at the shopfront. I noticed fewer bins in these cities yet hardly any litter, so the people must be taking extra care. Here, you tell someone who’s littered to throw their rubbish in the bin and they’ll yell, swear, fight or even threaten to hurt you. There’s this mindset of “I don’t care” or “someone else will pick it up”. by confused_mani (Thu 16th Jul 2020 7:45am)
  • I haven’t traveled much but Antalya and Istanbul in Turkey! The main tourist areas were clean and well maintained. Venturing further out, the cities can look a bit run down but not actually dirty. The hot weather is a bonus too. When I went to Rome 2 years ago it was average, neither filthy nor immaculate. But there’s a lot of complaints online of the city becoming dirtier. by confused_mani (Fri 17th Jul 2020 3:52pm)
  • Second this. A lot of henna artists are self-employed and work from home, rather than a salon. I’ll put a few names of them down below and you can check on Instagram. I do recommend you make sure they’re following proper hygiene guidelines too. • Second this: my brother (born and raised here) has never had an issue in Glasgow except the odd car dispute. He moved to London for work and was mugged twice and threatened to be stabbed within 5 months. One of the few perks of lockdown is him being back here, means less worry for his well-being. by confused_mani (Sun 24th Jan 2021 6:40pm)
  • Dini’s on Nithsdale Road is seriously underrated. Pizzas are under a tenner and are really light on the palate. Mozza’s doing £6 pizzas for all of January if you’re ever near Silverburn. by confused_mani (Fri 21st Jan 2022 2:44pm)
  • Loads of jobs with [Next](https://careers.next.co.uk/#en/sites/CX_3001/requisitions?location=Glasgow%2C+Lanarkshire%2C+United+Kingdom&locationId=300000019020455&locationLevel=city&mode=location&radius=25&radiusUnit=MI) at the moment - good luck by confused_mani (Sat 25th Jun 2022 5:38am)
  • You can park at the Quay for free (the side of the car park where Mecca is) and walk over the Tradeston bridge. It’s only a 10 minute walk to town. by confused_mani (Sat 25th Jun 2022 5:44am)
  • second the hygiene issue: my friend became seriously ill for a week after eating at Chaakoo by confused_mani (Sat 25th Jun 2022 5:48am)
  • A few months ago a schoolgirl did this at my work. Bless her, she looked so nervous. But for a lot of workplaces, CVs are a thing of the past and companies require online applications. She was told she’s welcome to apply online. by confused_mani (Sat 25th Jun 2022 5:54am)
  • What’s the best way to keep in the loop about upcoming gigs? I always find out by the time most tickets are sold out by confused_mani (Fri 1st Jul 2022 10:53pm)
  • If you ever do take the train to Edinburgh, do be wary of the ticket type. I went last week from Queen St (for the first time in a decade)and had to pay £26 for a return…what a pisstake Apparently if you go before 9am it costs that much. If you go after it’s about £14 by confused_mani (Fri 8th Jul 2022 12:14am)
  • Last year I took the train from Queen St to Balloch. Right outside Balloch station is a boat service. I think it’s called Sweeney’s. You can take 1 or 2 hour boat rides around the loch. I really recommend going for the 2 hour one- it takes you to Luss in the first hour. You can hop off at Luss Pier and take the next boat (do bear in mind the last boat timings) back to Balloch. Luss is very picturesque and has a couple of cafes and a beach to chill on. It’s small but perfect for a solo trip by confused_mani (Fri 8th Jul 2022 12:21am)
  • [University of Glasgow Library](https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/library/visitors/#applyforavisitorspass) has quiet rooms in the higher floors for secluded study/meetings. The lower floors allow quiet chat and they’re usually not that busy during the summer as most undergraduates are away. You can usually apply for a day visitor pass, however the website is saying that’s not an option due to Covid restrictions. It’s possible this is incorrect and they haven’t updated the website. It wouldn’t hurt for you to call the welcome desk and ask. If you do end up at GU library, double check you can access their wifi network Eduroam. You usually need a university email and password to access it. by confused_mani (Tue 12th Jul 2022 8:59pm)
  • Arran? Some of my school classmates would always spend their holidays at their summer homes there. Or Aviemore for skiing in the winter. I on the other hand barely left my neighbourhood… by confused_mani (Thu 14th Jul 2022 12:40am)
  • Worst culprits are those that eat takeaways in their car then chuck it out the window. I live in a pretty quiet, clean street but see the occasional dickhead do that by confused_mani (Sun 17th Jul 2022 5:52pm)
  • The bins on Buchanan Street are a riot. It’s embarrassing to think that a street which most tourists will visit has so many overflowing bins. Whenever there’s a slight wind, all the rubbish balancing on top of the bins ends up everywhere too by confused_mani (Sun 17th Jul 2022 6:09pm)
  • I’ve never really drank so the idea of having a lifestyle so focused on booze is foreign to me. When I go out, I’ll stick to tea/coffee in cafes, mocktails in bars. I’ve a major sweet tooth so dessert shops are a go to. For hobbies, I’m pretty boring. Reading, walks around the city and parks, museums (highly recommend the Burrell collection) and gym. The occasional badminton meet-up with a local group for more socialised sports. Day trips to areas in Scotland (love me a Loch) are a great to get out and enjoy yourself too. I used to volunteer to pass time but I don’t have that luxury anymore. It was great to meet people I normally wouldn’t see in my life & help the community. Picking up a hobby is a good shout too. It may be difficult adjusting to a new lifestyle but I reckon you’ll be fine by confused_mani (Mon 18th Jul 2022 12:07am)
  • So is their pasta! I’ll never understand why La vita next door gets more hype by confused_mani (Sat 23rd Jul 2022 7:21am)
  • I’ve a general question for everyone - How much is considered decent for 1:1 PT sessions, let’s say 2x a week? I’ve thought about doing 1:1 but money is a major obstacle atm. I did group sessions with Hannah Ross at Puregym Silverburn which I really enjoyed. It was affordable and helped a complete novice like myself get more confident. She’s stopped the group sessions for a wee while to focus on online coaching and 1:1 but does the odd group bootcamp. She does weekly check ins and really tailors the plans depending on the person, this sounds like what you’re looking for by confused_mani (Sat 23rd Jul 2022 8:57am)
  • Do you happen to have her social media handles? I can’t seem to find her by confused_mani (Sat 23rd Jul 2022 9:05am)
  • Sara Hair & Beauty is the sort of place I drive past and can instantly tell it’s a shitehole. I go to salons only a handful of times a year as well. With something like lash extensions, it’s sooo not worth risking an adverse reaction, or losing your original lashes. Like others have said, Shawlands and nearby have an abundance of salons that have nice people and do lashes well. I’ve never had extensions so I can’t personally recommend anything. But I hear Niche Brow Bar (just round the corner from Dominos Shawlands) are good. I totally get how you feel about not feeling like a girly girl; I can relate to some extent. But salons should be (and usually are) very welcoming and really don’t care if you have no makeup on. In fact, many people go without any makeup for treatments. So please don’t worry about any of that! If you think lash extensions may be a step too far (since you’ve never had them done before), lash lifts are also great! by confused_mani (Mon 1st Aug 2022 6:20pm)
  • What a site! I’ve heard that Frites (in Edinburgh) plan to open next to Central, but that may be a while. by confused_mani (Thu 4th Aug 2022 12:05pm)
  • It depends on what part of Glasgow you’re talking about. The city centre? Definitely agree with you - everytime I go to town I’m dying to leave. Shops are boring and close too early. If I want to buy things, it’s easier, convenient & cheaper for me to buy online and have it delivered to my home or collect nearby. The most recent new stores I’ve seen open in town are another souvenir shop and that American candy store which took over the old forbidden planet. Food & drink options are the main reason why people still go to town. Last few nice days I’ve noticed town has been far more…alive. But in general, there’s this unsafe feeling I sense in the centre. Outside central, four corners, st enoch square always have something going on. Lockdown has definitely worsened the situation. I’ve noticed parts of the Southside have actually been improving which is really promising. Take a look at Shawlands/Strathbungo. The area has been taken over with independent cafes, restaurants and some shops. Majority are thriving and are packed. Queens Park generally feels safer to go through compared to years ago & has become more popular to chill in. They’ve been doing free movie screenings & events which has attracted more folk too. Areas like west end are always buzzing too. I can’t comment much on other areas of Glasgow as I don’t visit them much. I think lockdown has had a massive role to play in this, but in a positive way. When everything was closed, people had to amuse themselves by going out for walks. No one would go out their way to visit town so would stick to their local areas. Even after restrictions eased, I’ve noticed people prefer to stick to these areas for day visits/nights out. Last night, I drove through Kilmarnock Rd & Pollokshaws Road and the area was packed. Not too long later I had to go through sauchiehall street and barely saw anyone. by confused_mani (Sun 7th Aug 2022 6:37am)
  • Cheers man, I’m hoping I’m magically cured by Tuesday lol. I hope you’re much better too by confused_mani (Fri 15th Sep 2023 11:54am)
  • If you’re being reimbursed, take the train to Edinburgh. It’s pretty common for Southsiders to do it. Driving is an absolute nightmare unless you leave very very early. I’ve noticed accidents tend to happen in rush hour and lead to complete standstills too. Train isn’t perfect - I’ve only been commuting for 1 week and have already faced some issues. But if it’s only for a couple weeks it shouldn’t be too bad for you. Totally recommend you apply now for a ScotRail railcard - you can buy flexipasses, load it onto the card and it makes your overall journeys a bit cheaper. Then take the bus to Edinburgh Zoo or wherever is nearest for you. I suggest having a look at which bus is most convenient from Waverley or Haymarket. Got this from the Zoo’s website: The following Lothian services pass the zoo every few minutes: Service 12: Seafield – Leith – Princes Street –Haymarket – Zoo – Gyle Centre Service 26 : Seton Sands/Tranent – Portobello – City Centre – Zoo – Clerwood Service 31 : Bonnyrigg – City Centre – Zoo – East Craigs by confused_mani (Fri 15th Sep 2023 11:50am)

  • My dad is an anti-vaxxer. He has zero vaccinations. He got Covid last year and last week. My brother got both vaccines and he’s never had Covid. You were saying? by confused_mani (Fri 15th Sep 2023 10:56pm)
  • I was in the same boat as you a few years ago, seemed as if everyone was advertising for part-time jobs (ideal for students) yet I was never short-listed. I gave up, tried when I was 21 and got a couple. I went for jobs that didn’t ask for CVs, that asked for more general info as I had no work experience at the time. Silverburn are doing a [recruitment day](https://www.shopsilverburn.com/news/job-fair/) next week I think. I’ve seen it before; you can actually meet the managers f2f, directly give them your details and they’ll contact you. Word of mouth is a great way to get hired. When I worked in retail, managers would sometimes ask us if any friends/family want jobs. by confused_mani (Thu 28th Sep 2023 12:16pm)
  • Sentry Box! I went to primary school not too far and would always pop in for toys, I loved the traditional types they’d do. It’s now Koko House and they’ve kept some of the artwork from Sentry Box which is nice by confused_mani (Sat 7th Oct 2023 9:26pm)
  • More of a cafe but Grassroots at Charing Cross, they closed [during the 2009 recession](https://www.heraldscotland.com/default_content/12384743.dwindling-trade-forces-grassroots-cafe-close/). I’m not vegetarian but loved their veggie burgers. Also a toy shop on Nithsdale Road, no clue what the name was but they sold traditional toys that younger me loved; it’s currently Dini’s. by confused_mani (Sat 7th Oct 2023 9:31pm)
  • I was just thinking about this. I had Covid exactly 1 month ago for a week. Today, I’ve become unwell again with a runny, a blocked nose, constant sneezing and a sore head. Could not stop sneezing at work and had the worst brain fog. I probably need more vitamin D and sleep, and less stress which is easier said than done. I was considering booking a flu jab soon, but honestly a bit fed up with the constant injections. by confused_mani (Thu 12th Oct 2023 11:18pm)
  • Only Czech cuisine I can think of here is Zinfandel, but it seems to be more Scottish fusion. by confused_mani (Sun 5th Nov 2023 5:59pm)
  • I suppose you could hop into a car and drive without a license anywhere in the UK, not just in Glasgow. But that means you’re not legally labelled “safe” to be on the roads, and you have no insurance. People of all races do it, being a dick who thinks they’re entitled to drive without a license isn’t exclusive to a particular background. But some Pakistanis have this “I can do whatever I want & get away with it” mentality that gets a pass in Pakistan. (Source: I’m Scottish Pakistani, see it all the time when I’m at the homeland). I see in your post history you failed your test recently, that’s a shame. But please don’t think you can jump behind the wheel anyway. by confused_mani (Thu 30th Nov 2023 6:22pm)
  • It’s not stupid, it’s necessarily strict to ensure no one crashes and dies. Definitely can be a pain if you’re struggling to pass or have driving anxiety (which I used to have). Pakistani driving tests are too lax, that’s why it’s so easy to obtain one. Last I checked, the practical involves driving around an empty ground, going through narrow lanes lined by cones [like this](https://youtu.be/6JO2SPKcNAE?si=u-eXMdWkgTKbiCl8). But I will say, it does take skill to drive in the mobbed streets of cities like Lahore. by confused_mani (Thu 30th Nov 2023 8:27pm)
