Good quality and cheap for winter stuff: Decathlon, Debenhams, TK Maxx (I bought a winter coat here for £90 that has lasted me 6 winters, still going strong), JD sports maybe? Bad quality and cheap: Primark, New Look (though I did get a good pair of boots here) Good quality and expensive: Tiso, Greaves (for sports jackets etc), Marks and Spencer, House of Fraser for more fashionable stuff. Year round I wear a windbreaker from Trespass or a leather jacket and a pair of water-tight low cut boots, in winter I wear Doc Martins and a heavy full-length waterproof down coat (it changed my life) from TK Maxx.

I cycled to work in London down the cycle superhighways and always felt safe. There was one dodgy right-hand turn but other than that the provisions they have in place are actually really good. I cycled once in Glasgow from West End to South Side and have never felt less safe on a bike than when I went down Pollockshaws Road. I look forward to there being proper infrastructure in place soon so cycling will become a viable commuting option.

(Mon 27th May 2019 11:05pm)
You are suggesting one of the most efficient and healthy means of public transport available to us should be limited to what you clearly think it is, a recreational sport reserved for parks. This is exactly the attitude that causes arrogant drivers to play games with the lives of cyclists. So aye, fuck off.
by
everybodyctfd
(Tue 28th May 2019 10:10am)
I completely agree! It would be so good to duck about town on a bike. I've lived in 3 other cities where the infrastructure was in place and it was actually the quickest way to get anywhere (especially in London). I just don't feel safe and get confused in Glasgow as the infrastructure and signposting isn't there for cyclists to know where they should be.

I work for a charity and need to 'cheerlead' at London Marathon every year. Two tips: 1. Just wear what is comfortable and make sure your nipples won't chafe 2. **Put your name on your shirt** this means people will shout support at you, I've heard it really boosts morale. Good luck!

Maybe try asking the synagogues? I'm sure they have plenty of classes or will know where to start. I grew up around this one [http://www.giffnockshul.co.uk/](http://www.giffnockshul.co.uk/) and know for a fact there is a large presence of Hebrew speakers as they shopped in the supermarket I used to work in. Good luck, I'm trying to learn Levantine Arabic and the alphabet is hard enough.
by
everybodyctfd
(Mon 4th Nov 2019 10:53am)
I'd wager the proportion of Hebrew speakers in the Ibrox area is as high as the number of Palestinian flags flown there.
by
everybodyctfd
(Mon 4th Nov 2019 10:55am)
Why learn any language? To learn about a new culture, to be able to converse with other speakers, for the joy of studying language which is interesting in itself.
by

(Tue 5th Nov 2019 6:37am)
And to keep it balanced, I would wager the number of people flying Palestinian flags near Parkhead who can speak Arabic is equally as low.

I'd say hire a van if you drive or get the train if you don't, I always opt for the train when going from London and back and did the same move each way on the train (in 2016 and again in 2018, admittedly on the way back up to Glasgow my boyfriend drove the majority of our stuff up by van). Welcome to Glasgow! I hope you enjoy it here :)

They are still there, I walk the loop everyday. The best time to see them is early morning and they are normally in the fields flanking the main road in. Unfortunately those fields are big so it is just luck how close you get. There were tons last year and only a few this year, not sure why.

I recently discovered Cathcart Cemetry. It is very overgrown in the old section and a community page on Facebook has begun recently doing it up and mapping out all the historically significant graves and designs. Plus an incredible view over the city and mountains. The new side is still beautiful as well and contains a Jewish cemetry, Christian cemetry and Islam cemetry. There were some sombering graves in the Jewish section dating from holocaust survivors who wanted to remember those who didnt make it to refuge. Highly recommend a wander.

Thank you for signing up! That is really appreciated! So far I have emailed and Facebook messaged 100 vets and 20 dog walking groups/dog breed groups in Scotland. Pollok Park is in the Southside. If you want to get public transport there you can get off at Pollokshaws West and turn left (is it left? my direction is confused...) as you come out the station it is about a 30 sec walk from there. You can also cycle there from the West End on bike paths the whole way. It is a truly gorgeous park I'm lucky enough to live near to and has been my escape all through lockdown. There is an estate house which has beautifully kept gardens and is open to the public (which is behind where this photo was taken), a big wooded area, lots of Highland Coos, a riverside walk, mountain bike tracks etc.

I dont have much to suggest specifically but will say that we are quite a friendly city and have great communities to get involved with. Like any person trying to make friends as an adult it may be tougher but there are clubs for just about everything in Glasgow so maybe focus on things you are interested in and take it from there? Do you have any more specific questions?

I actually have a specific suggestion if you like hiking, there is a really friendly walking group on Facebook called Scottish Womens Walking Group. I think there are a few specific ones per region. I've never gone on their organised walks but they are always very friendly and keen to have new people join in from what I can see.

First off as a proud Glasweigian - fuck you but also I completely agree. I've lived all over and Glasgow is fucking disgusting in comparison to anywhere else I've been. I think there are three main factors at play here: 1. City council not employing enough staff/the general corruption and lack of funding of council 2. Bins and birds. The public bin design in Glasgow allows birds in to pick shit out which gets blown around before anyone can do anything 3. Bad attitudes. The broken window affect described below is definitely a thing. Culturally shit attitudes and individualism means Glaswegians are not taking care of the city like they could/should.
by
everybodyctfd
(Sun 8th Aug 2021 4:25pm)
I honestly think a lot of it in urban areas is to do with shit bin design + bins not being emptied enough.

(Sun 8th Aug 2021 5:22pm)
Yup. The guy treats his staff terribly. Poor pay, sleazy, kept tips, didnt pay people for weeks whilst he went on a jolly to Las Vegas. Apparently bad health and safety record too. I know a lot of people who work in hospitality in Glasgow and some that worked directly for him. He is not popular at all.

by
everybodyctfd
(Sun 8th Aug 2021 10:39pm)
GCC are paid to pick up litter so they should but the problem more begins with the bins overflowing or being pulled out of by birds then blown everywhere. I agree there should be bigger fines for litter droppers but GCC is also chronically underfunded.
by
everybodyctfd
(Mon 9th Aug 2021 7:52am)
Yeah the deposit schemes are class and less plastic generally. Munich where I go often is just generally a v judgy city though and you would get called out for littering/people dont do it generally except maybe ar Oktoberfest. One of my absolute pet peeves just now is seeing big groups off picnickers just leave their shit as they leave the park. The audacity
by
everybodyctfd
(Mon 9th Aug 2021 7:50am)
I mean that is ridiculous. It is a sanitation issue more than anything, of course they should be taking responsibility for the litter issue, but so should citizens.
by
everybodyctfd
(Mon 9th Aug 2021 9:35am)
Aye but if litter isn't emptied and bins are designed shit we have no chance. Literally everywhere else I've lived (London, Lyon, Brisbane, Munich) have had street cleaners out most mornings.

(Tue 4th Jan 2022 10:22am)
I think the fruit and veggies are a little more expensive from Locavore/Stalks and Stems compared to a regular supermarket but Locavore in particular grow a lot of it near Glasgow/source it ethically/environmentally and it is therefore paying a bit more for that I think. I think the shampoos and that are maybe slightly pricier than supermarket but nothing that has caused me concern just yet. It's all the Faith in Nature brand for the shampoos/body wash etc so it is paraben and other toxins free too which is nice and I'm happy to pay a bit more for. The oats/pulses/pasta etc are the same or cheaper as what you would get in a supermarket, no branding and really cheap. We had to learn how to rehydrate the pulses properly and now are obsessed with properly cooked chickpeas ([https://youtu.be/WfyuEdW5vTg](https://youtu.be/WfyuEdW5vTg)). The museli is expensive AF (like £8 for a box of cereal size) but delicious and I only use a wee bit as a porridge topper. The olive oil is definitely more expensive too. The bread and eggs are more expensive - but the eggs are from a nice co-op farm down the road in Ayrshire and the bread is made locally and is proper sourdough. We tend to spend about £20-30 a shop once every ten days or so but we don't always need to top up stuff because we buy in big jars from Ikea. I spoke with the lovely woman who runs Neighbourhood and she said she tries to keep the staples roughly the same price as supermarkets where she can but she upsells loads of nice gifts and other products. It's a lovely space.

Starting from the Lighthouse viewpoint in town there 3 walks I typically take tourists or people new to the city on which may give him a lot to see of Glasgow are: \- one East through Merchanct City and Merchant Square to the Cathedral and around the Necropolis then down to Glasgow Green with a stop at West Brewery for a beer \- one West through down Great Western Road and down Byres Road, up to Glasgow Uni then through Kelvin Grove to Finniston for a beer somewhere \- one South (though the walk South can be a bit meh unless you go from further up the river), down Vicky Road, round Queens Park, down through Shawlands to Pollok park (the specific best loop I like is down past the Granary, past the cricket club, down by the river, through the house gardens and then up through the forest and back up to Pollokshaws Road through via Crossmyloof, end with a pint at Phillies A great cycle to experience is down the river and up to Loch Lomond via the canals, probably my fave thing to do of a weekend.

yeah I really like the walk from the Cathedral back through the Strathclyde campus to town. You can stay off the main roads almost the whole way, the best bit is the little area with the stream running through it (I went to Glasgow Uni so don't know what any of the Strathclyde buildings are called)

Why not go to Pollok Park and see some highland cows, the house gardens and riverside walk, then visit the house and take a tour and eat some lunch in the cafe, then wander over to the Burrell Collection (in the same park) which has just reopened and full of art and historical artifacts. You can walk to the park from Pollokshaws West train station and you can also visit Shawlands by a 20 minute walk up the road - there are plenty of cafes and restaurants there for dinner, as well as another lovely park. If you are staying West you can do the Botanics, then the riverside walk to Kelvingrove Park, Kelvingrove Art Gallery, tour the University (lovely architecture), visit the Hunterian, the Riverside Museum etc. There are plenty of places to eat there too. My vote is for Bar Soba because their Thai Lemonade mocktail is so delicious I chose it over alcohol every time I go. Another nice thing could be a day in the town centre, visit the Lighthouse Museum, walk to the top for a Charles Rennie Mackintosh exhibition, then the view point of the city, do a walking tour of the murals and experience the Georgian architecture of the City Centre, visit the GOMA, walk to the Glasgow Catherdral, go to the Necropolis, visit the People's Palace and Glasgow Green. Have afternoon tea in the Willow Tea Rooms (which is Charles Rennie Mackintosh inspired so very 'Glasweigian' by nature.

First time I properly cycled in Glasgow (other than when I was wee about my local street) was an attempt to go from the West End to the Southside about 8 years ago. I couldn't figure out where the cycle paths were for the most part and at one particuarly busy section it had the blue sign for shared use and I was cycling slowly over to the Jamaica street bridge. I got accosted by two drunk junkies and yelled at then had to cycle on the main road down Pollokshaws Road avoiding buses and cars and everything else that mental bit brings. I genuinely thought I might die. I will say it is sloooooow progress but Glasgow generally is much better these days - the dedicated cycle lanes and shared use streets are quite widespread in certain parts of town. I reguarly cycle from the Southside to the West End and out to Loch Lomond on a weekend and barely need to be on the road. Attitudes are slightly better too but there is definitely work to be done there (I felt more safe in London cycling than I've ever done in Glasgow, motorists here still are weird about sharing the road).

Definitely worse than London and any other major city I've cycled in. Glasgow drivers have in general way less patience or awareness. I rarely cycle on roads here and everytine there are cars up my arse aggressively close.

It's my own personal observation but Glasgow drivers compare terribly to drivers in the three other cities I've lived in (inc London). They are from my experience generally more aggressive and less patient. I'm not saying all drivers are bad, like everywhere else the majority are great but I've had more aggression here than anywhere else.

I much much prefer the train, and I think it works out at almost the same amount of time (especially if you are planning a day to see London?). I've gotten the train many times, I've never struggled to get my luggage in a space, other than one time my train was cancelled and I had to get on the next one so 2 trains in one, had to sit on my luggage in the bit between compartments, it was fine. To be honest, I recently have begun buying the Premium Economy tickets, I highly recommend it. It's normally £25 extra so a bit more to pay per ticket (this is returns). You get first class space but with none of the bits I wasn't bothered anyway (like the meal service). The carriages are normally half empty.

Here are some, you have plenty time, as a serial procrasitnator (like right now), I know you can leave stuff to the last minute and get it done. 4-5 hours is quite a long time mind you, and I don't know what she knows about the area? Some nice landmarks easily walkable from the city centre. 1. Central Station 2. The Lighthouse (stop for a drink at Soba or Tabac 3. Buchanan Street 4. The Duke of Wellington Statue 5. The City Chambers/George Square 6. The little crocodile in Merchant Square (stop for a drink) 7. The Murals down that way (the ones of woodland creatures) 8. The Cathedral 9. The Necropolis (spooky but fun place to propose...) 10. The Barra Market 11. The Barrowlands 12. West Brewery (stop for a pint and a pretzel) 13. The People's Palace 14. The Clydeside: Riverside walk from Glasgow Green to Hydro area (this is a long walk fyi) 15. The Squinty Bridge 16. The Science Centre 17. The Hydro 18. The Riverside Museum 19. Kelvingrove Art Gallery 20. Glasgow Uni Cloisters (also cute place to propose) 21. Riverside walk from Kelvingrove Park to Botanics 22. Botanic Gardens 23. Oran Mor (stop for a drink) 24. Ashton Lane (dinner and drinks) PS this would take ages

You could also turn it around, so start from the West End and go East or vice versa: 1. Brunch in West End near Botanics (so on Byres Road Ideally) 2. Botanic Gardens 3. Riverside walk from Botanics to Kelvingrove Park 4. Glasgow Uni Cloisters 5. Kelvingrove Art Gallery 6. The Science Centre 7. The Hydro 8. The Riverside Museum 9. The Squinty Bridge 10. Riverside walk to town from the museums bit 11. St Enoch's Subway stop (stop for a drink at Hootenanays) 12. Central Station 13. The Lighthouse (stop for a drink at Soba or Tabac) 14. Buchanan Street 15. The Duke of Wellington Statue 16. The City Chambers/George Square 17. The little crocodile in Merchant Square (stop for a drink) 18. The Barra Market 19. The Barrowlands 20. Cons: Things are pretty grim. Prices are rising, politics are crap, rented accomodation is difficult to come by (I hear). Scotland until at least mid March is dark and depressing weather wise. Pros: Glasgow Uni is fun and will give you good connections, we make the most of a shit situation by having quite a lot to do (clubbing/music/nightlife etc), very gay friendly too. It's a fun opportunity you may not get again, even in the rain Scotland is quite pretty. All in I'd go for it unless you absolutely can't afford it. I loved my year abroad at uni.

It's for 3 hours of bus use. £1.50 for 3 hours, as opposed to whatever shite they charge here. And there is half your answer. When I lived in London I commuted by bike down Blackfriars road and felt safe the whole time - I hate cycling in Glasgow because cars are dicks and always up my arse. Lots of reasons why people drive (I don't but trying to learn). Deregulation of/shite public transport is the main one.

Nonna Said was so bad when I went. Like, I was pissed for ages after that I'd wasted money/a meal there. It is so so stogey and gross. If you want everything oily and deep fried (which I get, some people do), then it is worth trying, but I honestly couldn't think of anything worse. Paesano is decent, as is 800 degrees in the Southside. I also like Piatto on Skirving Street, their pizza slices are consistently nice. Nothing fancy but at least not doused in cheese and they have a decent crust/toppings ratio.

Hello, I did Erasmus when I did law and also had friends doing Erasmus in Glasgow. This was 10 years ago mind you. 1. Glasgow is famous for its nightlife and it takes many forms. You wont struggle to find a bar/club/gig that meets your tastes 2. The University of Glasgow is a well thought of law school. It's a bit traditional as most older UK unis are. I still do some contract work for the Law School and the teaching staff that I interact with are really great and have cool research interests. You could always check out their uni blog if you wanted to learn more. I can't say much for the standards of teaching compared to what you get in Spain but I'd wager it is very similar. I found studying law in French harder than in English (obviously) but the Erasmus expectations are different than at home (most exams were taken orally for example instead of written), I don't know if this is the case with Erasmus intakes into Glasgow but it is something I'm sure you can check. [https://www.uofgschooloflaw.com/](https://www.uofgschooloflaw.com/) 3. Not all of the Highlands is accessible by train but plenty of it is. You can also book tours for quite cheap leaving from Glasgow and dropping you back off. There are lots of websites dedicated to detailing trips you can take with public transport from Glasgow. Here is an example, there are likely better than this one but it is from Trainline so they even show you which tickets to book... [https://www.thetrainline.com/via/europe/uk/scotland/glasgow/day-trips-from-glasgow](https://www.thetrainline.com/via/europe/uk/scotland/glasgow/day-trips-from-glasgow) I hope you have fun here if you decide to come :)

Exactly this. The Chinese state is a well known risk to British security. The fact they, an incredibly powerful military, would invade using bikes is the satire/what makes it funny. It's a political joke. The actual Chinese people are not being made fun of here. If the joke was 'well the Chinese drivers of the city would be safer on bikes'. That would be racist. And also a shit joke.

Copy paste from a similar q SOUTH: Go to Pollok Park and see some highland cows, the house gardens and riverside walk, then visit the house or the Burrell Collection (in the same park) which has just reopened and full of art and historical artifact and has a nice cafe. You can walk to the park from Pollokshaws West train station and you can also visit Shawlands by a 20 minute walk up the road - there are plenty of cafes and restaurants there for dinner, as well as another lovely park. It is also where the Battle of Langside took place which is interesting history (a lot of the names of places are based on this). I like Gizzis coffee for food/coffee, and Phillies for pints and bao buns. WEST: Enjoy the Botanics, then the riverside walk to Kelvingrove Park, Kelvingrove Art Gallery, tour the University (lovely architecture), visit the Hunterian, the Riverside Museum etc. West End is probs best for restaurants too - Stravagin or the Bothy for Scottish food, Bar Brett, Crabshakk, Ox and Finch are all good but pricier places for good food. I also like Sylvan in Charing Cross all veggie but really good as well as Hug and Pint. Tchai Ovna is also a fun wee tea shop down Otago Lane but I've heard some mixed reviews recently. CENTRE: Do a walking tour of the murals and experience the Georgian architecture of the City Centre and the shopping available, visit the GOMA, and have afternoon tea in the Willow Tea Rooms (which is Charles Rennie Mackintosh inspired, so very 'Glaswegian' by nature). Walk to the Glasgow Cathedral, go to the Necropolis, visit the People's Palace and Glasgow Green, and have a beer and good food at West or Drygate breweries. Merchant City is in this area too with loads of restaurants and bars including that gaming one mentioned in another comment as well as a bunch of vintage shops, the Barra Market (quirky and very longstanding classic covered market with a very wide range of shops) and infamous Barrowland Ballroom is also near near. Alternatively do a hop on hop off bus tour and you can take in some of the sights above in the Centre and West End. One more thing - Loch Lomond is really accessible by train or by a bike route that is entirely off road (you can get a train back). Could visit the Balloch Country Park and see the castle there then go to the Balloch village/the Shores for food and/or kayaking.

+1 for stir fry as an easy intro to cooking option. Coop do one which is £6 for greens (delish super green option), protein, carb and sauce. Serves 2 so could do you two meals. To cook stir fry you'll need a fry pan and oil (just a wee bit). Add the oil and cook the protein up ona high heat whilst stirring so it is ready (e.g. with chicken, not pink in the middle), then add the veggies and cook with a couple of minutes, then the carbs and finally the sauce. It should take under 10 mins. I like adding some crunchy peanut butter to mine.

You could try meal prepping? Spend 40 mins cooking but have healthy food ready to go for 4-5 days? Defs the cheapest option but I appreciate may be daunting first time. I'm happy to give some pointers if helpful the sort of things we prepare are soups, pasta bakes, bean chillies, tortilla fillings etc. All with tons of veg and no meat so pretty cheap. I'm 32, I've struggled with this my whole 20s. I think exercising as a woman is tough in Glasgow. Here are some things I enjoy: \- **PureGym/cheap gym** nearby your house so you'll go - cardio + weightlifting. Get a PT for one or two sessions to get your technique right. I don't use the scary back bit but I do like do use the freeweight section, especially the tires and the pulling thing. I also like to follow Nike app (which is free)'s workouts. I have a pal to go with most mornings and it is holding me accountable but actually its nice to go on my own and stick a podcast in and get to it. They also do classes, I liked the Strength one. I've done Spin a lot in the past too and enjoy it. \- Join a **BootCamp**, tend to be mostly women and you get a great work out. I stopped going because I don't have a car and it was quite expensive/not safe to come into the park at night. But I LOVED it when I went. \- **Yoga** \- Go to a class. Also full of women normally (and way more men than when I started 10 years ago which is nice). I really only like Hot Yoga but it is expensive and not to everyone's taste. There are plenty of options \- **Rock Climbin**g - I'm terrified of heights but for a while a few years ago I got really into rock climbing. It's like a puzzle and a work out and I found it so much fun when I wasn't shitting myself. \- There are loads of **sports clubs** for women, my pal joined a football team in Denniston that she loves. I don't love team sports (probably trauma from having to do PE and being a self-conscious teen!), but there are a ton of options \- **Swimming** \- there aren't a lot of pools but if you can find one near you its a great workout \- **Cycling** \- the city is opening up more and more these days and there are lots of lovely easy cycles you can do. I love the cycle to Loch Lomond though it is longer than I always think it is for someone like me who is quite unfit. All flat though, and you can even add a kayak in the Loch to the end of your cycle (and get the train back!). This is a perfect summer day out for me.

They got absolutely shafted for introducing a points based system for receiving tips https://twitter.com/FairHospitality/status/1668260637347045379?s=20 and generally being a dick to their employees. I personally walked passed and saw the manager screaming at a chef in the middle of the street in front of all the customers in the most condescending way possible.

I have legit been sick since July 13th. Started with a virus and gave me vertigo where I couldn't walk about for four weeks. Was finally getting over it and then caught another virus which gave me a fever. This has been a shite summer.

If you're willing to travel I really enjoyed Doune. There is a red kite photography area at a farm there and a beautiful walk down the river where I saw some red squirrels for the first time I think ever in Glasgow. My boyfriend also has seen pine martens up near Balloch before I think.

Fuck sake, that sounds awful. Yeah I have a lot of pals in hospo and a lot of places I wouldn't set foot in. Bungo is just easy and does a decent vegan menu which I liked as my da is vegan and it keeps dinners easy. Will have to find somewhere else now, sorry they were so shit. Edit: Any recommendations of somewhere similar with good management in the southside?

The main one was Six by Nico, he treated his staff appallingly and they had serious health and safety concerns too. There is also a cafe in the southside called Godshot which is run by a pervy guy who my pal used to work for that I fully avoid. I'm sure there are more but those are the main ones.

Any where from Pollokshields to Cathcart would fit your needs currently: look for Pollokshields, Strathbungo, Shawlands, Cathcart, Mount Florida, Battlefield areas. If you want a bit further out then Clarkston/Muriend/Giffnock are still walkable to nice bars and have parks but are more suburban family areas. There are obviously way more areas to live in but that's a general guide.

Yeah my partner goes the opposite way out of town to Balloch most days and its easy as its against the grain of traffic. You'd be fine commuting to Kilmarnock from anywhere on that list, moreso ones closer to the motorway. Could also try Bellahouston, Pollok, Dumbrek areas.

You've unlocked a childhood memory. This used to to be my most anticipated event each year. Think my pals got bikes for 50p once. I remember going with like 3 quid maybe and coming home with a massive bag full of toys. What is it like for adults? I can't even remember what the non kids stalls are ha.

I've sent pictures to every protest I've attended in the last few weeks to friends in Gaza as well as compilations of similar protests around the world. I can tell you they do appreciate it. They feel like they've been left to die so any solidarity and effort to share their voices is seen and is appreciated.
