  • It’s just that when what you’re reporting (numbers of injured) appear wrong (compared to reputable sources)...the 2nd half of your comment (the motive) suggest that you have some background motive for spreading what appears to be lies...just my two cents on why I found your comment unhelpful by gapyearwellspent (Fri 26th Jun 2020 4:09pm)
  • How about props that they were able to get control of the situation, shame someone had to die by gapyearwellspent (Fri 26th Jun 2020 4:12pm)
  • Nah I don't accept that. If your business is to be a rental company, you know that you're the one we deal with as tenants. Like any business you can choose not to take on clients that refuse to do reasonable work, making your company look bad. If you don't you deserve any bad reviews you get. by gapyearwellspent (Wed 1st Jul 2020 6:23pm)

  • So would it be your interpretation that people living around here just don't care what their street looks like, or are people driving from other parts of the city and dropping it here knowing that it apparently doesn't get investigated/penalised? by gapyearwellspent (Sun 10th Jan 2021 4:45pm)

  • [mail boxes etc](https://www.mbe.co.uk/glasgowbyresroad) on byres road I think by gapyearwellspent (Thu 4th Feb 2021 1:56pm)
  • I am with Westgate (Byres road) and wouldn’t recommend them. Anytime things need fixing it requires lots of following up on my side, and every time they pick up the phone and realise it isn’t an inquiry where they will make money but actually do the management, their tone just changes to annoyed and it makes you feel like you ruined their day simply for having the audacity to have something break by gapyearwellspent (Thu 4th Feb 2021 6:23pm)
  • I also see this at the Partick collection point all the time. The thing is, by being so inefficient inn their collection they make it all so much harder. If they empty the bins before they are full and all the bottles are on the street it's fairly straight forward, the car picks up the bin and empties it...takes a few minutes. Now, they send a guy who has to manually collect all the stuff from the ground and throw it inn the truck, taking at-least 30 minutes. by gapyearwellspent (Tue 16th Feb 2021 1:34pm)
  • Not knowing any of the particulars of this scheme, is it always all that bad? Like yes the individual bottle is made of much more plastic, but when more than 90% of bottles get recycled, does that not reduce the overall consumption over time? by gapyearwellspent (Tue 16th Feb 2021 1:40pm)
  • >I think the problem a are complex social issues surrounding funding Do you, in essence, mean how the council area of the city doesn't include the suburbs resulting in a situation where all the services that needs funding by the city get paid by a smaller population than those that utilise said services? Because...isn't that the case all over the UK? The rubbish collection seams objectively worse here than what I have seen other places in the UK. by gapyearwellspent (Tue 16th Feb 2021 1:50pm)
  • Think it depends massively on the size of your course. If your course is made up of 10 students, yeah, the marker will have a relationship to the student number, if you're in a cohort of 50+, no one has the capacity to keep track of the different number (hell, we only learn the names of maybe 1-2 people per tutorial/seminar/lecture) by gapyearwellspent (Thu 18th Feb 2021 11:37am)
  • Not saying that it isn't a friendly city, but I am so tired of these awards where the methodology is: "we will ask our totally non-representative sample of people that already follow us on social media"... I have never heard of Rough Guides, but seeing as they are headquartered in London, its not exactly surprising that Glasgow will do better than cities that are abroad (some even on different continents) since people will be more likely to have visited, and more likely have heard it described as the friendliest and stabbiest... Its exactly like when Dennistoun was chosen as one of the coolest neighbourhood in the world (which I suppose is entirely subjective)...but like common? You're telling me Dennistoun is cooler than parts of Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, London or Prague (just to throw some places I have spent time and subjectively think of as "cooler")? by gapyearwellspent (Thu 18th Feb 2021 2:28pm)
  • Don't get me wrong, I am not commenting on whether the guide is good or not, I am just saying that a travel guide written in English and published in the UK won't give you a representative sample of world opinion. by gapyearwellspent (Thu 18th Feb 2021 2:36pm)
  • Haha fair enough, maybe it goes to illustrate my point though as I am not from the UK...so possibly it's well known here but not abroad? by gapyearwellspent (Thu 18th Feb 2021 2:46pm)
  • Is it a silly argument, maybe... Yes I agree that the sample will likely have travelled more than the average person. Sort of disagree that it will give a "broad (and entirely valid) answer as it's a community of people that actively travel" What it will do is give the opinion of a select group of people who are very likely to be British and therefore will be more likely to have experience with some places rather than other, and who will also likely experience English speaking places (since brittish people aren't exactly known for knowing foreign languages) as more friendly as they will be able to interact with the locals. by gapyearwellspent (Thu 18th Feb 2021 3:15pm)
  • Can someone more clued up on Scottish politicians give me their opinion of Anwar? I can't quite put my finger on why, but since I briefly familiarised myself with him when he was running for Rector, he always seamed liked a massive opportunist ([For example, upon being elected to Rector he didn't really engage with the role](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/glasgow-rector-aamer-anwar-s-broken-promises-8v72hv0pv?--xx-meta=denied_for_visit%3D0%26visit_number%3D0%26visit_remaining%3D0%26visit_used%3D0&--xx-mvt-opted-out=false&--xx-uuid=1aca7d2a373bc94cf7965a68a0efbad3&fbclid=IwAR34H3Y30Mp7FwLOdUDxq5i4t3DoSj5T3LTzPT5tQr1bJOzY0zjvAK1mjuo&ni-statuscode=acsaz-307), just seemed to be happy to have the title). Him getting involved here just seems to be yet another example. But like I said I am far from familiar with most Scottish politicians, so would be happy to be proven wrong. by gapyearwellspent (Fri 14th May 2021 3:35pm)
  • I have tipped my barber once to make up for lost earnings since he couldn't cut my hair during lockdown. Other than that never. Sort of think tipping is vulgar as a concept and I am against normalising it as a thing to more industries. If my barber wants to raise prices that's fine, but don't expect me to pay more than what you're charging. by gapyearwellspent (Tue 1st Jun 2021 2:00pm)
  • Meh...I think its a bit of a mix... People here do seem to sometimes exaggerate how bad it is...but all the same I have lived in a fair few countries and UK cities and I don't think Glasgow is a good performer either. Like you say, litter is an issue, but I also feel like there is more of an issue with run-down and forgotten buildings, drunks and in-general not very healthy looking people...which while it doesn't necessarily perfectly correlate with safety might create a sense of danger...whether reasonable or not. Finally, while I don't have any strong data to back this up...it seams based on observation that in my international bubble I have yet to meet anyone post lockdown who actually want to settle here...people are here for jobs or studies, but it seams we all intend to move somewhere else once finished... by gapyearwellspent (Mon 6th Sep 2021 1:02pm)
  • Sounds like are probably in different groups then, would be very interesting to know if it's predominantly moving back, or moving from for example ayrshire vs the RUK or internationals. But all the same, I am happy if I am wrong as I wish the city only the best and an influx of new residents (particularly to the centre) seems sorely needed. by gapyearwellspent (Mon 6th Sep 2021 1:17pm)

  • Not to be hearthless...but are you telling me you're getting enough benefits to rent a house for 1K a month, while the full time students only get [7750 a year max](https://www.saas.gov.uk/full-time/funding-information-undergraduate) (most of which is a loan)? Jesus I hate paying my tax with priorities like this. by gapyearwellspent (Sat 22nd Jan 2022 3:30pm)
  • Wish we could just have a plain anti-war protest rather than having to pick a side. And no, I am not trying to excuse Russias aggression, or to be some sort of kremlin apologist, I am just worried about the ramifications of what all this support can ultimately result in. Being anti-war is a neutral statement, being pro-ukraine is not. Is there a real chance Ukraine will win the war? Because if there isn't, the more support we give, militarily or otherwise, we are just prolonging suffering, death and destruction on both sides. by gapyearwellspent (Thu 3rd Mar 2022 12:22pm)
  • I appreciate your comment, and maybe I am naive or defeatist...but I just want the suffering on both sides to stop. Also, it seams a bit disingenuous to draw the comparison to the holocaust. Putin, as far as I can tell, is not engaging in ethnic clenching or following a rethoric of ethno-nationalism. A better comparison would perhaps have been the appeasement with regards to the Sudetenland in the lead up to WW2. And yes, I am fully aware of how that appeasement approach worked out, and recognise it as a valid argument against my position. All the same, it seams that the outcome of this war is going to be a Russian victory one way or another, the main difference being the cost to (primarily) the Ukranian civilian population, and belligerents on both sides. The only positive outcome is some sort of peace, preferably sooner rather than later to limit the loss of life and destructions that can come. I worry about what happens when this war escalates further. When Russia got bogged down in Chechnia, they ended up engaging in a brutal war of attrition, ultimately resulting in 80% of Grozny's population being killed or displaced, imagine the same happening to Ukraine, with an urban population of 30 million. by gapyearwellspent (Thu 3rd Mar 2022 12:50pm)
  • >Let me make this clear - Ukraine was a peaceful country which at no point made any threats towards Russian territory. Last week, Russia unilaterally invaded them for absolutely no justifiable reason, and are currently raining missiles down on their cities. Ukrainian men, women and children are defending themselves with whatever weapons they have to hand. Not a single shot has been fired in the direction of Russian territory. It is possible to recognise Russia as the aggressor (or at-least escalator of the conflict depending on how you feel about Minsk agreement violations), and simultaneously want the war to stop and wish the loss of life and suffering on both sides to be minimised. >The Russian logistics are absolutely hopeless and they have failed in nearly all their initial objectives. The chances of them actually taking over Ukraine are slim. It's going to be something like the Vietnam war or Afghanstan - they'll hold some territory but ultimately will have to retreat with their tail between their legs. Albeit that might be some years from now. Maybe you're right, but we are one week into this war, and it took the coalition 5 weeks to take Baghdad, nothing is certain apart from the fact that people are dying and cities are being destroyed. by gapyearwellspent (Thu 3rd Mar 2022 1:10pm)
  • This! Did the gf want a sausageroll, or a roll and sausage? and was it a roll and a normal sausage or roll and square sausage? (it's always roll and square sausage but still confusing) And then just when you think you have it figured out, they ask you if you want link or lorne? like common I just started to figure this out! by gapyearwellspent (Thu 18th Aug 2022 1:43am)
  • This post was what I needed to finally email my councillors to complain. Fucking every Saturday morning this summer they walk past with their noise pollution. I should have the right to enjoy my garden/be hungover without them forcing themselves on me. I don’t have a dog in this fight, and while I don’t like the obvious undertones of Protestant supremacy it’s never affected me as a Norwegian Lutheran. But honestly I have had enough, these guys are just selfish and give the city, Glaswegians and Rangers a bad name. Like can’t they at-least walk in and ruin their own neighbourhoods, I live in Partick and we are like mainly internationals and (I think the few remaining locals, barring the ones in social housing are catholics here?) Why are they allowed to come and just bother us all the time? by gapyearwellspent (Sat 20th Aug 2022 12:52pm)
  • Ah fair enough, thanks for the info! Guess I haven’t researched it well, was just my impression from the based on the people in the close and from pints at the sparkle by gapyearwellspent (Sat 20th Aug 2022 1:42pm)
  • Don't know if it's pointless or not, but as politicians they need to be re-elected, if this issue gets raised enough by those they represent they might try to limit the amount of disruption to us out of self-interest. It for sure won't get better if the only ones who talk to them are those in the march and they think that's what their electors want. by gapyearwellspent (Sat 20th Aug 2022 2:49pm)
  • > as it's probably seen as a source of income inside GCC chambers You made the first claim and didn't provide evidence for it. It's for you to prove your assertion, not for us to disprove it. by gapyearwellspent (Sat 20th Aug 2022 4:04pm)

  • As an international I will tell you it does complicate things, but it’s obviously not impossible. In the UK it’s common to get a previous landlords reference, it’s very abnormal in other countries I have lived so your current landlord may not be familiar with what to write. Most don’t want students in the first place, even less a foreign student. Those landlords that will rent to students typically require a UK guarantor, which we obviously don’t have. Alternatively they ask for like a years rent up front and if you point out that the legal limit is 6 months, boom you don’t get the flat. by gapyearwellspent (Wed 9th Nov 2022 2:27pm)
  • Really? May I ask roughly what areas you feel are fine? I have a dual sim in my phone (so family back home can get ahold of me). My UK number is with an e sim from Vodafone and I often have only one or two bars around Partick, west end, university, and even some parts of the centre. Usually not a big issue since I can just switch over to the foreign sim and use whatever network is available, but I am definitely a bit unhappy with the vodaphone coverage by gapyearwellspent (Sat 12th Nov 2022 3:48pm)

  • To everyone saying this is stupid unless we have good public transport...you're misunderstanding the direction of the causal relationship. What determines if public transport is good? The supply of public transport which as it grows offers more frequent service, and would allow more routes to be operated. What determines how much supply we get? How much demand there is for said transport as it needs funding. So, making it slightly worse to drive, nudging people to use public transport, which increases demand, is what ultimately will result in improvements to public transport provision. by gapyearwellspent (Thu 17th Nov 2022 9:49pm)
  • It’s perfectly reasonable to consider them an uncommon thing about Glasgow most people won’t expect. Like imagine you’re from almost anywhere else than the UK/Ireland who doesn’t have an intimate knowledge of the city and someone told you that they have a tradition of dressing up as paramilitaries and marching around in the name of religious supremacy…most people would be surprised by gapyearwellspent (Tue 22nd Nov 2022 2:07pm)
  • For me it’s probably absolute roasters. I really like them, but 4.5 for a coffee is steep and would likely turn a fair few off, and I don’t quite understand how they aren’t going bankrupt paying rent on two locations, neither of which is open for the whole week by gapyearwellspent (Wed 21st Dec 2022 3:10pm)

  • Hey thanks for your reply! Yeah was looking at this one yesterday, and was planning to use it if nothing better could be found, but this one only does it at the top level (GXX), I would ideally want it for the full postcode so the visualisation is more interesting. In essence something like [this](https://imgur.com/a/XWjR5kS) which can be [zoomed into a high level](https://imgur.com/a/CYuybdL)...which I can create with the baselayer map from open data and adding "Postcodes With Information - Public View" made by Zoe_briggs as a layer...but I can't download the shapefile from them :( by gapyearwellspent (Sun 8th Jan 2023 4:53pm)
  • Hey thanks for your reply! I need the polygon sadly (I should have specified, I am just a bit new to working with shapefiles so I didn't think to mention it, and just sort of applying based on the [spmap](https://www.stata.com/support/faqs/graphics/spmap-and-maps/) command in stata)...in essence something like what I can grab [here](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/gisco/geodata/reference-data/administrative-units-statistical-units/nuts) for the EU where the id thats tracked is NUTS regions...but for glasgow and id being tracked is postcodes by gapyearwellspent (Sun 8th Jan 2023 5:45pm)

Can’t comment on whether it’s “not even the worst 10 in the country or not” I can only compare to the cities I have lived in, but it is significantly worse for cleanliness/vermin than: Oslo, Stockholm, Prague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
