  • Used Slater Hogg and Howison, they are actually great - good communication and fair points when deducting the deposit. Also used Zone letting, somehow managed to get the whole deposit back, they were OK some of the agents were a bit unpleasant to deal with during flat inspections. I don't recommend grant management, one of the points they deducted from our deposit was 40 quid for hoovering the ceiling. They were not great at communication with the landlord, almost felt like a scam. by pudgycathole (Mon 29th Jun 2020 11:36pm)
  • Finally got to introduce my close friends to each other through a video call (organised a quiz). • I would suggest seeing a private GP to get a referral (you can usually drop them an email and they will advise of that's a good idea to go through them) or trying a skin clinic in Glasgow, as they also work with dermatologists (https://www.sknclinics.co.uk/conditions/acne). I have used their services (not acne treatment) and was happy with them. There are also a couple of private doctors that come up on Google, worth calling and enquerying about consultation prices. by pudgycathole (Mon 16th Nov 2020 3:23pm)
  • Yes, I have taken lessons as learnt to cycle at 26, highly recommend it as it build your confidence on the road. It was a couple years ago with 'bike for good' but I am unsure if they are still in Glasgow. Definitely look around, I think cycle hubs should do training. by pudgycathole (Fri 27th Nov 2020 12:56pm)

  • There is an eastern European supermarket in High street and they have tinned fish like smoked sprats (I think it's Latvian version which might be different from the Swedish version). I would also check scandikitchen online shop, as they offer lots of treats like Kalles kaviar as well as abba goods. by pudgycathole (Mon 14th Dec 2020 1:38pm)
  • You have deleted the post but I can from people's comments what your original question was. Just writing to reassure you that it's possible to find a flat/house when you have pets, I have American friends who came here with a cat and a dog and a limited budget - they have worked it out. It may be a little tricky but you'll manage! There is no fixed rental period in Scotland, you can prioritize finding a place that accepts pets first, stay there for a couple of months and move if you need to. You will be fine, some people in the UK like to pretend things are more complicated than they are. by pudgycathole (Sat 27th Feb 2021 9:15am)
  • Yip! It's been a relatively recent change, a couple years ago you definitely had to rent for 6 -12 months, i.e. you were contractually bound to the flat. However, now it's not the case. I have been renting in Scotland for over 10 years and learnt about this when moving last year. I am not sure if it's just a Scottish thing, as it may be different in England/Wales/NI. https://www.gov.scot/policies/private-renting/private-tenancy-reform/ by pudgycathole (Sat 27th Feb 2021 4:21pm)
  • This is mostly a rant. I am staying in the city centre and this is honestly so sad, I feel so sorry for the people working in NHS, for the police, for people who will have to clean everything up next week. There were families who brought their little kids to this (?!!?). Young lads driving in, parking and heading to the square with bottles of booze, young teenagers being absolutely wasted and falling over. People are drink driving and speeding Iike crazy. Is it what people's values and priorities are? Just why? Drink some wine at home and celebrate. Some of us haven't seen our parents for over a year, friends get their cancer treatment delayed. The comments here make me a lot more hopeful that these people are the minority, at least on Reddit. by pudgycathole (Sun 7th Mar 2021 9:41pm)
  • I frequent oaka and unfortunately they haven't stocked kimchi in a while. I recommend Mr. Lims on Cambridge Street, that's where I got it last month. Personally, the options from roots and fruits are meh. by pudgycathole (Tue 23rd Mar 2021 8:29am)

  • I have gained 15 kg during the lockdown, so I am happy I can partly justify it by contributing to this thread. * Broken clock - just off Kelvinbridge, very beautiful and tasty cakes * Cotton take bakery - further up Great Western road, worth checking out, however, their bread is much better than their cakes, imho * China court bakery - short walk from the Cowcaddens, they do Chinese cakes, highly recommend, however, it's a bit different from the traditional European baking and cash only at the moment. * SLB - Victoria road, not strictly a place for complex delicates cakes but they do amazing sweet bakes by pudgycathole (Fri 23rd Apr 2021 5:16pm)
  • Sorry for the late reply, as the kind person mentioned earlier, pine apple buns and egg tarts are worth the try! For the tarts, they do egg tarts and Portuguese tarts, both are eggy but the Portuguese version is less so. I also enjoyed Napoleon Cake, there is a similar cake in Russian cuisine bit not quite the same as their version is a bit drier. Also loved red bean buns, custard buns, custard egg tarts. They also have full sized cakes and roulades that I haven't tried because I couldn't commit to. Be adventurous, it is really affordable! by pudgycathole (Sun 25th Apr 2021 9:53am)

  • I am from a Northern European country and lights in park is a normal thing there. In winter the sun sets at 4ish, so it's silly not to have lights in public spaces so that people couldn't utilise them. You can go walking your dog, jogging, cross country skiing. If you study/work 9-5, you then basically start and end your day in the dark, how else can you enjoy the park in winter? by pudgycathole (Thu 4th Nov 2021 5:13pm)

  • Congratulations with your job! I am sure you have worked very hard to get there. 60k is a good salary for Glasgow, it will give you better quality of life in comparison to London or even Edinburgh. It can increase quite quickly if you change jobs after every couple of years. In terms of the work/life balance, I think it will vary on your role. There is relatively big tech community with lots of meetups/events so you will be able to meet plenty of people in the industry. There also interesting events organised by unis, as well as plenty of museums and galleries. One thing is definitely don't sign any long term contracts for accommodation, as there is no minimum fixed period. It's easier to get scammed into signing a lease for a property you may not enjoy living in. Accommodation is competitive in glad and can still be quite expensive for a single person in a nicer area. Check if JPMorgan can provide some relocation cover. Unsure about the Indian community here, however, there is a Hindu Mandir and I think people did celebrate holi earlier this year. There are lots of South East Asian shops which stock excellent ingredients. by pudgycathole (Fri 20th May 2022 2:13pm)

  • We did the same and not regretting it, since the quality of life in the West end is pretty nice and higher prices do mean that it's less likely you get rough neighbours. We also missed on cheaper flats where people bid crazy amounts over the home report value. I am still not sure why people do that, I guess not everyone can qualify for higher mortgage, however, it must take years to save on lower salary. by pudgycathole (Tue 28th Jun 2022 10:44am)
  • Don't compare yourself to others like this, people are at different stages of their careers and at different ages from you and they also may have the luxury of having a partner or cash from parents. by pudgycathole (Tue 28th Jun 2022 4:29pm)
  • Just wanted to say that I will be surprised that any agent will be able to tell you the square area of the property. This is not listed in a filter criteria when you buy a property (they do include it in the home report) not to mention rental ones. Like most people I spoke to have no idea about the concept of property costing per sq metre. I am not from the UK, this really bothers me and I wanted to share this with another fellow European. This is my little rant. by pudgycathole (Wed 6th Jul 2022 12:09pm)
  • Haha, yeah, it seems so mad to me. I have observed this with friends in Ireland as well, in the US however, the square footage filter is definitely present on the appropriate web resources. by pudgycathole (Thu 7th Jul 2022 1:45pm)
  • I am a pedestrian and I agree about both the cars and the cyclist. During the busy hours (after 5 PM) Charing cross/sauchihall street crossing guarantees that there will be a couple of cars trying to run you over. by pudgycathole (Mon 1st Aug 2022 7:35pm)
  • Staying in the west end, so here is my rating from this summer: * Loop and scoop - recommend, best flavours. * Celinos - recommend, love to be able to sit in and eat from a nice dish. * Bungalow cafe (Mother India) - recommend, some interesting Indian inspired flavours. * Sips and Baker - recommend. * Minted on Byres road - not my favourite, possibly haven't tried the right flavours. * Ice cream van in Kelvin grove - don't recommend. I prefer richer gelatos so this has influenced the list. by pudgycathole (Sat 6th Aug 2022 11:03am)
  • What did you order? I had bad luck with both, one gave me vegan pizza instead of meat pizza (was takeout and hungry so ate anyway, pizza was so so). The other one sent me Hawaiian without pineapple. I hate wasting food, so also ate anyway but the first impression was ruined forever. by pudgycathole (Mon 29th Aug 2022 7:10pm)

  • That is nice, thank you. I am from a country where it's widely used, so it's good news. I don't think it's that trivial in some other countries it's a known thing to have glass recycling restricted to business hours, I didn't know it wasn't regulated in the UK. I have learnt that it's an unpopular opinion here. Some people are so angry and condescending. by pudgycathole (Tue 13th Sep 2022 3:40pm)

  • Just out of curiosity, why is ripping the box criminal damage? I don't justify it but I also wonder how it would appear out of the blue.I feel that any item added to the exterior wall should really go past all proprietors, it's a shared ownership. Also not sure if Iiving in a listed building would have any impact on this? Otherwise, people can install all sorts of things. by pudgycathole (Wed 12th Oct 2022 3:33pm)
  • Yes, evri has been terrible for me. They keep on taking pictures of the door into my building instead of buzzing in. DPD, UPS, postie - all know how to press buttons but Hermes just can't. Also, depending on the delivery, you can't divert all packages to a nearest collection point. All in all pain. by pudgycathole (Wed 14th Dec 2022 7:05pm)
  • It depends on what you are after. I like buying consumables as presents, as they are relatively inexpensive and don't contribute to people's household dust collection. You could get some short bread, tunnocks tea cakes/wafers, Scottish blend tea. You will find this in most supermarkets, including Aldi/Lidl, they will often include a Scottish flag next to products made in Scotland. To add, honey, jams, cheeses, tinned haggis, whiskey are always popular. For nicer things, you can always check out general souvenir shops for scarves/throws. Other than that, there are a couple of shops in Buchanan galleries that cell local artist's works. • Estonian here, yup - we need to wear reflectors in darker times, it's not the case of a high visibility vest but a cute reflecting item on a string. I have also seen school kids wearing high visibility collars/vests in Switzerland. Having said that, I don't think this will help here. Back home the pedestrian is king and has priority on unregulated crossings, cars always stop to give way (there are also generally more of them in Tallinn). In winter, there is snow and ice on roads so any extra precaution makes sense there. Similarly, pedestrians can't cross on red lights, I know people who got stopped by the police and got told off for doing this. Both people and drivers are quite cautious. In Glasgow it's the wild west, I am at the Charing cross, there is a green man, I am trying to cross and make eye contact with the drivers to make sure they don't run over me because they are anxious of getting into the right lane. It is the same case further down by St Vincent street, people just drive on read lights, they just don't look so the reflectors won't really help. I feel if Glasgow city council actually fined everyone at the Charing cross, they would be able to fill the budget hole. by pudgycathole (Thu 9th Feb 2023 9:19pm)
  • Waitrose, roots and fruits, locavore. I couldn't find a local butcher with organic chicken (there are some online but I haven't tried them). It's pain because you can really tell the difference in flavour and quality. by pudgycathole (Thu 9th Feb 2023 9:22pm)

  • I have had a consultation at both clinics but didn't go ahead with the procedure. Optimax said my prescription was too bad for LASIK whereas Optical express were super keen on doing surgery 'next week'. In neither places I actually spoke to surgeons directly; at the time, at optimax you would get a consultation after you prepay for the procedure and optical express only offered consultation at an additional price, meaning that you would go into surgery without ophthalmologist actually examining you (this was over 5 years ago, so may have changed). Optimax seemed a lot more professional and knowledgeable, whereas at optical express I was examined by multiple people some of which had no idea that I couldn't actually walk around without glasses and this was after they measured my prescription. That and the super pushy sales guy have really put me off optical express. In sum, I have stuck to daily contacts and will consider lens implants if I am ever unable to wear dailies. I guess to add to this, I am a foreigner that has been to ophthalmologists before (not in the UK) so I am inevitably comparing all of this to my experience at home. by pudgycathole (Sun 14th May 2023 9:53am)

  • Try polish supermarkets, although I must admit that the most versions I tried are not very good, they still have a fair amount of sugar in them. I second Marks deli, they have great soured cucumbers and the brand they sell is also available online. You could also try online kosher supermarkets? I think I tried these ones from Mark's deli https://www.b-kosher.co.uk/shop/food-cupboard/tins-cans-jars/pickles-olives/snowcrest-fresh-new-green-pickled-cucumbers/?gclid=CjwKCAjwpuajBhBpEiwA_ZtfhQynwHwrjk4H33obqcahAeULLVPXwZCcOxWcgjYqeFYFImMND5tghBoC_nwQAvD_BwE Waitrose also does kosher pickles but they were disgusting, sweet and mushy. by pudgycathole (Fri 2nd Jun 2023 3:39pm)
  • I am -11 and got glasses from Iolla for £85, not sure why you are unable to get glasses made. Perhaps there is another parameter apart from dioptres which is making it harder to produce? by pudgycathole (Mon 26th Jun 2023 8:29am)
  • I also wonder, what are the religious rules? Can I set up a Scientology parade with trumpets or is it just limited to Christian faith? by pudgycathole (Fri 30th Jun 2023 11:27pm)
  • We use Raz private hire for early morning flights/trains. It is more expensive but super reliable. by pudgycathole (Sun 29th Oct 2023 8:57pm)
  • I got more upset about the thought that it's unlikely they clean the wreaths properly after the use. What if someone has sneezed in it :( you can't clean them! by pudgycathole (Tue 14th Nov 2023 9:37pm)
