  • Commonplace among the scummy neds that dwell in Glasgow in certain places sadly. Live there long enough and you'll get a bit of a sixth sense for how to avoid it most of the time as daft as that sounds (you shouldn't have to adjust your behaviour for other people acting like dicks but pragmatically it's probably the easiest way). There are other ways to deal with it too but realistically not worth the hassle... by zappafan89 (Thu 30th Jul 2020 9:09am)
  • There is a problem too in that (in my experience) a lot of the few people who leave don't come back, when if they did it would contribute something new to developing the culture. I compare it to here in Sweden where it's pretty much standard now for a lot of young people to go and live a year or two in London, Barcelona, maybe the states. But more often than not people move back, and one of the consequences is that Swedish society has become a lot more internationally minded in the big cities at least, way more exciting new businesses etc than there were 15 years ago or so. Scotland would do well from encouraging people to try life elsewhere but also to come back and bring something new as a result. by zappafan89 (Fri 31st Jul 2020 9:56am)
  • I used Headhunter over in Kinning Park years ago. Facilities are good -- it has new owners as of a year or so ago I think so can't speak for the standard of staff but it was a nice place back in the day and reasonably priced. by zappafan89 (Fri 31st Jul 2020 11:25am)
  • Fair enough , wasn't really clear on what you meant - of course violence breeds violence. Sweden isn't perfect, I wasn't trying to portray it that way, I meant more specifically on this particular subject (the attitudes of an how well-formed young people are), and comparatively it's pretty fucking good. Drugs have long been a problem, it isn't anything new, and it all comes from draconian drug laws designed to create a "drug free society" (a pure fantasy) where for years they've resisted educating people about drugs and even resisted harm reduction measures like needle exchanges until very recently. But that's for Reddit/Sweden I suppose! by zappafan89 (Fri 31st Jul 2020 12:39pm)
  • Definitely. by zappafan89 (Fri 31st Jul 2020 12:41pm)
  • Give Gothenburg a bash at some point -- reminds me a lot of Glasgow (vs Edinburgh/Stockholm) in that the people are a bit easier to get to know. Amazing places to eat and a lot of great places for live music too (plus the best record shop in Sweden) by zappafan89 (Fri 31st Jul 2020 12:47pm)
  • Everywhere has their plus and their negative ultimately. Swedes can be quite closed off, at least in Stockholm, and that's another whole pain in the arse to deal with, so I guess it's just about what you are more happy to deal with! by zappafan89 (Fri 31st Jul 2020 3:32pm)

  • Once had a five pound three course Indian when I was a student. Thought it was too good to be true and it was -- was commiting sensory crimes for a solid 24 hours afterwards by zappafan89 (Mon 3rd Aug 2020 2:33pm)
  • Opened my guts there a few times as a teenager. Used to be a classic pre Barrowlands gig drinking venue for the underage by zappafan89 (Mon 3rd Aug 2020 2:35pm)
  • Did you hear the story about the dyslexic pimp? Bought a warehouse. by zappafan89 (Tue 4th Aug 2020 5:43am)
  • Some of the replies to this with people sympathising with the pimp really give you food for thought... by zappafan89 (Tue 4th Aug 2020 1:29pm)
  • The Note is a brilliant place and long has been. The most fun gig I ever played in my life was downstairs there when I was 15 so it will always have a special place in my heart. Chin up, I hope things work out for your soon, and that's very kind of you to try and pay the favour forwards. by zappafan89 (Fri 7th Aug 2020 2:01pm)
  • >SodonaBalalaica This!!! Literally the only gig in my life where I got paid AND fed (this was the height of pay to play in the early 2000s) was the Note (credit too to the promoter). Thought I was dreaming. by zappafan89 (Fri 7th Aug 2020 2:06pm)

  • Those the ones near Springburn? For some reason (actually no, for a very specific reason of weekly car journeys into town) what I always remember about them is the big banner with a smiley face on it that read "Glasgow's miles better" by zappafan89 (Tue 11th Aug 2020 9:23am)

  • On the other hand I've spent more time stopping my wee bastard from killing field mice and bringing them home (she goes outside and now rather than a mice problem in the flat I have a problem of her bringing mice in the flat) by zappafan89 (Wed 12th Aug 2020 11:05am)
  • Ours only goes out for a few hours each day (usually when the sun comes up she fancies a wander) so it's largely manageable, but this year I think some mice nested nearby, which wasn't their smartest move. She's shite at killing them too/not hungry enough to bother so often I manage to get them and the little things appear to survive once they got over the shock and scutter away, but a couple of times I haven't managed. She's generally a terrible bird hunter too though the fruit tree in front of the house just filled with cherries so the sparrows were asking for it, and she did get one of the poor buggars. Looking back on three paragraphs here I think I need a new hobby... by zappafan89 (Wed 12th Aug 2020 12:17pm)
  • I don't even think they need to actively kill them -- the scent of them keeps mice away apparently. by zappafan89 (Wed 12th Aug 2020 12:29pm)
  • To be fair he already looked a solid 50 plus in the old videos which is quite an achievement for someone on a health diet of rodents and cat food. by zappafan89 (Wed 12th Aug 2020 1:33pm)
  • The Warner Brothers store was amazing! Don't think I ever got anything out of there because it was too expensive, but it felt like a different world. Shout out to the Jolly Giant too. by zappafan89 (Thu 13th Aug 2020 11:12am)
  • >before walking along to Victor Morris to buy a samurai sword This part had me in stitches. Never could understand how they got away with selling such a wide array of killing devices. Did occasionally have the odd guitar in there mind you if I remember correctly. by zappafan89 (Thu 13th Aug 2020 11:11am)
  • I remember another wean in my primary school (must have been aged six or seven or so?) scribbling "IRA" with barbed wire wrapped round it in great detail on one of the pencil holder things. Always stuck in my head and still does as a solid example of how fucking deep rooted that shite is in Glasgow. by zappafan89 (Thu 13th Aug 2020 12:39pm)
  • Dunno if it's still the case but next to the (old) transport museum as well as next to the necropolis used to absolutely reek. Think there were breweries in both places? by zappafan89 (Thu 13th Aug 2020 12:38pm)
  • Sounds about right. There were always rumours about "special" stock hidden out of sight... by zappafan89 (Thu 13th Aug 2020 3:34pm)
  • The Queen Street barriers came really late, and even then there was a good while when you could just get off at High Street or Charing Cross and walk the difference to bunk the fare. by zappafan89 (Thu 13th Aug 2020 9:08pm)
  • To me the Showcase still feels new (I was born 89). There was still a cinema in central Coatbridge when I was really young I think, which became a snooker hall. Something I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned here yet (unless I missed it): when the ABC was a cinema. I saw the Jungle Book there when it was rereleased, think that's my earliest memory of going to a cinema. by zappafan89 (Fri 14th Aug 2020 9:29am)
  • I went to Quazer at some point in the 90s. Was quality (at least for a seven year old). I think there was one on Argyle street or am I making this up? by zappafan89 (Fri 14th Aug 2020 9:25am)
  • Another thing nobody has mentioned yet I think, from the 1990s: the big Clyde 1 events at George Square. They definitely had them around Christmas but I think possibly other times too. Felt like the entire city was there. by zappafan89 (Fri 14th Aug 2020 9:30am)
  • Aye that's exactly where I remember it being. Think when it became a pool hall it was called the crucible for a while maybe. It's pretty mental to think of the difference between even when I was at primary school to when I was a slightly older teenager: the mainstreet was full of different shops, local bakeries/cafes to get food or a tea or coffee, stuff like the cinema, swimming pool etc. By the time I left high school all that was there was pound shops, charity shops, bookies and junkies. by zappafan89 (Fri 14th Aug 2020 10:51am)

  • On the one hand, it only has one line, basically gets you nowhere other than the close west end and close southside, and is ancient as fuck. On the other hand it's ancient as fuck an basically gets you nowhere. by zappafan89 (Fri 11th Sep 2020 12:22pm)

  • Me and a mate had a show on Subcity for a couple of years. Our "material" was we'd just read the Metro we picked up on the way over and laugh at all the shite in it. Went out on their FM slot too.... Money well spent.... (To be clear, it was fucking awful) by zappafan89 (Sat 12th Sep 2020 3:30pm)
  • Sweden is the perfect control for this comparison: there they've had an ideologically based, science ignoring "zero tolerance" policy to drugs where the goal is to "eliminate" drug use for decades. Despite the evidence showing over and over again that this is a fantasy, they ignore it and continue to treat drug addicts like criminals. The result is one of the worst rates of heroin overdose per capita in Europe. I mention all of this because Sweden is in many ways comparable to Denmark in terms of education, infrastructure etc, so it's a pretty useful way of seeing where the opposite approach leads you. by zappafan89 (Wed 16th Sep 2020 12:37pm)
  • Wish there were more pictures and people talking about this. Maybe put it on a t-shirt or some kind of merch. Really deserves more attention. by zappafan89 (Wed 16th Sep 2020 12:35pm)

  • As a teenager I was convinced it was full of dobbers despite A: having never been in there for obvious reasons and B: never knowingly having spoken with someone who went there. So it was probably pretty good? by zappafan89 (Wed 16th Sep 2020 4:05pm)

  • There was a documentary made by... I want to say BBC Scotland, called "Glasgow's Goth Kids" years ago. Maybe 2001. A bunch of people I knew were in it, and it was the longest cringe you'd imagine. Would love to hunt it down but last I checked it's impossible, unless someone has access to the BBC archives... by zappafan89 (Wed 23rd Sep 2020 12:52pm)
  • Reckon that was Glasgow's Goth Kids. by zappafan89 (Wed 23rd Sep 2020 12:57pm)
  • Is the ginger guy Nicky something...? The "GAT" as it was was basically bams from the Gorbals plus a few select troublemakers who also happened to go to the Cathouse, if I remember correctly. by zappafan89 (Wed 23rd Sep 2020 12:56pm)
  • Checked a while back but seem to remember the only way of accessing it now would be through the BBC's archive. People who work there can access some of it digitally but short of that, nope. by zappafan89 (Wed 23rd Sep 2020 1:11pm)
  • No idea why I remember a few names of people, but literally only first names. It was funny how that whole scene went through waves of changes as each group got old enough to stop going to the unders! by zappafan89 (Wed 23rd Sep 2020 1:39pm)
  • Used to be tonnes, but the market for CDs is pretty miniscule now so you'll struggle. Vinyl you may have more success with. by zappafan89 (Thu 24th Sep 2020 11:30am)
  • Drinking in itself isn't really the issue as much as the culture in Scotland of drinking expressly to get shitfaced (there's a similar problem in a lot of northern European countries, it's there in Scandinavia at least). When I lived in Barcelona it struck me how slowly my Catalan friends would drink on a night out. They would take their time, have a soft drink inbetween, and for large parts of the night always be eating something at least until we went to a club. The nights out were much longer but the drinking was more spread out, mixed with food, and there wasn't this mad race to see who can spew their guts out first that I still see among a lot of perfectly reasonable people back home. by zappafan89 (Mon 28th Sep 2020 10:01am)

  • One route in is to start as a glass collector (I did that when I was a student, around 2010 and assuming not that much has changed). Usually there's a need in busier places for someone to do that utterly boring job and eventually they'll train you up to work on the bar because it's more practical to always have people who can jump on. by zappafan89 (Thu 14th Jan 2021 8:57pm)

  • It always amazes me how badly built housing in Scotland is for the weather conditions we have. Here in Sweden there are vents above every window in every house, also good vents in kitchen, bathroom etc. Despite heating being on half the year the windows never steam up and I've never ever had mould or humidity problems. Is it really THAT difficult? by zappafan89 (Tue 19th Jan 2021 8:45am)

  • There's just as much reverse snobbery to be honest which is as bad. My experience (disclaimer: from a working class background, bog standard school) is there was just as many decent normal people as stuck up arseholes. For young people in particular it is pretty much impossible unless you have money in your family. Upward mobility in the UK is a myth for the most part Therapy wise: it doesn't work for everyone but Better Help really made a difference for me. • I remember it and it is the star of a memory I've moaned about every year since. It's about 1999, I'm nine. Me and my pal are walking around the mainstreet. We find a £20 note. He quickly grabs it. I suggest we split it and live like kings for a month, because a tenner each went a long way at that age. No chance he replies. • If you were (un)lucky enough to be from Coatbridge and primary school age they started doing free swims all summer. Me and my pals easily spent a combined month or so there each year. The ice rink originally had a small raised section but they took that away pretty quickly if I remember. Mammoth lasted longer. Other stuff would go out of order quite regularly and stay broken for ages. Even at the tail end of my age to go there around 2003 or so the water and surfaces was already rank. • I did roll my eye about that. It's a shame because the rest of it is really good I think – a decent mixture of "must do" stuff and genuinely good tips for food etc that wasn't just a run down of stuff i've already heard of. It has been 12 years since I left Glasgow (and Scotland) now and as the years go on and I live in different places I appreciate more and more the diversity of things to do and eat that we have. Usually anywhere like that ends up overrun with tourists and loses its authenticity. by zappafan89 (Sat 21st Oct 2023 8:29am)
  • This is pretty much the same with Sweden, where I live. They do Edinburgh, if they're of a certain type they do golf stuff, and they maybe do distillery tourism, that's it. • Right, own up. Which one of you was it pretending to be an American in the comments section? "Manhattanite Manhattan Oct. 19 Who travels to Glasgow to eat Chinese / Italian food? We New Yorkers can go to Chinatown or Little Italy for that, thank you. Pretty lame suggestion. Rather, there are dozens of “chippies”, fish and chip shops which offer some of the best battered freshest fish in the world, taken from nearby pristine North Sea waters. Yet all the author mentions about these shops is the hackneyed “deep-fried Mars bars”, which few actually eat, compared to the incomparable “fish suppers”. Maybe chippies are too plebeian for her “refined” tastes And the obsession with rain is a gloomy cloud overhanging any good points this article might have. The misty rain is good for the skin, a natural moisturizer. Note what nice complexions the Glaswegians have. Finally, how could anyone write about Glasgow without mentioning some of the most intense football (soccer) fans in the world, the Glasgow Celtics and the Glasgow Rangers? A visit to their stadiums at Parkhead or Ibrox will be more than a memorable sporting event: it will be a revelation of unbridled passion, one of the most memorable events I have experienced in my travels to some 30 countries. • Those numbers are wild. I was there 2007-11 and during the busier periods it was impossible to get a spot at the Library etc at the best of times. Also during that time they had already figured out that taking in people from countries that paid the highest fees, no matter the cost, was the way to make money. There were at least two people in my class who legit couldn't speak English, got appropriately badly graded work, yet somehow made the cut.
