  • I would agree that where you live is not related to your aspiration - and stating it is, is a very problematic and classist thing to say on multiple levels. Aside from that, I will say that the rental market right now is dog eat dog (its ridiculous), and I need somewhere to live. I have more issue with the fact that the property is being let by a dodgy letting agent than the area itself. But needs must. by Lox_Ox (Tue 31st Aug 2021 4:20pm)

  • Thanks!! I'll keep an eye out : ) by Lox_Ox (Tue 31st Aug 2021 5:48pm)
  • Thanks!! Yeh, my general approach is to keep my whits about me anyway. Unfortunately they are charging a lot for the flat but honestly, so there are so many other places for the same price but are a dive - at least this place looks decent inside (though with a dodgy letting agent : /). Its savage atm! You have to take an overly aggressive approach to get anywhere at all. by Lox_Ox (Tue 31st Aug 2021 6:15pm)
  • You can say what you like about the place, that wasn't the thing that was the issue. I also wasn't saying anything about you (though you seem to think I was making some kind of personal comment), however I could likewise warn you about being presumptuous about my background (which I wasn't doing about you). However telling me to have aspiration by not living in a poorer/rougher area kind of insinuates that those living in such places (e.g. like where I am from) don't have aspiration, when half of what stops people is shitty policies to keep the 'lower' classes in their place/downtrodden. by Lox_Ox (Tue 31st Aug 2021 11:30pm)
  • Maybe you should actually spend some time finding out how ADHD affects people, especially women, rather than making assumptions based on outdated stereotypes. by Lox_Ox (Wed 1st Sep 2021 11:25am)
  • I don't live in Glasgow yet, but am trying to! I have been keeping a list of letting agents with good (a very short list) and bad reviews. I recently split my bad reviews list into two - with a hall of fame for the worst of the worst (I have added Castle to this list!). I didn't know if you might find it useful anyway (these are ones where the reviews have made me rather find any other solution than live in one of their properties): Fineholm, KPM Residential, Ross & Liddell, Allied Homes, Scottish Property Centre, Property4U, AQA Property Ltd, Newton Letting I hope you managed to get something sorted soon! by Lox_Ox (Thu 9th Sep 2021 9:58pm)
  • Its not just you! I have found it difficult to comprehend to people just how competitive the rental market in Glasgow is atm! I just managed to get a place after a few months of searching. I'll put any advice I can think of below. I initially took an 'on it' stance but quickly learnt I needed to take an 'aggressively proactive' stance!!! Its tiring and stressful though. * Always phone, don't bother emailing (unless it's on OpenRent through the online messaging thing) cus you will never get anywhere with it. Viewings for properties are being booked up within minutes of them being listed. If you see a listing go up on an evening, you need to make sure you phone as soon as the office opens the next morning. If you can't get through - keep trying. If they only provide an email address, find a phone number for them online. * Set up email alerts for various websites (Rightmove, Zoopla, S1 Homes, City Lets, OpenRent, Prime Location, any others you can find). Make sure your new emails appear as notifications on your phone. Make sure you stay with your phone so that as soon as you get a new email alert through, you look at the property and phone the letting agent immediately to book a viewing. You can even phone up to book the viewing before looking at the details of the property and then cancel the viewing later (though do this in plenty of time before the viewing so someone can fill your slot!). Some websites don't seem to have an alert function (e.g. LettingWeb) so I just bookmarked those and checked them when I could (though I aimed for more than once a day). * Always be overly friend, polite and professional to all the members of staff you speak to at the letting agent. Treat it like you are trying to impress them at a job interview, no matter who you speak to. Having them on your side may (/is likely) to help you. You never know which people play a part. If someone who is taking the calls likes you, they may include a positive comment about you in the notes which may help your case. * Know what you have to offer/how to present yourself in the best light (that you have a job will put you higher on the list than others! Make sure you mention will be (I presume) full time). Have some notes or a small spiel to hand. This is also useful when you need to fill in online notes of interest as you can copy and paste. If there is a section to include extra information about yourself, then do. Again, with the same approach as though you were applying for a job. Things that they like include a full time job, saying yes when they ask if you can provide a UK guarantor, and saying you plan to stay a long time in the property (always say 1-2+ years if they ask! Though legally you can leave your tenancy at any time with 28 days notice). If using OpenRent, make sure you add the personal friendly touch, as well alongside mentioning the money/professional based items. In general, always express your enthusiasm for a property - it is better to start by saying you are really interested in a property and you want to book a viewing, rather than just asking if it is still available. * Treat everything with absolute urgency. Have all your documents to hand\* (ready to submit if required) and complete/submit any paperwork they ask you to do ASAP because it may make the difference whether you are in for the running or not. \*documents you need to have to hand (I would recommend giving them clear document names - they'll be thankful for anything which makes their job easier): copy of photo ID, last 3 months bank statements, last 3 months payslips (if you have them), your passport number, proof of employment (e.g. confirmation letter/contract), details of employment referee (this should be someone in HR or similar - it is a financial referee (confirming your salary) rather than a character reference), details of your current landlord (who they will get a reference from), details of UK guarantor, bank statement showing rental payments for last few months (I had just one agency ask me for the latter) * If you have a choice of viewings, always pick the earliest/soonest one. Those who see the flat first also have the first opportunity to say they will take it. Different letting agents all operate slightly differently. Mostly they take a 'note of interest' from multiple people and then the landlord looks at the list and makes an arbitrary decision, but sometimes it is very much first-come-first-served and they accept an application from the first applicant, hence the need for speed! Hopefully that is of some help. Good luck!! by Lox_Ox (Mon 27th Sep 2021 11:49pm)
  • Yeh it's ridiculous! Took me 3 months (and the place I got isn't great). Had to take a very aggressive approach because just being 'on it' wasn't enough. Setting up email alerts on several websites was useful - then the email alerts came through as notifications on my phone. I had my phone propped up next to me while I worked so I checked the new notification immediately and phone up immediately. Places are being booked up in minutes. I spoke to a couple of lettings agents who have said how wild it is from their side too, the number of people who are phoning up. You have to know your selling points too to be persuasive. Tbh, I think I only got this place cus I viewed remotely - I think anyone who viewed in person would have taken one look at the close and not submitted a note of interest. by Lox_Ox (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 3:38pm)

  • An option I had forgotten existed - thanks! I will keep this as a backup as its a rented flat and it'd be my first time messing around with a boiler. But def doable if I needed to : ) by Lox_Ox (Fri 10th Dec 2021 7:34pm)

  • Planning to move from England to Scotland with an NHS diagnosis, the mental health team (when I phoned) said I would have to go back on the waiting list with all the undiagnosed people to be reassessed (so meds would be stopped), even though my diagnosis is NHS not private. Makes no sense. by Lox_Ox (Fri 27th May 2022 8:58pm)
  • Thanks. Fingers crossed! Though I am not hopeful because I have heard second hand accounts of it being true : / Such a waste of time and money on their part as well. I hope you manage to get your stuff sorted! Upsettingly ironic how much life admin is involved in accessing services for those with a disability that makes doing such tasks difficult. by Lox_Ox (Fri 27th May 2022 9:42pm)
  • (From a working class background) I would say that £30k/33k upwards is definitely middle class (obviously ignoring all the cultural stuff which is inherent). Totally shocked by all these people with mega high incomes feeling like they aren't on a decent salary (though the middle classes shocking me with their spending habits seems to be the story of my life!). by Lox_Ox (Fri 27th May 2022 10:14pm)

  • Leeds! They have a motorway too but it doesn't run through the middle of the city. And it feels like there are more options for walking on routes away from main roads (also, when looking to rent here, it seemed all the properties are on or next to main roads - most housing is away from main roads in Leeds, which probably also influences my feelings a lot!) by Lox_Ox (Thu 7th Jul 2022 2:58pm)

  • Ahh, useful thank you!! It is a true NHS diagnosis and have been on meds about a year now. I will try phoning them again : ) Thanks! Do you know, does the responsible psychiatrist just get switched over to the new service? (i.e. from the ADHD service where I am, to the MH team in Scotland?) so then it is the Scottish MH team has the shared care plan with my (to be) Scottish GP? (I assume this must be the case because the other option is that my current psychiatrist in England has the shared care plan with my (to be) Scottish GP?) by Lox_Ox (Fri 8th Jul 2022 5:44pm)
  • You can get a bus from the centre of Leeds directly to the airport? Unless you meant train. by Lox_Ox (Fri 28th Oct 2022 4:34pm)
  • You might be already, but only phone when you want to book a viewing - with how it currently is, emails are too slow. I had notifications from the major sites come through to my email, then I had my email notifications come through to my phone so I saw as soon as things got listed (although some of the sites do seem to have a delay on sending out the update emails). Then I would phone as soon as I saw it. But this is just to get viewings/be higher up on the viewing list (I read sometimes it is - first come, first served). Also, as soon as you have viewed a place, phone the agency immediately to say you would like to take it, then send them any information they require immediately. You might already be doing all of this but I just thought I would mention it in case it is of any help at all. I know how stressful it is - good luck!! (also - another good website is OpenRent which is all private landlords instead of agencies). by Lox_Ox (Thu 23rd Feb 2023 9:06pm)

I think other people have recommended it, but Spare Room is also a good place to look ([https://www.spareroom.co.uk/](https://www.spareroom.co.uk/)). • I always think that if I was a wheelchair user, I'd ensure the front of my wheelchair had something good and pointy on the front and then bash into the side of car owners who selfishly decide to block dropped curbs like this (obviously the wheelchair wouldn't hit said car if it wasn't where it shouldn't be). by Lox_Ox (Mon 27th Mar 2023 2:18am)
  • Don't forget that you can ask the bus driver for help as well if you get really stuck. I have done this a lot when I am unfamiliar with where I am going. The questions I usually ask are whether the bus goes to a certain place, or I have also asked them if they can tell me when I need to get off as well. I am sure I have asked other random questions as well, I think about bus stops/return buses/timings etc. They are usually happy to help! (not come across any not happy to help, the differences between them is just usually the length and cheeriness of the answers : p). ps. I don't only ask when I am really stuck btw. If I am feeling unsure, I will usually just double check they are heading the way I am expecting them to go. Its a very everyday/common thing for them to be asked questions like that so please don't be nervous about asking them. Its much better to get a quick confirmation from them rather than sitting worrying you're not on the right one (which I have also done multiple times). by Lox_Ox (Mon 10th Apr 2023 11:26pm)
  • If you do stay there though, get the train. They run every 30 mins and are cheaper, quicker, nicer and more reliable than the bus. It takes you straight into the middle of town. I can confirm the area is fine! But not much to do. Its mostly residential. by Lox_Ox (Thu 13th Apr 2023 3:18pm)

I assume for the other places it's related to social provision - there's a direct correlation between antisocial behaviour and putting/keeping people in poverty. by Lox_Ox (Sun 23rd Apr 2023 5:55pm)

  • Unfortunately First care as much as they care about the quality of anything else related to their company....I have just moved from another city and next to the taxis, the First bus drivers were the most dangerous and poor drivers (arguably more dangerous due to the size of the vehicle). by Lox_Ox (Tue 16th May 2023 12:31am)
  • I was thinking this too - its amazing compared to Leeds (95% of your options are First Bus), with Leeds being better still than Stoke on Trent (Leeds complain about the cost and service of First, but its even worse in Stoke on both fronts - which is also 95% First Bus with no other public transport options). by Lox_Ox (Fri 26th May 2023 3:58pm)
  • Leeds always seems to get brought up when people ask if there are any other places like Glasgow. I lived in Leeds for a long time until recently and am still struggling with the culture shock of how car-centric and polluted it is here. Leeds does have big A roads down towards the south, but it is in one very specific part and doesn't cut the city up half as much as Glasgow - you also only encounter it if you go down that way/unless you live there, then you don't really have a reason to be travelling that way. You also have lots of real residential areas in Leeds which are away from main roads - seems to be very difficult to rent anywhere away from a main road here (unless you can afford the luxury I'm sure). by Lox_Ox (Sat 27th May 2023 6:47pm)
  • Some of them are thankfully. They retrofitted a bunch of the engines (and obv some are electric - which I wish they all were) by Lox_Ox (Sat 3rd Jun 2023 4:28pm)
  • Haha true. Yeh, I don't know if they have plans to get more electric ones or not - I live next to a very busy main road and am definitely thankful everytime I don't get a mouthful of carcinogens when I walk past an electric bus stopped at the bus stop / generally thankful at there being less fumes accumulating in the air outside my window (which seep into my flat in winter even with all the windows closed - fun). by Lox_Ox (Sat 3rd Jun 2023 5:20pm)
  • £625 for a one bed on the border between Dennistoun and Haghill. I snapped it up under 2 years ago and count myself very lucky for the price, despite the condition being old (peeling wallpaper, dirt finds its way onto the countertop and into the cupboards cus the back of the decades-old kitchen isn't sealed off from the outside wall etc.) and it having some issues. Could be much worse though. by Lox_Ox (Sat 10th Jun 2023 2:00am)

  • Had one done a couple of months ago. It was about £125/130 for a molar. They said the managers had tried to put the prices up much more than this but the dentists had told them no/it was too much. They wouldn't do me a scale and polish on the NHS, presumably because I don't have giant layers of tartar (would reallllly love to get these coffee stains off though haha). They don't have an NHS hygienist but I could pay £80(!) to see their private one for half an hour. by Lox_Ox (Wed 26th Jul 2023 12:49am)
  • I've also had both. Had loads of silver ones then switched and decided to cough up and pay private (signed up to dental insurance). I haven't found any difference between the two. I think the silver ones are supposed to last longer? Not sure how true that is. People usually just pay more for cosmetic reasons. I personally pay for them because I became concerned about the mercury being in my mouth/my exposure level because I had so many dental issues. by Lox_Ox (Wed 26th Jul 2023 12:57am)
  • I quizzed my private hygienist (when I had one). She told me the best thing to focus on is the physical removal stuff (i.e. flossing and brushing), and pay less attention to mouthwash (I had specifically been querying about moutwash). Highly recommend an electric toothbrush if you don't already have one. I didn't get one for so long and really wish I had have done!!! Think it would have saved a bunch of money. Used to have all sorts of problems even though I was being very diligent about my teeth brushing - since getting an electric one I usually get the all clear at my checkups! Re: toothpaste. One of the important things is the fluoride content, but I have found aldis 60p cheap stuff has the same (highest) level of fluoride as the fancy ones haha. So its not all about the money on that front. by Lox_Ox (Wed 26th Jul 2023 1:02am)
  • Whut. They should be putting a crown on a root canal anyway, not a filling!! (the tooth goes brittle after the root is removed, hence crown not filling). Couldn't they just do an NHS root canal plus temporary filling (like they normally do when treating an infected root canal) then come the next day for the filling? (putting in then taking out an amalgam within 24 hours just creates/doubles the mercury exposure for everyone...) by Lox_Ox (Wed 26th Jul 2023 1:06am)
  • Yeh my partner pays for the fancy stuff and I just think its a bit of a waste of money/brand loyalty. You can check/compare the ppm of flouride yourself. It's always on the back. Okay, I just checked and my aldi one is 1450ppm. NHS says 1350 - 1500ppm is best. I think the 1500ppm is maximum in the UK before it gets into the medical/prescribed toothpaste zone. by Lox_Ox (Wed 26th Jul 2023 11:06am)
  • Love the glaswegian accent. Geordie, scouse and yorkshire are all great too. RP would be a massive turn off though. by Lox_Ox (Wed 2nd Aug 2023 5:23pm)
  • If you do this though and they hesitate with their answer in any way (or say no) then say 'okay' and genuinely be okay and leave. Don't try to persuade them, don't hang around, don't ask more than once. Edit - random men who approach you in public are usually dodgy, and its a dodgy (risky) way to meet someone. Which is why lots of women are saying its a bad idea/they would never date some random stranger who approached them in public out of the blue. by Lox_Ox (Sat 5th Aug 2023 12:02pm)

  • Yippon on George street is amazing - they make it fresh to order and is the only time I've had sushi anywhere close to the quality in Japan (disclaimer: I'm veggie so can't vouch for the fishy ones - but as I said, the quality is high for the others). Surprised to see people singing the praises of Sushi Ya. I ordered ramen from them in a supposed korean/kimchi broth and the entire meal, broth included, tasted very specifically of cheap chinese takeaway fried noodles (presumably the oil type/style of cooking). by Lox_Ox (Sun 3rd Sep 2023 1:33am)
  • Went for my birthday - the ramen was instant noodles in a salty unpleasant tasting broth (my partners was even worse). Left having not enjoyed any of the very low quality food, and with a headache from the increasingly loud house music they were playing (I like the music style, just not over lunch in the middle of the day when you're trying to chat over a meal?). Obviously didn't look at the reviews well enough - if I had have done, I would have avoided it! by Lox_Ox (Sun 3rd Sep 2023 1:39am)
  • As a cyclist, compared to Leeds its much better here. Drivers actually give you space most of the time (in Leeds, even if it was a wide road or they have a second lane to themselves (when I am at the side of the road, not in the middle) they still close pass you). by Lox_Ox (Sun 10th Sep 2023 1:07pm)
  • They're thinking of fungus knats instead of fruit flies - also annoying small house flies. What they said does apply to fungus knats. by Lox_Ox (Sun 17th Sep 2023 12:19am)
  • This does work, but only for the annoying little (smaller) black flies that aren't fruit flies. This will kill (some of the) fungus knats - they usually live in the soil of houseplants, but they do seem to like to have a party in the drain as well. Annoyingly fungus knats are much more difficult to get rid of than fruit flies. by Lox_Ox (Sun 17th Sep 2023 12:18am)
  • Yep - got to be cider vinegar!! They bred on the rim of my balsamic vinegar (bleh (I now keep it in the fridge in summer just to hide it from them)) so made a trap using this at first but they didn't go for it!! Swapped it for cider vinegar and in they go! by Lox_Ox (Sun 17th Sep 2023 12:23am)
  • Don't even need this much. I have found they like the ramekin best and I only put about a 0.5-1cm of vinegar in. Note - it does need to be cider vinegar to be effective/most effective. by Lox_Ox (Sun 17th Sep 2023 12:21am)
  • Don't know who is downvoting you for saying fruit flies in your house usually come in on your fruit lol. by Lox_Ox (Sun 17th Sep 2023 12:25am)
  • The fungus knats that breed in the drain are much much smaller than fruit flies (they're the really tiny black ones). I find that a kettle of water kills them just fine, in the same way as if you poured lots of boiling water over anything it would kill it. Though I ended up putting tape over the back (overspill?) hole because they seemed to be breeding there too. (I will back this person up though (for anyone reading) and repeat again - do NOT mix vinegar and bleach because it = lethal chlorine gas!). For the fruit flies (much bigger (relatively) and lighter in colour, and you can see their eyes if you look closely) - to clear them 1. the cider vinegar traps like everyone has said and 2. put all your food waste in a compost bag and tie it closed - only open it to put new things in - then make sure you take it out regularly. Had an accidental infestation recently and cleared it this way. If they are still lurking - keep an eye out for the areas they are in and you will probably find why they are still around/what they are breeding on. I even had some breed on a fruit teabag!! by Lox_Ox (Sun 17th Sep 2023 12:34am)
  • Yep, lived here about 2 years and was surprised to find out that everyone lauds the quality of the tap water because I found it to be like a swimming pool half the time (I'm in the east end). Does seem to be better than it was (was practically undrinkable at points before) but does seem to occasionally still be pretty bad. I would stay it still is worse quality than Leeds or Stoke though - the tap water was noticably nicer when I went to a friends wedding in Lancashire recently. by Lox_Ox (Mon 25th Sep 2023 2:44am)
  • To get the railcard - you just ask for a railcard form from a ticket kiosk at a train station - they'll give you a pamphlet that has an all in one form (for all the railcard types) at the back. Fill out the form - get your uni department to add their stamp and details then take it back to the kiosk (possibly they can only issue them at the bigger stations like Central and Queen St - not sure about the smaller ones) and take a photo then that's it! Pay your 30 quid and you'll get your railcard. You can get another one at the very end of your course too and you can then use it for the year after you're no longer a student. PS. when you go to buy it, they'll fill out an extra bit in the pamphlet and give it back to you - KEEP THIS. If you lose your railcard you can use it to get a free replacement. by Lox_Ox (Sat 30th Sep 2023 12:42am)
  • Yeh I was gonna say I have painted skirting boards before with no previous knowledge/instructions, and I did a significantly better job than this. by Lox_Ox (Thu 5th Oct 2023 10:42pm)
  • Yes! I saw it and it screamed landlord property style paint job to me. by Lox_Ox (Thu 5th Oct 2023 10:40pm)
  • I think the dry dense ones are just the american style ones - they don't use yeast for those ones (I don't like them either). by Lox_Ox (Mon 13th Nov 2023 10:59pm)
  • I think they have both types though. The american style ones which don't have yeast (the type that krispy kreme sell) - they are really dense and dry and then the UK style ones which do have yeast (haven't tried this type by tantrum, only ever tried a krispy kreme one when given to me for free and that was enough to put me off for life). One of the types (in Tantrum) they refer to as 'old fashioned' on the little sign for each doughnut but I can never remember if that means it is the american or UK style doughnut. by Lox_Ox (Mon 13th Nov 2023 10:58pm)
  • In the UK we use yeast. In america they don't, so the doughnuts don't rise (they are more like dense/dry/bready cake in the shape of a doughnut than what I would call a proper doughnut). Different recipes = different textures. by Lox_Ox (Tue 14th Nov 2023 11:13pm)
  • Not a dig at you, but if the krispy kreme ones have yeast in them, why are they so dense and dry haha (got given one for free once and it left a strong negative impression on me it seems). by Lox_Ox (Tue 14th Nov 2023 11:16pm)
  • Emissions tax is what they pay. Funnily enough, people pedaling bicycles don't need to pay emissions tax.... (council tax pays for the roads) by Lox_Ox (Thu 16th Nov 2023 12:32am)
  • As someone who spent years on dating apps (with no success), I totally agree. I could fancy someone on a screen, but then meet with them and know straight away I wasn't attracted to them/there wasn't chemistry. Dating apps are very tiring and time consuming. Having a run of people in real life in front of you is definitely more effective, or at least nicer/less draining. by Lox_Ox (Sat 18th Nov 2023 2:01am)
  • Yes, I've had to stop before when I have bulky and heavy luggage and can't move around the oncoming man, and they clearly refuse to move around me (despite there being plenty of space). They still walk into me. Moving 20-30cm to the side isn't exactly a difficult thing to do so its clearly some weird 'I'm a big man' dominance thing they have going on. by Lox_Ox (Sat 9th Dec 2023 3:27pm)
