  • For a flat? by MarjoryKeek (Tue 13th Oct 2020 6:19pm)
  • We just bought a flat in Mansewood, moved in about 7 weeks ago. The market was mental at the time we bid on this place but I think we got lucky and only ended up paying 7k over the home report value. We had so many knockbacks, what I would say is to just go straight in with your highest offer because if you start low in the hope that you'll get a bargain, you'll be outbid constantly. by MarjoryKeek (Tue 17th Aug 2021 10:23am)
  • Don't be totally put off! If you really want to own, buy something small and cheap and then you can buy something bigger in a few years? It's a shitty system but keep an eye out and you might get lucky! Also, Southside is growing in price constantly ATM, maybe consider a cheaper area?? by MarjoryKeek (Tue 17th Aug 2021 10:29am)
  • Sure, why not. by MarjoryKeek (Sun 12th Sep 2021 7:10pm)
  • I mean...not really helpful advice, was more looking for specific recommendations of somewhere good, where someone has been and could vouch for it, since it was a special occasion. But...thanks for your input πŸ‘€ by MarjoryKeek (Sun 12th Sep 2021 10:00pm)
  • Thanks, folks! Ultimately, his pal is under the weather and couldn't go! But...suggestions banked for when we reschedule ☺️ by MarjoryKeek (Sun 12th Sep 2021 10:08pm)
  • ...who said it was "some new phenomenon?". I'm really not sure what point you're trying to make in all of this πŸ˜‚ by MarjoryKeek (Sun 12th Sep 2021 10:15pm)
  • ....plans were for lunch, which I stated in the post title. If he had a food type in mind, I'd have specified! Was rolling the dice and hoping for a suggestion that might inspire! 🀷 by MarjoryKeek (Sun 12th Sep 2021 10:41pm)
  • I just don't see the point or need for those types of responses but you do you! by MarjoryKeek (Mon 13th Sep 2021 8:29am)
  • Yeah, I do know that. Was just looking for inspiration, hoping someone would mention somewhere we didn't know already! by MarjoryKeek (Mon 13th Sep 2021 8:43am)
  • Lol, no...they pay very well for retail! Or at least they did back then, maybe something has changed. This was over 10 years ago. I was on at least a tenner an hour then. I don't remember exactly what my take home pay was but it was hundreds more a month than earning 6 quid an hour in a care home! But that's not really the point of my post, ultimately! by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 12:07pm)
  • Well, I have no reason to lie about what I was earning... I was a customer service rep and also did some staff training. I was on at least a tenner an hour, I remember well because when I decided to leave to work in a care home (prior to commencing my nurse training), I was terrified about dropping 4 quid an hour! Like, why are we arguing about this? Even if it was 9 quid an hour, I was still earning 6 quid an hour working in a care home so ...still a difference of several quid an hour?! by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 12:15pm)
  • Same, I've never regretted it for a second! by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 12:22pm)
  • Perhaps they do, I think I started with them prior to the 2008 crash as a summer temp and ended up there for about 4/5 years. You got a bonus every summer and often Christmas back then, too! by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 12:21pm)
  • Okay, well you can think that I've "vastly overstated" what I was earning a decade ago if you want. I have no reason to do that, the point would still stand that people providing care for other human beings are earning a shitty wage? I know the threshold of what I earned, I'm not concerned with exaggerating for the sake of, what? Convincing folk about co-ops or something? I was just looking for some information. by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 12:28pm)
  • So, the point of a co-op isn't that everyone involved will make big bucks. It's about the democracy, having some ownership and control over your work and life, rather than working in a for-profit company that treats you like shit. I understand that it's low paid in councils, but look at all of the private care companies out there that the councils are actually sourcing their care from? by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 12:25pm)
  • Thank you for this, I've just registered for a couple of the consultation sessions! by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 12:32pm)
  • I understand that they're few and far between, that's why I'm keen to find some existing similar services or try to set one up in future! I can also support the new national social care scheme and hope that things change through that! by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 12:32pm)
  • Thank you for this. It's interesting and, being relatively new to the idea of co-ops, useful! I'm wondering if my customer HAS to be a local council. Does there need to be a middle man? People may hire carers directly. by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 12:57pm)
  • Yes, I've heard of this before and I love the idea. I think there are many benefits to be gained! by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 1:38pm)
  • Again, no reason to lie and I am certain that I remember correctly (mostly) what I was earning then because I was making a conscious decision to drop that much of my earnings to do something I really wanted to! by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 1:37pm)
  • I kind of think that, in present times, as an elder Millenial who lives in the Southside of Glasgow - there is a desire, at the very least, for this kind of change and for people to think about doing something outside of the capitalist system. We ain't gonna get rich from such ideas but who wants to be riding around on a giant cock-rocket anyway? :) by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 1:44pm)
  • I take all of that on board and appreciate your comments! I think what u/cococrab1000is saying is also valid, if there are no big bosses taking a huge profit (if the business is successful ofc), there's more to go around the workers. It's not a perfect system but worth considering in these times of truly dire late-capitalism. by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 1:42pm)
  • >level 6MarjoryKeekOp · 1hSame, I've never regretted it for a second! Yeah, when I was taking 2 trains and making a 90 minute journey each way to do a single shift in Port Glasgow, I did question my choices! :) by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 1:40pm)
  • So, this makes me think about nursing agencies. Many of them are small businesses. I know some people who have a long nursing career behind them who then start their own nursing agencies and, given the demand for nurses at the moment, seem to be making a real go of it. I don't know that they have a CEO who knows all of the "business", maybe it isn't totally necessary as it isn't a traditional approach to business anyway? It's about the ethos and what you can do for your community, in my eyes anway. by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 2:08pm)
  • I've been working in hospices for the last 6 years - for a giant, UK charity and now for a more local one. They do well out of donations and various funding opportunities, and I think that's because people recognise the NEED and value it greatly. Which makes me think that people would value a carer co-op also, good care, by an organisation that actually gives a shit. Seems like a no-brainer to at least give it a go! That's awesome, thanks so much, I will keep you in mind :) by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 2:24pm)
  • This isn't really a debate about whether capitalism is right or wrong, but it isn't working. That seems clear to me at this point in time. How do you fix the problems of capitalism? Who is going to do that? Who is going to take on the oligarchies and huge corporations? Not the government, not in Britain or America, or anywhere, it seems! I'm not suggesting a change in the system because it's 'what I feel like'. I'm saying this as someone who has been a nurse for many years now and who is now working in a system where there are people waiting for weeks and months for a social care package to be put in place. People are dying while waiting, with no-one to care for them. That may be due to Brexit, but I think that it's likely that a huge part of the problem is that people just aren't paid enough to do that kind of work, and they are not valued enough by the people who employ them. I've been there, earning 6 quid an hour with no nightshift enhancement, no sick pay, no overtime pay. Maybe they're all going to work in M&S, I dunno! I think that's pretty fair justification for hoping that there could be an alternative out there, and the comparison with Brexiteers is just silly! by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 2:21pm)
  • That may not be the point of business, but it's at least part of the point of co-ops? Of course, if the idea was to take off and grow, you would be tempted to charge more, rake in profits...but it's not really the point. It's about doing something worthwhile for the workers, for the community, filling an unmet need... As a nurse, I have felt undervalue and underpaid at many times in my career. But, ultimately, I love what I do, I feel it's rewarding, and I accept that I'm never going to get rich from this. If you can find some like-minded folks who want to do something for the greater good, that's half the battle. by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 2:27pm)
  • As previously stated, I was a customer service representative and also a staff trainer - so, yeah - I was on at least a tenner an hour. I was earning £6 as a carer back then, after I left M&S. I no longer work as a carer, although still in the caring profession. So, if you had read the post correctly, you would have the correct information, but you're still entitled to think I'm lying, although, as stated so many times already, I dunno why I would! And, finally, if you go and ask someone working in a care home as a care assistant, they will be on minimum wage. For someone aged 20, which I was at the time I was working in a care home, they'll be on £6.15 an hour. Which isn't much more than the £5.93 I earned as a carer back then! Check the rates for national minimum wage and then come back with a slightly less aggressive tone, jesus. by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 2:52pm)
  • I agree with most of what you've said. However, having been living under a Tory government that I did not vote for for many years now, I do feel helpless! I'm sure many people do. Being politically active and educating others and submitting to democracy is a good idea in theory, but again, doesn't do much good when things are at a crisis point and something radical might be needed? I would certainly say that setting up a small co-op, in a single area of a city, to provide a particular service and meet a particular need, is an incremental change that could incrementally improve society :) by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 2:54pm)
  • ...Why would you make that assumption? I got my first job when I was 14, go figure. by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 3:04pm)
  • You're splitting hairs, mate. by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 3:03pm)
  • That's part of the point, yes. I don't think saying that carers deserve to be paid more and that no-one is going to get rich from working for a co-op are contradictory. You can be paid a fair wage, better than minimum wage (which, whether you're aware of it or not, is what most carers are paid, particularly if they work for a private care provider) but know that you're never going to be a millionaire... by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 3:01pm)
  • Dude.. At no point did I say M&S was my first job. At no point did I say I was earning a tenner an hour at age 14. In my initial post, I said this was many years ago, then said it was at least more than ten years ago (both true, not contradictory...). I also said "I think" I started working for M&S prior to the 2008 crash. Which is also true, as far as I remember, but could also mean that I started working for them in 2008! You're very much missing the point in all of this, arguing and splitting hairs for the sake of accusing someone on the internet of being full of shit when they're just trying to have a discussion about the idea of a co-op. Like...what's the point of what you're doing right now? by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 3:43pm)
  • Cool! I had done some additional training in customer service and also trained new staff members, I got an extra quid or two for those things. Makes sense and good to know they still pay reasonably well! by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 3:45pm)
  • ...how many times do I have to say it? I was a customer service rep and a staff trainer. Both involved doing a bit extra as well as "working in the shop". The fact remains that I worked for M&S and earned significantly more than I did working more hours as a carer πŸ˜‚ by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 6:32pm)
  • At this point, I'm slightly concerned that there's something wrong with you. Either there is or you're wilfully misunderstanding for the sake of trolling, which I'm less concerned about. The only reason I mentioned the 2008 crash is because someone said they pay less now (which, they don't - someone has said that they still pay upwards of 9 quid an hour, generally). I said I thought I had started with them prior to the crash, maybe that explains why someone working now would be earning less. I think it's pretty relevant in the context of someone suggesting that a company pays less now than they did MORE THAN ten years ago, because after 2008, everything got worse! Bloody hell, this has been tiring. by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 6:58pm)
  • I said "more than" ten years ago. JFC. We're done here, man. by MarjoryKeek (Wed 22nd Sep 2021 7:14pm)
  • Some other folks have suggested this, and I agree to an extent. I am already politically active, however I've seen the changes that have occurred in the social care system over the last 15 years or so since I first started in the industry. You can vote and be politically active all you like, it takes a very long time for any real changes to happen in that sense. I don't see why someone couldn't also be pro-active in bringing some small changes about by themselves, for example, by setting up a co-op! by MarjoryKeek (Thu 23rd Sep 2021 11:29am)
  • Does a small co-op that's providing care have to have a CEO? Again, I return to the idea of nursing agencies. They're mostly run by people with a long background in nursing, who see a gap in the market/unmet need, and go about filling it. It doesn't seem crazy to do it with a co-op ethos. It seems like a no brainer, tbh. by MarjoryKeek (Thu 23rd Sep 2021 11:27am)
  • I don't know that that's necessarily true. I don't think a co-op that was about providing social care would have to be charging rock-bottom prices in order to get any business. I think we are moving more and more towards a more conscious society in which people are willing to pay a fair rate for a good service provided, and to support local, independent businesses. There doesn't have to be a middle man with whom you're trying to get business from, you could get it directly from the person who requires the care. Yeah, the point is that there are no big bosses taking huge wages, and no shareholders bleeding the company dry. Everyone is paid a fair wage for the job they do, filling an unmet need, and hopefully providing a good, valuable service. It's a bit of a dream but I don't see that it's crazy and couldn't work. by MarjoryKeek (Thu 23rd Sep 2021 11:25am)

  • I hate both but I'm quite certain Celtic fans have caused their fair share of hassle and hatred in this city, same as Rangers fans. Wise up. by MarjoryKeek (Mon 27th Feb 2023 12:11am)
  • Why the fuck is this so normalised in this city? I HATE football because of this city. I'm not pro-lockdown by any standards, the opposite really, but even during the lockdowns, football fans got to just go out into the street in their masses and be fucking hooligans and it was fine? While the rest of us were stuck indoors and having to social distance and all that pish? It's quite disgusting that it takes precedence over everything. by MarjoryKeek (Mon 27th Feb 2023 12:10am)
  • A quick Google will suggest otherwise. I don't get this "my side is the 'good' side" pish. You're all part of the same thing. You all appear to take great delight in winding each other up. Celtic fans give it "that's shameful" when a rangers fan causes hassle, and vice versa. But you're all just as bad as each other, from the pov of a non-football fan. I'm certain there are some folks in amongst you who just genuinely love the game and don't want anything to do with the rivalry but the undercurrent of bigotry runs deep in this city and football is the main driver of that. by MarjoryKeek (Mon 27th Feb 2023 12:21am)
  • Crookie by MarjoryKeek (Mon 27th Feb 2023 12:42am)
  • The worst thing about all of this is the entitlement. Avoid walking past a pub on a football day in case you encounter trouble cos then it's your fault for walking around in broad daylight. Not the fucking hooligans who are out fighting over a football match. by MarjoryKeek (Mon 27th Feb 2023 12:12pm)
  • It doesn't sound like you're coming from an unbiased place so I have to take your opinion with a pinch of salt. I've seen news reports about both sides behaving in antisocial, violent ways. by MarjoryKeek (Mon 27th Feb 2023 12:10pm)
  • Dude, there's footage on various platforms from yesterday showing fighting between Rangers AND Celtic fans. Rival fans fighting each other. How can you deny that both sides are part of a deeply rooted problem? I'm not calling YOU personally a thug. I'm not calling ALL football fans thugs. It shouldn't be normal to say to yourself "there's football on today, somewhere in the city, I'll stay home just in case there's trouble" because you know there's always trouble of some kind. That isn't normal, we shouldn't normalise it and we shouldn't just ignore it, either. by MarjoryKeek (Mon 27th Feb 2023 1:59pm)
  • I hate the behaviour football (and alcohol), particularly in this city, brings out in people. But, you seem to know me better than I do, so sure. by MarjoryKeek (Mon 27th Feb 2023 1:55pm)

  • We moved into our flat 2 years ago. When we arrived, the grey food waste bin was chock full of a mixture of some food waste but also empty bottles, nappies, general household waste and so on. The council wouldn't empty it because it wasn't food waste. It's become full of liquid as the organic waste breaks down..someone put a brick on the lid to keep it closed. Still there, I've phone the council many times and they won't do a thing about it. Well, last week, a neighbourhood kid knocked it over..so now our back pathway has all of this literal shit lying over it, absolutely honking, and still....council won't do anything. by MarjoryKeek (Wed 12th Apr 2023 10:25pm)

  • If you want to do full body, push/pull/legs is a good place to start. Do a horizontal push eg chest press and a pull eg horizontal rows. Then do a vertical push eg shoulder press and vertical pull eg lateral pull down. Finally, do legs - a big compound movement like leg press or hip thrust and, if you can be bothered, leg curl and leg extension. Try to do at least 3 sets of each, aim for 5 sets if you have time/energy. You should be aiming to lift a weight that you can do between 6-12 reps of and the last few reps should be HARD. If you're comfortably doing 15 reps, you're not lifting enough. Make sure to rest for at least 3 minutes between sets, ideally 5 mins if you're not too pushed for time. If you want to split your workouts, you can do push/pull/legs over 3 days. I find this means I can get more done for each but if I do all in one day, it's a good cardio workout too. Do a warm up set for each if you're inclined to, it can help avoid injury. Most important thing is consistency. I'm not a fella but this will work. by MarjoryKeek (Fri 16th Jun 2023 8:25am)
  • No worries. If you're a bit pushed for time, you can superset these. So, for example, do your set of horizontal push then immediately do your horizontal pull and then take a good 5 minute rest. It saves a wee bit of time if you're impatient like me. by MarjoryKeek (Fri 16th Jun 2023 9:37am)
