  • Ah, standard bootcamp devs. Wasn't sure if there were any deeper issues - I remember hearing a lot of JP Morgan devs were involved with it, not been terribly impressed by them over the past few years. by SaltAccident5 (Wed 30th Sep 2020 7:08am)
  • Sounds totally consistent with what I've heard tbh, they don't have a great reputation in the circles I'm involved with. A few volunteers I know are patient and know their stuff, but I know of others who were just there to get 'volunteering' on their CV. > if you're not a coding whiz like several wunderkinds in my cohort were, you'll be left behind I had a few tutors like this at uni - so frustrating! What's the point in catering to the people who will definitely be fine regardless? Sorry you had that experience. Hopefully it didn't put you off coding projects entirely. by SaltAccident5 (Wed 30th Sep 2020 2:13pm)

  • Private landlords can sometimes be convinced, but a lot of them are cagey about students with no guarantors. Estate agents just point blank refuse applications from students without a guarantor. • I had no side effects apart from sleeping 13 hours the night after mine. Felt completely fine apart from not being able to lift my arm too far, but that went away within 48 hours or so. Try moving your arm around for a few minutes after jag 2 and see if it helps. I heard from a few people it reduces stiffness, seemed to work for me. by SaltAccident5 (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 12:27am)

  • Entirely fair - I'm not on the spectrum but I found customer service roles \*so\* fucking exhausting, it's draining having to keep up a front for hours on end. Software dev and tech research projects are a very different beast, it's a much more 'focused' type of discussion with a team you get to know over several months/years. As long as you're not actively being one of those arrogant 10x types who alienates everyone while trying to prove themselves 'right'\*, you'll probably be fine. Not sure if cleaning jobs are back yet, but I'd highly recommend those for a bit of cash while you're a student. They're usually an early start, but I found them so much less stressful than customer service jobs during uni - headphones and podcasts on for a few hours in the morning, then a coffee and a quick subway ride to uni. (\* worst part is they're often not even as good as they think they are.) by SaltAccident5 (Fri 23rd Jul 2021 11:05pm)

  • DELETED Didn't submit my data because I'm from Bo'ness, not Glasgow, but I loved listening to the different accents here. The east coast central belt accent sounded total middle class, doesn't sound anything like the folk I grew up with, but the non-Glasgow west coast one sounded almost exactly like my gran reading something - really surprised me haha by SaltAccident5 (Sat 24th Jul 2021 10:41pm)

  • There's a lot to be said for the social side of in-person lectures. Sometimes me and my pals would chat about what we'd just learnt on the walk to the next lecture/lunch/etc but most of the time we'd be talking about plans for later or generally chatting shite. Just having fun going through a shared day together. These shared experiences are key for feeling connected to other folk and making friends. It's possible to learn all the content 100% remotely but you miss out on so many social opportunities and daft memories that way imo. by SaltAccident5 (Thu 12th Aug 2021 9:48am)
  • > 'We need to keep lectures in person so folk can hang about with their mates' is a poor argument during a pandemic. For what it's worth, I was never arguing that. Online lectures make total sense for now (I'm a PhD student, I don't want to teach in-person labs yet either), I was just giving my view on the value I got from in-person lectures and what aspects were "impossible to deliver online". The rest we'll agree to disagree on - I saw the shared collective experience and interaction with lots of different people most days as a key benefit of in-person lectures, other people can get by fine without that and are happy with streamed/recorded lectures alone or in small groups. Both opinions are totally fine. by SaltAccident5 (Thu 12th Aug 2021 10:20am)
  • > I've yet to be told why a lecture absolutely needs to be in person other than folk enjoy the social side of pre and post lectures. I'm not sure anyone is arguing that they absolutely need to be in person. Even the thread OP seems more annoyed about the lack of community and resources than remote lectures specifically. A few people are giving advantages to in-person lectures (social stuff, easier to focus for some people, etc), but these benefits can wait until things are a bit more stable - there were plans for optional in-person lectures where I am, but those were shelved for at least the next semester. The option of remote or in-person is nice to have, but nobody's arguing we should be risking people's health for it. by SaltAccident5 (Thu 12th Aug 2021 11:47am)
  • You'd be surprised, I'm a TA in one of the science departments and we have a similar lack of information. Some lecturers give plenty of info about the lab work and online setups in advance, others just throw us into a zoom room with no clue what the students are working on or whether we're supposed to go between breakout rooms etc. Sorry to hear you're in the same boat. Looks like TAs everywhere get a bum deal, we don't get paid enough for this shit. by SaltAccident5 (Thu 12th Aug 2021 11:59am)

  • I'm really sorry to have to say this but it might be worth moving flat after reporting the guy to have more peace of mind. I had a situation with a male boss at a summer cleaning job following people back to their flats and showing up on days off - I'm a young female student as well, so I didn't want to take my chances with a direct confrontation. The good news is that a big company like royal mail will be very likely to take action against a dodgy employee. The bad news is that he won't suddenly forget where you live - hopefully he's only doing this as an opportunistic thing and won't bother if he's on another route, but the safest option is to move if possible imo. It shouldn't have to be our responsibility to move home when we've done nothing wrong, but it's better being cautious when someone's being an absolute creep. Sorry to hear you're having to deal with this, hope there are less stressful times ahead soon. by SaltAccident5 (Mon 18th Oct 2021 12:25pm)
  • Try gumtree. I had a lot more luck renting from private landlords than estate agents, much less fucking about with guarantors etc. My old landlord sold just before the march 2020 lockdown, so I had to find a place in similar circumstances. The place I got through gumtree isn't ideal (no central heating, no living room), but it'll do until the rental market hopefully gets a bit less mad. by SaltAccident5 (Sat 23rd Oct 2021 10:17am)
  • What's the script with the Scandinavians? by SaltAccident5 (Tue 9th Nov 2021 2:05pm)
  • 100% this - estate agents and most private landlords don't understand the differences between PhD students and undergrads, they just see the word 'student' and assume we're unreliable, damage risks, etc. They don't know we're generally late 20s and get paid all through the year, and they won't bother looking into details given there's no shortage of folk looking for places at the minute. Your advisor(s) will probably already know about this. Saying you're employed as a researcher is a very common white lie they're willing to back up in references. by SaltAccident5 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 11:55pm)
  • > my understanding being undertaking a PHD costs about £15-35 grand a year Potentially for self-funded PhD students, but self-funded folk are generally people with more money than sense tbh. For sciences the vast majority of us get somewhere between £15k and 20k as a tax-free stipend each year. Tuition fees are waived and we're exempt from council tax. Check if any PhD student applicants are self-funded. If they have a stipend award letter they're likely a safe bet as a tenant. If they're paying to do a PhD they're unreliable for a number of reasons. by SaltAccident5 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 11:55pm)

  • > This is just two girls having a laugh. It comes across as a lot more bitter than that, weirdly rude for the sake of being rude from the person at the till and tragic desperation/validation seeking from Cosima. I wouldn't have known the characters were supposed to be having a laugh without you telling us. Like this whole thing about a woman being ugly if she isn't showing her face just isn't a natural shift in conversation between two women, particularly from someone who works in a record shop and is probably a bit alternative. The getting away from Glasgow thing I could probably see (although it would still come across as bitter, not comedic), but definitely not the no face on the cover thing - not because it's misogynistic, mostly because it doesn't sound believable given the two characters. by SaltAccident5 (Sun 12th Dec 2021 11:45am)

  • Boomer patter by SaltAccident5 (Sun 6th Feb 2022 7:03am)
  • Stuff you'll need for references varies heavily between estate agents and private landlords. For the private let I have now I just needed to give proof of income and previous rent payment history (ie. redacted bank statement), for the estate agent I rented through a rectal exam would've been less invasive. Tenants only need to give 28 days notice to end their tenancy here, fixed term lets aren't a thing anymore. by SaltAccident5 (Fri 11th Feb 2022 7:39am)
  • > 95% of the time it means no undergrad students It's got a lot more difficult to rent as a postgrad student these days, a lot of estate agents don't seem to understand the difference and usually flat out refuse us as well. I've had more luck with private rents, they seem ok with it once we explain the stipend situation etc. Estate agents usually require a UK-based guarantor for any student on the lease, regardless of past renting history etc. Again, not usually as big an issue with private landlords, especially if it's a couple where one partner is an employee somewhere. by SaltAccident5 (Tue 15th Feb 2022 1:19pm)
  • The wheels fall off that one as soon as they start asking for payslips and employer references unfortunately by SaltAccident5 (Tue 15th Feb 2022 1:30pm)
  • No problemo, I didn't really know the differences either before I got involved in research. The main difference is we get paid a stipend every month for three and a half years, no summer break in funding like undergrads. The stipend payment for a lot of PhD students in the sciences is about £1300/mo, which is between 2x to 3x the monthly amounts undergrads get. We also don't move away for work or back home over summer. The other major difference is that we're much less likely to throw huge flat parties like the old days. It's a depressing combination of the workload in postgrad programmes being intense, a lot of asocial/older folk as colleagues, and old pals from undergrad moving away for work/cheap mortgages out in the sticks, etc. tl;dr: postgrad students have a higher, more reliable monthly income and far, far lower risk of loud parties and property damage than undergrads by SaltAccident5 (Tue 15th Feb 2022 3:18pm)
  • > Part of my safety net was e.g. I would say "PhD researcher" instead of "PhD student", say "I receive a stipend which is a taxable salary equivalent of ~£18k", and that I was council tax exempt. It's enough that most people get what you mean without getting penalised for it. A lot of estate agents and landlords have got wise to that one, I tried that with no success. As soon as we say we can't provide payslips and we're exempt from council tax estate agents and some private landlords reject us with no room for explanation or negotiation, even though my advisors were willing to write a reference backing up the white lie that I'm a researcher at the uni. I'm not sure what things were like for postgrads before the pandemic, but the surge in demand and decrease in supply means landlords and estate agents can be very selective these days. > There are guarantor services available now for about £200-300 I think or some universities also offer guarantor services for their students. Yeah, I'm lucky that I didn't have to go through these since I'm a UK national with family nearby. A lot of people in our department have to rely on these services, it's a hidden cost they didn't expect when they signed up to study here. >In general, an estate agent not accepting these is usually an indicator that the estate agent is a bit dodgy. Standard practice these days imo. The only landlord I've had who chose me as a tenant through an estate agent while I've been a PhD student had a doctorate of some sort himself. Every other time has been a flat out refusal because of student status, they know there's a large number of other potential tenants they can get into any reasonable quality property. by SaltAccident5 (Tue 15th Feb 2022 4:55pm)
  • Ah, that might be it. We don't get payslips at university of glasgow for stipend payments, just a direct bank transfer. We only get them for optional part time lab assistant work etc, but that's like ~£200/mo for most folk. I've moved twice over the pandemic and had a lot of problems with not being able to bypass the 'student' filter even with the usual white lies about being a researcher etc. Got some reasonable offers through private lets, estate agents just weren't having any of it most of the time. Seemed daft given 7 years of renting history without a single late or missed payment. by SaltAccident5 (Tue 15th Feb 2022 5:39pm)

  • I had a bad experience with a counsellor/psychologist (?) at Riverside about 6 years ago. I was crying and just having the roughest time of my life tbh (anxiety, depression, hallucinations), and she just said I had an attitude problem and she knew I wasn't going to kill myself. I mean, I didn't, obviously, but I was damn close to acting on a plan for a few days after that first appointment. I asked to have future appointments with someone else and I got a letter a week or so later saying I had a block of appointments with her as the clinical staff anyway. I wasn't listened to at all. The next NHS psychiatrist I saw actually listened, thankfully. I'm doing so much better now I have the right medication and talking therapies every so often. Pretty much feeling normal these days. I don't remember much about that week but the staff member I saw had a first name starting with M. Can't say more than that publicly, but hopefully she moved elsewhere in the previous 6 years. It's luck of the draw who you see as a patient unfortunately - my best and worst experiences with mental health have both been in NHS facilities. Good on you for keeping an eye out for your pal, it means a lot having someone on your side after a bad appointment. Best of luck, I hope they get seen by one of the good folk. by SaltAccident5 (Mon 21st Mar 2022 10:55pm)

  • Yeah, been living in one of the cheaper old builds in that area for about 4 years now. Normally the jakeys hanging around the tenements in that bit are loud and can be a bit aggressive asking for stuff but it generally doesn't escalate beyond that. Unusual seeing the area blocked off by polis the other day. Mildly sketchy is about right imo.
